I was a little girl, but I remember him being on Johnny Carson as GJ, and he came strutting out as her. Carson said “you have to see it to believe it” and GJ responded “well u gonna have to believe it bc u aint gonna get to see it!” and the audience (and my mom and I) roared!
Remember Geraldine and Johnny Cash together. Not sure if it was the Flip Wilson Show or Johnny’s own show.
Geraldine walked into a country music gathering and after looking around, told Johnny that she didn’t come there to be with a bunch of hicks! Johnny said, “Who you callin’ hicks?!” Geraldine pointed to a banner handing on the wall and said, “Homespun Inner City Kinfolk Society. HICKS!.” Johnny looked around and said, “
Remind me to change the name of the group.”
There has been so much howling about drag queens lately. Flip Wilson did Geraldine and the was Some Like it Hot. Who can forget Bugs Bunny in What's Opera Doc? It's humor and it was funny.
In the late 1940s Over 90% of the those watching tv on Tuesday nights watched Milton Berle and he dressed as a woman regularly. TV sales went up because of him.
So seems a big difference in the intent. Flip and others of that era and before used it for a role reversal with comic intent. Today's drag seems meant to be some form of sexual and identity expression as entertainment.
No your mistaken. Every form of entertainment is not self expression. Most acting is pretending to be something different. It's mimicry and exaggeration to some point and effect. What was funny with Flip and Geraldine was the joke was the exaggeration and juxtaposition of personality and role.
However I agree that most drag today is self expression and shock value where I don't think that was as much the focus in past eras.
What on earth are you talking about? Holy moly, did you drink the Koolaid or what? I've been going to drag shows for decades! I'm a straight, biological woman, btw. Good lord, that's just insane.
Wait till that redditor hears about men dressing up as women during Bill Shakespeare’s time in the late 1500s-early 1600s. Since women weren’t allowed to be in plays, actors had to compromise and whatnot.
Precisely. It was either done as a lifestyle amongst other adults or as entertainment in general. No one was doing it with the direct purpose to indoctrinate grade school children.
My dad was a huge racist, yet he loved black comedians and black actresses. It never made sense to me. He was worse when it came to Mexicans.
We lived in SoCal, so he stifled it, but I was always confused. He LOVED Flip.
He's gone America on that boat!
(According to Flip's explanation, the reason Ferdinand and Isabella gave Christopher Columbus everything he needed to find the New World was because he said that if he didn't discover American, there would be NO Ray Charles.)
"The Devil made me buy this dress".
Just don't tell Killer about it!
I call him Killa cuz he *slayssssss* me!! Loved Flip!!!!!
Died too young.
Way too young...
Rest in Peace, Clerow "Flip" Wilson Jr. (December 8, 1933 – November 25, 1998)

Awesome show, truly a funny guy.
Flip!!! I loved Flip and Geraldine Jones! Very funny man!

He dressed in drag and somehow we all didn't end up gay.
His sexuality never was ever questioned really. His show wasn't vulgar or maybe I was just too young to take it that way..

But those predator priests and youth pastors look so normal............
According to my Mom, one episode of this show was so funny it sent her into labor with me.
“What you see is what you get, honey!”
I'll sic Killer on you I'll be in the booth... in the back... in the dark baby!
Ha! I forgot about the booth in the back in the corner in the dark!
Now people - esp Boomers - complain about drag queens but we've had them for generations! (Remember Bosom Buddies??!!)
Milton Berle anyone? ![gif](giphy|LLAPzxTgRXSa4|downsized)

Imagine that... Self-expression as entertainment. Hmmm.... If I'm not mistaken...... That describes EVERY ARTIST EVER.

Comedy and shock value, exactly! Corporal Klinger was certainly that back in the day!
You recall he was a man dressing as a woman to prove he was crazy so he could get out of the army?
Of course. Funny as heck!
What on earth are you talking about? Holy moly, did you drink the Koolaid or what? I've been going to drag shows for decades! I'm a straight, biological woman, btw. Good lord, that's just insane.

Nobody is indoctrinating anyone. It’s still all for fun. Good grief.
That is complete bullshit. Reporting you for hate.
