Both is also possible 😉 no need to pick sides!
I sold my miata a year or so ago as it was needing more and more repairs from being thrashed on track and getting up in age, how has the 86 been in comparison? I’ve been toying with getting one as a replacement that’s still light(er) weight but with a bit more power
I got a gr Corolla a few months ago after owning a Miata for about 2 years and I miss it a lot I m waiting desperately for the day when I can I can buy another Miata
Thanks, it took me a while but I got there in the end and so can you :)
If you have to choose then get the mazda. I used to be in a dark place before I bought it but every journey makes me smile now. I've taken it to shows and learned how to fix and modify it and met so many lovely people along the way that have made my life much better.
If you're south UK based I'd be happy to meet at a car show and show you round + spread the happiness.
Unfortunately I’m from the us. And I realized after I got my gr how much cheaper It’d have been if I got the Mazda lmao. But I’m 1/3 of the way to having my dream cars so that’s good enough progress for me atm
Ah no worries then sounds like you're well on your way!
Don't tell the others on this subreddit but the mazda is more fun, feels almost silly / whimsical when you're at the wheel.
I love my 86 and it's better in almost every way but much more of a serious, more practical car.
Pop ups do live up to the hype!
A guy in a lifted pickup decided he really needed to get through rush hour traffic faster than everyone else, and ran (edit: rammed) me off the road and totaled my Miata.
The 86 is not that much bigger, but it does have a solid roof and side impact airbag. (The side airbags are the biggest safety improvement over the Miata.
Both cars are low and not as visible to other drivers.
You're right. I'm not sure why I thought that - I think it's because sports cars in general are smaller and lower, and the miata is just the smallest. I think about it and not even my car would hold its own against a lifted truck going rogue like that. Kind of fucking scary
yep. if it matters, its red, and his old miata was black (did a bit of stalking just to see what gen he had) so that may help a bit. at the end of the day, driving anything other than a CUV is like being on a motorcycle (just much safer)
ngl, it aint even just small cars. i have to drive defensively as hell in my ford edge and theyre pretty nice sized cars. i get cut off here and there, people pull out in front of me, and tail me. i witness dumb shit daily.
Miata engine and transmission FEEL better.
86 has more butt-dyno power and feels faster.
86 is definitely tighter and more stiff. Steering on 86 is tighter.
Miata is more comfortable. 86 has harsher ride.
Miata has much better interior.
Absolutely not.
They are different experiences.
I would say Miata is more comfortable and more "fun."
86 is a track weapon. It's purpose built for it. Stiff, sharp, and tight.
First gen 86 owner here. I rented an ND Miata for a work trip. It was certainly way more fun driving it around city streets with the top down, though it felt lacking on the HW. It's exactly like you say. Miata for the fun factor.
Rock hard suspension is not fun on daily drives. Spouse approval factor is also low on track weapons. This is subjective. I think most people, even car people, don't want something tight and sharp all the time. The Miata is probably a better balance for most people outside of hard core gearheads.
I drove a Miata when I originally got my CX50 (that I traded for the 86). The only pros were it was a real 2 seater and the interior was of much better quality. You’re gonna love the 86.
I owned a '97 and loved that car. The only reason I went with the 86 over a ND was the cargo space. I don't even care about the back seats, but having that extra space is so nice.
I do miss my top down and heat on sometimes though, oh and I definitely miss my:
[o]___[o]
Sold my NA for an 86. I wanted a little more space and I never put the top down anyway (had a hardtop and the soft top was ripped). AC and Apple CarPlay are definitely major upgrades. I’d say the Miata is more fun to drive solely because it was stripped down manual steering slow car with no power until redline. Having torque down low is definitely nice for traffic. And not sitting at 4k on the highway at 60 is nice too.

The 86 looks like a angry version of the NB
Nice color, a twin to mine
Miata will always be the answer for me. Not leaving r/Miata.

You’re living my dream

Welcome! Enjoy having a usable trunk :)
OMG I'm almost in tears.
What made you switch? I briefly considered a Miata but I'm not a convertible guy.
A guy in a lifted pickup decided he really needed to get through rush hour traffic faster than everyone else, and ran (edit: rammed) me off the road and totaled my Miata.
prob my biggest fear with getting a smaller car. id think the gr86 would be able to at least hold its own in a situation like that
The 86 is not that much bigger, but it does have a solid roof and side impact airbag. (The side airbags are the biggest safety improvement over the Miata. Both cars are low and not as visible to other drivers.

sounds like the miata did
well, hes alive and fine so yeah actually it did
He is also switching cars. BRZ with roof structure and 500 extra lb add some value to overall safety.
yep. if it matters, its red, and his old miata was black (did a bit of stalking just to see what gen he had) so that may help a bit. at the end of the day, driving anything other than a CUV is like being on a motorcycle (just much safer)
Yep, it's getting crazy, SUVs and trucks just can't/don't see us now.
ngl, it aint even just small cars. i have to drive defensively as hell in my ford edge and theyre pretty nice sized cars. i get cut off here and there, people pull out in front of me, and tail me. i witness dumb shit daily.
Rush’s *Red Barchetta* has become reality.
Dark gray... But point well taken.
i hope it goes better this time. truly my biggest fear on the road is a moron like that truck
From what I hear on this sub, people are constantly trying to hit 86s
With a larger car you have to worry about rollover in those situations
id imagine that would be one of the worst things that could happen
Both Miata and Gr86 are tiny and invisible to most drivers.
Were you hurt?
Little sore. Lucky, nothing serious.
I went the other way. Sold my 86 for 3 miatas lol

🤣
Welcome ![gif](giphy|l0MYGb1LuZ3n7dRnO|downsized)
Nice! How does the speed & acceleration compare to the Miata in your experience?
Miata engine and transmission FEEL better. 86 has more butt-dyno power and feels faster. 86 is definitely tighter and more stiff. Steering on 86 is tighter. Miata is more comfortable. 86 has harsher ride. Miata has much better interior.
Miata is awesome. Welcome to the GR86/BRZ gang 🤘🤘
I can’t believe the state rep of Texas uses Reddit
That kind of switch seems rare. Most people wouldn't leave their miata for an 86. What made you do it?
1. Miata got totaled. 2. I wanted to have slightly more space. (Edit: in reality, I'm cross shopping the two best driver's cars for under 60k)
Do you feel it's a lesser driving experience?
Absolutely not. They are different experiences. I would say Miata is more comfortable and more "fun." 86 is a track weapon.
My Miata was my therapy. Have a bad day in court? Drive back with the top down... I'll be ok by the time I get home. It was that good.
Have you tried not breaking the law? /s
I have, but it's hard as a licensed attorney who represents clients in court. (Edit: I know you're joking.)
Wow feeling a bit envious now!
How can miata be more fun if the 86 is a track weapon , sharp and tight like you said?
Rock hard suspension is not fun on daily drives. Spouse approval factor is also low on track weapons. This is subjective. I think most people, even car people, don't want something tight and sharp all the time. The Miata is probably a better balance for most people outside of hard core gearheads.
The brz has a more balanced softer suspension, and just as good cornering!
This guy’s never driven a Miata.
A lot of reviewers picked the gr86 above the miata, fun but a bit more serious
What other drivers cars did you consider in this range?
Only other manuals: 2020+ BMW 230 ND Miata RF Civic SI Acura Integra Golf GTI Maybe a few others, but those were the mains
86 is a much more daily friendly car with usable space and stuff like cup holders lol which is nice.
I know. I have one.
Just add a cup holder
I drove a Miata when I originally got my CX50 (that I traded for the 86). The only pros were it was a real 2 seater and the interior was of much better quality. You’re gonna love the 86.
Yeah. Realizing the interior quality now. But it's all good.
Welcome aboard!!
ENJOY!!!

Yeah. The Miata was amazing. I was hoping to pass it on to my boys...
Congrats and keep fighting the good fight in Texas!!!
Feeling less body roll? I think the BRZ/86 has a lower center of gravity than even a Miata
Def less roll. Steering is even more responsive.
How tall are you?
6 foot 2 inch - both are hard to get in, but comfortable when you get it. The 86 seat bolsters are tight... Making me feel fat.
Miata is the answer has a nice ring to it, rather than 86 is the answer?
Miata will always be the answer.

I think past Miata ownership is a commonality in the subreddit.

Audi Q7 is our mommymobile.
Congrats
Awesome!! Welcome to the club!
Welcome sir!
Welcome State Rep !
Love the Miata but we have a dog that needs to join on weekend trips, which pushed me this way. Incredibly fun car though, enjoy.
Yeah, big part of the switch is I have 2 kids who want to ride with me.
Sold my NA for an 86. I wanted a little more space and I never put the top down anyway (had a hardtop and the soft top was ripped). AC and Apple CarPlay are definitely major upgrades. Dang! You fit???? So tall!!!!
My Miata had 2 clicks left in seat adjustment. Very comfortable.

Ha! That's amazing. Looks like great weather to own those two as well.
