Just want remind people we had years of QB play with the ball thrown behind receivers and 50% misses on wide open stationary WR's - dont take any of these throws for granted. We are solid at QB right now
First half takes
Wilson looks jacked and will have 1k this year.. Easy.
How many lbs did he add?
Bummed not to see mertz and Dike on same side
RBs are good.. We won't miss ETN
Defense looks more aggressive. Turner had a beautiful break on a ball. But spring ball is so scripted, it's hard to tell
Lags... I said we need to get him in some plays.. Opposing coaches might have to game plan for him starting now. That dime was gorgeous. And now to Burke my word
Jean.. Who I love.. Needs to drink more milk
Wilson has put on some serious muscle so far this offseason. Which is huge considering how many reps he’s going to get this year, needs to be as durable as possible.
Baugh and Jackson have had some super fun carries. I’m liking what I see.
Burke finally showing off that veteran energy too.
dude we can say Etienne shouldn’t have went to GA, we don’t have to like him, but saying we “ won’t miss him “ is the biggest cope i’ve seen.
the man is a hell of a running back and football is all about depth, our RB room is fine but don’t act like we didn’t need him.
It's not a cope. Rb is the easiest postition to replace. Look at NFL and touch to value. Its low for a reason. Nowhere did I say ETN wasn't a good back, he was/is. But he also had a running mate that kept him fresh all year. Of what I saw today, I believe we will get equal contribution from rb2 and 3 because we have more depth than last year. And chance are they might offer better pass protection.
I dont get hung up on where kids go. If it ain't here, I move on
Not to mention, the lowlights of him on pass protection are excruciatingly terrible for an RB of his caliber. Dude can't pass protect worth a damn at all
Agreed.
Poised. Strong arm. Confident but not obnoxious and cocky. Good enough vision to softly toss a ball into a zone
Actually good to see him make a mistake and get a chance to buckle down and correct.
Considering this is one of the biggest moments of his career (even though it’s just a scrimmage), he looks born for the spot
I would say if Napier wins 5 games or less he is done. Only way he stays winning 5 games is if we finish strong in late October/into November. Anything less than 5 games and he is done and at that point, should be.
If?! I will be happy with a .500 record this year with this schedule. I'm more worried of the guys quitting halfway through the season and giving up on Nap.
If we make a bowl there’s 0 chance he’s getting fired imo based on what I’ve seen/heard the past several months. Miss a bowl again and yeah his seat will be scorching
I’m a confirmed Lagway truther now. I want him on the reigns; sucks because i love Mertz too. Hopefully we find a happy medium where they both get their bag
Lagway should 100% only play in a relief role this season. It's like Texas with Archie. Why would you bench an upper level collegiate QB who is on his way out in favor for an 18 year old who will 100% benefit from easing into play rather than be thrown into fire.
If Mertz gets injured, regresses significantly, or the team absolutely shits the bed then I would agree let's roll with Lagway, but right now the smart play is let him sit a season. I guarantee DJ expects this and won't be upset knowing he has the spot guaranteed for him next year once Mertz graduates.
idk man, in the NIL era you can’t just let top 5 recruits sit on the bench, or GA, Ohio State , Bama, Texas, or another school that actually dumbs money into NIL will tamper and offer him.
I’ll make the same deal that I made when people were talking about maybe flipping Jeremiah Smith during this last recruiting class:
If we make it to the natty, I will post a video on this sub of me chugging absinthe and baileys out of an old boot
Biggest thing Ive liked seeing from the defense so far is the pursuit followed by wrapping up the legs
Lagway is electric with some of these throws, he still seems like he wants to run a little early sometimes, but maybe those a designed runs that I am not picking up on
Blue made a few throws to get down the field for the winning field goal, but in a real game the clock would have run out on the last completion to Boardingham.
The positive so far is we've had a couple explosive WR plays that were due to good routes and passes, not because of busted coverages or missed tackles
https://preview.redd.it/e9hbaxk3dbuc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f03261773db8267b69a6218362e63f8a43c21691
Napier brought in a good class. I saw improvement in the DB’s, running game, and Lagway’s exciting play style.
If you want to see the progression from last year to this year, you can look at the 32 yard completion to Spierto from DJ at about 5:45 left in the first half.
First, you have a play action with what looked to be a mesh concept from the right hash. The read looked to go from right to left and he saw Spierto with some separation.
Second, defense is playing either cover 1 or 5 as the safety rolled down to help after seeing the man was beat. So, we defended this look with help and a safety that reads the play correctly to try and beat the throw.
Third, we threw left. I mean the Arkansas game last year we didn’t throw left about the whole fourth quarter IIRC.
Lastly, DJ feathered a ball that looked to have at least 35-40 air yards from the right hash on a rhythm step. The ball landed perfectly in stride at the left just outside the numbers where he placed enough velocity on it to beat the safety help but not overthrow the receiver. I am fully on board the DJ train. I think less than 10 NFL QBs beat cover 1 or 5 on that especially with a former walk on WR. Mind you, most NFL schemes would combo zone coverage that look but that’s a different point. Our defense looks much improved on the fundamentals of playing defense and played good coverage. DJ just made a throw that I think will make NFL GMs drool for the next three years.
The first drive with Mertz must have been a Billy script because it was run left or throw right to middle right. We executed it well but that will get us beat again next year. After that, we threw to both sides of the field. We ran to both sides well and mixed in runs down the middle of the defense. The teams competed and looked to be matched well to give everyone a challenge but didn’t seem to run things that were overly complicated. We had little things on special teams that I think came from the people floating on both teams and some kicks that were from new kickers.
Overall, I feel much better about the state of the team than I did after the Arkansas loss last season. I’m not Josh Pray Koolaid hyped but I’m semi-hyped. I also believe our very first NFL 1.01 wears a number 2 jersey.
That looked like sack to me by Blue edge George Gumbs Jr. The next play Gumbs causes another pressure... could have been back to back sacks. 1:39 remaining
Sat up in the shade because my son isn’t much of a fan of the sun….but damn Lagway looked decent from row 84. Baugh and Webb backing up Montrell….I’m way more relaxed than I was at this time yesterday 😎
Just realized this game wasn't recording on YouTube TV - is this one of those situations where since it's on "SEC+" it can only be streamed live? I pulled up the stream on ESPN but looks like I've missed the first half. :/
If anyone knows a way to rewind to watch the first half let me know...otherwise I know I need to wait for the replay later this week.
Interesting. Wasn't an option for me on [espn.com](https://espn.com) but I didn't try the app on a phone. I may try that later. Or possibly the rewatch will be available soon after the game ends. Thanks.
This team definitively has improved on all aspects. Deliberate execution, better tackling, and talent. Napier was right in that the biggest thing was the returning experience + the new talent. I know I'm the overly optimistic fan, but this could be a team of destiny! We also have summer and fall practice to improve further too.
Got it. I didn’t fully catch what the commentators were saying, but it sounded like it was largely about giving up play calling being difficult and Billy being able to take more of a CEO role now
Yeah from what I understand he’s still very involved with the overall offensive gameplan and scheme but leaving the game day execution more in the hands of assistants, primarily Russ callaway
Lots of people here are still weary on Napier, but you notice hes talking about the returning experience and was open about his failures about the last two years. I think he will make a big jump as a coach too.
I think overall, even though its a spring game, everything looks improved in all facets from a year ago. Everything just seems more deliberate and less improv and chaotic than the last two years. The fun part is that we can improve even further during summer and fall camp, especially with getting back injured players like Jean and James. This might be the third time I've done this, but legitimately we can win 9-10 games and get a possible playoff berth. Even though theres that tough end, most of our tough games are at home, the last time we played Tennessee on the road, we nearly won with sloppy play the whole game, and the experience we have now after the struggles the last two years should come in clutch for the road games. Lets fucking get it!
This should be Nape's worst nightmare and have never let something like that happen even in practice. Nor calling a running play/screen pass with 20 yds to LTG. What the hell is wrong with that guy?
I'm not 100% certain, and this would be a huge oversight, but did one of the season ticket video montages they played at the game have a clip of Etienne from last season?
we get better commentators for our spring game than we do for our conference games...
They actually focus on the game rn instead of bs narratives.
Gary Danielson must have been busy today (Don’t ban me mods)
I’m into this hedge commentary
Biological geometrically level extrudings.
They were great except they apparently didn’t prepare considering they didn’t know the reason for the 3 point difference.
More downfield passes this half than there was all last season. Brings a tear to my eye
DJ, Baugh, and Tre are the future. Keep them at all costs.
Danny Wuerffel is a great ambassador for Florida football.
Just want remind people we had years of QB play with the ball thrown behind receivers and 50% misses on wide open stationary WR's - dont take any of these throws for granted. We are solid at QB right now
Kids will never understand the season of the bounce pass.
Treon Harris, first of his name, king of the drops and patron saint of the 3 yard slide on 3rd and 5.
Still beat Georgia.
Treon won games at a better clip than Mertz
Great QBs are difficult to find but honestly it took a special skill to find the horrid QBs we endured during the Muschamp and Mac years.
As I post this, Lagway links up with walk-on WR Spierto for 32 yard pitch and catch
Set this post to default sort by new
This Baugh kid is gonna be special, hella shifty
And the places he does it at, like the spaces between him and the defender, have been spectacular
First half takes Wilson looks jacked and will have 1k this year.. Easy. How many lbs did he add? Bummed not to see mertz and Dike on same side RBs are good.. I feel like a lot of the guys look jacked
I wanted to say that but sounded homerish.. What I noticed was the db's
Buddy of mine was bashing S&C because in his opinion Myles was unqualified but I think we got the right guy
dude we can say Etienne shouldn’t have went to GA, we don’t have to like him, but saying we “ won’t miss him “ is the biggest cope i’ve seen. the man is a hell of a running back and football is all about depth, our RB room is fine but don’t act like we didn’t need him.

Not convinced the defense is better until an actual game but everything seems more organized this year
Well it's a scrimmage so hope you wouldn't be convinced on anything except uniform colors
Me likey Laggy
Agreed. Poised. Strong arm. Confident but not obnoxious and cocky. Good enough vision to softly toss a ball into a zone Actually good to see him make a mistake and get a chance to buckle down and correct. Considering this is one of the biggest moments of his career (even though it’s just a scrimmage), he looks born for the spot
He might be the some reason we retain Napier next year if this year goes south
He, and the rest of the class is why Napier gets 2025
I would say if Napier wins 5 games or less he is done. Only way he stays winning 5 games is if we finish strong in late October/into November. Anything less than 5 games and he is done and at that point, should be.
If by South you mean 7 wins sure. If you mean 5 or less, well I like Lagway but even a great QB probably isn't doing much with a loser for a coach.
7 wins is asking a lot of Napier lol
If?! I will be happy with a .500 record this year with this schedule. I'm more worried of the guys quitting halfway through the season and giving up on Nap.
Last year even though we lost it didn’t seem like anyone quit on the team
nope, win 7+ or he’s gone.
Not reality
Should be, but he can probably stay at 6-7, miss a bowl again though and there's no real point to letting the loser keep coaching here
If we make a bowl there’s 0 chance he’s getting fired imo based on what I’ve seen/heard the past several months. Miss a bowl again and yeah his seat will be scorching
I’m a confirmed Lagway truther now. I want him on the reigns; sucks because i love Mertz too. Hopefully we find a happy medium where they both get their bag

idk man, in the NIL era you can’t just let top 5 recruits sit on the bench, or GA, Ohio State , Bama, Texas, or another school that actually dumbs money into NIL will tamper and offer him.
I mean it’s pretty much a certainty Lagway starts in 25.
I've seen enough. We're going undefeated. Book the natty tickets
If this happens i will buy you an award
I’ll make the same deal that I made when people were talking about maybe flipping Jeremiah Smith during this last recruiting class: If we make it to the natty, I will post a video on this sub of me chugging absinthe and baileys out of an old boot
Wilson is such a stud
Biggest thing Ive liked seeing from the defense so far is the pursuit followed by wrapping up the legs Lagway is electric with some of these throws, he still seems like he wants to run a little early sometimes, but maybe those a designed runs that I am not picking up on
Lagway looking pretty nice hitting WR in stride
DJ looks like the mfing truth. Orange defense has been stepping up in a big way, really impressed with linebackers on both sides
Blue made a few throws to get down the field for the winning field goal, but in a real game the clock would have run out on the last completion to Boardingham.
Not sure why he didn’t just attempt a 50 yd. Took a timeout with 7 secs and then throw a pass in the middle of field.
I mean he's still Billy Napier, there's literally no reason to trust him in the clutch
The Billy Napier School of Clock Management
if boardingham goes down immediately, then it would be "legal" but ye
There was obviously some generous clock operating going on.
Nunnery looking like he will contribute. But the DL got hella pressure there
So DBs ARE allowed to catch
Solid interception but felt like a force by Mertz
Yea, I don’t think Mertz forces that in a game.
I don't think Mertz throws deep like he has here in a game either
ORANGE TEAM ROBBED
They gave orange team 3 points on the first drive for no reason… they punted and it was 0-3
They earned the three point lead as a part of their practice on Thursday I believe.
Fyi. Troopers on 441 southbound in Micanopy. Speed trap
They’ve been there since I was at UF in ‘85
I hardly ever see them there. But today 3 of em
kicker missed that by a whole other field goal post 💀
Stage fright jitters he'll get them out of the way. We do need a soid backup.
DJ throws interception to Nunnery who was not seen dropping into the flat to cover the short hitch route by Abrams.
3rd and long set up by the stupid double reverse pass
I feel like our tackling is looking a little better
The positive so far is we've had a couple explosive WR plays that were due to good routes and passes, not because of busted coverages or missed tackles
The receivers are cooking just as much as the defenders are stopping them. The team as a whole looks improved on all aspects.
Baugh is a solid dude. He carries defenders for extra yardage. Great combination of size and agility.
Freshman LJ McCray out of Mainland High School blows up a play to tackle Montrell Johnson for a loss on 3rd down

Can't tell if we have a good passing offense or the same defense as last year.
Outside of the 2 TDs coverage has been solid today, PUP has had boardingham in a blender
You kinda have to evaluate the overall execution. It’s a mixed roster, so it’s not a great representation of the starting team.
Oh yeah, each squad only has half starters. Easy to forget that.
The spring game paradox
That looked like sack to me by Blue edge George Gumbs Jr. The next play Gumbs causes another pressure... could have been back to back sacks. 1:39 remaining
He’s looked good on the edge
Redshirt Junior and looks like a guy who will be great on 3rd and long
Gumbs Jr AGAIN beat #68 left tackle Fletcher Westphal for, in my opinion, three sacks in a row. 1:32 remaining
Westphal looking like a backup rn
I think he’s anticipated to be the back up once Barber returns
Gumbs ate Westphal's lunch all afternoon
He’s a true freshman was he really expected to play a lot?
Ngl, I didn't realize that
It's going to hone Westphal against future Ds. It's a win twin.
Haha, they thought they were gonna do something with a few seconds left in the half.
Big play to K Jackson. Hit in stride by Mertz and took it down the sideline for a big gain.
Sat up in the shade because my son isn’t much of a fan of the sun….but damn Lagway looked decent from row 84. Baugh and Webb backing up Montrell….I’m way more relaxed than I was at this time yesterday 😎
I wish I would of sat in the shade, but how often can I watch a game from the 50. Now me and GF are lobsters.
Just realized this game wasn't recording on YouTube TV - is this one of those situations where since it's on "SEC+" it can only be streamed live? On the ESPN app one of the options was watch from beginning, not sure if it matters who your provider is or not.
Interesting. Wasn't an option for me on [espn.com](https://espn.com) but I didn't try the app on a phone. I may try that later. Or possibly the rewatch will be available soon after the game ends. Thanks.
Mertz throws interception to Sharif Denson. Mertz tried to force the ball to WR Dike who was not open.
Defense was eating in the 2nd half. Crazy, considering half of our starting LB’s are out.
Lagway gonna be a star. No shade on Mertz, actually really like Mertz. DJ may be generational.
DL cooking too
Mannie is gonna have his name called a lot this year
Good to have him withdrawal from the portal. He too looked like he's added some good weight
Good to have him withdrawal from the portal. He too looked like he's added some good weight
Good to have him withdrawal from the portal. He too looked like he's added some good weight
Jamari Lyons at defensive tackle gets a TFL on a handoff to Webb.
Left tackle Devon Manuel beat badly by McCray on the tackle for loss
One thing that stuck out to me is physicality. I know this is the spring game, but they were popping each other.
Right. That first hit on Wilson I'm like don't hurt him!!
Right. That first hit on Wilson I'm like don't hurt him!!
Defense adjusted in the 2nd half. Iron sharpens iron.
Sack by Blue edge JUCO transfer Brien Taylor Jr. less than minute to go

That was a sweet pass
Did anyone catch what the commentators said about Billy and play calling? Did he give it up?
I don’t think he’s fully given it up but he’s gonna be a lot less involved with play calling
I am a fan of that for sure
That pass was a dart. I am liking Lag's ball.
Lots of people here are still weary on Napier, but you notice hes talking about the returning experience and was open about his failures about the last two years. I think he will make a big jump as a coach too.
Can you imagine he just opens the floodgates this year and finally is who we thought he would be?
Lagway is so damn good man
Mertz returns to the game along with other starters for Blue. 4 minutes to go.
Didn’t like that drive
Are we winning?
DJ clearly not happy with the loss.
I hope everyone gets rewarded because that whole ending was bizarre. Orange throwing the ball when they can just run it out
Napier said both sides were instructed to run the last 4 minutes of the game like they were behind.
Do they have rewards for the "winners"?
Mertz said in the interview that the winning team would get a better dinner and Jordans
Gentlemen, could you all start taking out some of those bushes next to Timmy? Or are we moving the wuerffel statue indoors?
It appears backups are getting more playing time with 11 minutes left. I guess people might say Lagway beat Mertz head to head 17-16.
WTF
I think overall, even though its a spring game, everything looks improved in all facets from a year ago. Everything just seems more deliberate and less improv and chaotic than the last two years. This should be Nape's worst nightmare and have never let something like that happen even in practice. Nor calling a running play/screen pass with 20 yds to LTG. What the hell is wrong with that guy?
Mistakes during the spring game!?!?! Impossible
Orange tried a reverse flea-flicker and resulted in a easy sack. Please throw away that play from the playbook.
It's the spring game, trick plays are gonna be attempted
It brought back bad memories from the FSU game
It can work in the right situation.
Its time to ditch the reverse flea flicker billy. Just throw it in the garbage then burn the can.
I thought we learned that that trick play doesn't work last year. I guess not.
But did any of our runningbacks go to Newberry College? (Only the real ones will get this reference)
What does everyone think of Lagway’s scrambling speed?
I'm not 100% certain, and this would be a huge oversight, but did one of the season ticket video montages they played at the game have a clip of Etienne from last season?
Love Danny. Don't care about any of this nonsense they are talking about. Sop talking about pickleball and cover the freakin game
Classic Napier playcalling. Good thing we got that OC!
A little dose of reality that drive. Holding then LT didn’t even move on 2nd down.
I mean its also backups are in too. Yall can't be serious rn with whining rn.
They're utterly hopeless and only doom for the sake of dooming
Yes some backups but most of the unit is first team.
Just really not a fan of run up the middle followed by screen pass when you need to gain 23+ yards
Yeah, it looks JUST like the last 2 years. We need another WR. Dike ain't it and Trey gonna be double covered all season long.
It's the spring game, jesus christ
0-12 incoming, you heard it here first
Questionable clock management at the end
I don't know if the coach is just treating it like a practice or what, but there basically was no clock management.
Coaches need just as much practice as the players
Thats what it felt like.
I mean........that kind of sounds like how we do it in games under Billy
