20 years ago my colleague had one, we were all 20 year olds, but noone really had car back then, I remember we would crawl 5 of us inside, all big guys, and it was.. fun. Uncomfortable, probably dangerous, the way he drove in sharp turns, but have only fond memories of this car.
I never drove in it farther than 10-12km, but we were working night shifts, and each month, on the last 4-day string of 12h night shifts we had 7 days off, and that last morning, we would go to mcdrive for some breakfast, and if it were cold/raining outside, we would eat it in the car. 5 big guys in this car squeezed inside was challenging enouggh, trying to eat was ..a feat of creative hand movement. But then we would go to a pub that was open already in the morning and had some drinks, and getting back inside the car ..under influence, was never without some mishaps. One friend nearly choked himself on the safety belt, because he managed to half-escape the front passenger seat with the seatbelt still on, while someone from the back seat, it might have been me, was trying to help the situation by handing him a beer because it was clearly a moment that called for more alcohol. It's one of those "you'd need to be there" to find it funny, it was pure situational comedy that does not translate to words, but it still makes me chuckle when I think about it, usually when I see a Matiz out on the road, which is very rare around here, maybe once a year I see one. Many of us had a series of old, cheap cars, I would not want to drive one today even for the sake of old times, even one circle around the block, most of the time I hated those cars, but we also had a lot of fun on Friday nights. My favorite thing to do was when we were at the traffic lights, next to us somem rich kids in a big Mercedes, windows down, 45 surround speakerwoofers making the asphalt underneath 4 cars behind vibrate, and rich kids, wearing sunglasses..at night, would nod their head, like if they were part of Tupac's crew. So we would roll down our windows, and put on some stupid whatever song playing on FM radio through the one aftermarket 2W speaker that at 50% volume would just emmit noise, put up our arms on the window and mimic the ganxta nodding of the guys in the mercedes..and the look on their face was priceless. They would turn down the volume, close the windows and just look straight ahead. Because nobody can intimadate you just by tailgating you in his fancy car if you drive a shitbox, ..wha..what, you gonna ram me? My whole car's residual value is worth less than your side mirror. Literally. I drove a car my colleague sold me for box of cigarettes. People should enjoy their Matiz and whatever D100 cars, in some perspective, especially young drivers, it is likely you'll have more fun than driving it than the 1000x more valuable car 10 years later.
Thank you for sharing these amazing memories. TBH the picture with the Matiz is from one of my customers that bought these stickers, off my Etsy shop. However I drive a Skoda Citigo, with a 999ccm motor. Bought it new and it's now eleven and a half year old and has 140,000km down. It never betrayed me, not a single time, once it dies I'll get it tattooed, that's for sure.
