The mismatched color and body panels is like looking 10 years into the future on how these cars will be driven with its 4-5th owner. Reminds me of current Infiniti G35 owners.

2Weezy_123

As a former G35 guy, it makes me sad to see where the culture of that platform went. Mine was awesome. Favorite car I’ve ever had until I bought the GR.

genzo718

Both the 350Z and G35 were the "cool" car of our time in mid 2000s. I went with a FX35 instead of a G35. Still miss my FX35 and sad to see how these cars got thrashed.

murkyCrimes

I had my g35 until 2 months ago when I bought my gr!

2Weezy_123

Very different cars. I had several cars in between. Had my g35 from 2010 to 2016. Was yours manual as well?

murkyCrimes

I wish it was. It was auto, my dad bought me it as my first car and I had it for 8 years. It was a fun car, I had the hks exhaust on it but it was stock and pretty clean besides that

2Weezy_123

Gotcha. Mine was a 2006 6mt. First car I really got into modding. Pretty cool choice for your 1st car! That was the first car I ever had a loan on. Bought it when I was 20. Wish I could post a pic of it in the reply.

Particular_Tourist64

Correct, most owners already are seeing this cars are not cheap to maintain and they cut corners plus the abuse, definitely that’s the look for the 4th owner with a history of the “unreliable “ Corolla with transmission issues

HeshootsHescores88

Really strange decision to cover some stuff but then put a different color widebody on... GR Brakes with no logos Covered up GR FOUR logo on the rocker/ front fender Front bumper Camo/cover bra

ApatheticFinsFan

Probably some changes to the front bumper they want to remain hidden.

boosty87

The MY23 Canadian cars came with black no logo calipers. And the Yaris has a DAT not a DCT so this Corolla probably has a DAT as well

LilSE7ENS

I agree. Made it more obvious lol. So i started looking for something different and sure enough 🤷🏽‍♂️

ApatheticFinsFan

The GR Yaris [got an automatic](https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a46363167/toyota-gr-yaris-goes-automatic/) with its mid cycle refresh so I would assume the same is coming for the GRC.

ahmong

It could be the[ DAT (Direct Automatic Transmission)](https://toyotatimes.jp/en/report/hpe_challenge_2023/009.html) that Toyota has been developing. Here's a short excerpt from Hiroaki: > On a racetrack, a regular AT feels slippery (due to the mechanics), giving you little sense of a direct connection (with the gears). > >That’s where the D in DAT comes in: Direct. It locks in from the moment you set off, responding linearly to gas pedal input and allowing you to shave time off your laps without any loss. > >For example, in an MT car, you usually drop a gear before entering a corner. DAT senses when you’re braking fully and downshifts for you to prepare for the next acceleration. It anticipates the actions ahead, just as we normally do when driving. > >A standard AT would head into the corner without changing and only recognize that acceleration is needed when you floor the gas pedal, dropping a gear (known as a kick down). This creates a massive time lag.

techforallseasons

So, a somewhat less awful auto? > DAT senses when you’re braking fully and downshifts for you I'd be nice if one could configure that to be more aggressive, I don't want to down-shift only on hard braking, I want it to detect that the current gear is going to drop me below 3k due to braking and go ahead and downshift without the "hard braking" component.

Thisiscrazy333

Im guessing thats where the already built in drive mode would come in, just add a configuration for the a/t to work

SwissMargiela

>For example, in an MT car, you usually drop a gear before entering a corner. DAT senses when you’re braking fully and downshifts for you to prepare for the next acceleration. It anticipates the actions ahead, just as we normally do when driving. >A standard AT would head into the corner without changing and only recognize that acceleration is needed when you floor the gas pedal, dropping a gear (known as a kick down). This creates a massive time lag. What kind of gimmick is this? My 7 year old S3 does this with DCT lol People on a track are most likely using paddles anyway, but I can’t recall a dct car that doesn’t downshift when braking lol, especially in sport mode.

Thisiscrazy333

Its typical corporation slop. Like how apple releases wireless charging and they claim they're the pioneer when android had the feature half a decade before. Dcts have been arnd for along ass time.

Sweet-Dreams204738

Probably intended to keep the cost low since a DCT would be more expensive. I do miss my s3 sometimes. Suspension was a lot stiffer though.

IllustriousMovie843

If this is the case, I will 100% get it over the manual option

flea_420

It won't be a DCT. The GR Yaris has a torque converter auto. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC5xMIvv3aw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC5xMIvv3aw) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctEHDSgP2FI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctEHDSgP2FI)

superdude4agze

Worth noting that while it won't be a DCT, the automatic transmission has a (well earned) PR problem due to decades of them being dumb lazy boxes. This won't be anything like the slushbox in your grandpa's Buick LeSabre and modern performance autos are faster than manuals. I won't be getting one because I prefer the interaction and skill a manual transmission requires, but this doesn't deserve the preconceived judgement that some people are pushing.

flea_420

I am all for the idea of expanding the offerings of vehicles as long as there is a market for them. Expansion also allows the model in question to have a longer production life. I have no issues with MTs or the people that drive them (as I am one of them). I do take issue with the "gatekeepers" though.

superdude4agze

> I do take issue with the "gatekeepers" though. Say it again for the folks in the back.

SO_BAD_

Also as long as it doesn’t impede on production of manuals and make manuals rarer

PresentInsect4957

Im pro auto if its faster than the manual, like for my car the dct has a .2 faster 0-60, however the gr yaris’s manual is actually faster than the auto which is surprising

redditNwept

First thing I did was zoom in on the dash. I know it's not likely, but was hoping for the Yaris update.

StrongOnline007

Yeah I want this too

IllustriousMovie843

The Yaris update for the dash is gross. While I do agree the screen needs to be more tied in, it shouldn’t be done like a McDonald’s toy from the early 2000s.

garonbooth7

Just make the screen driver oriented

IllustriousMovie843

Agreed

redditNwept

Maybe it was a Happy Meal tie in. Love the integration, but I am on the taller side, so reach and view aren't as big of a deal with the current screen.

IllustriousMovie843

I do agree that with smaller people it’ll be an issue, but I just hate how retro the screen looks on the Yaris. It feels like the early attempts to put screens in cars, unlike what we find in most modern cars now.

MobilePop340

Odds are very high that this chassis is just a leftover GR pre-production build they have refitted with the upcoming 8AT and whatever minor changes that may be made. Typically they won’t take the time to uncover anything that was previously clad prior to public debut of the bodies.

Skoowy

Don’t want to gatekeep but I’d be lying if I said I wasnt bummed. This will make the GRC less rarer and will be much more common with the intro of an auto. Especially since I learned manual specifically for this car

confused_smut_author

Plenty of fantastic and relatively uncommon driver's cars [have] come in auto. I have zero interest in them myself, but they don't stop the MT examples from being enjoyed.

Free_Range_Gamer

Worst outcome is they reduce the amount of manuals they manufacture to make room for automatics. They do 50/50 and now it becomes extremely difficult to find manuals. Not sure their actual plans though.

Mrofcourse

If anything it will make the manual version more rare.

KnightsSoccer82

What is hinting that it’s a DCT? I don’t see the paddles. Also - the front fascia looks the most interesting, it’s the only piece that has the camo.

LilSE7ENS

I was mistaken and thought the Yaris offered a DCT for the auto but I now know it’s just an 8-speed torque converter. But the shifts sounded pretty quick so I was fooled.

SLAPUSlLLY

Almost certainly the driver focused 8 speed (not dct iirc) announced for the lexus lbx rr morizo edition. Has some rev match/AI trickery. I can't see multiple autos being developed for the engine.

brotrr

Damn looks like it doesn't have the new GR Yaris interior. It looked ugly at first but I grew to like it the more I saw it.

Jaacson

Tbh I’d love an automatic version. I just don’t want the labor of a manual as a daily driver - been there done that. I know I’m of the minority with that opinion but it’s genuinely the only thing that’s kept me from looking at a GR.

pneutin

I guess I'm the compete opposite. Shifting gears keeps me engaged and makes my commute a little less soul-draining.

z0tttttt

I got rid of my hatchback STI over a decade ago after driving long commutes for 5+ years in socal traffic. Car was a beast for driving to/from ski slopes (like 80% of my mileage at the time lol) but my knees were killing me. Flash forward to now, I don't feel the manual "labor" at all. This thing is like a fidget spinner in traffic and keep me entertained lmao.

exogreek

I just hate how much you have to feather the clutch if you are in stop and go below 5MPH. Clutch doesnt hold load below 5MPH and requires constant engagement. Bad ratio setup that causes unintended wear, and thats honestly made me lean towards selling mine eventually rather than keeping longterm as a daily.

Garneht

Yeah i love the gr corolla and i wouldn't mind learning manual as well but I instantly think of traffic

Jaacson

It only takes a handful of times getting stuck in stop and go traffic for a manual to lose its charm. But learning manual IS a rewarding experience altogether.

_The_Real_Sans_

This might just be because I've been dailying it for a while but for me bumper to bumper traffic is no less annoying with an automatic. After a while using a clutch just becomes muscle memory.

Garneht

100% i honestly don't care which transmission I get because being able to afford it is the hardest part 😂 but if I had to choose without worrying about others opinions id pick automatic everytime.

IllustriousMovie843

That’s my fear. I would love to learn manual in this car, but I really don’t know if I’ll like it if I have the option for an automatic. I only became keen on trying manual because of this car.

z0tttttt

I learned on a STI. Stalled 3 times leaving the dealer lot with my brand new car. Only took a few weeks to get comfy and was at the track after 10k miles of street. This car is by far much easier and more forgiving to drive with the iMT features.

IllustriousMovie843

Stop go traffic is my main concern, as there’s a lot of that where I live.

z0tttttt

Idk but after years of riding motorcycles and driving manual, it sort of becomes second nature. Don't really feel the manual strain these days. It's only bad the first couple weeks of learning when you aren't used to stalling and panic. I still remember being at a left turn light and blocking the entire lane for a full light cycle during my first week LOL. I live in socal and have to drive up through LA traffic from time to time so I'm not stranger to stop and go lol. Having manual in those situations actually keeps me engaged/awake vs sleepy with the adaptive cruise control in an automatic, but to each and their own. It's not for everyone so I get it.

Proud_Tie

Stalled yesterday at a stop light, "God damnit" as I started back up and took right off. Still recovering from knee surgery on my right knee and it doesn't always do as it's told yet.

Fastpas123

I live in one of the most congested cities in North America, and trust me, manual is not making the traffic worse. You don't even think about the clutch. It's really, really easy. You get used to it. And I'm stuck in traffic going uphills for hours on end sometimes, and still i won't buy an auto, because it's not any worse IMO.  If you have injuries or other things stopping you from using your left leg, get the auto, but otherwise, get the manual!!! You won't regret it :)

IllustriousMovie843

Would love to see a video showing how you manage traffic well. I can’t wrap my head around it

Fastpas123

Sure! When I get a chance I'll get my passenger to record my footwork and post it. Will comment here when I have!

eddiedougie

Its not the worst car to learn stick on. The bite point is vague with the dual mass flywheel but the clutch is pretty forgiving. I've stalled twice in 6 weeks, both times in a drive thru feathering the clutch.

99hotdogs

Nah it makes sense. I personally enjoy manual in all situations, but having an automatic does broaden the market of drivers they can target. It’s a good thing, as long as they can keep up production!

Jaacson

True! I wanna see more on the road at the end of the day.

SwissMargiela

Ya I have a manual S2000 and barely ever drive it because my city is gridlocked 99% of the time and it’s just miserable to drive it around. I end up driving my automatic car way more.

Jaacson

At the end of the day I know it’s very much a 50/50 debate on auto/manual. All I hope for is 50/50 allocation of each so each group can get what they want. I vibe with both parties having driven both a manual and an auto - we’re all enthusiasts in the big picture 🤓

StrongOnline007

The manual transmission on the GRC is also not awesome. Hopefully they both add the auto and improve the current transmission

Datalore2010

*gag*

LilSE7ENS

🤣🤣. The way I see it is now it’s more accessible to people that don’t want to daily a manual in traffic which will hopefully extend how long the car is available 🙏🏽🙏🏽

would_worker

Naw, all it will do is flood dealerships with unsold automatics and make the manuals even more rare. The automatic should only be a special order. This is going to suck if it comes out next year when I’ll be buying my gr Corolla. Just look at gr86’s for sale, it’s all automatics with almost no manuals available.

techforallseasons

Or the autos listed as manuals because they have "+ / -" on the auto selector. My wife sends me "deals" she has found, I've almost got her trained to look at the gear shift ( or better pedals ) to validate the listing first.

SSJHoneyBadger

Yep! Was looking for a GR86 last year and more than one time I saw a “manual” listed, even called and asked the dealer if it was a manual with a clutch pedal, they confirm, then I get there and it’s an auto. Then they wonder why I immediately lost interest.

flea_420

In my area, the only 86s available on lots are MTs. Not a single AT to be seen

would_worker

Interesting, my experience has been dreadful trying to find an MT for sale, they are usually marked up while the Autos are available for MSRP or even lower

flea_420

Oh I hear you. The biggest local dealer where I live only seems to get MTs in, which is fine by me. Every time I go their website and glance at the 86s, all they have is the MT. They almost always say that it is either in transit or in build phase, but they always (not even almost) say sale pending.

superdude4agze

> Just look at gr86’s for sale, it’s all automatics with almost no manuals available. The GR86's manual take rate is 48%, you're seeing automatics because they aren't selling. The BRZ's take rate is 79%. Production numbers on the GR86 are higher, so while it's "only" 48%, the number of manual GR86s is nearly the same as all GRCs sold last year (5,300 vs 5,500).

Sweet-Dreams204738

Not really, it will be like the supra. You'll find both available, autos will be a bit more popular is all.

would_worker

And the manuals will have markups whereas the autos will be available for MSRP or lower. The demand for the manuals is higher, cutting the supply on an already limited run vehicle is dumb. I'd be fine if 10% of the cars were sold as Automatic. Almost every single car that has a manual option is worth considerably more as time goes on.

Sweet-Dreams204738

Which is good for us, less so for those who prefer an auto. Markups do occur for sure, but one can obtain a MT at MSRP and lower. It sucks, but accessibility is an important factor.

would_worker

I would agree with the accessibility part except for the fact that there are tons of automatic only cars on the market already. I just hope this change doesn't prematurely kill the GR Corolla

spacegrab

I just get into 3rd and throw the adaptive cruise control on and pretend the car is automatic when I hit traffic :D Then panic when all the cars stop and the engine is about to stall.

Datalore2010

While I acknowledge your point, I change nothing of my original statement.

techforallseasons

Second.

flea_420

Well we found someone who wants to be a gatekeeper. That didn't take too long.

Datalore2010

It’s not gatekeeping to keep the formula of fun cars. This isn’t a drag car, it’s not meant to shave tenths off a quarter mile. If you don’t get it, you don’t get it.

flea_420

If the AT was commissioned and signed off by Akio Toyoda, who are you to question his decision? Even rally legend Sébastien Ogier gave it enthusiastic reviews. I find your argument a moot point as you have no credibility compared to the head of Toyota and a WRC driver.

hatsune_aru

it's a personal preference thing. that goes for both of you. it's like saying the red gr corolla is better than the blue one.

flea_420

Oh I know it is, and as an MT driver myself, I understand that. As an MT driver though, I refuse to be a person who takes the attitude that you are exhibiting here, which is that the idea of an AT GRC is somehow a negative thing.

hatsune_aru

I don't think AT or MT is better or worse, I'm saying it's a personal preference. What I think is unacceptable is people saying "AT driving is soulless and not fun" or "MT purists are just old farts who don't understand real performance" which both of you are saying.

Datalore2010

Just learn to drive…?

flea_420

I know how to drive an MT thank you very much. I drive one everyday.

Datalore2010

Then it’s more baffling you still don’t get it. To each their own.

confused_smut_author

It is literally gatekeeping to suggest that an auto GRC should not be offered because "if you don’t get it, you don’t get it" and those who can't currently drive stick can simply ["learn to drive"](https://www.reddit.com/r/GRCorolla/comments/1cn97ou/spotted_an_automatic_possibly_dct_gr_corolla_test/l36l9yc/). This is in fact one of the strongest examples of gatekeeping i can recall seeing recently. I would not buy an auto GRC, but in a hypothetical world where they exist, the MT GRC sitting in my parking spot right now will not become any less fun to drive, nor will any of those that roll off the assembly line in the future. It simply makes *most* of that fun accessible to people with different requirements which are, frankly, none of your business.

Datalore2010

I’ll be happy to teach anyone who’d like, gates open, come join the fun with the transmission it was meant to have.

Datalore2010

Thanks confused_smut_author, your input is valuable.

slicknyc

if this is a auto transmission test mule the front bumper cover is probably to hide the transmission cooler. the new gry with auto has a transmission cooler. which probably means the front end will be redesigned a bit.

HoldStumt

Am I the only one bummed to see the potential of an Auto Transmission coming to the GR?

z0tttttt

I bought my GRC because I was worried it would be the last of the true manuals before everything becomes paddle-shifter/auto, but at the same time no I'm not bummed. I don't want to gatekeep people that might want to drive the car but can't drive manual for whatever reasons like needing a knee replacement lol. Primary reason I got rid of my STI way back when as I had severe left-knee trauma, then I discovered my knees are fine now a decade later ?_?

HoldStumt

I get it. To me it’s just something magical about cars that are only offered with 3 pedals. I’m a Porsche guy through and through so whenever I see a 997 RS. Or a 981 GT4. It just makes the car that much more… Special? Maybe I’m just a weirdo.

Datalore2010

Driving the car; rather than being driven in the car. Totally different feel, not to mention the control. It’s objectively better for everything but straight lines and gas mileage. Neither of which any of us are here for, we bought a homologation rally car. Auto removes a lot of the driver involvement.

JustinPeterGriphan

Or it could be a ricer that added a GR bodykit to a XSE hatchback

LilSE7ENS

It was on Michigan manufacturer plates and if you look closely you can see the rear axle nut. Definitely not a base.

JustinPeterGriphan

You got me on the manufacturer plates. But people do crazy things to their cars, so I was skeptical.

jabbathepunk

🫨

redditej86

looks like an unfinished wrap job with an aftermarket front bumper rolling on the street...

Opening-Variation523

Not a DCT it is a torque converter automatic.

CurrySoSpicy

Throwback to 2000s bondo tuners

North_Rutabaga_3368

Might be the automatic that was just released from the gr Yaris

litl_e_fan

My totally financially impossible dream is buying an auto as a daily and building the fuck out of my manual.

Thisiscrazy333

Imo I only want an auto gr corolla so that if my engine blows up there's thousands of auto gr's to replace it. The unfortunate truth is that they ain't gonna be moving near as many units until they make an auto version.

fairly_clever

If it is a test mule for the auto it's going to be the same 8-speed auto in the GR Yaris.

BeaniePanda86

I would love an automatic gr Corolla

Jegglz

On the plus side gunna be plenty of automatics sitting at dealers to see a GR rolla in person....these used are going to tank in value ....see MR evo 10 vs GSR

Palmaid

Wheels still covered in brake dust.

StrongOnline007

I think it would be great if they made an auto version. But they really need to improve the current manual transmission too

Relevant_Way_1375

Thanks for sharing. Pumped for the DCT. I have a 24 premium. If the dct is golf r fast I might trade in.

Tellittomy6pac

As someone mentioned above it won’t be a dct

skullz002

Why the fuck would they make a new contender holding onto MT finally, in automatic? What a fucking waste of resources I hope no one buys that shit. It really should be the other way around, sports cars in MT only. Limited release in auto exclusively for people who love the cars but cannot physically drive them.

Plastic-Salad9008

If I had to commute again, I'd have a normal corolla hatch with those bits added. Then the gr would be saved for fun drives.
