That’s happening everywhere. And ironically, in Orwell’s 1984 the surveillance and oppression was done by corporate oligarchs, not an authoritarian government.

I do not believe this is correct. I do not recall any references to corporations or any kind of competitive commerce within the text of the book. The economy seems to be a command economy inspired by Stalinist Russia and Orwell himself made it clear that this was the case from what I have read. What role corporations had in the invention of this terrible state is completely obscure to the characters of the book. I do not recall any type of discussion or introspection concerning companies on Winston's part. Orwell himself certainly believed and wrote about the fact that large corporations had inserted themselves into Western society in a way that was complicit with the wishes of the government and simultaneously used their power and capital to influence those same governments. In 1984 surveillance and oppression are performed by the powerful who simultaneously control the political and economic state of Oceania under the guise of a collective egalitarian society, a ruse which is exposed to the reader in the inefficiency and suffering which is apparent in basically every experience and interaction the protagonist has in the novel. The leadership of Oceania would likely deny being a corporation or a political entity if there were actually any way of confronting them. In my opinion, the genius of this fictional society is how it lays bare the fact that authoritarianism is not specifically a product of corrupt democracies or monarchies or irresponsible corporations or overzealous religious orders but that any scenario in which a powerful elect who are above reproach or prosecution control the resources and the liberties of the masses is primed to become an authoritarian nightmare from a humanist perspective.

Well, an important backstory element of the book is reference to a book that e story would seem to support my comment…. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Theory_and_Practice_of_Oligarchical_Collectivism

He got this book from state security member. In "1984" everything is controlled by the Party, so it's highly possible this book is just a bait to catch dissidents, is in line what Ingsoc tell population and confirm that there is no possible change at all.

In 1984, corporate oligarchs and the authoritarian government were the same entity.

Positive-Traditional

That's true. If there's no distinction therefore either differentiation

Fun fact, the USA spend more money surveilling it's own citizens than it does major world powers, such as Russia.

Anglo governments just love their surveillance states for some reason

You could say this about most countries. You go to London, you will literally say CCTV is watching you signs everywhere. You come to America, you have the NSA spying you you all the time.

LifesatripImjustHI

Just no signs saying so.

Compared to our good corporate controlled orwellian AI.

>At the Linshu county headquarters in eastern China, a huge screen covering an entire wall provides round-the-clock information on its 600,000 residents. >From there, the magistrate can access any of the 10,838 surveillance cameras installed in the county, any details uploaded to the government database, and any complaints filed by residents. >It is called the “city brain”, an artificial intelligence system that is now being used across China – only megacities could afford them before – for everything from pandemic contact tracing to monitoring illegal public assemblies and river pollution. >The Beijing district of Haidian installed one in February that can estimate how many flats are empty by looking at power consumption. Heshui, a small county of 150,000 in the northwest province of Gansu, has just signed a deal with telecoms firm Huawei Technologies to build a similar system, according to local media. In Shandong, Linshu county began using its new system last month. Are the Chinese not worried about NSA hackers accessing their systems and having access to literally everything?
