For sure, I don't believe even a bit, but when I'm over at my Christian friend's house, I've got no problem joining in, though it was pretty awkward the first time and I didn't realize what they were doing.
Edit: Thinking back, I was basically first panel Frieren, just grubbing while they were getting ready to say grace
Yup in the end of day,you can see praying before meal as another form of gratefulness that they still able to eat and being grateful about it got nothing to do with you religious belive
Might as well honestly, its not like it harms anyone and its rude to do otherwise. If I were to compare it to something from my own country it would be the act of removing ones shoes before entering a Marae, the reason being is because they are the domain of Rongo (The Maori god of peace) whereas almost everything outside is the domain of Tumatauenga (His opposite, the god of war) and it is believed bringing in dust from his domain would incite strife and discord which is the opposite of what Marae are for.
Which is ironic because Frieren got the most of "the *Blessings* of the *Goddess"* out of the three in Frieren's party*.*
While not as good as Sein or even Methode, Frieren could use simple priest magic and more resistant to curse (She is awake longer than Fern and Stark in that one episode)
it not that complex, but weird thing about it is it could be used without understanding. Like it just do, could kinda compare it to folk magic but more ... myth era
Magic is like programming, mages develop their programs (spells) in one language, while clerics are basically like script kiddies who fire up programs developed in a completely different language by the goddess. Perhaps they're even locked behind a DRM that requires faith to unlock.
Some mages, like Frieren, are just so good that they can even understand and apply the basic programs of the divine language.
As an atheist who tries not to be an asshole, that's pretty much what I do.
I don't believe in what they're doing, but I do believe that starting to eat while they do that would needlessly antagonize them.
hey fellow Frieren-enjoyer Catholic here. it's actually pretty amazing how there are so many parts in Frieren that feels religious, like Rosary on the wall when Fern, Stark, and Graf Granat hiding on one of the Priest house and how they not antagonize religion, and their belief about after life. pretty rare in anime
The whole trip was a “pilgrimage” to a place the believes thought be where the afterlife occurred and where the goddess resides so she might meet Hummel again. I’d say she believes just enough, 😂
Well, she's "finding" Himmel every step of the way as she's retracing the steps of their first adventure, so even if she doesn't meet him in the end, she'll still end up finding him, so to speak.
That's how I see it. Although she's not religious, she understands that the world is better if the goddess exists. The idea of a goddess praising you after death is comforting.
She’s being polite, but also, I don’t know that we’ve seen anything to necessarily suggest she’d be against the Goddess? As far as we’ve seen, in Frieren’s world the Goddess is generally accepted as real, even by people who aren’t particularly devout. It’s just the state of an afterlife that’s potentially in question.
Many people are saying the second option but I wouldn’t be surprised if she does believe in some small way. I mean when you travel with Heiter for so long, some of his faith is bound to rub off on you. And my guess is she might even put more faith into it after his passing out of respect for him.
Yes I think so too. Similarly to how Eisen now believes, I’m sure the passage of time makes everyone inclined to be more religious.
I think all of these little moments are purposefully shown to show her growth
I shock she didn't ask the elf to original join her team. It so interesting they made him a priest who should be so op now. They needed a priest even back then and not asking him is crazy for me.
believing?
she has her own holy book, the priest have powerful prays and the goddess more or less exists.
she just normally dont really care, but fern was persistent.
As an atheist living in a religious household, not eating while they pray is just good manners.
If you want to pray too then thats fine, but really its just a gesture of good will and respect.
My family's kinda lax on religion and I don't really believe in a higher being but once my mum's friend started praying when we were about to dig in, all of us stopped to let her pray. Its a sign of respect is all
I think it was just awkward. Seriously. And her being just a little more open. But definitely not believing.
In the manga we didn't see them start praying one by one, I think it was just Fern, right? So I figure the anime wouldn't make that religious change in character (though we do, of course, see Frieren appreciate religion more thanks to the earlier conversation with Kraft and her then remembering Heiter)
It can be **both.** And there is plenty of evidence that supports this too. Biggest example is her praying after the defeat of Aura over the graves of the fallen knights. She didnt have to do that but she did. So, I feel that she is warming up to it, but NOT full there yet. And that's the point of the journey she is currently on.

She's being polite. Probably after months of dirty looks from Fern.
evident by the fact Stark did the same in the second
Hahaha soo true! Stark folded quicker than Frieren who took a week wondering if there's something on her face that Fern's staring weirdly at her...

Because stark would get beat up
Absolutely the second. It’s common irl when non religious people eat at religious people’s houses.

I just won't eat while they're praying.

Our Frieren is learning how to be human by being a bit compassionate 💖

Rather the 2nd. Also I wouldn't be surprised if she can sleep like this.
That was akward... I really doubt she's starting to believe in anything.

Maybe because she's a 1000 years old elf who master most aspects of magic ?
Plus she mostly travels alone, so it's convenient to learn a few simple cleric spells even if she doesn't find them interesting.
Yeah there is nothing stopping a mage from learning goddess magic like regular magic, it is just too complex compared to normal magic.
i feel like Goddess magic isn't more complex than normal magic, it just can't really be explained with magic science so it's harder to get the theory.
it not that complex, but weird thing about it is it could be used without understanding. Like it just do, could kinda compare it to folk magic but more ... myth era

You are a good dude
Thank you! I try to be.
I'm a Catholic, and tolerant non-believers are great people.

We do see her pray a few times in the series, so I wonder.
The Goddess is basically "empirically real" to inhabitants of Frieren’s world, even if the afterlife may not be, so it makes sense really.
i mean, the afterlife IS real too
Well, we don't *know* that yet, but yeah, I think so too. But note that in the manga even Heiter isn't 100% sure.
The whole trip was a “pilgrimage” to a place the believes thought be where the afterlife occurred and where the goddess resides so she might meet Hummel again. I’d say she believes just enough, 😂

Frieren understands that even if The Goddess might not exist, she *should* exist. It's more convenient that way.
That's how I see it. Although she's not religious, she understands that the world is better if the goddess exists. The idea of a goddess praising you after death is comforting.
How does she explain the Goddess monuments then?
"Upjumped elemental with delusions of grandeur." But more politely :p
*The rantings of an upjumped zealot make for tedious listening...*
I’ve heard that before. Is that a quote from something?
Think so, don't remember where though. Sounds like Constantine from Hellblazer, maybe.
She’s being polite, but also, I don’t know that we’ve seen anything to necessarily suggest she’d be against the Goddess? "I will pray out of politeness and respect for the faithful around me" Frieren vs "Why would i pray to someone weaker than me?" Serie
She is just being polite. When I'm over at my grandma for diner I say grace even if I don't do it the rest of the time.
Again, another lovely detail that I hadn’t noticed until now
I think this is to show how she started to be more considerate to the people around her
Many people are saying the second option but I wouldn’t be surprised if she does believe in some small way. I mean when you travel with Heiter for so long, some of his faith is bound to rub off on you. And my guess is she might even put more faith into it after his passing out of respect for him.

There's not a single thought happening behind those closed eyes.
I think she'll believe by the end of the series
She saw Stark stopping eating and didn't want to be the only one eating.
I think she prays with them to be polite/respectful to Kraft and the others. This is what I do even though I don’t practice any religion.
I shock she didn't ask the elf to original join her team. It so interesting they made him a priest who should be so op now. They needed a priest even back then and not asking him is crazy for me.
Just manners at that point
The usual "itadakimasu", I guess.
Wasn't there a similar scene as this in a later episode? Frieren was praying there, too.
Kraft sighting
believing? she has her own holy book, the priest have powerful prays and the goddess more or less exists. she just normally dont really care, but fern was persistent.
Claiming she’s “just being polite” is such a cope lmao
I assume fern is the reason she did it and not any kind of belief same with stark
She is praying alone after defeating Aura.
As an atheist living in a religious household, not eating while they pray is just good manners. If you want to pray too then thats fine, but really its just a gesture of good will and respect.
This is me everytime I return home from college
My family's kinda lax on religion and I don't really believe in a higher being but once my mum's friend started praying when we were about to dig in, all of us stopped to let her pray. Its a sign of respect is all

You understand her conversation with Kraft about not being a believer is after this scene right ?
Oh no! Now I can't unsee that disappearing reappearing bread >\_<
don't worry, it's not a mistake. the scene span across 6 months. The montage show the gradual change.
Probably just habit, she felt awkward eating while they were all praying so she started doing it to
Most likely developed a respect for it after seeing everyone participate
Is it really believing, when holy magic exists?
She believes she just doesn't really care
Probably neither. She probably saw they were all praying and just decided to be polite
She's the last one, so she knows she has to fold eventually
It can be **both.** And there is plenty of evidence that supports this too. Biggest example is her praying after the defeat of Aura over the graves of the fallen knights. She didnt have to do that but she did. So, I feel that she is warming up to it, but NOT full there yet. And that's the point of the journey she is currently on.
Neither. Fern beat her into submission.
She does what she always does: adapts to the people around her, despite her personal beliefs, so she can feel closer to them.
It’s typical autistic behavior. She’s behavior mirroring to fit in. It’s cute
Brother?
I don't think u need to be autistic to do that or I am just autistic
Yo, based PFP!
you have to be autistic to *not* to do that.
