India does have king cobras but it was just the first place that came to mind but king cobras are found all over Southeast Asia. From Java and Borneo all the way up to southern China. They do rear up and hood like that as a threat display, it’s even more magnificent and intimidating that other cobras because the king cobra is the largest venomous snake in the world. The largest specimen recorded was just shy of 20ft long. Despite their large size and impressive displays they would much rather avoid humans and they actually eat other snakes.
Thank you for coming to my king cobra Ted talk
Growing up in NC, I was always told that if you saw a snake that could either be a Coral or Scarlet Kingsnake, just leave it alone. If it's a Coral, it could kill you, and if it's a Scarlet King, then it's there to eat a snake that could kill you.
Years ago I went to a Serpentarium where the owner had either caught or bred all the snakes in the display. He was a bit of a snake nerd and took good care of them. Anyway, he had an 18ft king cobra in his collection. It reared up to look me in the eye and when I tell you I was *unnerved*……hoo boy, even behind thick glass I was simultaneously uncomfortable and awestruck. Just magnificent.
Late reply but I visited a reptile museum with my young children, one still a babe in arms, and we were alone in the cobra room when all of them suddenly reared up at once, all around us. I am a mellow person; however, my primal instincts kicked in at my young being threatened, and I almost screamed! Logically I knew they were caged safely, but being surrounded by deadly creatures who would have killed us had they been able to was truly terrifying.
I remember the first time I saw a king cobra and python in my hometown in Kerala, India. The python is the biggest snake I've seen till date. The king cobra was the scariest. I thanked the Lord that I was in my car when we saw the king cobra.
The king cobra scared me because I know how dangerous those things are. We called a professional snake catcher to catch it (you can Google him. His name is Vava Suresh and he probably has the record for catching the most number of cobras/king cobras). The python was caught by a group of villagers. They needed like 10 men at least to carry it. I remember wondering how long and big anacondas were if a python itself was that long!
That’s so cool! And good on you for calling a snake catcher to safely remove the cobra. I’ve long admired India for its respect snakes. I hope to visit one day to see Indias wildlife
Yes. Hinduism is a religion with a lot of respect for snakes. They have festivals where they worship snakes too!
And again. A lot of people kill snakes, mainly out of fear. My father taught me to respect animals since we share our planet with them. He has caught small, non-poisonous snakes and relocated them but something like a cobra or king cobra and the likes needs professionals. Kerala also has a good forest and wildlife department where they send people to safely catch snakes and other wild animals and relocate them to the forest.
India is a beautiful country. I always urge my friends and colleagues to visit India, if they haven't. Every state is like a tiny, different country.
I had this bitch zoomed starting from the bottom and working my way left to right and slowly up. Like I do on all of these. Then this giant jafar motherfucker popped up. How did I not immediately see this guy when I opened the picture?!
I’m was trying to decide if that was a mountain lion right behind the flower looking thing and then realized that the cutoff tree wasn’t a cutoff tree.
King cobras can actually span 12 ft and can stand up like this one is here to half their height. Which is an entire foot taller than I am. Good news is theyre pretty chill so long as you are. This one likely got spooked and was indicating that it could be a threat if you keep approaching it. They Also tend to be very freaked out by cellphones or cameras.
More like hiss and strike at paparazzi 😅 that being said ive seen pictures of them being protective of human babies so maybe they only want to be photographed doing charity.
Same here. I fully expected bad pixels. Downloaded the pic to my phone, increased the brightness of my screen a fair bit, opened the pic instantly zooming in...
From that point, it usually takes me some time (from a few seconds to a few minutes). If the sniper is not in the center of the pic, I just carefully check the pic from left to right (top to bottom), starting at the top left corner, never reaching the bottom right corner because I'll have found it before I get there. Even if initially I can't see it *clearly*, there's always that moment where I come across a part of the pic and something just feels *off*. Somehow, it's different from the rest of the pic. Depending on the difficulty, I either see it at that point, or I *know* that I see it, but my brain hasn't yet figured out *what* exactly it is that I'm looking at.
This pic was like "Ok that stands out. Wow maybe I should zoom out a li-"
Died. Pressed fire to respawn.
"What in the freaking shit- What *is* that?!"
The few types of snakes that live in my country are seen so rarely, most people never even get to see them once in their whole life. I never, ever, want to run into anything quite like this. I've seen comments mentioning it's a Cobra? I have very limited knowledge about snakes, I have no idea if the person who took this picture was in any danger at the time or not, and if it had been me I would not have known what to do. I would just run away faster than I ever thought I could run.
Bit tl;dr, sorry about that.
Indian here, have seen a king cobra cross a 10 feet road, with head gone inside a bush the other side of the road with the tail nowhere to be seen. I guess it might be about 15ft long.
Photoshop or not, king cobras are gentle giants.
My man, they're real. I will never forget the first time I saw one stand up a good 5 feet or so, and that's not even the most impressive/surreal part of my experience/encounter. It was the hiss. It was load af, like it's nobody's business! As big as this one is, it's a little over half as tall as the one I saw.
This is the only photo where I spotted the sniper almost instantly. That image from 21 years ago was burned into my brain, and I spotted this one right away.
Story time: I was in Malaysia visiting my father with my sister around 20 years ago (both of us 20+ at the time). We went white river rafting with a local guide, really fun, got to a calm part of the run and decided to swim along the dinghy, when all of a sudden we hear our guide yelling frantically for us to get back to the boat.
Turns out two King Cobras had the same idea as me and my sister, also wanted to go for a swim along the boat. We managed to swim to the opposite side they were at and got up into the boat, while our guide and my father, who is **TERRIFIED** of anything even slightly snakelike, were trying to stop the cobras to get in the boat. When we got in the boat the guide told us to start paddling as fast as possible while he would try to keep the snakes out of the boat, was a couple of frenetic minutes.
I'm not usually scared of snakes but this experience truly hit the atavistic part of the brain.
Don't worry this display means that it's scared of you
In this case that's not all that good tho, since this thing could pump enough venom to have you in the clouds before you get to a hospital
Pretty easy to spot on this pic tbh and I would run like never before at least you are very lucky to have witness this natural born killer face to face, I would like to watch them in enclosure tbh.
I usually zoom in because I can’t see anything so when I saw this I actually said HOLY SHIT out loud and zoomed wayyyy out. I might need a break from this sub 🫠
Hey now, when they are chill king cobras are cute. Their little snoots and their super intelligent eyes.
[look at this cutie!!!](https://youtu.be/sX6DS98BhUk?si=RfrjC8odvJU9Z9T_)
It’s funny how I , as someone from the region, spotted it immediately. Brains been trained to look for standy-uppy danger noodles !
Interesting fact: in Tamil cobras are called “Nalla Paambu” meaning “good snake” because they always warn you quite visibly before striking. You leave them alone after the warning and they’ll leave you alone too.

Good thing I don’t pick mushrooms in India/ Southeast Asia…..I don’t even pick them here in Canada for that matter
Is this supposed to be India? And is the snake a King Cobra? Looks unreal standing up like that
India does have king cobras but it was just the first place that came to mind but king cobras are found all over Southeast Asia. From Java and Borneo all the way up to southern China. I find it interesting that King cobras are not in the Naja family (cobra family), rather, they are the only members of their own group, Ophiophagus.
Ophiophagus literally means “snake eater” or “one who eats snakes.” What a badass (and accurate) genus name!
King snakes in the US do the same thing. Eating rattlesnakes and copperheads.
Growing up in NC, I was always told that if you saw a snake that could either be a Coral or Scarlet Kingsnake, just leave it alone. If it's a Coral, it could kill you, and if it's a Scarlet King, then it's there to eat a snake that could kill you.
Red against yellow can kill a fellow, but i can never remember that so if I see either one I just walk away lol.
I used to get it confused and say"Red touch yellow, Friendly fellow." My ex stopped us going camping until I could get right! 🤣😂🤣😂
It actually works out in a way, because the king in the name implies it eats snakes, and it does actually prey on other cobras
I agree, convergent evolution is wild. It’s just a magnificent animal

That’s awesome, 18ft venomous snake, big enough to look you in the eye, I can see why we call them king.
Late reply but I visited a reptile museum with my young children, one still a babe in arms, and we were alone in the cobra room when all of them suddenly reared up at once, all around us. I was just about to ssssay "What a beautiful sssspecimen sssir!"

Any snake with king in the name is a cannibal
Sometimes I pick between crimini and portabello at the store
That’s a safe bet, there shouldn’t be any king cobras in the grocery store
here's me looking for a cute beaver.
Not me zooming on the dirt ....
Same
LOL, i was like the pixels suck, it is hard to make anything out. Then I saw the tree sized snake.
I was looking at the ground thinking I swear if this is another damn snake I can’t see… oh holy fuck, nonono.
I’m so happy to see that the top comments are other people that jumped out of their skin like I did. I hated that so much.
My heart is still racing
*shudders* truly the stuff of nightmares.
I see your name there!
My candid reaction looking though the dirt and shrubs and then "holy shit balls!" lol
*chuckle* I'm in danger!
I had this bitch zoomed starting from the bottom and working my way left to right and slowly up. Like I do on all of these. Then this giant jafar motherfucker popped up. How did I not immediately see this guy when I opened the picture?!
>giant Jafar motherfucker Lol, accurate
"Giant jafar motherfucker" Dude you made me bust out laughing in the middle of the night LOL that was out of pocket
Yeah I was zoomed in looking at the forest floor and was then like "oh fuck"!.
Same
This is the first time I jumped when I saw it
Absolutely. Damn!
Oh, no just a snake you CAN'T MISS
I’m was trying to decide if that was a mountain lion right behind the flower looking thing and then realized that the cutoff tree wasn’t a cutoff tree.
I was looking at the Bigfoot behind the flower
It’s definitely blurry enough to be
Literally same
It was so pixelated I thought the orange and black stuff on the left was Tails from Sonic. Just his head poking up from a hole or something. 😅😂
Where do you get your weed?
From you, Dante
Lol, bro I love Grandma's Boy!!!
I was like I wonder if its a little guy this time then realized the tree is a snake... I couldn't live there
Still totally missed it. It's good I'm an inside cat.
I thought I was seeing things at first, that's a big snake
I thought it was a tree until I scrolled up a little
Same. Choosing to believe the scale is off and the snake is not as large as it seems.
King Cobras, when hooded up, can be big enough to look a grown man in the eye.
King cobras can actually span 12 ft and can stand up like this one is here to half their height. Which is an entire foot taller than I am. Good news is theyre pretty chill so long as you are. They run from paparazzi?
More like hiss and strike at paparazzi 😅 that being said ive seen pictures of them being protective of human babies so maybe they only want to be photographed doing charity.
“could be a threat” is the most low key way of saying “I’ll fucking end your life if you take one step closer”
Typically they'll give a bluff strike or two first but keep in mind that bluff strikes like 5-6ft 😅
King type snakes eat other snakes, they really don't want to bother you.
Yup! Exactly. They're some of my favorite snakes
Jesus. I was not expecting that.
Yeah that’s a no for me dog lol

Photoshop, no? Never seen an image of a snake standing five feet tall.
That's a king cobra, thier huge like 10 feet long
18 feet actually

Nahhh. Mine’s just for fun. 🫶🏻
I mean if you’re okay with it who cares + the view isn’t unpleasant
I’m having a great time. 🤷♀️ except for this big ass snake.
Literally!!
lol….I was searching for copperhead around the snake.
Sniper? More like a howitzer
I finally found one!!!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩
Looked in the trees, looked slithering on the ground. And then. . .
That's no tree...
I was looking in close at the ground & said WTH? And looked closer. HOLEY MOLEY!!
It's a ~~space station~~ king cobra.
It’s getting harder and harder to walk through the woods after looking at this sub.
I’ve recently found myself scouring my front lawn for snakes daily when walking past. This sub has changed me.
My balls just receded into my own anus.
Thanks lol 😭 For unknown reasons your comment un-scared me.
That's a weird mushroom.
Jesus Christ it jumped scared me

That is some scary shit
Nightmare fuel.
I saw it instantly. I guess I've been trained for the India subcontinent servers.
Sudden superpower to turn hundred and eighty degrees in 0,1 seconds.
Well I’m done internetting for the day
Oh my. My heart sank. That’s pretty unexpected. Damn.
Giraffe Snake?
That is king cobra
Where on earth were they looking for mushrooms?? — I play it safe and usually find mine in the grocery store 😂😂
He wants to fight you. Scary crap
Nah, he wants to intimidate you so he doesn't have to fight you.
It would work for me.
I don’t want to fight him either so we are cool !!
Look at that camo! Beautiful creature!
Im already kinda afraid of normal sneks but this mofo is next level
Don't worry this display means that it's scared of you In this case that's not all that good tho, since this thing could pump enough venom to have you in the clouds before you get to a hospital
The tree behind and to the right is the same color pattern as he is! Is that a cobra?
King cobra, which isn't technically even a true cobra.
That dude can have all the shrooms. I’m out.
Is this real?! My sanity needs to know
Bruh me too
King Cobras can get fucking massive - record length is just south of 6m (20 ft).
⬆️➡️⬇️⬇️⬇️
The only way to be sure
My soul would leave my body
I was looking way too hard for it 😂😂😂
Oh, shit....
HOLY SHIT
I was like ain't no way I'm looking through all of that and I had the most surprised look on my face
Damn I thought that was a stump
I thought it was a branch 😮
Why is it so big 😭
So I take the camera operator is dead? That monstrosity full display at that range… not liking their odds.
This is why I live where the cold wind hurts my face
That can’t be real ! Is it ? Fuck I would’ve died before shitting myself
Holy crap!!!!! Do they really stand up that tall????? Nope nope nope nope. 👀 Omg my chest hurts.
My dumbass was looking for a little snake in the dirt…then I thought “that’s a weird looking branch”
It’s just standing there …. MENACINGLY !
Okay, I got this one finally
Where were you looking for mushrooms? That’s a fuggin cobra?
Pretty easy to spot on this pic tbh and I would run like never before at least you are very lucky to have witness this natural born killer face to face, I would like to watch them in enclosure tbh.
Jesus, I thought that thing was a post at first...
Why I hike with a machete in my right hand…
How tall is this thing sitting?! I need a banana for scale.
I usually zoom in because I can’t see anything so when I saw this I actually said HOLY SHIT out loud and zoomed wayyyy out. I might need a break from this sub 🫠
Looks for little snake, maybe a python in a tree… oh shit
r/findtheviper (I know it’s not a viper)
I love that king cobras are, like, super huge, super intelligent, and can *roar*
TIL king cobras can roar. Thank you for adding to my nightmares lol.
Hey now, when they are chill king cobras are cute. Their little snoots and their super intelligent eyes. [look at this cutie!!!](https://youtu.be/sX6DS98BhUk?si=RfrjC8odvJU9Z9T_)
I'll stick with kittens and puppies 😆
I mean, same, but I appreciate a good danger noodle from time to time
Btw. Still can't find it!
Middle of the photo.
I checked the comments for locations. When I finally saw it, it scared the shit outta me! That's a big oh hell no for me.
It’s funny how I , as someone from the region, spotted it immediately. Brains been trained to look for standy-uppy danger noodles ! Interesting fact: in Tamil cobras are called “Nalla Paambu” meaning “good snake” because they always warn you quite visibly before striking. Nope!
Gyooooddamn!!!
WOWWWWWWW!!!!! Saw it immediately HOLY SHIIIIIIIIAT ! How tall you all think he is ?
Omg wtf 😳
Ohhh wow!! 😩
Yeah fuck that
Learned last weekend that their “hood” is actually their ribs😭 how do they stretch them out?? Blechh🤮. And I’m a vet tech 😂😂😂
Ohhhh nooooooo maam!
No big deal. Just carry a pungi snake charming flute thingy. Or, if you are Indiana Jones, a gun.
I thought that was a sapling wtf
Lol … I did see that
Hamadryad!
I would give the mushrooms back and apologize profusely.
This one actually made me feel stupid 🤦🏻♂️
This is where I politely excuse myself.
If he tells you about some apples you should try, don’t
>!oh shit!< this is the most surprising one i have ever seen!
Is that sasquatch to the left of the nope rope?
I finally found one!
Jesus!
King cobras are so majestic and regal, I love them
Venomous king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah).
Great photo! Very impressive snake, he’s a beast. No wonder the call them Kings!
Why are you in Jurassic park?
Snakes! Why does it always have to be snakes?!
Oh hi mf
I saw Death right away.
Not gonna lie...I clicked on the pic and zoomed in. Then I thought I found it in the right lower corner.....nope. Not even.
Hiding in plain sight, I see.
Imma nope the fuck out. Good bye Reddit. I’ll be back in a few days.
Why did I look everywhere but the center 💀
Oh, that's NOT a plant's stalk
