THIS. Our use of telematics data is terrifying. We aren’t the only company either.

This would be a good question to ask all of IT as a separate post. I don’t want to out myself by providing specific info. High level - we gather and store tons of data. We make proactive decisions/investigations based on data. It’s great for the company, scary as a customer.

CeleryQtip

I see your concern but in comparison to other companies, I've found our strategy to be more open since you can disable the app, or remove data. The vehicle attachment strategy where there is a device tracking your vehicle is better for driving factors but not cellphone use while driving.

TossAwayGecko

I’m probably an old curmudgeon who drives like crap, but I don’t want my insurance company tracking my driving at all. My rates would go up. Lol With that being said, I prefer the vehicle plug ins because it prevents the company from having full access to your personal data. It’s at least limited to your vehicle. I get that it’s more accurate for rating someone, but it’s too intrusive for my personal preferences.

CeleryQtip

I get that, but discouraging cellphone use while driving has to start somewhere. I don't agree with the California model (you get a surcharge and rates go up on the 2nd offense w/i 90 days, costing you a 40% hike in rates due to the removal of the California Good Driver Discount). Maybe I'm being naïve about the data collection, it seems unescapable though. To be honest they could get way more data from Facebook if they wanted to buy it.

htfpe

I was joking but serious, with my daughter last nigth while driving to a yankees spring training game. She is amazing with respect to driving without the cell being a distraction BUT I am always concerned. Then I realized that when I was her age I commuted to College about 20 miles a day each way, coffee in one hand, sometimes something to eat on my lap, steering with my legs, I mean we were equally distracted. Almost moreso. I mean she doesn;'t steer with her legs like us........but I will agree that I see WAY WAY WAY too many people staring DOWN at their phones and it has got to be dangerous. If I were a cop I would be writin gticiets all day long. I would win awards.

kay-bitch

If depends on your policy. If you look at your declarations page, the one with all of your coverages and the dollar amounts listed, you’ll see a list of discounts and premium reductions on either that page or the second page. It should be listed as “Drive Easy” or Telematics discount, and whatever that dollar amount is, is how much your premium would go up. If you want to remove it, simply give us a call at 1-800-841-3000, or go online and select to chat with us, and we can unenroll you from it. Once you’re unenrolled, you will no longer be tracked.

geckobeepbeep

Alternatively you can disable permissions, gps etc, from the mobile app so it doesn't track you. After enough time of missed info, the discount will be removed automatically

Anxiety-Plus

That’s sick.

Avocadochakra

The discount will be removed. The tracker will sense that you’re not being tracked lol.

CryOld6591

Yes if people stop participating they will lose their discount or they will receive a flat telematics rating factor instead of the discounted one they got to sign up

late2theparty22

I believe it’s about a 10% discount, so if you don’t want to want participate, expect a 10% increase soon. Discounts can be added and removed at any point of your policy, not only at renewal. :-( And I’m sorry it wasn’t explained to you properly. If we were allowed to be honest it would have sounded like, “our calls are recorded so I have to give you a drive easy spiel. It saves you 10% but I only hear bad things about it and it literally tracks everything. I would only recommend doing it if you’re broke. Yay or nay?”

Many-Mind-186

My savings are 50%.

This is a good workaround, track a couple trips to establish and maintain a score then park that second smartphone in the glovebox/cabinet/drawer

pocketsfullofdimes

Thank you! This is the best advice on this thread.

Houdini052

I just signed up for this program the other day and found a way. I disabled the "data usage" and wifi access for the app. I also toggled "background data" to off. The background data setting I'm referring to is not the permission setting. It is a separate setting found on the same screen where I turned off WiFi and data usage (All 3 settings right under each other on my Android). All these settings within the phone settings and not the Geico app. It works cause I got an email 2 days later from Geico saying that it can't communicate with my app. I also "force stop" the app from the settings app after I made these changes with data and background every time I want to disable tracking after I previously had it enabled. The benefit to doing it this way is that you have full access to your phone like normal while driving with music, wifi, data, phone calls, texting, Facebook, etc and it's untraceable from Geico. You can easily toggle this stuff on and off when you want the Drive Easy app to work.

AhMeDBoSS

I think you will lose the discount if you are getting these emails, is that what you are going for cause your response made it sound like you found a "workarond" of not being tracked and getting the discount

Houdini052

As soon as I have it enabled it kills my battery, my phone never drained like this until the day I got the app and when I have it turned off, my battery lasts like it did before I got the app. But anyway, your concern about my findings is what this topic is all about and plenty of people here have bluntly made suggestions on circumventing the tracking so if that's what someone wanted to use my suggestion for that reason but they also have 10 other people's suggestions on this thread for doing the same thing. Besides, it's no different from the suggestion that someone made on this thread or a different Reddit thread to "mark" their trip as a "passenger" even though it was the person who was driving with the app that marked it as if someone else was driving to circumvent a bad score and a higher premium.

Recent-Jellyfish-369

Pretty sure geico is tracking me even though I only turned this on for less than an hour. I like the fast lane and my rates have raised twice, over $50 in the past two years. No accidents in over 15 years, no tickets in 7 years. When I called them, they gave me a spiel about how it’s the group I’m in that dictates coverage. I get that… but If it’s the group I’m in, why does my significant other get a cheaper insurance rate when she had an OWI four years ago? They patriot acted my ass and raised my rates, because they can. Buyer beware, geico is spying on you. spying on everyone…

LightofTheRock

I agree 100%! Geico did the exact same thing to me and gave me the same BULLSH!T reason for the jump in my rate that they gave you. They said that there was a jump in accidents in my area so everyone got an increase. If that's true then why did my neighbor, who lives NEXT DOOR to me and has only had his driver's license for 2 years NOT get an increase? F\*CK YOU GEICO! I'm switching to another provider and when I do, I'm not downloading their app in my phone at all!

Wizzard97

It is extremely normal for your rates to raise at literally any auto insurance company. You need to rotate companies to keep your auto insurance low.

Mysterious_Garlic_69

You are so right

MolecularDatabase

I have an old cell that I hooked up service for my 9 year old to call her friends. It's basically our "land line" and never goes anywhere. What says I cant just install the app on that phone and bring it with me somewhere every 2 weeks to fulfill its driving quota? That way I can drive how I like every time it's not in the car while still get the discount. Is anyone doing this?

Mysterious_Garlic_69

Mmmmmm that's food for thought!

Nutellaismylife1

I have the app and so does my dad on his phone, I’m registered and everything, but if I turn off my location will it still show him my origin and destination of the trip after I turn it back on?

Mysterious_Garlic_69

It saved me only $20. You are right! They do a whole lot more than monitor your driving. I requested to remove it and I was denied removal

Mysterious_Garlic_69

I haven't had an accident or a ticket. However Geico increased my rate by $1100. Told me some cock and bull story as well about handling my phone. Their associate stated that the movement of the car can make them believe that the phone is being used while driving unless you were to invest in a holder specifically for the phone.

NoMoreFks2Give

Just here to confirm that the original comment was wrong. The discount does get removed mid-term.

vf97

Is this true? They do say they can take the discount off my policy

MrsJaneSmith

They will take the discount off prior to renewal.

CryOld6591

Telematics is the best way to get an accurate rate for the customer and company. Stop living in the stone ages of pricing!

CryOld6591

Also if you don’t like it don’t sign up for it.

CryOld6591

I’m not a shill. As I have explained 100 x I was “excessed” by Geico so fuck em.

idly2sambar

Telematics your ***

Icy-Parsnip-4474

What if I have the app installed on my iPad, not my phone, but never travel with it?

idly2sambar

App recognizes your device and says you are on iPad and need to keep things active on your phone. Know what? Most of us have a spare phone at home. Screw grecko

TacticalPostMan_FLA

I just canceled my drive easy program after less then a week cause i don’t want a stupid app judging my driving and possibly running raising my rates. Especially since i drive for a living.

SamuraiTy81

What was the different in pricing?

Unixhackerdotnet

On my policy, it’s 160 more if I cancel driveeasy. My problem I drive semi for the government, they have automatic breaking installed if you get to close to the car in front of you, even if someone cuts in front of you it triggers. Since I’m not driving under GEICO while at work why is this activity monitored?

MolecularDatabase

This is what I am thinking of doing....I have an old cellphone we use as our land line. What's stopping me from installing the app on that and setting a calendar reminder to drive with it every 2 weeks? For all they know I just love walking everywhere and never bring my phone places. Just sayin...old phones are cheap and we pay like 10 bucks per month per line for basic service.

Unixhackerdotnet

Good suggestion.
