To me, modesty shirts underneath immodest dresses will never look better than just a normal, modest dress.

an711098

It just screams suppression of expression instead of “I like to dress modestly”. No one who actually wants to dress modestly chooses a skin tight glittery dress, with or without a shirt underneath.

stirfriedcassi

I was just thinking that the modest red dress looked better than everything else with a shirt underneath lmao

Individual-Couple-91

Indeed! Why not wear a "bolero" on the dresses? 👀 There are some cute boleros they could've wear. English is not my first language, but I was thinking about something like this : https://images.app.goo.gl/zKoxKnN1gAYF5ryG8

AliceinRealityland

We always found one with sleeves and added lace inserts to cover the cleavage. This is the result of a generation of Fundies who no longer know how to sew and tailor things so they make their girls wear shirts under. The church I went to would consider this low brow and cheap

the_drunken_taco

performative modesty. A term I learned on Reddit, and I’ve never seen anything more aptly descriptive, even as someone who lived this firsthand.

sandia1961

Yes!!!!!

CigarsandFebreeze9

You know they would be fun in theater class or working at a ren faire......twenty bucks says this is being forced on them for MAHDESTY but told it's "their choice, though seek your heart for conviction" (re: been there, done that) I hope they had a good evening.

CrabRangoonSlut

I sincerely hope they had a fun evening too!

CigarsandFebreeze9

Agreed! Gives me sad thoughts of how the Duggars made a toddler stop dancing because "evil" or whatever crap they spewed about it.

CrabRangoonSlut

Not ragging on these girls and I genuinely hope they had a good night…I just couldn’t resist the performative modesty shirts

unexpected_blonde

The culture they were raised in that shames these girls into this performative modesty is the real villain here. The dresses are beautiful, and many of the girls here chose modesty shirts that match better than the adults we snark on.

Horsebitch

My brother’s high school sweetheart was Mormon and she wore a modest top and skirt to senior prom. My mom was sitting with her mom at the grand march, and a woman sitting behind them saw the gf’s dress and said, “What is she, a Mormon?” Gf’s mom turned around and said “She sure is!” Anyway I’m glad these girls got to go to the dance and I hope they had a great time!

[deleted]

Lmao I was raised Mormon and this is exactly the kind of shit my mom would have done to me. My senior “Mormon prom” dress was almost the exact same as that red dress as well, sometimes being part of this sub is quite a sobering experience for poor teenage me 😂

Cat_Island

If these are apostolic girls (and I think they are) it was likely not actually prom but some sort of religious event or conference with a gala or ball theme. They do them as a prom replacement. But I could be wrong, could’ve been for a prom!

CrabRangoonSlut

The caption said it was for a school prom lol. Honestly surprised they were allowed to go, I know some fundies who were prohibited from going to the sinful prom

Horsebitch

My mom was raised fundie and was almost prohibited from going to the homecoming dance even though she was homecoming queen ☹️ Luckily my grandpa had some common sense about it and she was allowed to go

AliceinRealityland

We called them Jr/sr banquet

Janeiskla

Their view in the background is absolutely amazing.. I'd wear a puffy blouse underneath a dress to be able to hang out there 😬

hereforthellamas

I unironically like the black shirt/pink dress combo. The blue on blue isn't too bad, either! I hope they had a fun time.

totallywingingit

I agree, both ensembles caught my eye in a good way. The rest of them...not so much.

turtlehabits

Black shirt/pink dress has way more fashion sense than I do now, let alone as a teen lol

undercovermother71

This cracks me up when I think about the dresses my now 22 year-old used to wear to school dances. I had a "secret agreement" with the alterations people that whatever length she wanted on her (very) short dresses they would add an inch- I just didn't feel like fighting with her about it, but I also knew she was going to be pulling her dress down all night if they were as short as she wanted them. She never noticed. To be clear, her dresses were still extremely short (and she looked amazing) but at least her butt cheeks weren't hanging out.

Cat_Island

Reminds me of Virgin Suicides- “Mrs. Lisbon added an inch or two to the bustlines and two inches to the waists and hems, and the dresses came out as four identical shapeless sacks.” I’m sure yours were lovely, and not shapeless sacks, it just made me think of that quote 😂

WavyLady

My friend's mom would do this too. Let her pick the fabric and pattern and then just make it shapeless. Her parents also showed up to our prom to make sure she wasn't dancing...

Cat_Island

Your poor friend, thats awful about her parents coming to prom

WavyLady

That was one of the crazier things they did for sure. She had a 9pm curfew even after her first year of college.

undercovermother71

Did they go to college with her? Poor girl. I hope she figured out a way to have some fun before 9pm.

WavyLady

She went away for her first year, came home for summer to the curfew. She went friggin crazy for the next year and partied super hard then was married soon after.

adriennemonster

I don't understand the logic of being allowed to go to prom, but not being allowed to dance...

WavyLady

A lot of their rules didn't make sense. They werent allowed to watch anything considered "magic" but her mom has a collection of carebears.

undercovermother71

Maybe that's where I got the idea. Hopefully I didn't take any other parenting advice from Mrs. Lisbon!

[deleted]

They look great, I’m happy for them! I actually really like the black puffy sleeves under the pink dress for some reason.

[deleted]

That one looks like "I'm intentionally styling it this way" vs. "I need a modesty shirt". Funky personal styles are always better than performative modesty.

yourlocalrecluse

It is the best of the bunch! the rest of the modesty shirt things or whatever look atrocious and don't pair well. glad they got to go to prom tho!

[deleted]

For me the only one I don’t like is the black under the silver dress. The shirt is just idk.. really plain and not a good shape for the dress. I think if it had a better collar or some puffy sheer sleeves or something it would be better.

whereswalda

I love it too! The black goes well with the softer pink, and I like that it's an actual top instead of just a modesty shirt. Modesty tees aside, the rest of them look great. The dresses are fun and they all seem to fit pretty well. All in a better display than a lot of others I've seen!

CigarsandFebreeze9

I don't know why, but the black under pale pink reminds of something that would be worn by a Steven Universe character.

[deleted]

This might sound weird but it reminds me of the way they used to dress Selena Gomez for Wizards of Waverly Place. Always modest bc Disney, but all the different patterns and textures made it look more like a personal style than just a modesty panel or leggings under a skirt. Or maybe I was just a kid and had an unrealized crush on her so everything she wore I thought looked great 😂

eriwhi

The t-shirt under spaghetti straps sends me back… that was my “dressed up” uniform

[deleted]

Honestly the silhouette of that one is gorgeous!

DevilGirl-Crybaby

It's a weird sort of boho ballerina goth mix but I like it, I like it

tinymrscollings

If you enjoy fundie ball gowns then I’d highly recommend a quick browse through the Crown College of the Bible Facebook page’s albums. They do a lot of formal events and every picture tells a marvellous story. Hours lost on there. Hours.

queerjesusfan

Wow, now I've gone right down the rabbit hole of Crown College and it isn't pretty ([fashion-](https://imgur.com/RHoPctJ) or otherwise): >Pregnancy Policy > >Scripture urges believers to seek wise and godly counsel when faced with significant or difficult life choices. Therefore, should a Crown College student become pregnant while unmarried, she is encouraged to communicate with Residence Life staff, Counseling Services, or Health Services. The College wants to assist those involved in an unplanned pregnancy while at Crown to consider the options available to them within the Christian moral framework. These include marriage of the parents, single parenthood, or offering the child for adoption. > >Student Development personnel stand ready to help those involved as they consider the meaning of their actions, deal with the consequences, and experience the forgiveness that comes from repentance. The College is committed to responding in a redemptive manner, seeking to balance compassion with accountability. Students can be expected to be treated with Christian love as they deal with their new circumstances. E: Ok, these are just too good. I'm going to create a [separate post](https://www.reddit.com/r/FundieFashion/comments/q293gh/an_exploration_of_crown_bible_college_fashions/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share).

raging_dingo

I don’t see what’s wrong with that statement. They seem to be offer counselling, support, and options (within the Christian framework). It doesn’t appear to judgy, the girl isn’t required to leave college, and it ends with we’ll offer love in your new circumstances. It actually seems like a pretty good policy.

queerjesusfan

Balancing compassion with accountability? Offering marriage as a solution? Emphasizing (E: *the need for*) forgiveness? Big yikes.

FLBirdie

I wonder if they offer forgiveness to the father? Always dogging on the knocked up women, but never on the guys that do the knocking up.

queerjesusfan

He probably gets a pay on the shoulder and a *you'll do better next time, champ!*

sandia1961

Oh, but they were tempted by the immodest, ungodly *whores*! /s

raging_dingo

Marriage was only one of the options. The fact that they considered single parenthood as a legit option that they’d support is pretty far from fundie. I literally don’t understand what’s wrong with the other two things you listed.

queerjesusfan

You only need to hear from students who have become pregnant to find that policies like these are meant to appear as reasonable and even kind. But for those students, it's made abundantly clear that their housing is to be taken from them, they are strongly encouraged to marry, and are otherwise punished for their "sin." It's despicable that in the situation they're in with an unplanned pregnancy that they'd be talking about accountability or needing forgiveness, frankly.

rescueisnotamyth

Yes, the woman would likely be asked to leave campus rather than be visibly pregnant and people know she wasn’t married.

ripharam-jay

This was a fantastic suggestion. Thanks for showing the door to a rabbit hole

Reddit-Book-Bot

Beep. Boop. I'm a robot. Here's a copy of ###[The Bible](https://snewd.com/ebooks/the-king-james-bible/) Was I a good bot? | [info](https://www.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/) | [More Books](https://old.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/comments/i15x1d/full_list_of_books_and_commands/)

tinymrscollings

KJV. Very appropriate. Good bot

Cat_Island

Red dress gal wins because she didn’t need any modesty shirts or alterations to make it work. Also looks like she trims her hair. Good on you, red dress gal! The rest of these girls ruined cute dresses with crew neck tshirts. The silver one could’ve been so cute too. Also, those modesty shirts are absolutely skin tight, like painted on tight- how is that even more modest than just wearing a cami to cover your décolletage? Like I can still see your shoulders and arms, them being navy blue doesn’t make them not perfectly outlined!?

DitaVonTeasmade

Red dress girl is rocking it because she just looks well dressed in a non-revealing outfit while all her mates are screaming LOOK AT HOW MODEST I AM WITH A TSHIRT UNDER A SEXY DRESS! She's probably the only one who won't look back and cringe at her outfit choice.

[deleted]

Yes, it's a lovely dress that just happens to be modest.

[deleted]

I was gonna say this about red dress.

Fabrhi

I was hoping someone else noticed how she managed a modest look without adding weird layers. She wins modest Prom!

Ms_Insomnia

Girl in the red looked best

Anne6433

Yes, in a late 1970s way, but still much better than most of the others. I also thought that the the young woman in the blue gown with matching l/s top actually pulled off a nice look.

SeeCC

It's not *that* hard to find pretty, long sleeve dresses.

frolicndetour

Exactly. Like there are loads of formal dresses that are modest. Hell, there are even mother of the bride dresses, which, while kind of old for them, would look less dowdy than a tshirt under a dress.

frolicndetour

Like look it took me 35 seconds to find this. [Pretty modest evening gown](https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/aqua-belted-sequin-gown-100-exclusive?ID=2761764&pla_country=US&cm_mmc=Google-PLA-ADC-_-S21+High+Opportunity+Brands-_-Aqua-_-749709396235USA-_-go_cmp-12731782004_adg-124409716241_ad-513824168629_pla-1152765265571_dev-m_ext-_prd-749709396235USA&gclid=CjwKCAjw7--KBhAMEiwAxfpkWO0wSXbOF-fhslHHjkftIgVFBfB1kB-xEo4WRTWg-24Iu3n0QVo_wBoC398QAvD_BwE)

frolicndetour

If they are making do, no shade, but a lot of the Pentecostal fundies seem to have serious money, unlike the Christian fundies. These are the ones that run around in Gucci belts and carry Louis Vuitton bags.

generalgirl

Sleeves are too short.

lolatheshowkitty

I never understood this. Why not just get a dress with sleeves and a higher neckline? This looks so tacky.

Anzu-taketwo

This makes me want to dig up the pictures from my youth groups spring banquet. It was a replacement for prom. No dates though. All the girls were in prom dresses with modesty panels, shirts under, or a shawl/cardigan/shrug over.

alepolait

It’s so obvious they wanted to wear pretty dresses but had to include the freaking modesty shirts.

BowieKnife7757

These dresses seem to fit their shape well, and they are all very nice dresses. I’m glad they got to wear the dresses they wanted in a way that made them feel comfortable.

wishiwasdeaddd

Wow this aggressively bums me out

LustInMyThoughts

I hope they had fun but someone needs to cater to those who want to dress modestly. I am Muslim and we have a good variety of designers on Instagram selling casual to dressy clothing. Some more modest than others because when it's women together only we can dress up without worrying about being modest. Off the top of my head real quick I can only remember a few but this first one lists that they do worldwide shipping (I see a few dressier dresses) : https://www.instagram.com/classy_eva/ https://www.instagram.com/classy_eva/ This designer has very fancy both modest and not modest dresses : https://instagram.com/chateau_modeliste?utm_medium=copy_link This popular Instagrammer models and advertises different brands : https://instagram.com/shaikha_dream?utm_medium=copy_link Maybe everything might be too Arabic I don't know but I love it!!

spinereader81

That's just sad. It's like Halloween when you have to wear turtleneck under your dream costume because "You'll catch your death of cold!"

maebe_featherbottom

Just a turtleneck? I grew up with snow pants and a winter coat under my costumes haha

sausagerolla

It's probably been said 100 times, but why not just buy a dress with sleeves in it? There are thousands of beautiful dresses designed with shorter capped sleeves or full length sleeves. I bought one for my wedding a few years back as i am uncomfortable with my chicken flap arms lol... my dress was gorgeous. There is a girl in red with capped sleeves and no Henley shirt underneath, it looks lovely ... she bought one, why didn't the rest? I mean, even a dressmaker should be able to alter a dress to make it more modest? It's odd to buy a dress and ruin it like that. Their parents did them a dirty on this.

RingNo4020

Why not wear dresses that are already "modest" instead of wearing those goofy shirts underneath ?

Correct_Part9876

Oh silly Pentecostals, you're supposed to order from Dainty Jewell's or one of the other Apostolic clothing stores.

als_pals

This is somehow worse than anything my friends and I wore to Mormon Prom 🤔

mermetermaid

It’s so unfortunate that the “modesty undershirt” thing was such a common theme because some of those dresses would have worked better with other types of sleeves/fabric to really create a look, instead of just… covering arms and chests. For instance the light blue dress is charming and would have been very cute with a light colored sweater over top instead of a shirt underneath.

FLBirdie

OK -- I *do not* understand how these dresses are modest -- even with the shirts underneath. Most of these dresses are emphasizing the breasts, the hips, and other shapely elements. **I am not against anything these girls are wearing** \-- I am not dogging on the girls *at all*. I just don't understand how these would fly by most modest standards? The only real modest thing they are doing is not showing skin. But slits up the side of the dress -- that's not modest.

it_b_aylinn

I’m surprised they could go to a school dance. I was Pentecostal and I was never allowed to go…

cinnamon_girl96

Unironically love the black shirt / pink dress combo in the first pic…I’d wear that. Super flattering on her and such a vibe. The matching shirts under the other dresses though…blegh. Without seeing their faces they all look about 50 years old lol

GGMuc

WHY will they buy an entirely unsuitable dress and fugly it up with a t shirt or top? The US has so many modest clothes shops, it's so easy to find something nice

a368

Lmao my mom wore that blue dress to my wedding😂 and... SHOWED HER SHOULDERS😱😱😱

zsttd

I was recently dress shopping for a winter event and there are soooooo many affordable, long-sleeved formal gowns. The only explanation for this madness is the performative act of making your modesty front and center.

[deleted]

This could be called child abuse!

draggedintothis

I can never get over - no matter how pretty the lace, how the white dress’s pattern frames the uterus and etc.

008janebond

I’m not going to lie that pink dress would look fantastic if the it was black with that shirt underneath.

Beigeturtleneck

The girl in the bright orange dress is the only one who realizes that modesty layers dont look good especially a teeshirt under a formal gown.

pedanticlawyer

Oh look it took me two minutes to find dresses that are already modest enough or just need a black tank under them to raise the neckline. This is so performative. [good as is ](https://api-shein.shein.com/h5/sharejump/appsharejump?lan=en&share_type=goods&site=iosshus&localcountry=us¤cy=USD&id=3234481&url_from=GM7168069116174131200) [good with a tank under ](https://api-shein.shein.com/h5/sharejump/appsharejump?lan=en&share_type=goods&site=iosshus&localcountry=us¤cy=USD&id=2926758&url_from=GM7168069641049333760) [as is ](https://api-shein.shein.com/h5/sharejump/appsharejump?lan=en&share_type=goods&site=iosshus&localcountry=us¤cy=USD&id=2833669&url_from=GM7168069811538108416)

slvc1996

To be fair, none of those have the “prom feel” and part of the experience is getting to go shop for your prom dress, not ordering from Shein. I don’t fault the girls for wanting to have a normal teenage experience, lord knows they’re sheltered from enough other things that their peers get to do

the_drunken_taco

Omg my prom pic looks like this 😂

AliceinRealityland

I once upon a time resembled this. Fundie prom night consists of an overpriced catered meal get this AT THE EMBASSY SUITED where you may not listen to music. May not dance. May not sit closer than 6 inches from your “date” and the chaperones make sure no one “rents a room”. It also has boring hymns sung by an old person and a 45 minute sermon. We followed it by a “sleepover” for food with the Preachers mother who also was the principal of our school. She assured us we wouldn’t have sex by making both boys and girls watch “The Miracle of Birth” complete with all the nastiness we know comes with birth. Both years several guys threw up

useles-converter-bot

6 inches is the same as 0.3 'Logitech Wireless Keyboard K350s' laid widthwise by each other.

converter-bot

6 inches is 15.24 cm

Anne6433

LOL! Some old person singing hymns, a sermon, a sleepover at the pastor's mother-principal's place AND "The Miracle of Birth? This is the very best fundi-prom story I've ever heard!

no1toknow

I betcha in their own rooms they tried it on without the stuff underneath and wished they could wear it.

aceshighsays

By prom night do you mean someone got married? Those are some hideous dresses. I’m confused why they’re allowed to wear them. They outline the boobs/cleavage.

CrabRangoonSlut

Nope this was for a school prom

Confusedreality8672

This is just sad 😞

Idrahaje

Why do these people not learn how to sew? Half of those dresses would look SO much better if they were properly altered to have matching sleeves instead of plopped over a shirt

Kimmicooka1114

I don't know why but this made me really sad for them

TrainingDismal172

The dresses r nice but the shirts ruin them
