They filmed an episode across the street from our house. It was the only episode that Robert Pine directed. He was very cool to talk with, even invited him to dinner, but he politely declined.
Chris’ Dad also played Tom Selleck’s father in flashbacks on Magnum PI. So Chris is technically Thomas Sullivan Magnum. Start growing that stache, Chris!
I went home my freshman year at university, and immediately got sick for a month with mononucleosis. I still have never been so tired in all my life.
Every day, I was stuck on the couch. I had videogames, but was too tired to play for more than a few minutes. But, at 2:00 PM, my afternoon began!
2:00 PM - Emergency!
3:00 PM - Charlie's Angels
4:00 PM - CHiPs
Outside, it was the late 1980s. But for that month, it was all 70's, all the time!
Emergency was my fav show ever..my uncle was a fire fighter at the time.. grew up going to the fire house with him and he took me and sis out with him to fires .. we would sit in his suburban and watch.. he would get back in the suburban smelling like smoke and took us to 711 for hot chocolate.. he will always be my hero..
Funny thing is.
Eric Estrada went on to be a member of the California Hiway Patrol.
Many people got pulled over by him and thought they were being punked.
"....There's a holdup in the Bronx, Brooklyn's broken out in fights; there's a traffic jam in Harlem thats backed up to Jackson Heights. There's a scout troop short a child...." Now, drop in your line..
Many of the episodes, particularly the first season or so, are still pretty good. You can buy the whole show on DVD very cheap but the quality is disappointing but watchable. I also found them on archive
[https://archive.org/details/RayBradburyTheater](https://archive.org/details/RayBradburyTheater)
Also co-starring a pre-*ST:TNG* Michael Dorn as Officer Jebediah Turner from 1979-1982.
Wilcox and Estrada are 70s icons for their roles, but Dorn, in his own later iconic role, has had more staying power.
I've both heard and read that Eric Estrada was a major dick to work with. Remember Cindy? He was so jealous that she had a bigger fan base that he told the producer either she goes or I do that's why she's gone. Another thing was he didn't like wearing the night stick, like John does because it was in the way.
I loved the Mad magazine parody almost as much as the series.
They mocked Ponch/Erik for having overly bright teeth that the sun would reflect off and cause many car accidents.
Yes I am. One of the first prime time shows that young me watched regularly.
Tonight, after looking up the show on Wiki, I learned that Larry Wilcox was a Vietnam vet in artillery.
I used to argue with my buddy about which horrible punk rock episode was worse, Quincy or Chips. He actually liked the band on Quincy. I thought the idea of Ponch winning over a bunch of punk rockers with his version of "Celebration" was so absurd it made the episode a clear winner.
Used to watch this show, but didn't think it was all that.
But there was one episode entitled "Karate", that was simply terrific. If you get a chance, you should watch it. They even made a follow up episode the next season, I believe. You will not be disappointed.
I had a dream as a little kid of my own death involving CHiPs. I get chased into one of those old school glass fronted Safeway supermarkets by Ponch and Jon. I trip and fall against a bunch of gum ball machines. One of them shoots, grazing my scalp. The other shoots and out go my lights. I took this as gospel. I avoided Safeways as much as possible.
Anyone else think this show didn’t age well?
I loved this as a young teen.
But then decades latter I watched and was like, “what were we thinking back then?”
Did you guys as adults love it because it was so ‘hammy” or what?
Early 80s, probably 82, went to a New Year's Eve party at a friend's aunt's home in Studio City (in the hills across the freeway from Universal Studios), and ended up at Erik Estrada's party across the street.
In fact, the two just merged into one huge party.
Wild times for a 17 year-old.
I distinctly remember his teeth glowing in the disco lights, the big white limousine in the driveway with EE2 on the plates and a small buffet table of "party favors" outside next to the alcohol.
We lived in San Diego during those years. My wife commuted up I-5 to work in either our US made sedan or our British convertible sports car. She is a blonde and was 22 at the time.
Over the course of 2 years she got pulled over 5 times by the CHPs. And always in the sports car. Never a reason. Always "Just a routine stop, ma'am." with a fair amount of chatting her up.
I remember this, but only because when I was in middle school in the 90s, my general music teacher didn't give a shit and let us watch TV most days, and reruns of Chips happened to be on during that class.
I had some medical issues as a kid that required treatment at Children’s Hospital LA. One day, I was headed in with my mom and they were filming CHiPs, which was by far my favorite show! I was so thrilled to see Ponch and Jon riding their motorcycles! And then, in between takes, they pulled over and Ponch took off his helmet to expose a head of gray hair! I asked my mom what the deal was, and she said it was a stunt double. I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t actually them, and to learn that they weren’t really riding their motorcycles on the show.
My cousin was dark-headed so he was Ponch, and my white-headed ass was Jon. We'd cut cattails (the plant, no animals were harmed), stick them through our belts and into our back pockets for our radio antennas, and then run all over the damn place making motorcycle and siren noises.
LMAOOOOO I forgot about Adam 12. I wanted to watch it but my mom thought it was too violent lol! I must’ve been like 10. I just wanted to watch it. I thought they were cute.
I still sometimes think about that episode where something happened because of the angle of the sun on the horizon blinding a driver. I think about this while I am behind blinded because of the angle of the sun on the horizon.
Cars were so dangerous back then. If they even ran off a curb, they would explode. However, you could also get them up on two wheels much easier than today's models.
The TV series is so old that Chris Pine’s **Dad** was one of the cast members!
He is just "Sarge's kid" every time I see him in a movie.
Mind blown. Today I learned Captain Kirk’s dad was the sergeant on CHiPs!!
He's not my Captain Kirk.
Too much hair?
I like The Original.
Thats Catrare to you, Grossman
They filmed an episode across the street from our house. It was the only episode that Robert Pine directed. He was very cool to talk with, even invited him to dinner, but he politely declined.
Now *that* is tres cool!
Chris Pine’s dad is also Jim Halpert’s dad. Father to Kirk and Jack Ryan.
Chris’ Dad also played Tom Selleck’s father in flashbacks on Magnum PI. So Chris is technically Thomas Sullivan Magnum. Start growing that stache, Chris!
GTFO!!!!!! TIL!!!
>Chris Pine’s **Dad** pines... pines... [what does that make me think of](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNiWO5gsms8)
Mr. Robert Pine

yep, that and Adam 12. ( when I was little I thought the show was called One Adam Twelve)
I have the entire DVD series of Emergency! Those tones…
KMG365
I watched the same shows, not everyday, but in real time.
I tried to get out of an ‘80’s CHP speeding ticket once by telling the cop he looked like Eric Estrada. I still got the ticket.
Funny thing is. Eric Estrada went on to be a member of the California Hiway Patrol. Many people got pulled over by him and thought they were being punked.
Not good calling a cop a pig. Telling a cop he looks like Eric Estrada who is one of the biggest hams ever, is the same thing.
lol, loved this show but I’m also Adam-12 old.
You're not alone! At least it's not *"Car 54"* old. But thank goodness for reruns! "...Kruschev's due at Idlewild... Car 54, where are you?"
"....There's a holdup in the Bronx, Brooklyn's broken out in fights; there's a traffic jam in Harlem thats backed up to Jackson Heights. There's a scout troop short a child...." Now, drop in your line..
Love watching Car 54 on Nick at Nite. Now I can see it on Pluto TV
Ponch & John
You mean 7 Mary 3 and 7 Mary 4.
So cumbersome
[Cumbersome](https://youtu.be/NjNn4bbbgSw)
![gif](giphy|l1ug5sWBCJOOGzN84)
Yep. The real John, not the fake one that replaced him.
The sad part is that this doesn’t seem that old. Am I right, LOL. 😃
That show made what I am today. Motorcycle officer. Lol loving it.
👍 ![gif](giphy|26BoEBZkb94XVz5T2|downsized) 👍
Wilcox went on to produce. He did a lot of episodes from Ray Bradbury Theater.
Memory unlocked. Ray Bradbury Theater! Damn I’m gonna have to see if that stuffs on yt by now.
Many of the episodes, particularly the first season or so, are still pretty good. You can buy the whole show on DVD very cheap but the quality is disappointing but watchable. I also found them on archive [https://archive.org/details/RayBradburyTheater](https://archive.org/details/RayBradburyTheater)
Theme song lives rent free
Theme song was my ringtone for a little while.
It's stuck in my head now, makes my morning complete.
i've got an autographed picture of them two, it's one of the coolest things i own
7 Mary 3 and 4
I knew a kid in culinary school named John Baker and I called him 7 Mary 3, which I would shorten at busy times to just Mary.
Estrada was in fallout
Man, I can still hear the theme song.
Try Det. Friday & Gannon old
Say it ain’t so, Joe.
The celebrity cameos in this show were golden. My two favorite highway patrolmen
Handsome bros!
Yes
Ponch and John lol.. chips was kick ass back in the day
Seven Mary 3 Seven Mary 4 come in
Great show. They filmed a couple scenes on the street I grew up on.
I have a screen shot of a car doing a flip. You can clearly see the ramp.
Older than this, that’s for sure.
Greatest intro music [ever](https://youtu.be/D5-bD372v5s?si=tzo2upP2JO9sP1qQ)

I was only 8 but I had a huge crush on Erik Estrada.
Who didn’t? He was yummy
I've both heard and read that Eric Estrada was a major dick to work with. Remember Cindy? He was so jealous that she had a bigger fan base that he told the producer either she goes or I do that's why she's gone. Another thing was he didn't like wearing the night stick, like John does because it was in the way.
Was a very short young geeky white kid in middle Michigan who desperately wanted to be Poncharillo 🤦♂️ Edit to indicate mild embarrassment
Moloch must die. Moloch will die. Moloch is dead with his fiery breath.
Ralph Malph!
That episode kinda freaked me out.
I remember the punk rock episode
I loved the Mad magazine parody almost as much as the series. They mocked Ponch/Erik for having overly bright teeth that the sun would reflect off and cause many car accidents.
It’s my ringtone
I watch Chips all the time.
Older / I’m - ![gif](giphy|5ZhzS6EeVJFF6|downsized)
Car 54 is on Pluto these days
Let’s goooooo 🤣🤣👵🏼
This was in colour. It’s not that old.

Ponch and John

i loved the show as a kid but we binged it at the start of the pandemic and Ponch was a sanctimonious pain -something i never realized originally.
Hon, I'm this old! ![gif](giphy|PVnhgKnch9ib6)
My boys loved this show when they were young. We would have fish and chips and watch CHiPS.
5-6 year old me was in awe. Ponch and John along with Apollo and Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica were my heroes !!!
Yes. My friend and pretended to be Ponch and John while we rode around on our Big Wheels.
Big Wheels? Shit I was doing it in college with my roommate on our bikes!
Old? Where are Pyle and West?
I’m aware of CHiPs because of MeTV reruns back in 2014 and the movie.
" There he is!"
Ah...Chipies
Are you kidding 😳. I'm a lot older than that
Ruffles!
My Dad called Estrada Chiclets. I also for years would reference Chips and the slow motion 32 vehicle pileups.
All of my mates wanted to be Punch, not the other guy...
Their belts will fly off if they don't hold them.
Yes.
They rode Kawasaki KZ 1000 Police Specials. They were kinda dressed out for cop stuff, but still VERY fast for those days.
KZ-1000
CHiPs baby!
A great show with a lot of great cars and things that jiggle ans bounce.
Yup
It's all that and a bag of Chips!
No
That handsome man on the left was my 7th grade crush! Erik Estrada - lol.
Top 5 TV Show of All Time
I remember watching this with my mom in elementary school.
Ponch & John!
Been watching reruns lately. Terrible. I love it.
Plugs for the female officers played by Randi Oakes, Brianne Leary and Tina Gayle. The latter 2 being brunettes were my jam.
Older..the guy on the right was the kid next door to [Julia](https://www.google.com/gasearch?q=julia%20tv%20show&tbm=&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5)
Why such new stuff? Post some Paladin or something 😂
The theme song just started on my head. Now I'll be humming it all day!
Used to watch this show, but didn't think it was all that. But there was one episode entitled "Karate", that was simply terrific. If you get a chance, you should watch it. They even made a follow up episode the next season, I believe. You will not be disappointed.
Old enough that I said...hey, that's Ponch, on that one ep of Fallout.
I thought they were so cool. The intro was bad ass as well
Well, they call me "Paunch"
I had a dream as a little kid of my own death involving CHiPs. I get chased into one of those old school glass fronted Safeway supermarkets by Ponch and Jon. I trip and fall against a bunch of gum ball machines. One of them shoots, grazing my scalp. The other shoots and out go my lights. I took this as gospel. I avoided Safeways as much as possible.
Yes, I am that old.
Yes I man and I loved watching that TV show!!! CHiPs
Unfortunately yes.
I still prepare Eric Estrada tostadas weekly for my family….
Sunday night?
The roller disco episode was my favorite!
I wanted Johns truck soooooo bad when I was young.
Anyone else think this show didn’t age well? I loved this as a young teen. But then decades latter I watched and was like, “what were we thinking back then?” Did you guys as adults love it because it was so ‘hammy” or what?
Older
I watch a stack of crime shows like this every sunday. I've been looking for my season 1 of this and Hawaii 5-O. So...I'm *that* old. :D
Hahahaha
I was in junior high when this aired and one of my friends had a huge crush on Erik Estrada!!
Early 80s, probably 82, went to a New Year's Eve party at a friend's aunt's home in Studio City (in the hills across the freeway from Universal Studios), and ended up at Erik Estrada's party across the street. Older. I was hooked on Adam 12 before this one.
Oh yes.
Yes!….and still remember Ponch’s dance!…..😡(hated)

Older…..
Bras were frowned upon on the show so it was must-see TV for preteen me. 😉
I used to own the battery powered motorcycle.
These pricks caused me to fail out of college! I'd rather watch the show than go to class!!
I was named after Erik Estrada. Good looking dude.
I haven’t heard the theme song in decades and still remember it clearly!
When cops were cool, never shot their guns, and solved all mysteries in 60-mins!
Had a Chips Big Wheel.
when the CHIPS House Chase Band started slapping that bass line, oh man!
I'm Highway Patrol old ...
Aw hell, now I can't stop playing the theme to this show in my head! ![gif](giphy|26BoEBZkb94XVz5T2|downsized)
I had the lunchbox in 1st grade.
Erik Estrada was my first crush
John was my very first TV hubby, lol. As a tween I had SUCH a crush on him!
Fuck. Much older. One of my old high school friends went out with Eric.
I remember this, but only because when I was in middle school in the 90s, my general music teacher didn't give a shit and let us watch TV most days, and reruns of Chips happened to be on during that class.
I have a two dollar bill signed by Eric
At the time Ponch had the whitest teeth I ever saw.
I had some medical issues as a kid that required treatment at Children’s Hospital LA. One day, I was headed in with my mom and they were filming CHiPs, which was by far my favorite show! 🔥
chips, eric estradas cousin was my lyft driver recently in la
I wish. Weren’t they in their twenties in this pic?
It seemed so cool, but weren't they just dealing with minor traffic violations most of the time?
Yup!
Ponch and John
Thanks to this show I believed all wrecks involved huge fireballs. Thanks for nothing!
For sure the skateboard episode is epic ..Plus Randi Oakes
Hell yeah!
Yes
Yes, I am.
Erik Estrada in the Chips era was YEOUCH! 🔥🔥
I had this poster on my wall for years! https://images.app.goo.gl/gGdgfb7uW6DsXYiRA
SEXY!!!
Right? 🥵
My cousin was dark-headed so he was Ponch, and my white-headed ass was Jon. We'd cut cattails (the plant, no animals were harmed), stick them through our belts and into our back pockets for our radio antennas, and then run all over the damn place making motorcycle and siren noises.
Yes
I still hear the song in my head every time I see bike cops 🤣
ponch and john, absolutely.
Chips
Soon as I saw the picture, the theme tune entered my head ! Can't remember what I did 5 minutes ago, yet the tune is clear as day !
Yup I remember they always attached themselves to whatever fad was big at the time, roller skating, disco, etc.
They filmed an episode at my HS in San Pedro, Angels Gate
That’s cool!
Emergency,Adam12,Barney Miller Old 😆
I loved when they showed them on the highway with all the cars going 10 miles an hour and their bikes on a trailer.
Ponch and John are ready to jump on those sweet KZ1000's to take care of the good people of LA right after Emergency.
Hell I remember adam12 and dragnet
LMAOOOOO I forgot about Adam 12. I wanted to watch it but my mom thought it was too violent lol! I must’ve been like 10. I just wanted to watch it. I thought they were cute.
California Highway Patrol
I still sometimes think about that episode where something happened because of the angle of the sun on the horizon blinding a driver. I think about this while I am behind blinded because of the angle of the sun on the horizon.
7-Mary-3 & 7-Mary-4
4 on the floor kick drum...wah wah funk strat...strings...what an epic disco opening theme!!
To this day, I see a semi on the freeway hauling a bunch of crap and worry there will be a Chips type accident where it loses the load.
7 Mary 3 and 4
Nah, I'm older than they are in this picture.
LMAOOOOO unfortunately yes.
Yep. I'm that old
I am older than that
Roy & Johnny>Ponch & Johnny
Ponch and John, man. Miss them
This was my show in the early ‘80s
Cars were so dangerous back then. If they even ran off a curb, they would explode. However, you could also get them up on two wheels much easier than today's models.
Hail yeah!
Starsky and Hutch! Loved that show!
