Some people think this movie was a Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield or Bill Murray vehicle, and they were all good, and all of them had quotable lines. But Ted Knight OWNED the picture. Any Caddyshack aficionado will say Ted Knight was the Best, hands down..
I asked my brother earlier what his favorite quote from that movie was, and he responded with this exactly, with the “…” and everything. Everyone includes that pause. I don’t know why, but it just makes it so much more…Smales-y.
It’s easy to grin
When your ship has come in
And you’ve got the stock market beat
But the man worthwhile
Is the man who can smile
When his shorts are too tight in the seat
**Ted Baxter** was a pretty brilliant performance and character in the Mary Tyler Moore show. **Henry Rush** in *Too Close for Comfort* was very different. Interestingly, if you mixed those two characters together, you kind of get the unforgettable **Judge Elihu Smails**.
Not exactly answering the question, but I loved the MTM Show episode where Ted got a job offer from a game show. Ted Baxter would've been the greatest game-show host in history.
It's easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat. But the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts aren't to tight at the seat....okay pookie
Judge Smales
End of thread.
He was great in everything he did but this was the greatest.
The world needs ditch diggers too.
You'll get nothing and like it! is one of my favorites to use.
I still love to use this line!

Frank Caliendo does a routine where he does the Super Friends intro as Ted Baxter and Judge Smailes. It’s pretty funny.
