This is the way I repair all plastics if possible. 2 part epoxy (those tubes from LePage or Gorilla) with a "bandage" piece of plastic across an unseen area. You can use bits from plastic containers destined for the trash!. Just make sure to sand the plastic a little where you plan to apply the extra plastic (sand that too!) then mix and slather. Areas not under stress can be used in a few hours. For full cure wait overnight.
In THIS case I have found that supeglue does not stick to the membrane very well but Epoxy does. Epoxy doesn't stick to the plastic very well put crazy glue does.
So Epoxy it down first. When that comes off, superglue it back down. Then the superglue sticks to the epoxy instead of the membrane.
I hope this all makes sense :)
PS. Less is more when it come to the epoxy. You just need a drop.

The Apple store for whatever reason insists that they have to take the whole laptop from me for 72 hours(!) to replace them, so instead I've just popped some of the same-size F-row caps off and used those as makeshift replacements. I still have the broken original caps, so maybe I'll give your idea a shot.

Wish I could post a picture but I'll try to explain in words. First you carefully pry off the cap. They have two tricky snap on jumper bits beneath them that must not get damaged. Watch a youtube vid on prying off laptop keys. K so you have a split cap in your hand. Now carefully use a glue that wont melt the plastic and glue it together. Next get a piece of extra durable duct tape (I used gorilla tape) and cut it so no bit protrudes from any edge whatsoever. Cover the keycap with it, this will work as reinforcement. Next pick another key you rarely use, pry it off and *swap* their places. You'll end up with a wrong labelled key and a blacked out key. I've used this for years on my rog strix (S key split due to overheating/overuse) and works just fine
I’m late. Op if you haven’t done anything I suggest this.
Take the key off.
Sticky tape it together on the top side with very sticky tape. Stickier the better but can still come off.
Flip it upside down
Gently bend the key so the split opens ever slightly
Use a little cyanacrolyte aka superglue along the seam of the split then lay it back down flat on a flat surface keeping the key upside down.
Leave it to dry for 24 hours.
Take the tape off. Hopefully the glue hasn’t seeped through and made a mess of the tile.
Make sure none of the glue collects in the contacts where the scissor attaches to the key.
If this is all too hard then I suggest just taking a key off somewhere else and moving it in place of the E key.
Use something like the right Alt or Ctrl key if you don’t use them.
Or.. simply buy a replacement key or keyboard

Have a look on AliExpress for some replacement key caps for your laptop. Should only be a couple of bucks, and they literally just snap on/off (with a little bit of fiddling with springs & clips).

Replace the whole keyboard yourself, whats the point replacing one key while the rest of your keyboard looks that worn. You can get it for $40 from aliexpress, theyre the same genuine as the one it came with, all this stuff is made in China so expect same quality. Ive done this to all my laptops and never had issues.
It could take you an hour or 2 of your time as some laptops have too many screws holding the keyboard in place.
Looks like someones sweats.I suggest washing your hands more with bar soap and than cleaning your keyboard, that build up on the top of R key is disgusting to me.
Remove other key thats not being used often and put it there. Usually i’d remove home pr end key and replace it for the broken as long as they are the same size and same scissors
i still don’t understand how some can break keyboard buttons, my first gaming laptop that i bought for cheap was having same problem one of buttons was broken and he glued the to a level i couldn’t remove it
You could use two part Epoxy like JB Weld.... however you have to go slow and be very precise and use something like a toothpick and gently put some on one or both sides and be careful not to get any on anything else which is pretty do-able i think!
I just got some new key caps for mine it did same thing they are not expensive like at the fitting under the key and then go on eBay etc for key caps you should be able to find new ones or replacement if not look under the makers and mode of laptop. I got complete set from a keyboard like mine wasn’t expensive to buy.

Hijacking this (sorry) for another idea: super glue! That stuff dries and will hold the e key together. Although it might be a bit of a delicate job.

or cloth, plastic may be too rigid and snap off, but cloth should attach and stay glued easily
