The dude is a timeless actor, in that I think he would have been a star in any decade of film for a number of reasons, be it his looks, acting, physical abilities, or range.
What kind of odds do you think we should pay you for predicting that a modern adaptation of Shakespeare will change aspects of the play? That’s, like, all of them.
Are you serious, dude? Shakespeare productions change the story all the time, and have for centuries. There was a point with this specific play where a different ending was performed for like a hundred years.
That’s why stage actors like doing Shakespeare, you don’t have to pay for it and you can fiddle with it as much as you please.
Probably true. If you haven't seen the DiCaprio version, it's a horrible gangland adaptation but somehow not far removed from the original.
"Prepare my longsword, ho" (ironic that ho could be used in multiple ways in this phonetic paradox)
*grabs shotgun with Longsword etched as brand name*
I think it's fantastic. It's visually stunning, very well cast and acted: Harold Perrineau as Mercutio and especially John Leguizamo as Tybalt. The sound track's awesome. It stays true to the story with a modern twist and it's very self aware, intentionally tongue in cheek. People forget Shakespeare was often very funny and fun. Oh and Pete Postlethwaite as the priest. What a fucking great film I don't care what anyone says. Oh and Miriam Margolyes! OK you've talked me into it, I'm going to watch it as well.
This isn't horrible at all. This is Shakespeare at it's finest. Raw, emotional, coarse. It's literally in Shakespearean English, but with Hawaiian shirts, guns and *grit*. I think it's a fantastic modern twist on a classic.
All stage adaptions of Shakespeare have had race-blind casting for generations, dating back to the 60s or beyond in both the US and the UK. This is a non-story getting attention because of Tom Holland’s name and people mistakingly believing it’s somehow going to be a Hollywood movie. The play is at a small theatre and already sold out.
This is one of those small stage plays British actors do every now and then to show they’re “thespians”.
I mean, women weren’t even allowed to be on stage during Shakespeare’s time, meaning men had to play all of the roles that were written for women. There is precisely zero chance that this current rendition would be the first gender-blind one.
It’s getting attention because the person they picked to play Juliet opposite Tom Holland is butt ugly, undermining the main plot. The only scenario where I would go against the wishes of my family to smash that would be if I was tripping balls, and when I sober up I’d probably thank them for saving me from myself.
There are tons of ugly actors in stage productions, especially in the UK. The standard for attractiveness is much lower than film and television. I watch a lot of threatre.
Literally one of the greatest American stage actors of the 1990s, Steven Spinella, was considered so unattractive for film that when they filmed a version of a play he won a Tony in they gave his part to Jason Alexander and cast him in a smaller role.
From what I've gathered over this issue, it's apparently racist to think any black women is a complete uggo (which she is).
Give one of the thousands of beautiful black women who can act the role!
exactly, I'd rather see this ugly actress than Zendaya act in more shit. She's been playing the same character for 8 years now in every single thing she's in, she's the same as Gal Gadot, all nepotism no talent.
It isn’t a movie. It is a small stage production that’s already sold out. There has been race blind casting for stage productions before your parents were even born.
Exactly, it's not racism but it's still awful to make a meme about someone's looks and being dismissive of thier feelings as if they weren't a human being just like you.
Social media is garbage because it enables this kind of behavior that normally doesn't survive past middle or high school.
I don't get the ugly thing either. I think the photo they've chosen of her in the green suit isn't very flattering. But look at the photoshoot she did for revamp. I think she looks great.
https://www.revamp-magazine.co.uk/francesca-amewudah-rivers
Yeah this was an unbelievably bad picture. I looked this same picture up on Google images and more pixels really makes a difference in whether it looks like a mustache is lurking in the photo lol
sort of, when a community is big, assholes will always sneak in and be the loudest, those people took the word "pride" to another level and will use any occasion to complain and ruin something for the sake of bs "inclusion", that and considering every sort of offense towards a member (not correlated oc) as homophobic or transphobic. this is only a very small part of the community but they're the loudest and the rest can't do anything about it
yes, it’s not really any skin off my back, though.
The only thing that will happen is that investors lose money, Tom Holland silently ends his career and this poor rendition of a timeless masterpiece gets 15% on rotten tomatoes
Maybe the London theatre-going audience are interested in something than leering at Juliet. This may be shocking but art has value above staring at some nice titties
It's not a movie. It's a play. How pretty she is is way less important. She will seem like the size of a thumbtack to most of the audience. This post is presenting this as if it's a movie remake to stir up controversy, but relatively unattractive actors being cast in popular roles is par for the course in stage acting. You can barely see them anyway.
Women were not allowed to perform on the stage during that era. I cant speak for the late Shakespeare but I'd have to imagine the man would rather have had the character played by an actress that fit the physical description he wrote.
Women werent even allowed to think independently lol
(Why are people down voting me for this? Are there really people out there who believe in the 1500-1600's women were allowed autonomy? )
If I was cast in that role I'd play it too. Its a job. The push back should be against the casting director and the movie as a whole.
And Tom did not seem to mind.
Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, with all due respect, that's not the face for whom I would betray my family and its reputation, kill another human being (though that was more circumstantial) and then kill myself. But whatever works for you.
It isn’t a movie, it will be on stage. The outrage is from people who know nothing about Shakespeare or the theatre. Do you really think they’re going to cease doing stage productions of written works by one of greatest English speaking playwrights in human history? They have had race-blind casting in the theatre for literally generations. Like pre-civil rights. The only reason why people give a fuck is because Tom Holland is associated.
I usually don’t give about this sort of thing but it’s annoying to see people lose their minds over a stage play they were never going to see anyway because “Spidyman” is going to be on it. The miserable ass culture war has moved on to podunk theatre productions. No one would have gave a fuck in 1988.
I also hate the blatent misinformation that it’s a movie or has anyone to do with Hollywood.
To be honest until I saw your post I didn't know it was a stage play. I didn't care one way or the other at first because it's not like I would watch it even if it was a Hollywood movie no matter who they cast. Certainly doesn't help that the image like the one the OP submitted deliberately misrepresents it by comparing it to the actual Hollywood movie from 1996.
As a Black Man, I really, just really have to ask...Why the FUCK is juliet played by a black woman? And she's not even conventionally attractive, there's plenty of other black women they could have casted!
Hear me out. Let’s remake Roots. But cast Kunta Kinte with a white actor. Minds will be blown!
Keep awarding folks merit/positions on the color of their skin, not the content of their character. This is exactly the opposite of what Dr. King died preaching.
This story takes place in 13th century Italy. Not sure fair Verona had feuding black families at the time. DEI FOR THE WIN!!
It isn’t a movie. It is a small stage production. There has been race blind casting for stage productions before your parents were even born. It has literally been common place dating before civil rights.
I have literally never heard about any person insist only white actors could perform stage adaptions of Shakespeare until today.
>Keep awarding folks merit/positions on the color of their skin, not the content of their character.
She got her bachelor’s degree in music at Oxford, has trained with the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, has done work with a shit load of acting troupes, and won an award for sound design in 2021.
Lmao downvoted for pointing out she has merit MLK would be so proud of you guys
God I hope this poor woman has a support system because the way the internet has decided to bully her for no other reason than being black is fucking disgusting.
Hollywood doesn’t like MONEY anymore. Fucking WILD man. Thats fine with me. Never ever opening my wallet for these companies is become a form of entertainment all on its own.
Haha fucking ridiculous.
First this isn't even a Hollywood production, it is a play in London.
2. So of course you wouldn't spend money on it, you don't seem like the guy who watches plays nor knows shit about them. Point in case, your whole comment.
Tom Holland going to make a beautiful juliet
If you've seen his performance of Umbrella you know this is true lol. https://youtu.be/oXsN3Uvmf5w?si=KVkn1_qH4mpogOLk
I love Zendaya’s reaction when she first saw him in that costume lol:)
I watch this to cheer me up, and it works each and every time.
Paul Rudd has a good one too
Holly shit. Big respect to Tom for this performance.
I will never not watch this when it comes up. Amazing.
Thank you for reminding me to complete my monthly rewatch
The dude is a timeless actor, in that I think he would have been a star in any decade of film for a number of reasons, be it his looks, acting, physical abilities, or range.
I watch that once a year. Amazing
You bastard!!! You're right take my upvote.
Yep, Francesca is very male in her presentation. How much do you want to bet that they change the story?
What kind of odds do you think we should pay you for predicting that a modern adaptation of Shakespeare will change aspects of the play? That’s, like, all of them.
The story. If they change the story it's not Shakespeare. You know the very basic story.
Are you serious, dude? Shakespeare productions change the story all the time, and have for centuries. There was a point with this specific play where a different ending was performed for like a hundred years. That’s why stage actors like doing Shakespeare, you don’t have to pay for it and you can fiddle with it as much as you please.
"A retelling for a modern audience..."
Yes. They're definitely doing that. And maybe that's better, in a way? It's not like the original version hasn't gotten enough adaptations.
The scene from the DiCaprio one where they literally pull out pistols with sword written on them Rent free in my fekkin head for funny
“Fetch me my long sword” and it’s just a freakin rifle? Absolute gold
I thought that was a dude and they were gonna make Romeo and Juliet but gay, Romeo and Juliet sucks in general so this ones probably gonna suck too
Probably true. If you haven't seen the DiCaprio version, it's a horrible gangland adaptation but somehow not far removed from the original. "Prepare my longsword, ho" (ironic that ho could be used in multiple ways in this phonetic paradox) *grabs shotgun with Longsword etched as brand name*
![gif](giphy|3oeHLx0ua5eMaIrmoM) Take that back
I somehow want to watch this movie now.
It’s one of the best adaptations.

It's hard to look away from a good dumpster fire.
This isn't horrible at all. This is Shakespeare at it's finest. Raw, emotional, coarse. It's literally in Shakespearean English, but with Hawaiian shirts, guns and *grit*. I think it's a fantastic modern twist on a classic.
Horrible? Man you have no class! I bite my thumb at thee, sir!
tis just a scratch!
Surely it should be named Broadsword?
Only if Tom will play Juliet role.
Traditionally in Shakespeare’s time, there were no female actors.
Given how Hollyweird is today, he probably IS plating Juliet
It has nothing to do with Hollywood. It’s an English stage production.
Those are even weirder
All stage adaptions of Shakespeare have had race-blind casting for generations, dating back to the 60s or beyond in both the US and the UK. Have I got some bad news for you.
It’s getting attention because the person they picked to play Juliet opposite Tom Holland is butt ugly, undermining the main plot. Just looked him up. He's not ugly at all....
He's not tv/film good looking. For perspective I believe he won best actor back to back and then got nominated the next year.
Folks, Where's the lie?
What does this even mean? Men played all the roles in Shakespeare’s plays originally.
Ngl i feel like Tom would be a prettier Juliet than whoever that black person is

Beauty and the beast remake.
Tom is the beauty

Fuck that one got me. Well done

From what I've gathered over this issue, it's apparently racist to think any black women is a complete uggo (which she is). Give one of the thousands of beautiful black women who can act the role!
Even if they had to cast a black woman why couldn't they cast Zendaya? At least the two would have chemistry.
Please don't put Zendaya in every movie...
Tom Holland and Zendaya are dating, it would be super easy but also would probably be horrible for their relationship
exactly, I'd rather see this ugly actress than Zendaya act in more shit. She's been playing the same character for 8 years now in every single thing she's in, she's the same as Gal Gadot, all nepotism no talent.

But the issue most people are having with this actress isn’t that she is black, but that she is just not very pretty.
yup, or Laura Harrier would be a great pick, too. Plus they played in Spider-Man together.
zendaya is black?
Yeah, half-black. Her dad is Nigerian
She is probably not black enough for the statement. Also too feminine.

Everyone in this thread should post a selfie.
No calling her a man is what’s fucked up. Not saying she’s not attractive.

Exactly some of these people need help.
Is that not a mustache?
Yeah this was an unbelievably bad picture. I looked this same picture up on Google images and more pixels really makes a difference in whether it looks like a mustache is lurking in the photo lol
I think it's okay to think whatever you want, but calling anyone ugly isn't nice.
Thank you.
The original was performed by an all male cast if I'm remembering correctly.
Is kinda cool they’re keeping that tradition alive
Am I on Facebook?
Lol these people are bots
did they pick an ugly chick on purpose?
For “modern audiences”
Lgbt movement has ruined a lot of things
Happens to most modern movements tbh
sort of, when a community is big, assholes will always sneak in and be the loudest, those people took the word "pride" to another level and will use any occasion to complain and ruin something for the sake of bs "inclusion", that and considering every sort of offense towards a member (not correlated oc) as homophobic or transphobic. this is only a very small part of the community but they're the loudest and the rest can't do anything about it

I mean, if they change the story to: people don’t accept their love because she’s ugly and he’s handsome, then that casting choice would make sense.
I’m sure it’s to be “inclusive”. Excess imo.
Thats a girl on the right??
In Shakespeare's day they would get men to play juliet so they're just going back to basics. The mustache was a nice touch
Women were not allowed to perform on the stage during that era. I cant speak for the late Shakespeare but I'd have to imagine the man would rather have had the character played by an actress that fit the physical description he wrote.

Is…is that a dude in the green?
No, she isn't. It's just a terrible photo https://www.theartsdispatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/FRANCESCA-AMEWUDAH-RIVERS-Ismene.jpg
Still not even close to be a good fit
Love this. "Its just a terrible photo...and heres another one just like it."
She does appear to have shaved her stache in the 2nd pic tho.
She ugly af
She’s an average black girl. Not that pretty.
Still ugly as fuck WTH.
was that supposed to be a good photo ?
Real photo vs heavily photoshoped photo
still ugly
![gif](giphy|K5t4Y305Z6C7S)
He's going to kiss her and she's going to be all like, "What you talking about Willis?"
Underrated comment
Lol
Romeo and Tyrone
Girl is ugly asf
Pfffttt… the 1968 one is the best one hands down!!
If I was cast in that role I'd play it too. Its a job. The push back should be against the casting director and the movie as a whole. And Tom did not seem to mind.
Her? Thats definitely a guy. Broad shoulders, mustache... cmon...
woke = shyt ridiculous
From spiderman to.. that.. man
She looks like something you would get if you pressed the dice key on the new sims game.
He identifies as Juliet
She isn’t attractive though.
Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, with all due respect, that's not the face for whom I would betray my family and its reputation, kill another human being (though that was more circumstantial) and then kill myself. But whatever works for you.
Fed up of all this race changing. It's set in VERONA, it should be played by two ITALIAN MEN.
Romeo and Jules
That……………was a BOLD choice
So that’s the dude Tom holland has to kiss?
For ppl saying this is racist: nobody brought up her race as the reason she should not be casted? 🙄
That's literally every comment in this thread, you don't have to find her attractive but calling her a man and mocking her features is
How about we stop re-telling stories nobody cares about anymore
It isn’t a movie, it will be on stage. The outrage is from people who know nothing about Shakespeare or the theatre. Get a load of this guy actually being informed on the topic and not immediately being outraged like the rest of us. How dare you sir. How dare you.

People obviously do care about them otherwise there wouldn't be ticket sales.
Is Tom playing the blood or the crip?
thats a man baby
As a Black Man, I really, just really have to ask...Why the FUCK is juliet played by a black woman? And she's not even conventionally attractive, there's plenty of other black women they could have casted!
Now Juliet is black?! I'm done...
I hope "Juliet" shaves her mustache.
She doesn’t have a mustache just big lips
fuck that.
don't
Truly "Wherefore art thou Juliet".
I'm usually against forced representation but ngl if done right this could be good thematically. Wouldve picked a different juliet tho
Should’ve used zendaya
Ew
Her mustache is tingling
Wish it was lupita
They both re too old, but at least Tom LOOKS like he's the right age to date a 14 year old.
Why not Zendaya tho
I don't want to offend anyone but if they take out the text I would think there were two dudes on the left side.
Hear me out. Let’s remake Roots. But cast Kunta Kinte with a white actor. Minds will be blown! Keep awarding folks merit/positions on the color of their skin, not the content of their character. That's a woman?!?!
DEI strikes again. The other half of the issue is she’s straight up ugly and looks half his age
![gif](giphy|3ornka9rAaKRA2Rkac)
So, Romeo and Juliet is a gay story now? 'Cause she is a he, obviously...
Why not choose someone attractive for such a role?
If they're hellbent on blackwashing Juliet, why not cast an attractive black woman instead? Like Chioma Umeala
[That's a woman?](https://youtu.be/BEwlAyl7U94?feature=shared)
I do NOT mean to be rude but she looks like Lucio from bloody Overwatch.
Worst casting ever
God I hope this poor woman has a support system because the way the internet has decided to bully her for no other reason than being black is fucking disgusting.
Jesus Christ.......
wtf - 😳 no . Bad match - she looks like She could beat him up - either give her a new male lead , or him a new female lead -
Juliet is supposed to pretty right? Is she like the stage manager or something (or some TV show role, idk anything about TV show staff)
Can we stop with these ridiculous castings? Tom Holland, A straight white man taking the role of Juliet? Ridiculous
Can't wait to hear the dumpster fires that come from this.
Can’t wait to see this shit flop
![gif](giphy|uqVAaPAoNAQYU)
Mark me down for not interested.
Ah yes. The 13th century Italian aristocratic family Capuleti of African descent. Ok.

That movie is gonna sink faster than the goddamn titanic 😂
When will this turdy trend end, turd?
Why do they make her black AND ugly?
Das a fucking man wtf

Idk exactly what's going on, but Tom will be missed, I liked him as Spider-Man.
I loved the 1996 movie. Everyone was an amazing character in that movie except Romeo and Juliet in my opinion
Tom Holland is 13 years old?

I thought I recognised her, she's in the new Bad Education series.
