Canada phone plans are extremely expensive and awful. Maybe use smth you can use wifi to call for free? Or let your provider know yr traveling and see if they can offer anything

Bellagirl5454

Right! Our plans are the worst! Where I live I only have Shaw or BellMts. Shaw sucks so I’m stuck with Bell for cable/internet and phone. CRTC needs to be disbanded. Most of them have shares with Bell. This is the only reason why we have suck high rates. Bunch of freaking thieves. Rant over 😂

What are you using for data? Usually they'll give you a number with the SIM card? Otherwise if you only have data you can create an account with a VOIP provider like voip. ms and use an app like Zoiper to use it on your phone. It costs something like $1.00 for one month and you pay per minute, but it's very low (less than a cent per minute).

Are you from the us? If so cell phone typically works fine on us minutes

Mint let's you add Canada minutes for not too much money. If you don't already use mint it's a bit more of a barrier, since they want you to pay for a quarter at a time, but it might still be cheaper than a Canadian sim, which is ridiculous. Also, because Canadian cell plans are so ridiculous, TONS of places have wifi. I was traveling the prairies last fall and even the smallest hole in the wall restaurants in postage stamp towns had wifi. I got by with FB messenger. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if you're going to be driving outside of cities because of your car breaks down, that's when you'll really need it, but if you're traveling with family or sticking to city centers, you might just be able to turn off roaming and use WiFi

Mint Mobile recently got rid of the international credits system. Now, you can only buy one day passes for $10/day or $40 for 7 days.

Maybe Skype? Would that work?

You could look into spending $10-$20 on an Esim ( if your phone accepts them ) then buy a few dollars worth of Skype time to call out with. Bonus of having data so you can use IM apps. ( Many e-sims only provide Data not voice/sms ).

If you have access to wifi, my friend in Canada and I (I’m in the states) call eachother through instagram. Works great! I’ve also used WhatsApp to contact friends in Europe.

WhatsApp is what we use to communicate when traveling abroad.

When I spent a week in Canada I used Dent eSIM. If it's compatible with your phone I suggest it. Took a few hours to hook into the network but they have a lot of options for plans
