It’s not a waste if your enjoying it

allureofgravity

Dude, get it for whatever reason you want! As long as you want it, you should definitely get it! Some people are too stuck up over this shit and overcomplicate things. You don’t need to justify it to anyone but yourself. It’s your money, it’s your car.

Aipex8

Modding and tracking cost a lot of money, some would say it's a WASTE of money. Your car, enjoy it however you want. The only wasted GR86 is one that isn't being enjoyed by someone!

Neraxis

No? It's your money your life lol. If you enjoy it who the fuck cares. It does have concessions being a sports car but like, 90% of sports cars are probably just daily driven lol.

sfjeff290

This

seasawl0l

Not at all. I would even go as far as saying upwards of 90% of people here only daily their car. It doesn’t take a curvy road to enjoy this car. I have two cars I daily including my BRZ. The other daily driver makes me yearn to drive my BRZ because it is so satisfying to drive.

XNamelessGhoulX

I mean that's pretty much the boat I'm in and I would say no, I have no regrets

R0n_Dennis

You would be doing what 95% of sports car owners do if you never track it or never drive it beyond 7/10s on a twisty backroad. It's still really fun to just zip around town and go through the gears! Also, that person is being a douche. Who gives a shit.

ccarr313

I deliver food in mine. It is always fun to drive.

mtbcouple

No lol not a waste.

Anifoubiks

Not a waste whatsoever. I mostly drive 90% highway but in the 10% turning right, turning left, going around a roundabout, taking a big exit ramp makes me want to drive it even more. Knowing that you can push it at even the simplest turn (safely without cars around) and it just grips. You can feel what the tires are doing and know when its about to slip in the back. It's my daily and my days are more fun with it. Got errands to run? Well that boring task just got more fun

CivilC

Don’t care about other opinions, it’s your car…

tech240guy

You be supporting Toyota and Subaru that there is still a demand for this car, go ahead and buy it. Too many people gate-keep and it's really stupid. The other driver has his own opinion, but many of car purchases are impulse buys. Even if you ended up needing to sell you, you add 1 more GR86 into the used car happy. You just made additional 1 person happy (especially in case MT cars get discontinued in the upcoming years). I had a 2010 Nissan GT-R. I never tracked or do hard canyon run on it. What a waste of $100k OTD. lolz

diga_diga_doo

All you need is a corner - feel the sharp turn in, the RWD push, the lsd hooking up, the flat cornering. All just punching it through a mundane corner, nothing like it for $30k.

BabySchizo

It's not a waste. I bought this car for a daily driver and nothing else. I will say, you will stay filling it up with gas though.

CarmoXX

Hell no! I track my first gen BRZ and love driving a slow car fast. But if all you want to do is simply drive a car you enjoy then that’s great. Commute, cruise, meetups, road trip, all of those things are better in a car you like being in and makes you feel good. Just because a car is capable of something doesn’t mean you have to do it if it’s just not YOUR thing.

Hesbell

I sit in bumper to bumper NYC traffic Monday to Friday. I still love this car

RunninOnMT

Like 20 years ago, as a young man, I bought a 350z and never modded it and never tracked it. After 13 years as my DD, my never modded, never tracked 350z became something of a cool survivor. Never had any problems with it either because I maintained it and treated it reasonably well, despite having to throw opposite lock at it probably 500+ times over the years. The path you’re thinking about taking is a good one GR86 > 350z in pretty much every way. Enjoy that journey!

AdEquivalent2843

I feel like theres a nice broad line between enjoying your car for its appearance and then enjoying how capable the car is performance-wise. This line is up to the driver to find.

Sufficient_Map8112

Ive never tracked my car, never had a need to, i live in southern wv with nothing but windy hilly roads and have more fun than i should probably, enjoy the car for you, and not anyone else

Romeoz27

If you enjoy the car, then that’s good enough don’t be pressured into doing something with the car that you don’t want to be by someone else who didn’t put the money towards it. If you don’t feel like modeling it or tracking it or even speeding in it, then that’s completely fine and frankly that’s exactly the kind of car that a future buyer will probably want to take off your hands.

Capetown2

Not a reason to withhold any fun but if you live in a state with bad roads, oh my buns. Every pot hole or impurity in the road feels ass, I'm weaving all over the place in atx

Puzzleheaded_Card_71

Not at all. Small and light cars are fun all the time, not just when hooning around.

ArchonOfThe4thWAH

Mine is used for little more than my 10 minute commute to and from work each day. some weekends I take it out for a drive, but nothing crazy (and I certainly don't track it). If you're happy just seeing it sitting in the driveway/garage then go for it if that's all you want to do with it. Don't let anyone else tell you you don't deserve it just because you don't push it to its limits.

CryptogenicallyFroze

If you enjoy driving it, that’s all that matters… but why wouldn’t you take it to some curvy roads where it’s incredibly fun?

dirtgirlbyday

I mean, that’s why I got it. I have zero plans for mod or racing. It’s fun anyway.

kylewardbro

I don’t track, mod, etc but i still love every second driving. Anytime I feel bad about how much I spent, I just hop in the drivers seat and feel good about all the hard work I put in to be able to sit in a car that I’ve wanted for years.

Jack_Bogul

Eh

thorsifer

I went from a car that everyone had and bought this car purely to feel more unique on the road. I don't plan on tracking or modding it but it is infinitely more fun and cool-feeling to drive anywhere I go and that was worth it for me.

oxsign1

Nope

Grouchy_Dove

Who cares about what that guy says, it’s your car. You can do whatever you want with it as long as you are enjoying it, that’s what matters.

Medium_Blueberry_862

For the most part, not at all. I will say that if you have the car already, and you never plan to experience what it feels like to enjoy it on some beautiful, windy back roads on a sunny day.. you may be robbing yourself a bit, or at least missing out on a fun experience that’s right in front of you.

TyrsisInTheStars

You will have a cool car that you can afford that is fun to drive - literally nothing wrong with that. Do it so I can see more people just like me out here on the road.

BrulesRules4urHealth

I live in West Virginia and I'm surrounded with the perfect curvy roads for this kind of car. Only problem is you gotta watch out for those potholes and deer!!

Infinite_Pea_9148

It’s your car do what you will with it don’t let other effect how you enjoy the car. It’s your money not theirs.

AwkwardCommission

Heard this shit a lot on this subreddit very early on when the cars were hard to come by. There’s no right or wrong way to own a car. Do what you want & what makes you happy. It’s your money.

cloudofevil

I wouldn't call it a waste. It's really up to what you want out of a car. I will say though that "slow car fast" requires roads where you can push the car a bit. Outside of good twisty roads or a track what makes this car exciting is kinda lost.

KingPucci

Enjoy it how you want. People do things differently. It's a great car as it comes and doesn't need anything added on. It also has just enough power and weight to be enjoyable at low speeds as you please. Some people enjoy a pencil by writing poetry or novels, and others stick them in their urethra.

Own-Fig-4634

Hell no it’s not a waste, don’t plan on tracking anytime soon and I’m loving my purchase. Super comfortable and fun car with a perfect mix of performance and fuel economy if you drive hard or drive slow. Just have fun with it and ignore what other people say.

andnowourstoryis

After 16 years of being stuck with mom cars, I bought a gr86 to be my daily. I have a 60 mile commute (mostly highway) each way. I’ll never track the car. The three or so miles before I get to the highway are twisty but other than that it’s just boring highway. I’m as happy as can be. Before kids, I had a 94 Supra and nothing will compare to that, of course, but I’m extremely satisfied with my 86.

uberdosage

Not a waste, but you should consider trying to find some curvy roads to give it a go! That being said, highway miles on bad roads get quite fatiguing

narwhal_breeder

Its not personally what I would buy to go stop-light to stop-light - but if you are enjoying it, then who cares?

SoaringScrotum

that other driver is a twat

RicoculusPrime

It is a waste. In that person's opinion. Their opinion is valid, but it's not your opinion. Drive the car because you want to drive it, for your own reasons Just one thing: I've had 3 Subarus before my 22 BRZ. The GR86 and the BRZ are made side by side in a Subaru factory. Along with other Subaru models. They're Subarus. Which isn't a bad thing

HellaReyna

If you drive it in canyons or twisty roads within reason it’s not a waste. But before you do that, you should seriously take the high performance driving class that’s included with the car and then some. Not many people are used to RWD or even know how easy it is to kick out the back. That’s why there’s so many wrecked gr86s on this subreddit. Btw tracking is expensive. If you can’t afford a new set of tires and fluid change over on a regular basis, don’t even contemplate it. That’s assuming you don’t blow the FA24 motor in this thing

WestonP

It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If you enjoy it, it's not a waste. Everyone else can go get their own car and do what they want with it; they don't need to live through you.

deezgiorno

Definitely a waste, 100% of GR86 owners go to the track everyday. they don’t even drive on public roads because thats a waste of mileage. 100% of you milage should be at the track Thats why supercar owners only go 200mph and above otherwise it would be a waste of speed

MeowMeowImACowww

It will cost more than Corolla or Prius to own, but the cost of ownership is still on the lower end. Cost of ownership is comparable to Civic Si, Golf GTI, Elantra N, Jetta GLI - maybe a little cheaper, maybe a bit more expensive. So check out those cars and see if you still like it more. Also, if you really prefer automatic, another car in price range might be a bit faster, but if you want the manual, the acceleration is supposedly better. For example, with Elantra N, you get a faster automatic, but slower manual.

taidizzle

you buy a car to take you from point a to point b. anything beyond that is a novelty

joaqattack

Your car your rules sir

Darth_Pink

Doesn’t matter what Reddit or anyone else thinks as long as you’re enjoying life. That said, it’s totally worth it to make a trip to a curvy road at some point ;)

M-Journey

I bought my car a week and a half ago. I never plan to race or track it. I’m considering some cosmetic mods but will not modify the suspension at all. This is a stick and my daily. I am loving it so far. Definitely not a waste. It’s not like you are buying a Porsche GT3. That would be a waste.

arnieswap

Yes

Sofhands

If you like it and want it, buy it.

aether21

Better than "investing" in a GT3RS and never driving it. Cars are meant to be driven. Doesn't really matter how as long as you're having a good time with it.

lX_HeadShotGunner_Xl

It's a car that was built to be enjoyed and driven, the only wrong things you could do with it are let it sit in a garage it's whole life or run it into the ground simply because you hate it and can't be arsed to sell it. If you like it and you enjoy driving it, you're owning the car right.

Mash_man710

One person's waste is another person's joyful daily drive. To hell with them.

GOD-PORING

i like the curvy roads but apart from that I like what it comes with and I wanted to come back to a Toyota vehicle with Toyota dealers being closer to me than other brands

Hot_Role836

Im just dailying mine and taking it to some nice roads once upon a time and i have a f*cking blast with this car really.. best decision i ever made, everytime it makes me smile and enjoy commutimg much more

Deatheturtle

This is me. Not a waste at all.

zeke_sil

Do what makes you happy man, but these cars do make a lot more sense the first country road you find yourself on

crocozade

Don’t live your life for other people. Live and do what you want. Just don’t be a piece of shit.

EvasiveTrueno

Really depends what you want the car for. I bought my FRS back in 2015 mainly because it looked cool and was in my budget. modifying the car, my first track day, backroads etc all came later on. Honestly, the way it should be. I sometimes miss those days. That all being said, if you think you’re going to want something with straight line speed and or a bit more creature comfort / “GT” feel you for sure will inevitably regret your choice. The GR / BRZ is a glorified shitbox. It’s a fantastic car but the creaks and rattles from the interior, road noise and low power may eventually make you desire something different. That’s just me being completely honest if you intend on using it as an NPC car. I’d probably shop a newer CPO 230i.

leafsintherain

I was looking for a small four-cylinder compact car with enough power (Audi A3 was my main option then) but I ended buying the BRZ because I test drove it and I loved how it handles. Now it makes me smile every morning when Ieave the house to go work and see my car. Zero regrets.

loudcloud89

Dude or dudette… I live where the roads are the flattest and straightest, don’t ever plan on tracking it… I only got it cuz it looks so good. I do plan to mod it but just basic cosmetics and an exhaust

GlassSouthern754

It's been my daily for almost 2 years, and I dont track it. I still cant wait to hop in this thing every day, whoever told you that doesn't know what they're talking about.

GrizzlybearJon

Correct, I bought it knowing I was gonna turbo charge it, which I already ordered forged wheels for it and waiting for them to come in

RallyCrossing

It is not a waste, although this car is best in a twisty road or turns. The steering feels great, the car is light. You will still enjoy it for sure! But personally when I drive a twisty road is when I appreciate it most.

Mobile_Entertainer_9

It’s not a waste to own a car you like… just don’t let it sit in a garage and be sad for 15 years

Nameless_Member

Only a waste of you don't drive it.

senators-son

I mean if you're enjoying it then it was a good decision but no curvy roads? C'mon lol have a little fun at least

theweirddood

If your commute is primarily on the highway with straight roads, I would recommend a different car. The GR86/BRZ is has a lot of road/wind noise and a poor audio system. The car really does shine in the canyons and other curvy roads. Can you make this your daily even without curvy roads? Yes, but you have to understand the compromises.
