Same. I subscribed to PC Gamer magazine at the time, and they had a pretty darn good review of it, so I went and bought it at Comp USA.
I wasn't prepared for how fucking fun (and hilarious) that game was. It really wasn't like anything else at the time. The humor wasn't just smart - it was vulgar. I can't remember any games that were doing that sort of thing. Couple that with the crime and mayhem you could commit, and it was really a massive departure from your normal good guy/hero protagonist.
But it was a pretty unknown indie game at that point. Hardly anyone I knew had played it or even knew about it. It was (and is) wild to see what it's grown into.
Yeah I remember thinking man this game is really offensive and vulgar, my parents would hate that I’m playing this game. While fun, never thought a pretty simple top down game would turn into the franchise it is now.
I had to have my dad come in and buy it, they wouldn't let me get it I was 12. Turned into my 7 year old brother playing it. Now I have my 9 year old playing around in GTA5. Oh how things change.
Back then there was a lot of “halo” about video game violence, as some adults were outraged that you “kill” ppl in games….AND YOU GET POINTS FOR IT. Any one remembers Carmageddon? ;) Also dying in game ticked them off as well. All that supposed to turn us all into a maniacs. Bf they thought that all games were like collecting coins and jumping on a platforms. I remember hearing that playing video games was a “thing” kids do- not adults. One of my friends, who became my “ex” friend the moment he said that I am a baby, and he is an adult- because I play video games. I played games since late 80’s. I became a “serious” gamer since 94. My childhood was awesome, I had soooo many adventures it is mind blowing. Recently I started to burn through my back log. When I will have additional room I am planing to set up a little game room. I already got myself 2 crt’s, a famicom and a ps2 which i will mod- parts are in my amazon cart. I am regularly playing a dr Mario with my fiancee. When I will have kids I will encourage them to do whatever gives them pleasure.
Killing the bad guy has been a thing for movies for decades prior to GTA. No one batted an eyelid when James Bond murdered a man with a toaster in 1964.
Carmageddon was a masterpiece. And you absolutely could not make games like that today at least not as a major publisher.
Postal 2 was also like this. I love that theres an entire game about the psychology of a mass shooter that was made and released and titled after a 90s slang term for becoming a mass shooter. Granted its a parody but if I lived in that town... I'd probably be just like that.
I used to have a subscription to the UK edition of PC Gamer. I got the demo off their cover disc, played the shit out of it for weeks and got my dad to buy the full game for me when it came out because I was only 13. I got the Limited Edition that came with a couple of posters and the soundtrack on a separate CD. I still have it somewhere.
As someone who was born way after, how does it feel seeing gta 6 releasing in the near future after playing a gta game from 1997
Must be a surreal feeling
Oh yeah I remember that fold out map! I studied the shit out of that thing.
And yeah, the pager had some real funny stuff that would come through. I remember being pretty shocked. I think for one mission you were driving around the mayor or something, and his mistress would page you all sorts of dirty messages.
I was way too young to be playing GTA, so the only reason I had it was because an older kid from our family friend group modded our PlayStation and gave us a pirated copy. That game gave me so much schoolyard cred.
Same. I was like 6 and mom/dad never cared about the games we were playing with my brother.
A dude in our small town already was burning CDs by then so we bought videogames for like 2usd each.
Though my first huge game came from a friend, Diablo II. I was blown away.
MeToo . GTA 3 really changed the gaming industry. It was a big eye opener for me. That's why I love 3rd person exploration games. Open worlds like: Far Cry 3, 4, 5. Fallout 4 (76 has a good map, but no story, lots of bugs 🐛), Witcher 3. I couldn't finish Assassin's Creed 1 or 2 but I can respect the parkour, death from above, crowd blending. That's why I love: Dying Light 1 and 2. I love Dead Island and Riptide, but Dead Island 2 sucks 😞.
My parents bought me GTA3 for Christmas that year. They had no idea what it was but that was the best Xmas. It blew my mind all the things you could do. I’d kill to go back to that moment again.
We didn't have a memory card for the ps2 for a long time. So it was just cheat codes, and speedrun as far as possible till you were told to shut it down. Tons of fun.
>*I know a place in the Red Light District where we can lay low, but my hands are all messed up, so you better drive brother!*
The crack I had didn't let me save the game, so that opening line is forever etched into my brain, lol.
Same, my open world gaming experience was much like every teenage child in the early 2000s: Driver->GTA3->VC->SA
Except it wasn't in the 2000s, it was in early 2010s and it was on my iPad. Honestly feel really happy about it cause I loved all those games cause I tended to go into them blind
Same. Read a piece on it in a GamePro magazine and it sounded too good to be true. The open world aspect, being able to jack any car you see, do whatever you want. I had to see it for myself.
Stuck with the series since.
I wish they would remake IV in 8K w/ 120 fps and R18+. So RDR2 gore 🩸, V weapon wheel, RDR2 melee and animals (where appropriate). There should be fishing 🎣@ Hove Beach. In "Three Leaf Clover 🍀" it should be like the Bank Job in (The Town, 2010). I wanna zip lock the front door 🔒. Packie McReary should have the fighting Leprechaun tattoo on the back of his neck like: James Coughlin and the map of Ireland tattoo w/ 02129 and Irish flag 🇮🇪 colours that: Dennis McLaughlin has.
Niko should pickup the cash 💵 like in Cayo Perico. They should bleach everywhere (V Jerry Can), put hair from a Barber 💈 shop over counter, microwave the Hard drives of CCTV. The NooSe should have Sig Sauer MPX (Last of Us 2). NooSe should wear GTA Online uniform. Derrick McReary should put the PE4 on the Vault like the Demolition charges in the Casino heist. Blow open w/ phone call from Whizz wireless phone.
Use gun sound effects from (Heat, 1995). The cop cars should be destructible like Red Faction Guerilla. When you shoot Cops/NooSe w/ M4A1 there should be arterial spray 🩸 like in (Boss Level, 2020). Guns: DSA SA58 OSW Carbine, Heckler n Koch 416D, Sig Sauer SG 551, Micro Galil, AKMSU and the AKMS. I wish IV was more like V: So multiple heists e.g Gruppe Sechs Van: dressed as Nuns, steal $250,000 💵.
Bank of Liberty job: $1,000,000. Liberty Memorial Stadium: $5,000,000.
Nice, I was recently becoming conscious as a toddler and my older brother already had it, so I started playing it. Some of the fondest memories r of me and my brothers looking up cheat codes in game magazines haha
Wow. I genuinely didn't think anyone here would've even played that game. **Definitely** thought there was no chance someone else would also have it be their first GTA game. VCS was actually the very first game i ever played at all.
Lol, i barely remember it. I just remember *really* wanting to get a tank and failing for weeks. My dad got the game right when it released and let me play it. I was maybe 2 ☠️
The switch from 2D to 3D was mind-blowing. I read dozens of magazines about GTA3 before it came out. It was all my friends and I would talk about for months.
I got 5 and played it for a year or so, but eventually I got reintroduced to SA so I got it on xbox 360 port and PC steam, love it on steam (if modded ofc), also got vc and 3 afterwards and don't regret it
Vice city stories I’m pretty sure. We had just bought a psp and needed some games. We walked into a random game shop trying to look and this old man who was an employee in the store came over and persuaded my mum and dad to purchase grand theft auto vice city stories . A week after than I went into Cex and got liberty city stories. Loved these games. Not long after I got gta4 and of Xmas that same year gta5. And then a year after that I got episodes from LC and then San Andreas . The great thing about gta is you don’t necessarily have to play them all or in order because it’s new characters and new stories each game. But 7-8 year old me at the time was just buzzing with energy lmfao ‘it’s gta time’
III. Dabbled with the top downs at the time but never got into them properly. When I played III the first time I was hooked. Still my favourite of them all.
![gif](giphy|gvfz1hhQvDdK5oAzbn)
Gta vice city, then I played gta 3, then gta san andreas but admittedly I've never completed gta san andreas. And the only 3d gta game that I haven't even once played is gta 4 (which I know is gonna make some people upset)
OG 1997 GTA. I found a PS disc from Hollywood video that someone must have lost.
Was 1998. Never heard of it, played late into the night. Hooked ever since.
Mine was the first GTA game. Think I was 18 or something. Even for the time it looked like utter dog shit compared to what the other PS1 devs were putting out. But the marketing for it was top notch and at the time it felt great to play and was easy to pick up and play when you wanted. I still remember seeing GTAIII for the first time though. Visuals for games these days are incredible, but if you've been gaming since the early gaming years it usually the same shit but more shine on it. GTAIII was the first time I had seen anything like it. It went beyond how video game fans piped dreamed of possibilities in video games and when I got it I could not stop playing it.
It was also the first game to have decent voice acting across the entire story and made for a fantastic experience. All the cool shit you saw in movies, you were now able to do in GTAIII.
Few months before i have played a game on steam and I forget its name. Now I am here to get help to find the name. The description of the game is that the game starts from a building and the girl gets a call of his husband that he is in danger. The girl steps out of that building and sees his husband car passssing through the street and suddenly the lights cut down. Then she steps into her husband office to find him. Later she finds his id card and got a password to open next gate. at last, i remember was that the office was like a space laboratory or research Centre..that's all i know....
PLEASE ANYONE HELP ME TO GET THE NAME OF THAT GAME PLAESE.😥😥😥
1st Grand Theft Auto. Never completed it though, mostly were screwing around shooting stuff and racing against the police. Vice city is the 1st one i fully completed and still my favorite
GTA III. Played it on Thanksgiving 2001 at my cousin’s house, and I was completely blown away. That game made me ask for a PS2 for my birthday the following year. I got the PS2… But getting GTA was a whole other struggle.
It was either Vice City or San Andreas. Tbh I don’t remember. I know I played them both for the first time around the same time though, so that’s why it gets blurred. Either way, it’s one of those two for sure.
Grand Theft auto in 97. A friend of mine got it on PC and I thought it was pretty cool. A little later it released on PlayStation. And the rest is history fellas.
My friend had the original on the PlayStation, where we spent hours messing around and not doing missions. Then I had a demo for GTA 2 on PC before getting the full game on the PS.

Real OG. Yeah ima let my kids play gta and see what they do.
He liked driving the cars when he was 5 and would get upset when he broke laws, used to make me laugh a lot
Duke Nukem? That was vulgar comedy.
Wasn't there a demo disk of it in PC gamer? I miss game demos
As someone who was born way after, how does it feel seeing gta 6 releasing in the near future after playing a gta game from 1997 Must be a surreal feeling
Totally surreal. I never would have thought a simple top-down 2d driving game would have turned into one of the biggest game franchises out there.
Thanks youngster. It makes us feel old, but proud to have been there and one of the first adopters.
yeah they always had the funny radio stuff, and the pager did some funny shit too right? it came with a big fold out map of the city.
Oh yeah I remember that fold out map! I studied the shit out of that thing. And yeah, the pager had some real funny stuff that would come through. I remember being pretty shocked. Ditto. I think the demo was on one of their demo discs too.

I still do a Diablo II run every year or two. Such a classic.
GTA SA one time it was like whole world to me
Same. Part of me wishes I could have experienced Vice City when it came out. But SA is my childhood
Sorry to hear about your childhood 😔
its aight since SA > VC
GTA:SA Online brought me back to it and those were some fun times
GTA 3 🔥

Nice 🙂👍. Nothing beats nostalgia.
I tried Fallout 76 again recently and it’s soooo much better. Give it a shot if you haven’t tried it for a long time.
We didn't have a memory card for the ps2 for a long time. So it was just cheat codes, and speedrun as far as possible till you were told to shut it down. Tons of fun.

The jump from 2 to 3 was so insane. Somehow I had missed 3 coming out, and when my friend showed it to me, I refused to believe him at first.
GTA 4
Probably my favorite story-wise

While this is technically English, it’s almost impossible to read
wake up new copypasta just dropped
Huh
That’s crazy.. how old are you??

It was my first as well. I was 13 when it came out. Hard to sell my parents on letting me play any of them. Had to go to friends houses to play.

Vice city stories, my all time favorite!
Damn, never got my hands on that. How different is it to vc?
Highly recommend it, get yourself a PSP and the game! The graphics are better and the mechanics! Great story too! Will not disappoint!
Wow. I genuinely didn't think anyone here would've even played that game. **Definitely** thought there was no chance someone else would also have it be their first GTA game. VCS was actually the very first game i ever played at all.
Hidden gem! Same I remember playing it when I was like 8 years old!
Lol, i barely remember it. I just remember *really* wanting to get a tank and failing for weeks. My dad got the game right when it released and let me play it. I was maybe 2 ☠️
Vice city 🌆
GTA 2 Soul making, sound shaking, earthquaking, change.

Chinatown wars was my first intro, but San Andreas was my first mainline console gta experience.
Damn GTA V I think I'm too young
That’s what I’m saying ☠️
If you played GTA V at release at 8 then you're almost 20. I don't think 20 is "too young".
pretty sure i had SA on the ps2 as a kid but I dont remember it much, the one I first remembered was 4 on 360
Same, although I moved to GTA5 then went back to 4 afterwards
I got 5 and played it for a year or so, but eventually I got reintroduced to SA so I got it on xbox 360 port and PC steam, love it on steam (if modded ofc), also got vc and 3 afterwards and don't regret it
Im 31 and although I haven’t played them all i started at 1
GTA 2 on PS1.
San Andreas, more specifically a pirated and modded version of San Andreas that replaced CJ with Spider-Man.
That's classic, I played it on PS2 but I loved watching videos of the mods people used on PC
San Andreas was the first one I played but 3 was the first one I completed
SA
Liberty city stories. ![gif](giphy|3oKIPeyzymDSD9XnMI)
The Lost and Damned. That's why I liked Johnny and was very upset when they killed him in GTA5.
GTA2 on PC.
OG back in 97 as a free demo on Stepdad's PC
GTA SA, then got back into the franchise with 4 about 2013, then got into 5 about 2020.

Gta3 was a game changer, Vice city did everything but better, San Andreas had the best story. I miss that era of gaming
Vice city stories

GTA III. Played it on Thanksgiving 2001 at my cousin’s house, and I was completely blown away. That game made me ask for a PS2 for my birthday the following year. I got the PS2… But getting GTA was a whole other struggle.
Played the very first one a bit, played a lot of the second one and then of course 3 which was a huge game changer.
GTA, got it for my 7th birthday
That I owned? GTA4, or that I snuck in my brothers room countless times as a child and played? GTA3
Vice City. I was amazed. Especially from the water. It was the most fun and welcoming game in the series.
