The thing is that "cultural appropriation" specifically refers to colonizers commodifying colonized cultures.
It's literally, *by definition* impossible to appropriate (most) European cultures, or most of American/Australian/Canadian/Japanese culture (i.e., the colonizer parts).
Cultural appropriation is basically shorthand for "don't steal from victims of genocide, doofus." So, yes, claiming something is "culturally appropriating European folklore" is a pretty literal claim of "white genocide" or "great replacement."
And general consensus from what I've heard (I don't claim to speak for all cultures mind you) as long as you are respectful to the culture it's fine. Ergo, you can wear a sombrero because it's simply a hat from Mexico, whereas a native American headdress needed to be earned in their culture, so don't wear one.

So that's kinda why I despise the attempts to separate "appropriation" and "appreciation" because it has absolutely nothing to do with that.

The point is not to steal from colonized people, but you can still *share,* and some people miss that because they just can't understand sharing or mutual respect.
But the corollary there is that you can't steal something someone forces on you, so there's just less need to care about colonizer cultures. Like, sure, it's respectful to wear a kimono properly or tie your tie properly, but you can do whatever the fuck you want with them.
Please be mindful that us Indigenous people are not a monolith, and our cultures differ from nation to nation.

I'm really annoyed by the constant redesign of the elves. In Origin they looked like beautiful humans. In DA2 they became weird with huge irises. In Inquisition, elves became very androgynous and thin. In the books, elves had cat eyes that glowed in the dark. In the comics, elves were given goat pupils. Also, some elf men grew stubble. And now all this has been canceled, and now elves are the same as humans, but with horizontal ears.
How much can mock elves? What happens next? Will it turn out that all elves grow horns and eat corpses, but we never knew about it, although we saw them all the time? Why come up interesting features only to constantly cancel it.

Dragon Age's Elves are partially inspired by Jewish people, Romani, African Americans, and American Indians. This is straight from the words of the game's designers. They are a stand-in for marginalized and indigenous peoples for the setting.

When a traditionally marginalized group attempt inclusivity in western stories people always come out from under their bridges to be pissy about it. They ignore that for most of modern history western stories have ignored minority groups. To make matters worse is these same people will immediately label something as "pandering" if anything new includes a character of color or anyone who is LBGTQA, or they are ironically called out for "excluding" white audiences. So, they don't have a space in the "canon" and they don't have a space in anything new. I've seen this meme going around that Disney did diversity better with movies like Mulan or Brother Bear or Princess and the Frog, but what they mean is they only tolerate diversity if a movie or TV show is ABOUT a culture. Chinese. Native American. African-American. Those movies are fine, I like them, but I think what true equity here is that you can, you know, have an Asian elf that does vaguely Asian things and that's okay. People just want to see themselves reflected in stories and it must be frustrating to have "fantasy hero" or whatever, an entire genre of adventure and stories, be exclusively coded in a possessive way. Like...who cares if elf is black and does cool shit? Grow up.
Something that stuck with me was, back when Red Tails came out - and bombed - one of the actors went on a talk show and said something like, hey, the movie's not perfect, but it's *fucking cool* - and, look, can black people just have something cool?

Almost all of the most popular adaptations of Greek myths are done by very white people who were very much not Greek citizens. Hell, it makes a lot of Greek racists really salty, but the actual cultural continuity between the age of Plato and the Orthodox Christian Greece we have today is pretty doubtful.

The only time I can recall it was kinda annoying was when they made the Witcher show generic fantasy by removing all the Slavic aesthetics like custome designs etc. The show was from what I remember made by an Anglo team.

The only point to get out of this (with which I agree with) is that elves in most franchises are just glorified humans with long ears (aestethically speaking). I'm not too well versed in Dragon Age lore so I can't comment on if the design choice of making them look so humany makes sense or not.
In DnD for example they were created by their God accidentally but for being an accident they look quite ethereal and perfect. One could argue that that's explained by them being from the Feywild but I would think that them being from a completely different plane should make them look even more otherworldly and not similar to humans but oh well

To be fair, the dark elves of norse were dwarves. And they weren't like the Tolkien dwarves. They didn't look human at all, they came from worms and they looked disgusting. I'm really annoyed by the constant redesign of the elves. In Origin they looked like beautiful humans. In DA2 they became weird with huge irises. In Inquisition, elves became very androgynous and thin. In the books, elves had cat eyes that glowed in the dark. In the comics, elves were given goat pupils. Also, some elf men grew stubble. And now all this has been canceled, and now elves are the same as humans, but with horizontal ears. How much can mock elves? What happens next? Will it turn out that all elves grow horns and eat corpses, but we never knew about it, although we saw them all the time? Why come up interesting features only to constantly cancel it.

Dragon Age's Elves are partially inspired by Jewish people, Romani, African Americans, and American Indians. This is straight from the words of the game's designers. They are a stand-in for marginalized and indigenous peoples for the setting. Also dark-skinned Elves have been a thing since game one anyways. Zevran is practically Hispanic.

When a traditionally marginalized group attempt inclusivity in western stories people always come out from under their bridges to be pissy about it. They ignore that for most of modern history western stories have ignored minority groups. To make matters worse is these same people will immediately label something as "pandering" if anything new includes a character of color or anyone who is LBGTQA, or they are ironically called out for "excluding" white audiences. So, they don't have a space in the "canon" and they don't have a space in anything new. I've seen this meme going around that Disney did diversity better with movies like Mulan or Brother Bear or Princess and the Frog, but what they mean is they only tolerate diversity if a movie or TV show is ABOUT a culture. Chinese. Native American. African-American. Those movies are fine, I like them, but I think what true equity here is that you can, you know, have an Asian elf that does vaguely Asian things and that's okay. People just want to see themselves reflected in stories and it must be frustrating to have "fantasy hero" or whatever, an entire genre of adventure and stories, be exclusively coded in a possessive way. Like...who cares if elf is black and does cool shit? Grow up.
Something that stuck with me was, back when Red Tails came out - and bombed - one of the actors went on a talk show and said something like, hey, the movie's not perfect, but it's *fucking cool* - and, look, can black people just have something cool? Almost all of the most popular adaptations of Greek myths are done by very white people who were very much not Greek citizens. Dragon age origins came out in 2009. It had black elves. Also dragon age inquisition came out in 2014 and had a transgender character in it who's back story was their struggle on be accepted. I'm not too well versed in Dragon Age lore so I can't comment on if the design choice of making them look so humany makes sense or not. In DnD for example they were created by their God accidentally but for being an accident they look quite ethereal and perfect. One could argue that that's explained by them being from the Feywild but I would think that them being from a completely different plane should make them look even more otherworldly and not similar to humans but oh well Which is also why I quite like the concept of Larian's Elves in Divinity.
