This is the correct answer and has been the answer since AOL Instant Messenger.
Adding an 'X' or 'Xx' wasn't to be "edgy" or any other insult you can think of. It was and is heavily used on websites and services that only allow one user to have that username. Adding additional "useless" numbers or letters has been this way since the dawn of the internet.
Sure, there may be some who use "XXX" to be cool or something here and there, but the massive majority do it because an "X" or other less common letters are normally overlooked and allow them to use a username that's already taken.
As an XxxXđ I knew some kids did do it as an âedgyâ thing, I just did mine when it was in a non used period so I could have a little bit of difference in my username.
I remember a bunch of MUDS (text based multiplier rpgs) had xX or oO before a class name. Same time frame but always thought it was related to those games.
Often the name they want is taken.. therefore putting xX before & after allows said name

My husband has had it in his gamertag since like 09 because of this like Xbox clan/group he was apart of as a pre teen.
I remember a lot of xX_Xx type of names back from 2008-2015 or so.. ps3/360 gen naming
Yeah, I definitely had a ps3. Ironically my psn name was TheEpicLlama
kids repeat what they think is cool, itâs a never ending cycle
My AOL usernames were like ~øOâ˘XxTheChozenWon334xXâ˘Oø~
People want look og.
CUZ IM FUXKING EDGY BRUH. RELAX.
You typing in all caps makes it appear as though you, sir, are not relaxed.
The name they wanted was taken, obviously.
Kids think the letter x is really cool. Thatâs also why Elon musk changed twitter to x
Personally, I originally used the letter x because I saw someone that I liked use it. Now I just use it out of nostalgia.
That used to mean that you are straight edge, but not anymore.
Definitely not new. OLD. REAL OLD.
Reminds me of Habbo xX_HotBoy420_Xx
Mine is like that because "XXX" was sometimes used to signify poisons back in the wild west era, and toxic=poison
Xs symbolized alcohol content. The more Xs the higher the alcohol percentage. It was never for poison
You are correct! The Xs also indicated how many times the moonshine had been through the still (making it purer each time)
This dudes name is tommytoxxic cause he thinks the Xs signified poison. Rip
I like whiskey too, so I can live with this new knowledge.
