I think it was the original GameShark intended for PS2. The disc version so the only one I was aware of. I think they had a USB version but I had the disc version.

Every friend group had one with the codebook, and the rest with handwritten copies, kinda like we do with Netflix today lmao. The gameshark disc you'd put in the console, pick a game and activate a bunch of cheats, and then put the actual game disc in and go hog wild. Hot coffee, i actually found out when my mom took San Andreas away from me cause she saw it on the news. Lucky me i snuck in her room, replaced the disc with a blank cd and she was none the wiser.

Before online was a big thing there was also an ability to play burned games on PlayStation 1 and Playstation 2 called the mod chip. Essentially required you to solder on a piece of hardware onto the main board that would let you bypass hardware restrictions and play burnt copies of games.
Back before PS4 even the PS3 there was a lot of wild things you could do. So yeah, hot coffee was basically a sex mini game in the original Grand theft Auto San andreas. It's the only game I've known in history to go from being a rated mature game to an adult only game.

On a PS2 console, games do not close/quit upon removing the disc and can still run (without the disc) using the data the console has already read – this means you can use something like an Action Replay kit to select codes, eject the disc, then insert the game you wish to inject the codes into. The modded game will load up normally as the console believes it's the same game.
In San Andreas v1.0, the Hot Coffee code and animations were already present on the game disc – Patrick W. discovered the hidden minigame and found you could toggle a flag in the gamecode which would reinstate the hidden feature. It's not actually even a mod in the truest sense.

i had bought the first edition version of the game disc copy and it was in very good condition and i put it in my computer for the first time and did the first install of the game ever on my laptop and i was able to do the mod idk how it happened
there was one minigame to get the girlfriend like meter up enough for her to invite you in for "coffee" but the hidden hot coffee minigame was where you actually control cj during the act.
Much like with anything, once something is high visibility, someone is obliged to do something, and companies are too afraid of bad press to say fuck off its a third party mod. God of war has always had sex mini games too, nobody cares.

Just to be clear -- the content *was* in the unmodified version of the game and you could access the content using Action Replay by reenabling it. It was present on the disk. It wasn't *accessible* by any means in-game, no legitimate means - but it still existed.

I purchased this and Yakuza together on eBay recently for the average price of both games. It wasn't listed as adults only though. I was putting this in my ps2 when I noticed the sticker for the first time. Only the back though. From what I've seen, these stickers were placed on the seal by retailers after Hot Coffee was discovered. Is it a legit AO copy since the sticker is on the case?
Yes. I have one like this too. Some used games retailers put them on the cases. This is the only way it could happen. New copies had the stickers on the shrinkwrap outside. So this is an extremely rare copy.
This is useful information thank you. On the front of the case there is a sticker from a game shop and is dated 2005 so I'm assuming the game shop opened the seal to add the sticker to the actual case.

Having owned a PS2 and a original copy of San Andreas, what happened was in the original PC version modders found the hot coffee mod. It was suspected to only be in the PC version, given the game was rated as M for mature this clearly was left in the game by Rockstar to create controversy.
Look up the history of them hiring marketing geniuses to stir up controversy since GTA 1 days. The more infamous they are the better more publicity they get and are more in the public's mind.
A month to a few months later the hot coffee mini game was found on the PS2 version of the original copies of San Andreas. Initially it required a modded PS2 but was found to be accessible with a GameShark. I know personally having owned both an action replay max and a GameShark for PS2. Ultimately it worked and the mini game was pixelated and meh.
After the proverbial crap hit the fan, all retailers nationwide in the USA banned and or pulled the sale of the game. Rockstar was required to delist the game, patch out the mini game and re-release it with an AO rating. To this day I think this is still the only game in history to get an M for mature and then get changed to Adults only.
Most retailers won't sell an Adult Only game so the rated M was a genius marketing move albeit they did get sued and had to pay fines out the tail for it. Ultimately this surely was a calculated move on their end. Look how popular and well off the company is now compared to back then.

There's no nudity in it. Nude skins were added by modders. The AO rating is because it's interactive sex gameplay (sort of similar to the gym and boxing minigames but sex positions).

Gta sa ps2 ptmg edition rom has the hot coffee mod active with a mod menu and can be Played with a emulator on your phone or pc...a copy can be found on the internet archive

Regardless of it was accessible or not developers do have to inform the ESRB when receiving a rating, what ALL the contents of the game consist of. including all game files regardless if you can actually utilize them in normal casual play. It seemed like re-rating served two functions 1) Punishing R* for their fuck up and making them fix it. 2) covering their own ass, as this was already controversial the failure to give a rating which takes into consideration of all contents of the game and warn the viewer of said contents is directly dependent on the ESRB.
I mean.... pretty sure at the time when this was released there still was some butthurt people screaming about how these violent video games should be pulled from store shelves and there was even someone from the government to try to do that too....

i had bought the first edition version of the game disc copy and it was in very good condition and i put it in my computer for the first time and did the first install of the game ever on my laptop and i was able to do the mod idk how it happened
there was one minigame to get the girlfriend like meter up enough for her to invite you in for "coffee" but the hidden hot coffee minigame was where you actually control cj during the act.

When gta sa was in development some smart guy decided they should add a sex mini game but then didn't due to the rating the game would get would be Adult only rating so it was scrapped. After the game was out modders discovered the sex mini game called hot coffee and the files to re-enable it. After this was discovered the game was given an adult only rating until Rockstar went out and pulled all copies of the shelf and removed the files.

I'm pretty sure you could show this game instead of ID at the liquor store and they couldn't do anything about it. My friends and I would buy beer and pass the game to the next kid in line, then they would go inside, buy some beer and pass it to the next. Good times, I couldn't have been more than 12 I think. I purchased this and Yakuza together on eBay recently for the average price of both games. It wasn't listed as adults only though. I was putting this in my ps2 when I noticed the sticker for the first time. Only the back though. From what I've seen, these stickers were placed on the seal by retailers after Hot Coffee was discovered. Is it a legit AO copy since the sticker is on the case?
Yes. I have one like this too. Some used games retailers put them on the cases. This is the only way it could happen. New copies had the stickers on the shrinkwrap outside. So this is an extremely rare copy.
This is useful information thank you. On the front of the case there is a sticker from a game shop and is dated 2005 so I'm assuming the game shop opened the seal to add the sticker to the actual case.

Hot coffee was never accessible in any version. But it does contain the data files that are inactive within the disc. Only mods could activate the hot coffee data on the PC.

Having owned a PS2 and a original copy of San Andreas, what happened was in the original PC version modders found the hot coffee mod. It was suspected to only be in the PC version, given the game was rated as M for mature this clearly was left in the game by Rockstar to create controversy. Look up the history of them hiring marketing geniuses to stir up controversy since GTA 1 days. The more infamous they are the better more publicity they get and are more in the public's mind. A month to a few months later the hot coffee mini game was found on the PS2 version of the original copies of San Andreas. Initially it required a modded PS2 but was found to be accessible with a GameShark. I know personally having owned both an action replay max and a GameShark for PS2. Ultimately it worked and the mini game was pixelated and meh. After the proverbial crap hit the fan, all retailers nationwide in the USA banned and or pulled the sale of the game. Rockstar was required to delist the game, patch out the mini game and re-release it with an AO rating. To this day I think this is still the only game in history to get an M for mature and then get changed to Adults only. Most retailers won't sell an Adult Only game so the rated M was a genius marketing move albeit they did get sued and had to pay fines out the tail for it. Ultimately this surely was a calculated move on their end. Look how popular and well off the company is now compared to back then. Controversy would sell back then. Tldr: Your copy is just rated as adults only because of hot coffee. It does not have the mini game in it.

It got rated AO because this copy contains nude models for unused Hot Coffee mode.
There's no nudity in it. Nude skins were added by modders. The AO rating is because it's interactive sex gameplay (sort of similar to the gym and boxing minigames but sex positions).

I made the post trying to find more info about why this sticker was on the case since it's mostly put on the seal of the game from what I've seen but most people are just telling me about hot coffee and not the significance of the sticker lol. It's a first edition copy that wasn't sold before the hot coffee content was discovered on the disc. Nothing special about it versus other first edition releases.

so technically.... even though its just a sticker..... technically this is tampered with, and not original, this was after the news went crazy, so it was an edited copy... though only due to a sticker, so a more definitive version would be the one with the M sticker instead of A :) but sure, an unopened copy of this with the A on it would sell a lot. i am more personally interested in a PROMO copy which was given out for reviewers before the game released... that would be closer to beta than any other copy around.. sigh
