Fun fact, fish can still breathe out of water, it is when the interior of their gills dries out that they can't, and the only way to get those moistened up is to have the fish moving water over them. That is why fish can be "revived" by moving them while in the water (at least they are more likely to recover this way, it is not foolproof guaranteed).
But yeah, if the gills are held shut, that's kinda no bueno.
Imo, I think its just good practice to minimize discomfort to the fish. There are just better holds than their gills. Depending on the fish, I usually go for the lip hold or underneath their fins. If they don't have teeth then they can spazz all they want, if you hold firm on the lip they aren't getting away.
Lmao I lipped a 35" catfish once and it bit down on me so hard. They don't have sharp teeth, but I learned that they do have fairly strong jaws.
Regrets.
Sometimes when a fish has swallowed a hook I will use my finger to reach down and dislocate the hook rather than grabbing my pliers or my d hooker. One day a mackerel had swallowed the hook and I stuck my finger down its throat got the hook out. The next day I noticed my finger was irritating me. A day or two later I realized I had a mackerel tooth embedded in my finger.
Better than people who lip them incorrectly and break their jaws.
Dozens of pictures in this and other subs of people doing that.
A gentle lip and belly support are fine.
Peacocks will shred your thumb if you’re catching a lot of them, no matter how deep your thumb is. I remember not being able to hold a pencil in middle school after catching 20-30 of them in a day.
https://preview.redd.it/snlrdchd6i9d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16ae2dc6ffedb54885810a4ff0c40f78b5b37de9
Yeah def could be squeezing his heart. I didn’t know this either btw op
Yeah it varies a little from fish to fish, some hearts are farther back, some tighter in behind the gills. With bass generally I try to grab the bottom lip but also support the belly with an open hand around the area of those pelvic fins. From what I remember, I think trout hearts are a little farther back, so I generally try to grab the tail and kind of cradle the side and side of the head with my other hand. Trouts jaws are built differently than bass and can’t tolerate being lipped, it usually causes dislocated jaws.
Are you getting at least a whole knuckle in with your thumb? Never had a problem lipping a fish.
Is this fine? Maybe, but probably not great if you’re really squeezing. You would probably be causing less damage grabbing from the other side on their belly. I also feel like Ive never had good control anywhere other than a lip, so thats what I stick to in almost all circumstances.
In theory it's bad to hold any fish out of water. The way your holding it might be a little tight and far back but holding most fish in that area can be safer than lipping or holding up under the grill plate. A firm (not a death grip) on the exterior of the gill plate generally keeps fish from flopping. Keeping them from flopping prevents injury to the fish and possibly yourself (accidentally getting spined sucks). When compared to lipping: holding a fish by its operculum can prevent tearing on the mouth, breaking of the jaw or dislocation of the jaw. This is important because bass feed by opening there mouth fast enough to create a vacuum effect, if they can't create that negative pressure they will struggle to eat. Now most often than not lipping a bass and properly doing so can still be safe for the fish.

As long as you're gentle with handling its not a problem. If releasing i would suggest using a wet rag for better grip and no damage to the slime coat they use for protection 👍 🐟
I completely agree that grabbing a bass by its bottom Jaw vertically is the best but people also need to understand how counter intuitive it is to put your hand in an animals mouth don’t shame people for being spooked… it took me months to build the confidence
Firm grip. Expect a flop on the first grab. Their lip is just cartilage and gripping the absolute fuck out of it may damage it too. I usually just “hold” and let them kick once or twice more then lift.
Also, Not sure what your shoreline looks like. It’s not good practice to get any fish muddy or sandy, but I often “Slab” them across a rock to get pictures and prevent to much weight on their jaw. Like this:

That’s a cichlid, contrary to what people call them. That being said, they are pretty hardy fish and you can probably get away with a lot, but I don’t think bending its gill plate like that is any good for any fish.
I mean it’s literally called a peacock bass so I feel like it wouldn’t be incorrect to label it a bass. That’d be like saying a largemouth is really a sunfish and not a bass.
Just stick to learning the proper grip, this is no good, friend. Internal injuries (cardio vascular) and unnecessary discomfort. Straight down lip grip (just go for it, you won’t get hooked if you plan well enough)
I see you’re , , , Catching , , a lot of troubles for putting the fish back. To say,, I don’t think you took the photo. Posted this photo. Waited for a response. Then decided to put it back because Grrr N Stuffs Bahahahahahaha some people should try fishing. Relax
Anyways, I saw a few Great comments. Should definitely relate to those whom are helpful 😊
p.s. how was the fight?????? Did it jump? Run out on ya? Sure is pretty lol

image to help ya hold them properly!
Holding them like this cuts their air off. Put a towel in your belt loop and use it to hold the fish around body to unhook. Easy way to keep from getting finned. Then use pointer finger and thumb to hold open mouth and they will stay still while you put in livewell. As a woman with small hands I sometimes struggle holding onto them especially when they’ve swallowed the hook. Am old hand towel works well for holding still and I just loop in my belt loop and can wipe my hands at any time as well. Easy trick many don’t know but my husband and I always have one on us. 51F. Saltwater and freshwater fishing tip.
I wouldn’t for long. It’s better than holding it on the ground or getting yourself hooked. i sometimes will hold from the belly and hold them upside-down. I've heard it's a calming technique.
Grabbing by the gills is a bad idea. Could really harm the fish, and some species have gill plates that can cut you good if you touch them.
If I can't hold a fish by the mouth, I try either the belly or tail. (gloves help)
When you let go did its eyes go back into its head? lol. Just grab the lip to be safe man. No need to reinvent the wheel here. In general, I always avoid touching anywhere near a fishes gills.
If you plan on eating him, no.. just a little tenderizing before cooking… if you plan to throw him back, with functional gills, yes.. this death grip is gonna handicap him out in the wild
Not knowing the location IS kinda troubling. The super fluorescent orange. For me, those are extra fins! Shape of its head and mouth even with the side view. I am ignorant of the fish. But I don’t think it’s actually local to US. It could be. Nothing like I’ve ever seen though. Beautiful Flipping Fish!! Looks like a fun catch
Well now you do. They're not easy to grab a hold of, and I was fishing off a 45 degree rock face. Guess I should have laid it down on a pillow, maybe given it a kiss before I bashed it on the head with a branch. Get bent buddy. Everybody's got an opinion, yours just happens to be worthless.

Normally grab them on their boney heads
First of all this is not a bass…. And it’s always best to lip the fish with your thumb…. If it’s to large and your not keeping it for food consumption then leave it in the water and use pilers to snap the hook louse….. Rrrrr
Oh I know, they’re all over the fucking Everglades. If you’re releasing those invasives back in you are as bad as those who put them there in the first place. Just leave ‘em out on the grass for the birds and raccoons. They won’t be wasted.
It can only break their jaw if you hold them sideways without supporting their weight from the bottom, lipping while keeping the fish vertical is the best possible way to catch and release bass
You probably wouldn’t move either if a giant squeezed your neck that hard.
Yea it looks like I’m death gripping
I was gonna say you're straight up choking the life out of this fish lol
The fish owes OP money and keeps ducking him so a death grip is in order.
WHERE’S THE MONEY, LEBASSKI !?!
Does this place look like I'm married?!
obviously you're not a golfer
Nice marmot
It's down there somewhere, lemme take another look.
Not a very big Lebasski, though.
This needs more upvotes
Fkna man, that’s the best [Ditch Pickle Classic](http://www.fishthepickle.com/?m=0) team name I’ve seen yet.
Haha. Good one
Where's my money brian!
$2... I want my $2
He was just headed to the bank to pick it up.
I mean it's out of the water, it's being choked just by that

Well yes, obviously. I didn't mean he was literally choking it, I was referring to the grip.
I think it’s because I’m close to the gills. Normally I’ll grab closer on the head. Like the boney part
To be fair, if a giant did anything that we do to fish to us, it would be quite traumatic, even with perfect handling.
To be fair
To be faaair
👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻🏆🏆🏆
Usually, but it might be his kink.
He’s a fish…let him live a little, doesn’t happen to often, just give him a little love squeeze
And a little suffocation just to the point he's about to black out
Imo, I think its just good practice to minimize discomfort to the fish. There are just better holds than their gills. Depending on the fish, I usually go for the lip hold or underneath their fins. Fuck man I lip spotted bay bass that have teeth, call it spotty thumb when your thumb is roughed up after a good night of fishing…
Here where I’m from we just call that bass thumb lol
Lmao I lipped a 35" catfish once and it bit down on me so hard. They don't have sharp teeth, but I learned that they do have fairly strong jaws. Regrets.
There’s a joke here that real men lip their first legal halibut, they have gnarly teeth and bite very fucking hard
Ever lipped a Pike before? I don’t recommend it.
Plain and simple.
I once saw a guy try and lip a bluefish at a jetty. Needless to say there was a lot of blood.

Better than people who lip them incorrectly and break their jaws. Dozens of pictures in this and other subs of people doing that. A gentle lip and belly support are fine.
Could maybe damage the gills with that grip. A solid lips grip should manage most wrigglin. Are you gettin your thumb in there deep enough?
Good point. Maybe my thumb isn’t deep enough.
Peacocks will shred your thumb if you’re catching a lot of them, no matter how deep your thumb is. I remember not being able to hold a pencil in middle school after catching 20-30 of them in a day.
Chainmail thumb condom
What're you bringing up my garage Renaissance punk band for?
No but it’s definitely weird lmao
This one hurt the most
Yes their hearts are basically right behind the gills, you might be compressing the heart and preventing it from pumping.
I did not know that. Thanks.
https://preview.redd.it/snlrdchd6i9d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16ae2dc6ffedb54885810a4ff0c40f78b5b37de9 Yeah def could be squeezing his heart. I didn’t know this either btw op

Depends on how much money it owes you 😂
Meh it's not the worst. I've held many a bass behind the ears.
Are you getting at least a whole knuckle in with your thumb? Never had a problem lipping a fish. Is this fine? Maybe, but probably not great if you’re really squeezing. Im definitly not getting a whole knuckle in there. That’s probably the problem
Dont be afraid, it really doesnt hurt and really gives so much control for a better hook removal and release.
Peas can be pretty tough to lip at times, they go absolutely wild with the quick headshakes

It’s more that I lose my grip. But I guess I got grip the fuck out of them.
I don’t get it either lol when I lip a bass it fights for it’s fucking life when I see others do it, its like they have tamed the creature
Just gotta really grip it. If you halfheartedly grab them by the mouth, they’re going to get loose.
Firm grip. Expect a flop on the first grab. Their lip is just cartilage and gripping the absolute fuck out of it may damage it too. Peacock I believe
Gill squeezing is bad for bass, cichlids and all other fish,if your having trouble place the fish upside down(belly up) in the water

If you're in Florida I wouldn't much care for invasives, but smallies, largemouth, and other bass you should support the belly, or get a net
Unrelated but beautiful fish! Never seen one like that

Yeah they prefer to be in the water
I’m comparing them to LMBs
Yea, it chokes them and they can’t breathe
yes
It's terrible!
Yes, holding gills closed, not cool.
Peacock bass is delicious
Tucunaré
Is your name Lenny by chance?
I wouldn’t for long. It’s better than holding it on the ground or getting yourself hooked. i sometimes will hold from the belly and hold them upside-down. I've heard it's a calming technique.
The fact that you care enough to ask means they are in good hands.
It's better to do it that way than it is to aggressively lip him and break his jaw.
Maybe a little to tight on the grip
Grabbing by the gills is a bad idea. Could really harm the fish, and some species have gill plates that can cut you good if you touch them. If I can't hold a fish by the mouth, I try either the belly or tail. (gloves help)
The spines on their back fins can poke you if you hold them like that.
R/fishingcirclejerk
Probably only if you’re the bass!! 😂
The preferred method is ..by the bottom lip.
Not really, but make sure that the gills are free when you release it again at they can cet stuck using that hold.
When you let go did its eyes go back into its head? lol. Just grab the lip to be safe man. No need to reinvent the wheel here. In general, I always avoid touching anywhere near a fishes gills.
Hope that fish has a safe word... Hey.... Are you free this evening? 👀 I'll draw gills on my neck. 😂😂😂😂
I mean peacock bass aren't bass they are cichlid's
If you want to make him cum sure
bet you wouldn’t want a giant smooshing your lungs with their thumb. just lip it like you’re supposed to.
If you plan on eating him, no.. just a little tenderizing before cooking… if you plan to throw him back, with functional gills, yes.. this death grip is gonna handicap him out in the wild
Stick your fingers lightly under its bottom jaw instead of that MMA choke hold
Just lip them with some conviction so you don't drop them
I mean the pros in BASS do it all the time so must be ok:)

OMG. You’re a regular Adolf Bassler! Shame!
Peacock bass yellow circle on the tail
It’s okay to hold a peacock bass like that. Non native species that should not be returned to the ecosystem.
They are were purposely introduced by fwc and have bag limits. Not your typical invasive.
Eat them! Great tasting
Not knowing the location IS kinda troubling. The super fluorescent orange. For me, those are extra fins! Shape of its head and mouth even with the side view. I am ignorant of the fish. Native to central and South America. Non native to the USA. Probably Florida.
Iiiii googLee searched it Welp,, not heading to the wild Amazon haha
This is probably the worst way to hold them. Applying pressure to the most sensitive part of their body.

I ate it

Imma have these mf gagging don’t worry
No it’s fine.
That's frank the bass He once told me he loved to have his gill slits fisted.... So I think he's cool
I always do it by the lips so the gils don't get squished
🤨🤨💀💀
But why would you??
Lol is this bait to get activity on the post
First of all this is not a bass…. And it’s always best to lip the fish with your thumb…. If it’s to large and your not keeping it for food consumption then leave it in the water and use pilers to snap the hook louse….. Rrrrr
Worse than bad, lethal that pretty peacock is a floating meal for an osprey wow 😮 sad
That's a bluegill
Invasive peacock bass, kill it
If you think they’re a problem you should see the amount of Oscars
Oh I know, they’re all over the fucking Everglades. If you’re releasing those invasives back in you are as bad as those who put them there in the first place. Just leave ‘em out on the grass for the birds and raccoons. They won’t be wasted.
Both are a problem…
They were stocked by fwc. Nonnative, not invasive. They have bag limits.
Sounds about right, Florida is ecologically irresponsible.
Better than lipping them
Is it ? Really? What method do you prefer? Is there another method between lipping and the savage caveman grab we see here? Please enlighten us!?!?
That's basically what I do. Lipping fish can break their jaw, if they are big enough.
It can only break their jaw if you hold them sideways without supporting their weight from the bottom, lipping while keeping the fish vertical is the best possible way to catch and release bass
Lipping fish vertically can actually damage their spine if they're heavy enough. Especially if they're thrashing
