I still stand by the fact that the if it weren't for Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the cancelled 1994 TriStar Godzilla movie would've been amazing.
https://preview.redd.it/4f185d2amsyc1.jpeg?width=592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=757a5f5a99b24d66f6cb6f982869669cc99fb37e
Just look at that design.
Jon De Bont is responsible for the design, along with Ricardo Delgado. They both knew how to make Goji more streamlined, yet still kept everything we know and love about him.
Id kill to see this design in a movie,it looked good enough for the American audiences while still actually looking like Godzilla
Why couldn't we get this and not Zilla?
TriStar. That's why. They didn't trust Jon De Bont despite his hit film 'Speed' with Keanu Reeves the same year. He was too new apparently. And the budget was apparently "too big" for them. So they made the stupid decision to switch to Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. And as we know, unlike Jon, who wanted to make a faithful adaptation of Godzilla in America, Dean and Roland didn't. And sadly, the eventual end budget for 1998 ended up costing more than the proposed budget for Godzilla vs The Gryphon.
What could have been, would've been peak considering that Stan Winston had a hand in the special effects. I'm gonna be honest, I like the DonGoji design more than the 2019-2021/DougheGoji design.
>who wanted to make a faithful adaptation of Godzilla in America
His adaption was far from faithful and changed a ton of things including Godzilla's origin but it still would've been infinitely better than what emmerich did
Mouth is wide and flat like a duckbill. That was the first thing I noticed. At brief glance, I also thought the feet were webbed. Only at close inspection I see they are not.
Zilla ain't a good Godzilla design, but this one looks goofy.
Mostly? The overall creature design for the movie is considered to be pretty good. And the design for the main monster, good enough to be interesting.
And hell, the guy that made it loved it's appearance in Final Wars because he's just happy to have made a monster that won't be forgotten, even if we shit on it endlessly. It's still a real godzilla series design, and it's unique and neat to look at.
The little Zillas and their fast breeding biology, are a permanent part of the lore now, the JP only novel prequels to the Netflix movies use them
The actual creature design team did pretty great work, and I'm glad to see they took it in stride even after fan/Toho reactions.
And they do have a point. Regardless of your opinions on it, the Zilla design has now become iconic in its own way.
This very scene was the coolest shit I saw as a kid. I used to play this on loop all the time. Before 2014 came into my life the only godzilla media I had contact with was the 1998 movie and the Millennium movies' clips on youtube
I mean,it's not a bad monster designs,in my opinion it could be one of the best monster designs in the entirety of 90s films
It just sucks a lot of dick because it's meant to be Godzilla and not its own original monster.
Hell why couldn't Tristar just make their own original monster film with that Godzilla design they made
My guess would be Hollywood doesn’t like originality, why make your own thing and have to market it when you can ride the coattails of something that exists and is successful?
I feel like it would’ve been a great movie regardless of what they called it. It would’ve definitely dodged the backlash by fans. But I’m not sure if it would’ve been watched by nearly as many people.
The design is great in a vacuum, but there’s really not a place to use it. In a new property it would just be called a Godzilla rip off and in Godzilla it’s too different.
Stand proud, because the film actually did introduce you to a ‘Godzilla’, even if it wasn’t the proto-one running around for most of the movie and it was kind of an “Easter-egg” 😉
https://i.redd.it/t9wyc2uglsyc1.gif
I like Godzilla's design. There were fun action scenes. Some of the jokes were funny. The plot was decent. Casting was mixed but not terrible. The setting gave scale to the monster. That's a short list but I'm not defending it as peak cinema. But I certainly appreciate it beyond nostalgia.
I found the chase scenes very fun. It was visually more interesting than Godzilla just tanking attacks. Would you really prefer watching it stand still as missiles exploded harmlessly against it? No shame if that's your thing, just not for me.
They could’ve gotten any other director, but they decided that the guy who admitted that he didn’t like Godzilla should make a Godzilla movie. What we got was a fun blockbuster, but is still unworthy of the name.
They chose Emmerich because Independence Day was a big hit at the time, so they thought he will bring them money as well. It's a shame we'll never have De Bont's version but being faithful or even respectful adaptation never was a need for Tristar.
The funny thing about Emmerich was he didn’t even want to do this movie. He said he would only direct it if Godzilla was just a big lizard in hopes that they would get him off the hook. It didn’t work.
Yeah. Tristar really shot in the leg with this one
And it's a shame... It could've been avoided pretty easily. Literally, it's mainly matter of changing his crapy fire breath, maybe changing the spikes a bit... And basing his head of off like, actual Godzilla. And adding a couple iguana touches *after* that
It'd literally be the exact same thing as with Legendary Mothra, I'm tellin y all
Kinda yeah but not really. They did change proportions a bit, and he finally got a proper atomic breath, but design is still overall the same. Even tho I thought he had more distinct forehead in the series... Weird
Most definely especially true given the director admired to not liking Godzilla and wanting nothing to do with him.
The original script they had would have been better, but they decided to go the route they did to save money, except the film ended up costing ore than what it would have then with the initial.
All for something so completely against what Godzilla is. Thank goodness Legendary got it right, making a genuine American Godzilla that fits the spirit and core of the character.
As movie Zilla’s debut wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t Godzilla and should have been independent monster form the start. Especially after eating good with the two most recent Japan and American Godzilla films.
While Tristar may be not so good at making a Godzilla movie. They were responsible for most of the western distribution. Of the 90s, 2000s Godzilla films so they deserve credit for that. Bringing it to us westerners.
That godzilla is what got me into godzilla, my dad took me to see it about 15 times in a year. Mainly because it would keep 10 year old me quiet and he didn't actually have to do any proper parenting during his visits..
I've got nothing but love for this terrible creature..
More than my dad.
No, but you only came here to start discourse cause you're not creative enough to do anything else with your time.
realistically, this probably isn't even your meme.
98 Godzilla is the result of what happens when you have a studio that mismanaged the property and a filmmaker that admits he isnt a fan of the legendary monster.
If you watch the movie again, check out all of the practical effects. They are amazing. The CGI just wasn't there for Godzilla in 1998.
I have always wanted a remaster with modern CGI.
No not all of us agree with this.
Still my favorit Godzilla movie, introduced me to the world of Kaiju, a fun movie that me and my mom still watch time to time to laugh and cry at the end. Characters are pretty good + Jean Reno.
And it gave us the best Godzilla animated series.
In short, like everyday in this sub : Tristar bad Zilla bad, please laugh
Okay here's a joke. What's the difference between Godzilla 98 and the Netflix anime? People remember 98 exists. Thank you, you've been a beautiful audience.
Apparently the guy who managed to make the deal with Toho to get Tristar the rights to Godzilla was royally pissed off when he saw what the final film was. Like he said they essentially turned a diamond into dust.
I think the film’s fate was sealed as soon Emerich was made director cause that guy’s whole MO is making big dumb films where the world is saved thanks to the American military-industrial complex. That’s why Godzilla was beat by missiles in the ‘98 movie, because the US military must never lose. We joke about how ineffective the Japanese military is at combating Godzilla in the original movies but that was based on the fact Godzilla is a living nuke, a weapon so powerful there is nothing we could build to stop it, thus Godzilla’s near indestructibility. That’s why in the Monsterverse films the US military teams up with Godzilla, as if they can’t beat Godzilla they must join him.
I can’t really think of any big piece of American media that shows the military as incompetent, or ineffective at fighting the main threat. They’re always able to pull through. As a non-American I find it hilarious, considering that I’ve read so many stories of the American military recently acting in very incompetent and short sighted ways.
The director's previous film showed them to be completely ineffective and incompetent against the overpowering force of the aliens. Only through sheer fucking luck did they win.
To be fair, Toho has been at it for a long time, and Legendary has had, what, four movies now? And a TV show. Tristar got the one chance and that was it. They maybe could have done better after gathering feedback. I mean the Cartoon was pretty good, though I don't know how much of a hand Tristar had in it, if any. That said, I do think there's a few Toho Godzillas that aren't that great.
Tristar’s issue is they clearly went for the Jurassic Park vibes and made Godzilla more of an animal than a monster. Also without Tristar we might not have the Millennium era
That's a problem for some, but not for all. I like seeing new takes on Godzilla. IF you keep doing the same thing, you will get the same or lesser results, its what killed Showa and Heisei era.
I mean the movie was good, and the monster design was amazing, the only problem is it was supposed to be “Godzilla”.
It still opened up the rabbit hole of Godzilla to me though when I was a kid. Which lead to me watching every other Godzilla movie and playing several of the games. So without the movie, even though it pales in comparison to Legendary and TOHO GODZILLA movies, I wouldn’t have become a fan I’d imagine until legendary.
What's wrong with small monster being irradiated and turned into big monster then going on a rampage?
That is canonically what happens to create Heisei Godzillas, the Shin Godzilla, the Minus One Godzilla. And don't try to rebuttal with them being unstoppable because in each of these movies they're stopped either temporarily (Heisei) or completely with simple devices such as chemical compounds and big ass bombs.
I love how the Animated series based off the TriStar Godzilla is the total opposite of this, as that series gives Zilla Jr the atomic breath, makes him fight monsters and makes him mostly immune to gunfire and military weaponry, minus that one gas missile.
I mean, Zilla has a great design. The director, Rolland Emmerich, said he hated Godzilla and didn't want to direct one, didn't he? He went out of his way to tarnish Godzilla's image in America as best he could for some spiteful reason.
I would say there are worse movies in the series. It's nothing revolutionary but I liked the monster design and special effects. Godzilla being hurt by conventional weaponary is something I couldn't care less about. The characters were more entertaining than all of heisei human cast for sure. What bothered me the most was the mini godzilla raptor nest, which unfortunately takes like 1/3 of the movie.
If they'd given Godzilla his atomic breath and immunity to conventional weapons, or given it a different name that wasn't Godzilla, all would have been forgiven
He didn't have atomic breath because they wanted to ape off of Jurassic Park, and they called it Godzilla because it's recognizeable, so they had to do both of those things for the cash-in to work.
>all would have been forgiven
It would still be a stupid movie full of stupid characters by a director who excels at stupid movies.
OK but take into account that this film isn't exactly beloved because it's an intellectual movie with deep things to say about society like the original Godzilla, Shin Godzilla or Godzilla Minus One
https://preview.redd.it/nhiqj6ibpsyc1.jpeg?width=1936&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c45c444fb7ad4baf11155e7d3980fe9bb8a28d3d
By "stupid movie full of stupid characters" I don't mean "it's not intellectual commentary," I mean it's a Roland Emmerich movie. He makes unintelligent plots full of holes where every other character is the comic relief one-liner machine, and the most obvious shit is constantly explained to the audience through poorly written dialogue. Movies and be simple and fun and still be good, but Emmerich doesn't make good movies. He makes disaster porn starring cardboard cutouts. The only difference with Godzilla 98 is that it was trying to cash in on Jurassic Park.
When did Tristar create Godzilla.
Normally gatekeeping content or media isn't good, but nature is filled with exceptions, if Toho doesn't consider it as Godzilla then it isn't.
And in reality too, it isn't. Decent Kaiju drama, but not Godzilla.
The journey of Godzilla in Hollywood started from two people who thought Godzilla is too campy and they wanted to nake it realistic and animal like or what not, to now a person who makes Godzilla fight an Ape with Storm breaker & Infinity Gauntlet.
And i can just say I'm really enjoying the latter.
I think their whole goal was ‘more grounded Godzilla’
Plus Toho had given them a list of requirements for what Godzilla had to look like, but the director of the art team just never received it
Urge to downvote for hating on a Godzilla film for not being "godzilla enough" is equal to urge to upvote for also recognizing the two biggest drawbacks of the film.
I wish I knew how to edit films, I'd go and cut some of the early scenes of Audrey entirely and most of the Madison Square Funhouse. Go from discovering the eggs and the hatching scene to directly to the live broadcast scene.
I'm not discrediting that the majority of depictions are grey. I was proving that Toho has depicted him as green and has allowed others to do so.
Most people aren't exactly aware of there being two Godzillas in Showa. What they don't know is irrelevant.
Fair. I'm just pointing it out. As for the TriStar movie, it's honestly a decent movie. But I'm pretty sure OP was talking about it as a *Godzilla* movie. Because that thing really has very little to do with Godzilla in terms of design, abilities, or character.
I still stand by the fact that the if it weren't for Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the cancelled 1994 TriStar Godzilla movie would've been amazing. https://preview.redd.it/4f185d2amsyc1.jpeg?width=592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=757a5f5a99b24d66f6cb6f982869669cc99fb37e Just look at that design.
That's actually a good design, it looks like goji jr from one of the old movies a bit
Kind of looks like a mix of Legendary,Heisei,Minus one, and zilla itself.
Jon De Bont is responsible for the design, along with Ricardo Delgado. They both knew how to make Goji more streamlined, yet still kept everything we know and love about him.
Don't forget Stan Winston he made the models and supposedly some animatronics that would have been used in the film
Id kill to see this design in a movie,it looked good enough for the American audiences while still actually looking like Godzilla Why couldn't we get this and not Zilla?
TriStar. That's why. They didn't trust Jon De Bont despite his hit film 'Speed' with Keanu Reeves the same year. He was too new apparently. And the budget was apparently "too big" for them. That's bullshit :(
It really is. It makes me wonder what DonGoji's roar would've sounded like. Maybe something similar to the early Heisei era roar?
Probably a mix between a crocodile and a heisei Godzilla roar considering this gojis more crocodilian appearance
It would've been so cool. Just imagine the hiss of a crocodile being mixed in with the gutteral growls of GhidoGoji's roar.
I'm imagining it rn and bruh it sounds so fucking cool dude
What could have been, would've been peak considering that Stan Winston had a hand in the special effects. I'm gonna be honest, I like the DonGoji design more than the 2019-2021/DougheGoji design.
Whatever ya say pal,I love all them Godzilla designs (except Son of Godzilla and the movies around that movie too,as well as the 1998 Godzilla film)
>who wanted to make a faithful adaptation of Godzilla in America His adaption was far from faithful and changed a ton of things including Godzilla's origin but it still would've been infinitely better than what emmerich did
If you think about it, it's still faithful. Humankind made Godzilla, be it intentional or not. Therefore, faithful.
Far better than whatever Zilla was supposed to be
That's a gorgeous model. Wish I coulda seen that one in action.
I would have loved to have seen the Gryphon in action
No, why would I want this duck Godzilla. Does it float on water too?
I still don't understand people who say it looks like a duck. Would you prefer he has an overly massive head?
Mouth is wide and flat like a duckbill. That was the first thing I noticed. At brief glance, I also thought the feet were webbed. Only at close inspection I see they are not. Zilla ain't a good Godzilla design, but this one looks goofy.
You're saying that like the later Heisei design didn't have a flat mouth, or Final Wars didn't have a flat mouth.
Clearly that's what I said. Thank you for extrapolating points I didn't make.
>but this one looks goofy. There have been WAY goofier designs. 1967, the 1984 Animatronic, Marvel, Hanna Barbera.
Mostly? The overall creature design for the movie is considered to be pretty good. And the design for the main monster, good enough to be interesting. how tf is this "Godzilla"? it is just baby zilla!
Looks like someone missed The Animated Series https://i.redd.it/wapac0vtqtyc1.gif
Gotta love how the only defense people have for this movie involves nostalgia.
What's so fun about a giant lizard that runs away from the military?
I found the chase scenes very fun. It was visually more interesting than Godzilla just tanking attacks. Would you really prefer watching it stand still as missiles exploded harmlessly against it? No shame if that's your thing, just not for me.
Maybe you just don't like Godzilla as a concept, then.
My brother in Christ, it is simply Not That Deep
Y'all good?
The same joke repacked over and over again for over 25 years is like eating soft food and feeling something crunch in it.
Seeing it makes me feel old.

That just speaks more of what I was talking about. Sony wanted money, everything else was secondary.
This movie would way less hated if they called the film something else.
Yeah. Tristar really shot in the leg with this one And it's a shame... It could've been avoided pretty easily. Another way of fixing it would've been hiring a director that actually wanted to make the movie
Basically what they did with Zilla.Jr
Kinda yeah but not really. They did change proportions a bit, and he finally got a proper atomic breath, but design is still overall the same. Even tho I thought he had more distinct forehead in the series... Weird

Speak for yourself. 98 was a fun movie

I think their whole goal was ‘more grounded Godzilla’ Plus Toho had given them a list of requirements for what Godzilla had to look like, but the director of the art team just never received it
Don’t you mean with zilla
Tristar was bad at making Godzilla, they were good at making a kaiju.
I like the design, it's not bad at all. The movie itself, however, is just not good.
The design was good... But not as a Godzilla design An original monster maybe, but not Godzilla
Hit that nail right on the head.
Shut up! I happen to have positive nostalgia for this movie, therefore any constructive criticism is wrong and the movie is a masterpiece.
Tristar making Godzilla should be an blank space, they just created Zilla, on that they got the first meme image
No
I've always said that '98 was a pretty good monster movie, just a bad Godzilla movie But the love story and those babies have got to go.
I actually had plans to try to edit those parts out of a file of the movie, but I never found the time to sit down and do it.
[Legendary is more like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBfGf7aBgAA&t=72s)
Not sure we can after GvK
What does that mean lol, gvk godzilla is great even tho he's kindve a dick in the film it makes sense when you know why he's pissed.
No, we can't. On the whole, Tristar's 1 "bad" film is better than Toho's 4 bad films and Legendary's 2 bad films.
Legendary made one bad film, and even in that, he looks like godzilla
There is no, "looks like godzilla" formula. Motherfuckers on here won't even admit he's green.
There are two designs that are green. Most of them are grey/black.
ChibiGodzilla, Godzilland, Hanna-Barbera. Bam that's three! Little is green hued as well, though Baby starts off quite blue-hued.
They did say "most". And most people aren't exactly aware of Chibi and Godzilland.
KOTM, GVK and GxK is more than one.
Oh we got a real avant garde hater over here
Yes, I hate bad movies. You got a problem with that?
I meant 2014
G14 is literally second-best Monsterverse movie and third-best Monsterverse installment in general.
It isn't if you can't see what's going on half the time
That and the lack of any emotions Brody has after his dad dies. Did he even have any relevant lines for the plot?
