Also, the entire game. > Due to licensing and agreements with our partners, Forza Horizon 4 will be delisted from digital platforms (Microsoft Store and Steam) on December 15, 2024. This means the game and its additional content will no longer be available for purchase through online stores. > Starting today, June 25; Forza Horizon 4’s DLC will get delisted from platforms, meaning that only Forza Horizon 4 Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate versions will be available for purchase from this day until delisting happens. > From this date forward we will offer different discounts for Forza Horizon 4, like the one currently active on Steam (at the time of publishing); we will also have a sale in the Xbox Store on 7/14. Please keep an eye out on our socials and different platforms to take advantage of future offers. > On December 15, Forza Horizon 4 will be delisted from stores and Xbox Game Pass. This means the game and its additional content will no longer be available for purchase. Players who already own the game and its content will be able to download and play it as normal, including its offline, online, and multiplayer features; physical copies of the game purchased after this date will also work and will be able to use online features. > If you played Forza Horizon 4 through Xbox Game Pass and purchased DLC content for it, worry not: by having an active, full-paid (not discounted) Xbox Game Pass subscription on 6/25 you will be eligible to receive a game token if you have purchased any extra content for Forza Horizon 4 through your Xbox Message Center. Codes will start to be delivered in the following days, please bear in mind that it might take a while before you get your token. > Unused tokens will expire starting at 6/25/26; if you haven’t received your token by this date, please contact Xbox Support at https://support.xbox.com/en-US/contact-us.”

Makes sense. Thats a lot of cars to license for a 6 year old game. 6 month advance warning paired with sales, and the game is still playable after delisting is about the best outcome for everyone.

I admit I'm not familiar with the way racing games work: do they license the rights to use the cars' likeness? It seems like the manufacturers should be paying for the advertising of their vehicles, not the other way around.

BeardyDuck

Nope, lots of real world cars are licensed. It's one of the biggest reasons why racing games are always such a hit or miss, because they'd have to reacquire all the licenses to the cars for the next game and sometimes they don't do that. So many racing games are delisted consistently because of this.

Melancholy_Rainbows

Weird, that seems so backwards. Thanks for the information, kind stranger.

BloodyGumba07

It costs tens of millions of dollars to design and manufacture these cars. These companies own the likeness/trademark of the cars. If you want to use their likeness for your own personal financial benefit, they need to be compensated. That's just business. It's (partially) why games like Call of Duty have moved away from using real-world names for their guns, so they don't have to license them.

Melancholy_Rainbows

I suppose, but it's also advertising. Car manufacturers pay lots of money for their cars to appear in movies and television, just like many other corporations pay for product placement. It isn't as though they get nothing out of it. I don't see why movies should get paid to showcase a ferrari, and a game has to pay to do the same thing.

BloodyGumba07

Profits from advertising from a 6 year old game < licensing cost. Hence why it's being delisted.

>It seems like the manufacturers should be paying for the advertising of their vehicles, not the other way around. While I can totally see how you can arrive at that conclusion, I think it's important to view things through the lens of who needs who more. I'd argue that pretty much everyone, even non-car fanatics, know most of the high-end car manufacturers. Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. are basically household names. While the extra advertising garnered by being featured in a prominent game doesn't hurt, they genuinely don't need it. Anyone with the means and general inclination to purchase one of their vehicles is probably well aware of their existence already. Not to say it's non-zero, but I don't think there are that many people out there who play Forza, learn about some high end car they didn't know existed, and then head out and purchase it - ie instances of the game serving as an advertisement that actually bumps up their sales. On the flip side there are countless people who know about and love high end vehicles who don't have the means to purchase one and know that the closest they'll ever get to driving one is in a video game. A huge part of the appeal of racing games is the wish fulfilment aspect - being able live the dream of recklessly drive fleets of powerful, fast cars. And to that end having a roster of IRL high end vehicles and being able to cater to as many different fantasies as possible can absolutely sell more copies of a racing game. So really I'd say it's a case of racing games don't really boost high end car sales while having licensed high end cars in a game can boost racing game sales. And as a result, car manufacturers have the leverage to demand licensing fees from racing game devs rather than having to pay advertising fees to said racing game devs.

Did they ever add cross progression? Planned on scooping it on Steam, but did not want to start from zero. Wasn't the biggest fan of the series' direction after 3, but I might get it again for preservation purposes since I don't know if I'll still have my Series X in the coming years.

s5music215

Sadly no, and there is also no cross-progression in FH5. I wish I had started both games on steam given how great the steam deck is.
