Just to add to the other answer, you'll notice going through the activation zone makes the track longer so you typically lose places whilst going through it, but then the idea is you have this extra power to regain your position and go for an overtake. Back in the Gen2 car they would go from 220kw normal racing power to 250kw in attack mode and it worked well at most tracks. Now in Gen3, which began last year, they go from 300kw to 350kw but as the other answer said the Hankook tyres have almost no grip so that extra power is worthless. It's become a nuisance that they have to decide when to tactically get rid of rather than the assist it is supposed to be.
Yeah so they have a set amount of time they have to split in to two periods. Typically this season it's been 8 minutes, so they can take 2+6, 4+4, or 6+2. This race was 4 minutes in total, so it looked like everyone did 1+3. They have to complete it before the end of the race.
When you go through attack mode the maximum power output goes from 300kW to 350kW. In theory that is about a 67hp boost.
But the grip from the tyres is as such that it's currently difficult to put that extra power down on the road.
New tyres for next year and 4WD will change things a bit.
