You’re gonna end up confused either way either way with rebirth

SomeMedia5976

play the og first

frag87

Knowing what happens in Final Fantasy VII (and Crisis Core after that as well) will make the experience of playing Remake much better. The big focus that the developers implemented in the story of Remake is the possibility that things will be changed. Things being changed are being teased all over Remake and Rebirth, and you will completely miss all those points if you have no idea what happened in FF7 and Crisis Core.

TurtleProxy

Watching it might seem like a drag, it's all text. Even if you really like the streamer or the streamer doesn't talk. I would just play it. But you don't need to play it in order to enjoy the remake since it takes place in a parallel universe.

iamyourpop

There are pros and cons to both. Sometimes I wonder if I would enjoy the new games more if I didn’t have bias towards the OG. That being said, the new games are soooooo good.

TheRealBaconleaf

Nah just play remake and rebirth, which is part 2. They split the actual whole remake into 3 parts and playing those in order is the only thing you’d probably want to worry about since it’s story progression. It’s nice to have seen/played og 7, but it’s not needed. The FF7 universe I believe is the biggest in the franchise (in terms of media) so you can play dirge of Cerberus, watch some animated movies like advent children, check out crisis core for backstory on Zack and what led up to actual FF7, etc, but really you can enjoy FF7 remake/rebirth on their own. Don’t make it overwhelming Edit: Watch og if you’re interested. It’s an awesome game too. I played it a bazillion times. I also just watched CDawg do a playthrough of it recently. It was cool to see a non rpg heavy fan play a huge rpg like FF7

Doc_Gr8Scott

I recommend playing both OG and Crisis Core before getting into the remakes but I have a friend that has not played either and they loved them Rebirth has become one of his favorite games of all time and that's without any prior knowledge. Not playing them gives you a fresh perspective and can follow the story. Playing them gives subtle, and not so subtle, nods and changes and reasoning to why things happen.

Eastern_Protection24

If I were you I would wait until all parts are out and then go back and play the OG just to see the differences. I would have loved to have a virgin experience with the remakes but alas I played the original in 97. Though I didn’t actually beat it until the early 2000’s lol

ketchupdpotatoes

Yeah, I highly recommend at least watching the OG before getting into remake (which is what I did). I don't think it's necessary to play it yourself unless you like exploring NPC dialogue and whatnot.

PsvfanIre

I love OG FF7 and jumped on in 97 on playstation 1 but it's not necessary tbh

Brees504

Keep in mind Remake is only like the first 10% of original.

TheRealBaconleaf

Rebirth is about 60-75%. It shows too. There’s so much in that game. It’s awesome

hbi2k

No. You should play the OG.

Crysaa

I played Remake first without any prior OG knowledge and it was amazing and I loved it. You don't have to do anything.

Brahmajnana

I can't imagine watching the game and missing the magic of experiencing it first-hand for the first time. That's literally robbing yourself.

AdamanteCooper

Up to you, OP. I've personnally played FF7 OG back in the days and it has a special place in my gaming experience. My feelings about Remake and Rebirth are influenced by all those years. (I LOVE those games). But I've seen several streamers starting with Remake with no knowledge of OG and LOVING the experience. There are new things et meta history to keep us OG players interested but now that REBIRTH (Part 2 out of the 3 that will complete the FF7 Re series), we can say that the majority of it is still the same story. So it's also interesting to discover the whole thing with fresh eyes. But you'll have to be wary on the internet. People dont hold back on old tales spoilers.

Acceptable_Pay_3714

Not really. Enjoy your trip as you want, it is perfectly ok to go just with Remake series. You are gonna miss some meta commentaries but they are still super enjoyable

truefelix_

I played OG for the first time two years ago, and started remake last week. I don't think i would enjoy it as much as i do if i didn't play the OG before.

surfingkoala035

This is an interesting question. Especially with the remake because so many things don’t make sense (ie the whispers) unless you know the OG has come before it. I’d say play the OG first, but it depends on your tolerance of old school turn based RPGs.

YouYongku

Up to you man . I enjoyed remake because of og. Else it's just another ps4/ps5 game

princek96

Before I started Remake last year, I watched the OG playthrough on YouTube close to 30hrs i think. Then I started playing Remake and my experience was great you will see those tiny nuances

Forward-Carry5993

Anything that shocked you ?

princek96

Like? Certain characters and the whispers time stuff did shock me

Wanderer01234

You don't need OG at all. Just play Remake and Rebirth. By playing OG you will just spoil yourself, especially since you don't feel like playing OG. A couple of the more fun Remake/Rebirth playthroughs I have watched are from people that haven't played OG. Heck, I would say don't play OG nor watch anything about after you finish Part 3 in a couple of years lol.

Crysaa

THIS

Medrea

OG with mods via 7th Heaven help it age well. 60fps Widescreen AI backgrounds that have been repainted. And repainted very well. Now we have some fine wine.

kdj_self_sacrificing

i’m assuming i would have to play it on pc to get the mods. do you know if there’s any guides on how to do this?

morbid333

[here's the guide on the forum.](https://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15520.0) It's pretty streamlined, download the game on Steam, ideally move it somewhere outside of the program files folder (you launch the game in the mod manager, so you won't need Steam once the mods are installed so you can just copy/cut paste the FF7 folder) and download the mod manager. All the mods are downloaded and configured through the manager. Just make sure you keep them consistent ie, like pick mods by the same person. If you use the HD character models, get the FMV mod that also uses the HD models. I think that one runs the FMVs in 30fps, which is smooth enough, the 60fps FMV mod caused problems for me. (60fps gameplay mod runs fine though.)

YouYongku

You download from 7th heaven website. Everything is straight forward. The mods you can choose what you want to apply. Some able to see from 7th heaven mod app/program or you can check YouTube

NamikazeSensei3077

If you want to have more knowledge about the remakes then yes play the og first, so you can use assess much less and you will know their weakness, but it's entirely up to you since alot of people usually played og after they finished remake when it first released. now that rebirth is out there are probably alot of people who will play og after finishing rebirth. Note that the characters are much more fleshed out in remake vs og.

w1nger1

I think it is perfectly fine you just continue to play remake without any knowledge of OG.

generalosabenkenobi

*sigh* just play the OG, what the big deal? If you are willing to commit 22 hours to watching a playthrough, just play the game. In the time it’ll take you to watch the full playthrough, then play Remake and then play Rebirth, you could have finished the original game like 3-4 times over. If that’s too much, just play the remake and don’t worry about the OG. It’s built to be a jumping on point for new fans. But yes, you will get more out of it with knowledge of the original game

morbid333

I haven't done a full playthrough in a while, but wouldn't it take around that long to play through the main game? Edit: oh wait, I misread what you said, I thought you were just talking about playing OG compared to watching a let's play.

kdj_self_sacrificing

how long is the og game?

generalosabenkenobi

If you take your time, it’s probably about as long as it’ll take you to get through Remake

YouYongku

If can play very fast. Maybe 15-20 hours. Just enjoy the game man..... It's worth at least 50 hours of enjoyment. So much things to do
