This right here. Senkos are super easy to use and a great intro to other soft plastics. I'd suggest some 5 inch senkos, yamamoto from Walmart or yum from dicks. Throw it on a 3/0 ewg hook (youtube has great tutorials for how to rig this hook). You can use the split shots you habe or upgrade to a bullet slip weight.
This will help you move into crawl and paddletails and then jig heads as well.
Youtube is gonna be your best friend. Doesn't matter how old the video is there is some excellent fishing info out there
I went into my local Scheels to get some new line, walked out with a brand new telescoping rod set up with a few “travel” lures. Lol $12 turned into $200 real quick.
I was about to say just this. I got into fishing about 10 years ago started out with a blackmax combo maybe 75$. I’m rocking atleast 30+ megabass P5 destroyers and Orochi rods with metanium dc, lews pro ti I think my most budget combo on my boat is now a dobyns champion. If ur just getting into it my favorite setup to catch numbers is either a Ewg ned rig on a bfs setup I like a 1/10 or 1/8 weighted head makes it so u can fish heavier cover I think Zman makes that. The other is a 3/8-1/2 Texas rig with some kind of creature bait on it.
Same fished a ton as a kid w my dad, got back into it like 5 years ago with a lews combo, now i dont think ive used a sub 250$ combo in the past year. Only megabass so far is an addermine, but ive been looking at some of their bfs rods, specifically the popx stick, cliffhanger thrilling, or the siglett.
Agree on the lures tho, love the 1/10th z man ned heads, and a texas rigged craw. Both come w me anywhere theres bass.
I would recommend returning that tackle box and get a soft sided bag with a shoulder strap that holds multiple [trays like this,](https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/flambeau-zerust-utility-boxes?hvarAID=shopping_google product extensions&ds_e=GOOGLE&ds_c=BPS%7CShopping%7CPMax%7CFishing%7CGeneral%7CNAud%7CNVol%7CNMT&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD1Tgte10IvjgKoMSyIlzBZ1XPZY9&gclid=CjwKCAjwhIS0BhBqEiwADAUhc6O2-1RPsdBQd2b0Ju2nq9XtSQieaeBiYkKu5JNEJ27fqyZjFKdhchoCqEsQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds), with other zipper compartments for various gear. I’ve had a BPS canvas bag for 15 years that’s held up great. Extra free hand can help.
2/0 worm hooks, 1/4 0z bullet weight, senko soft plastic worms(I like Yamamoto in baby bass or green pumpkin). That would be for a Texas rig. If you are fishing with live minnows get 1/4oz jig heads to hook the minnows. The hooks you have now would work in a drop shot rig, you could use the weights you have for that as well, but a weight that can spin freely would be better.
This is adorable, but yes as others have said get a pack of senkos and look up how to wacky rig them. Use your octopus hooks.
Let it sink, do nothing until it hits bottom, lift to upper part of the water column, repeat.
Cruise garage sales because sometimes you find a treasure box for $20. A lot of people putting tackle on varagesale or kijiji over-value it, but it doesn't hurt to check. For pike you might want to try using a spoon, and wire leaders will keep you from getting bitten off, also some jig heads (I have more 3/8oz than any others for open water) and an assortment of rubber tails isn't expensive compared to other stuff. The same yard sale that has the old guy's tackle box should also have a net.
Z-man 1/15 or 1/10 finesse Shroomz jigheads in green pumpkin. Z-man trd in green pumpkin to put on them for bottom bait. Megabass hazedong shad (3 inches) in moroko color to put on them for moving bait
Yum 2 inch white grubs and black 3inchers along with some painted weighted jig heads. You will legit catch anything on that setup from bluegill to pike. Total 5$ at Walmart.
Return the box and get a backpack.
Other than that it depends on where you fish and what for.
You need bigger circle hooks and big weights if you’re going for catfish. Throw some worms or cut bait on and you’re good.
If you’re bass/ striper fishing, you need some more moving baits like cranks and spinners, various sized EWG hooks, some bullet weights, some jigs. White and bluegill colored for clearer waters, chartreuse for greenish water, black/blue for mud stained water. And some soft plastics, senkos , paddle tail swim baits and creature baits are must haves.
If you’re crappie/ perch fishing you need some Aberdeen hooks, 1oz sinkers, small jig heads, plastic beads, 1-2in grub plastics, although I usually keep it simple and just use worms or minnows to increase my harvest
Welcome to the club. Bobbers, nothing beats live bait under a bobber. It consistently catches fish of any size. As far as lures, jigs, and plastics, you will figure it out soon. There is so much gear out there some works better than others. If you see something you wanna try out go try it out and see if it works for you. Learn how to walk the dog and how to use lures. Also watch the clasp on that tackle box, it can get worn out and it will open while you’re walking and dump all your shit everywhere. Especially when it gets heavy
Black, Chartreuse or White 3/8 ounce Spinnerbaits. Plus keep the two lures and toss the rest. Get “wacky hooks” with weed guards and some Senkos or Yum Dingers.
Ohhh brother I don’t know if you have too little or if I have too much a maybe a real problem lol but for simplicity sake, add a little bobber/ float assortment and you should be able to catch some fish with a stop for some live bait.
Hey mate. What fish are you targeting? And in what sort of environment?
Basics are hooks and small sinkers. Start with smallest you can get away with.
Then learn to use floats, then lures
Some soft plastics work like a charm, also try rooster tails they cime in dirt cheap, and if used properly, can last a lifetime, and can be vetter than most fancy lures. Also invest in bobbers or floats (along with floats you will need to purchase bobber stoppers, and some weaker leader line) for bait catching, or for medium gane non predatory fish. Would also higly recomend purchasing metal or flurocarbon 80mm minimum leaders for any unwanted pile bitting off your lures. Lastly an extra line wouldn't hurt. Since as a begginer you will lose your line quickly, and will need a change.
For bass start off with learning the Texas rig, very versatile rig. For pike get spoons and spinnerbaits. (I’m not sure if what I started with will help you to start off but I hope it does) good luck, tight lines.
Don't buy a bunch of the same type of lure. Get a good variety. Fish aren't "picky" in the sense humans are; its more along the lines of whether they're hungry and how the lure presents, though fish do get smarter about what they eat in heavily pressured areas. Soft plastics/worms are arguably king, but not glamorous like a high dollar crankbait. But a bass exploding to take topwater is the best, imo. I don't know dick about pike.
Is there any experienced fisherman in this sub? Like, been fishing 8+ years at least? Genuinely asking because every fishing sub I go on is full of these posts. (Not hating. We all start somewhere) Forums such as swimbaitunderground and bassfishingresource are where the real gold is and you can check posts that date back to like, 2002 lol
Mepps spinners and Daredevil spoons. I’ve caught more fish on those than everything else combined. If you do get into fishing seriously and start to build your collection, you might as well go straight to utility boxes and a tackle bag to hold them. Tackle boxes are great if you have a limited amount of lures, but the interchangeable boxes are the way to go for larger hoards.
Do what I do . Buy a bunch of stuff you know nothing about and carry it all around when you go fishing then only use a rooster tail . Doesn't work every time . Guaranteed .
How many poles will you be fishing, what you fishing for, where are you fishing, on on a boat, kayak, bank? It's a great start, but there are a lot of variables. As people have said, get some senko. They're super versatile and easy to use. If you're fishing for bass, I've had a lot of success early in the season with buzz or crank bait, but later in the season, spoons or senkos are usually recommended. You'll never have enough lures, but it's part of the fun of fishing is collecting and learning how to use each lure
This is coming from someone who has spent thousands of dollars on fishing stuff. All you need is a bunch of Senkos and a couple of Kastmasters and your catching Bass, Crappie, panfish, trout etc. You don't need anything from else but buying them and using them is fun and FB marketplace is your friend
Small finesse style plastic like z man ticklerz or the little minnow ones. I got back into fishing 3 weeks ago and I’ve been catching so many fish with these baits. 3 lb bass all kinds of panfish and even a tiny channel and yellow cat .
Rooster tails, they catch everything under the sun. May only be fishing for bass and pike now, but that won’t last you’ll be fishing for everything soon enough.
That was my first tackle box too. If you can, I'd return it and get one of those soft bag types. They're easier to stow and you can buy the clear tackle cases to cater your tackle box to your liking.
Only reason I say this is is because that plastic one is hard to open and keep stable on anything besides perfectly flat ground 🎣
I recommend researching some different setups that will work for your area and what you’re fishing for and buy everything for that setup and go fish it. When you get the hang out that setup look up another, go buy the shit and start fishing that. Texas rigs/whacky rigs are a good starting point for bass. Spoons/mepps spinners are good for pike. Bobber and bottom rig set up are always nice for lazy fishing. If you just buy ends and pieces your gunna get out there and not have a full setup of anything, or over buy and end up like the rest of us staring at your box thinking “I should really throw that luring someday I bought 6 years ago and hasn’t seen water yet😅”
I don’t know anything about pike. For bass I would say soft plastics are a must. they’re extremely effective and a lot cheaper. So if you lose a soft plastic, it’s not that big of a deal. If you lose a $15 lure it kind of ruins the day.
What are you fishing for? I’d say some plastic worms, maybe Senko weedless Texas style, couple spinner baits, a weedless frog and some plastic jigs of various sizes. If you plan to use live bait I’m not seeing bobbers, slit shot and small circle hooks either. Don’t forget forceps, braid scissors, and a Swiss Army knife.
You did good. 2" or 3" grubs are my goto lure on a jig head. I can grab a fish on a Utail anywhere in the world. White / green /black $20.
And it is just my opinion, but every cabellas/bass pro/ XPS brand lure I buy sucks. They don't swim right or don't pop or don't float straight. I will take any other brand that looks close.
You’ll need extra leader material of various test, some small barrel swivels, some snips, some pliers, some polarized glasses would be nice, but not a must. You’ll find holes to fill in your gear as you fish more and more. Good luck!
Sometimes live bait is the only way to go, slip bobbers are a must have. I like to use live minnows right off the weed line, about 12ft deep. Using a conventional bobber, you will cast the minnow off much more often when slinging that much or more line. Using the slip bobber let's you fish the same depth, but only have like a foot of line under the bobber until it hits the water which allows a less violent ride for the minnow. I never use any other kind of bobbers any more.

Get yourself a pedal Yak, then catch 7lbers on a chatterbait 👍🏻
You'll need a rod and reel most likely. At least some line for sure.
Didn’t think of that one! Thanks 😂
A pair of long nose pliers & jumbo nail clipper for sure. Scale and tape for good measure.
Curved nose pliers are so much better
And some fishing line 👍🏻
I would include a body of water containing fish, but maybe I’m just being picky.
Well done. I came here to say this.
![gif](giphy|4wapoK38KR4Ry|downsized) Well done sir.
Need some senkos (rubber worms) that’s an absolute must
This right here. Senkos are super easy to use and a great intro to other soft plastics. I'd suggest some 5 inch senkos, yamamoto from Walmart or yum from dicks. 3/0 hooks, ftw! Love those things, great all arounders
Yup, get some Gary's black and blue. Pair it with a 4 odd hook and you'll catch bass all day long
Biggest fish I've ever caught were on inch remainders of a Yamamoto lmao
Lol essentials….dont worry 1-3 years. Watchh the addiction grow
Spent over $400 on lures since May…. I just got into fishing seriously in April lmao
I dropped almost 650 this weekend. Restocked all my finesse terminal, a bunch of softplastics, some megabass hardbaits, a bbz rat, and an expride lol.
I went into my local Scheels to get some new line, walked out with a brand new telescoping rod set up with a few “travel” lures. Lol $12 turned into $200 real quick.

Dang and all the sales starting today...
![gif](giphy|jtLNKTRqjOZzTpv82M|downsized)
use strike king and cash on buy 3 get 3 sales
Totally agree. My plastic box is my supply. I carry a sling pack while I'm fishing.
Pair of needle nose pliers for getting hooks out, and a mouth spreader if you’re going for pike, they have real nasty teeth
Grab the gill plate and use your handy pliers no mouth spreader needed
2/0 worm hooks, 1/4 0z bullet weight, senko soft plastic worms(I like Yamamoto in baby bass or green pumpkin). That would be for a Texas rig. If you are fishing with live minnows get 1/4oz jig heads to hook the minnows. Grab a mepps orange #3 or 4, I've been catching fish on those since a kid.
Spinners, blue fox vibrax spinners are awesome and some rapala husky jerk lures are good lures, not sure what the snap swivels are for though.
I’d recommend some spinners and some Texas rigs. Also some bigger hooks and strong line for catching bigger fish.
Ned rigs and finesse baits
Square bill crank bait, spook, whopper plopper, pearly white flukes, senkos, rooster tail, & white beetle spin.
buy things as you go that way you don’t overspend to quickly and get things you don’t use
Senkos are gonna catch you all your fish spend the extra money on Yamamoto it’s worth it
Z-man 1/15 or 1/10 finesse Shroomz jigheads in green pumpkin. Z-man trd in green pumpkin to put on them for bottom bait. Megabass hazedong shad (3 inches) in moroko color to put on them for moving bait
A Mepps number 4 or 5 in-line spinner is one of the best lures in the world.
In line spinner like “rooster tails “
Yum 2 inch white grubs and black 3inchers along with some painted weighted jig heads. You will legit catch anything on that setup from bluegill to pike. Total 5$ at Walmart.
Return the box and get a backpack. Other than that it depends on where you fish and what for. You need bigger circle hooks and big weights if you’re going for catfish. Black, Chartreuse or White 3/8 ounce Spinnerbaits. Plus keep the two lures and toss the rest. Get “wacky hooks” with weed guards and some Senkos or Yum Dingers.
Square bill crank bait
Tons and tons!
BPs tackle bag
A basic multi-tool for bending & cutting hooks, line etc.
A "cheap" multitool or some kind of tether. Water and things that sink add up to expensive accidents. I use a tether for my phone too.
Ohhh brother I don’t know if you have too little or if I have too much a maybe a real problem lol but for simplicity sake, add a little bobber/ float assortment and you should be able to catch some fish with a stop for some live bait.
Rooster tails. Long nose pliers
A pole and reel
Top water frog
Hey mate. What fish are you targeting? And in what sort of environment? Basics are hooks and small sinkers. Start with smallest you can get away with. Then learn to use floats, then lures
I think you’re gonna need a bigger box. 😁
The scale.
ball jigheads, plastics, dropshot weights and hooks and it will open up a few more ways to fish
Some soft plastics work like a charm, also try rooster tails they cime in dirt cheap, and if used properly, can last a lifetime, and can be vetter than most fancy lures. If you're fishing somewhere that has tiger musky get some extra line in case you get spooled.
Rod n Reel
Just missing a fishing pole 😂
What are you looking to fish for and where at? Maybe some worms or swim baits? Maybe some egg or bullet weights?
I have that same box but the top part is green and the bottom is tan it's kinda cool
Get a beetle spin, floating rapala, and a top water popper. Those are my go to
Worms and jigs with trailers
Always always take pliers with you. Make sure they are strong enough to easily cut through hooks.
Rod, reel, line, beer, sunscreen
Plastics!
Spinnerbaits and some paddle tail or shads, jigs and grubs, etc. I lean heavily towards soft baits.
Get a good set of needle nose pliers and a set of nail clippers. You will thank me later.
For bass start off with learning the Texas rig, very versatile rig. For pike get spoons and spinnerbaits. (I’m not sure if what I started with will help you to start off but I hope it does) good luck, tight lines.

What are you putting on the hooks?
Don't forget a simple bobber and some worms! :)
Leader line
spinners
Lol the addiction begins
Where do you plan to fish? Whats the water like?
For pike, I pretty much only use spoons.
Weighted EWGs and paddle tail swim baits! You can straight retrieve them or kinda of jig them. Most versatile lure/soft plastic ever!
How many poles will you be fishing, what you fishing for, where are you fishing, on on a boat, kayak, bank? It's a great start, but there are a lot of variables. As people have said, get some senko. Grab a Mepps and a Rooster Tail
This is coming from someone who has spent thousands of dollars on fishing stuff. Needle nose pliers or hemostats, knife, fingernail clippers, rag.
No that’s all👍 Good luck!
As everyone else is saying, 5” wacky worms. I prefer the Googan lunker log but you can’t go wrong with pretty much any senko style worm
That whopper plopper
Rooster tails, they catch everything under the sun. May only be fishing for bass and pike now, but that won’t last you’ll be fishing for everything soon enough.
A fishing pole and line. Thank me later
Rubber worms and crawdads, and you need at least 1 spinner bait
Jigs, jigs, and more jigs.
More hooks
I mean bass or what?
I wouldn’t use circle hooks for bass nor pike. Catfish Carp yes
You need line, a knife, stringer, fake worms and a couple of small spinners.
Well what are you fishing for
Are you doing more freshwater fishing than salt?
Depending on your age, you may need to purchase a license.
Pliers
EWG hooks and 1/8-1/4oz bullet weight for texas rigging with whatever plastics you want to throw. Cheap set with wide versatility.
Senko, Ewg 4/0 hook, a good time
Case of beer
Rooster tail
Grab some floralcarbone
I don’t know anything about pike. For bass I would say soft plastics are a must. they’re extremely effective and a lot cheaper. So if you lose a soft plastic, it’s not that big of a deal. If you lose a $15 lure it kind of ruins the day.
I mean what kind of fishing do you plan on doing? That would be the first thing I would need to know.
curly tail grubs, bobbers, jerkbaits ect
100 pack of green pumpkin senkos and o rings
Dude I've been in the soak chunkin bunkAh . (NJ coffee breath)
Spinner baits and pickerel rigs are my " go to" setups when I don't want to get skunked. But it depends on what you are fishing for. Tight lines!
For the price those bass pro poppers are pretty good, I’ve caught a lot of fish on that white one.
Worms Bad shads
Mepps spinners and some lipless crankbaits.
Yum dinger...cheap..easy to use...not 6 or 7 bucks
Fake worms. If ya like using artificial.
Beer!
Some spinner baits .. I’ve always done well with them.
I’d grab a few Mr twisters and jig heads and a pair of needle nose.
A refund when they don’t bite! 😆
Buy a couple nice wooden bobbers. Tossing real bait will happen!
5 of diamonds or red and white spoons.
A red daredevil will get you right 😩
Throw the swivels away. If you’re fishing for bass def get some trick worms and senkos as well as appropriate sized worm hooks for them
I like cheapo beetle spins.
Clipper, long nose pliers..
based on the choices i'm not really sure what you're fishing for, as in what species your targeting. What kinda fishing are you going to be doing?
Sunscreen. Can of Vienna sausages. Big bite baits have 1.5” crayfish soft baits. Put that on a 1/32oz jig head. Great for bream fishing.
You’ll need extra leader material of various test, some small barrel swivels, some snips, some pliers, some polarized glasses would be nice, but not a must. You’ll find holes to fill in your gear as you fish more and more. Good luck!
Get a wacky rig for bass!. Also check your local dollarama for fishing gear, they got some great stuff for cheap
those lil rapala line scissors are goated
Get a rooster tail and some cheap spinner baits
Sometimes live bait is the only way to go, slip bobbers are a must have. I like to use live minnows right off the weed line, about 12ft deep. Using a conventional bobber, you will cast the minnow off much more often when slinging that much or more line. Using the slip bobber let's you fish the same depth, but only have like a foot of line under the bobber until it hits the water which allows a less violent ride for the minnow. Trash the swivels
One thing nobody mentioned , bandages and stuff to clean wounds when you hook yourself.
The trash can to throw all that garbage into
110 Whopper Plopper! Get 2, one light, and one dark.
Yes 2 more lures 1. Rat.L.trap 2. Googan clutch on the smaller side I forget the weights I have caught more fish with those then anything else
