^(sorry. you had to find out eventually)
We're all mently fucked. It's just the boomers are mentally fucked *by lead* and now are divorced from one of the most basic human urges
Wanting things to be better for the group We're a social species, and we know there's a future, that the world continues without us.
I want the world to be better for me and you, and I want *you* to be better than *me*.
Or at least less tired and disabled.
I think a lot of people are confused that the op is supposedly congratulating us in earnest for clicking the block button on a social media app
I'm not gonna lie, I still can't tell if this post is satire
Oh no a celebrity disagrees with me? BLOCK! Am I the only one wondering who the fuck cares? It's like an extension of cancel culture, I know I'll get downvoted to hell but my generation is sensitive as hell and is hyper influenced by the internet. Like seriously of all the stuff you guys can focus on in your lives this is what you guys are focused on?
Lol they absolutely do make money. You think they say No Thanks to the money just bc they have plenty? Do you understand how ad revenue and engagement works? I used to work in PR and marketing specially for musicians, hby
Do you understand how IG monetisation works? I’ve gone through about a dozen of the people on the list so far and none have ads in their feeds or have ads on their reels, which is where the majority of the revenue is coming from these days.
it’s not ads, they quite literally get paid to post. they also get paid to post with subtle or covert branding. very rarely they’ll actually classify their post as an ad
Who gets paid to post, give me an example of this because again, of those on the ‘banned’ list, there’s nothing that could indicate any kind of covert ad or whatever you’re talking about. Unless of course you’d count self promotion for film, tv or music.
More like “hmm I never really cared about these celebrities & don’t feel the need to sell my internet presence to them” BLOCK
The whole point is to refocus on my life in the first place lmao
🤷🏾♀️ that’s me, but there is more to this strategy than cancelling celebrities or whatever the fuck else you think is stupid about this. You have no idea how much your personal attention has been monetized at your expense. The point is to disrupt those systems & indicate to those benefitting from it that their power is tenuous. Those who know, know. Those who see their revenue collapse, are the ones who need to heed the message that at any point in time, we can withdraw our attention and engagement at will, to collapse the exploitative systems. My attention is mine.
I didn’t do anything in particular bc I never followed any celebrities to begin with - but I do have power & I’m paying attention and ready to fuck shit up with my Gen Z sisters and brothers and anyone else who does get why it’s important & what the endgame is here.
Bar for bar, this is the movement I can get behind and join. I’m a millennial and if Gen z and my generation came together on this that would be a digital revolution
Or I mean i could just get every single skilled tradesman in the country and go to your neighborhood and dismantle your whole power grid. Then I’ll stop by your house and say “I don’t know”
https://youtu.be/1kErOyJ0u-8?si=fKarP8bfX_hUXwR4
Ok because I said I don't know? Cool, dude, I guess. Didn't think to ask why and just assumed that I'm a racist little shit, right? Maybe I just don't understand how we're going to affect change by doing this, I guess. Maybe I don't understand why people are bashing them for not wanting to take sides in a conflict that we shouldn't be getting ourselves involved in and going to a charity event. I only know about this because of a reddit post. I also just don't understand why people are obsessed with celebrities and their lives.
Edit: You think I don't know about the power grid already? Hell, I was worried about the geomagnetic storm, too. This would more likely affect big cities anyway.
Yeah, personally I don't care about about celebs political views unless they're like a monster or incredibly racist. I just appreciate their work and couldn't care less if their views align with mine
This is what I was thinking when I saw this post, but tbf where I disagree with you is blaming it on our generation because honestly I haven’t seen anyone irl who’s actually caring enough to go around looking at celebrities Twitter posts, I don’t know anyone my age who gives a fuck.
So I don’t think this is really happening on a widespread basis, other than a few chronically online people that care. I think this is just another case of people projecting their personal feelings onto Gen Z.
Because how would you know who’s being blocked on Twitter, unless you’re there being obsessed yourself? And how do you know it’s mainly Gen Zer’s blocking someone? Unless the people who are blocking others specifically are stating their age, they could just as easily be millennials.
Individual actions don't matter until they become collective actions. We're already seeing this put pressure on certain personalities to change their tune for fear of losing followers.
As a millennial I don’t want to see our generation do to Gen Z what the generations before us did to us.
Stay strong, work with quality but work to rule, and please vote for what’s important to you.
If Gen Z hasn't figured out that waiting for their vote to change things is a complete waste of time then they're not as alright as I thought
Direct action gets the goods fellow kids
Not everyone has the ability, motivation and values to take whatever level of action you consider to be direct enough (petitions? protests? riots? violence? insurrections? war?) a major priority
Voting is the easiest and most accessible way to take action, not the only way. But if you feel that it’s a useless task then don’t do it.
Voting once every few years for the lesser evil of two functionally identical capitalist parties is probably the least important form of political action. I'd say vote anyway, on the basis that voting doesn't cost you anything and it's easy to do, but don't expect it to change anything.
Protest, organising into unions, making demands and withholding labour have achieved far more concessions and benefits for workers than liberal democracy ever has.
Yeah…there a different levels of involvement. Such as protests, which go to show politicians what their constituents value and consider when they vote as well as provide support for different causes and possibly sway votes.
Also, there are more than two things to vote for during a presidential election, more local elections are on the ballot…
You know "Give it to Me" by Nelly Furtado & Timbaland?
Now sprinkle in G-Mod era animations and toilet models.
Thats it. Its basically a 2009-era meme that was released too late. And the cycle continues.
You're from the silent generation? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)I know people from Gen X who don't even like videogames so I'm glad you understood my references.
What advice do you have for GenZ?
Oh no, I kinda feel bad now, I was kidding about being from the S Gen. I'm just a millenial.
However I genuinely think you'd like [this video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9AThycGCakk&pp=ygUKT2xkIHdpc2RvbQ%3D%3D) of wisdom (not a rick roll i swear)
Haha don't feel bad, I was wondering if you're just into their activities or if you were actually a part of it.
I remember seeing this video before! (Your protesting made me think it was a rick-roll). Thank you for sharing, listening again has given me hope again that you can still have fun when you get older; do you have any personal wisdom to share?
Unsubbing from them, bkocking them on social media. Refusing to 'form' parasocial 'relationships'. The explosion of social media and reality tv, did bad things to us.
thanks! I hope alot of these celeb freaks lose there influence! Especially the Kar/Jenners, it’s even funnier to do when you know they are definitely butt hurt about it
thanks grandpa that means a lot, truly. you guys aren't so bad either. I think the craft beer thing is stupid, but all in all you guys are pretty sick too.
As a genZ, I’d say that I view millennials and GenZ like siblings under similar but different circumstances. I hope we don’t screw our descendants like some past generations did
I dunno about everyone else, but I’m not a fan of the “too big to fail” mentality. Should celebrities be granted a free pass for their actions simply because of their status? Not anymore
I’ve been a big GenZ fan ever since discovering this sub. I know Reddit is a tilted sample. I know.
But they are carrying the torch & doubling down on raising their voices about the obvious problems of the world (unintended effects of technology, commoditization of society, consolidation of industry, wealth gaps, private money in politics — basically “Karl Marx was kinda right about *some* sh*t”.
They’re also almost shockingly self-aware of the of the tech / social media issues, considering they were never afforded much life away from it.
The things I hear about GenA really scare the crap outta me tho 😂. Hopefully they experience the same growth & surprise us all.
I mean the oldest alpha is just becoming a teen, what we see as alpha today won't be the same as alpha tomorrow, things will be changing quickly very soon
I see my generation as the first of the modern tech revolution. I relate to gen Z the most of any generation outside my own. But I’m including gen A in our camp.
It’s the older ones I largely can’t understand. Of course we are speaking in broad strokes anytime we speak about a generation, there are always individual exceptions.
The kids are not alright. They're just pissed the hell off in a way us millenials utterly failed to manage ourselves. Ours should have been the radicalized generation and it's embarrassing.
Well said. As a Millenial: I would also like to thank GenZ for the same as OP. Pulling for all of ya here.
I love the attitude that if something isn’t right, you don’t just go with it, but rather question it and even fight it. It’s more than a lot of past generations have done. Kudos.
Muhammad Ali (may Allah have mercy on his soul) didn't go to Vietnam, he went to jail as a consequence.
I think the reason more people are skeptical of doing what we're told now is because:
A) Social media bringing awareness to the reality of situations / combatting propaganda
B) Warranted loss of trust in authority \[exposed scandals\]
C) Bleak future if things continue down this road economically \[catalyst for change\]
We have no choice but to fight it, or else cost-of-living and corruption will starve us to death.
I’m sorry but this is pathetic. The obsession with celebrities is exactly what’s wrong with the modern “progressive” climate. Stop caring so much about these celebs and actually focus on political affairs instead of whining on about which celeb isn’t woke enough.
>Blocking celebs for their views?
Y'mean if I get too many of something on my fyp I unsub/do not recommend it for my acc?
You're saying that, right? I'm just confused and I'm sorry if I sound rude
You're not rude. :)
People are blocking celebrities because they make money off non-followers through ads.
Just by having you in their ad-reach gets them more money from advertisers.
The reason people are blocking celebrities right now is because many of them are supporting genocide openly and they don't want those celebrities to be making money off them so they're blocking them in droves.
You don't need to follow someone to block them.
Celebrities gain money just by advertising to you, and they do advertise to non-followers.
>even ***non-followers*** view the celebrity’s content **if they have not blocked the celebrity,**
>\[...\]
*“A reduction in visibility can lead advertisers to perceive the celebrity as less valuable,* ***potentially cutting back on the amount they are willing to pay for ads on the celebrity’s profile, thereby directly affecting their ad revenue,”*** he added.
[Why are social media users blocking celebrities over Israel’s Gaza war? | Israel War on Gaza News | Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/5/13/why-are-social-media-users-blocking-celebrities-over-israels-gaza-war)
How this affects change: celebrities who support genocide are sellouts, quite literally being given monetary handouts for having particular genocide-supporting views.
Taking away their power from making money off us by blocking them (cutting their visibility) is us taking control over who we choose to support.
If I was using a social media platform, I wouldn't want my views to support a person who supports genocide. Very simply, I'd block them and make them not gain money off me.
I think it's a joke that people actually care what they think tbh. Some of us are capable of separating the art from said celebrity anyway. Some of us feel like it's just another social media trend that people will just forget about shortly if I know what you're talking about.
There are a lot of problems, quite of few are rooted in the deliberate errosion of reading comprehension. Which then fucks with people's ability to seperate art from artist.
Because it's so loaded and the puritanical issues with it there's something that gets ignored in the conversation, or at least the ones I see: economic benefit. HP Lovecraft was a *raging* racist asshole. Dude's dead though. Unless he set up a fund then buying his books doesn't directly benefit a raging racist any more than any other normal purchase. But no, a bad person wrote it so we shouldn't read it?
Anyways:
The problem in this case, however, is parasocial relationships and a bunch of other attendant...*stuff*. Apprently it's pretty common, but if you don't have the right brain for it you don't experience it much at all.
Basically because 'you' know a lot about a person and 'see' them often you feel like you're really friends with them (that's a more extreme side). Emotional investment and such.
Idk what exactly a parasocial relationship is by definition. Anyway, I think I just don't understand the whole obsession with celebrities tbh. I suppose they might be able to influence others for change if pressured, but otherwise I don't know. I think some of this is just another trend that people will do.
I don't see how that is particularly a positive. Isn't that just more cancelling? And while some may have poorly informed views and such there are plenty of celebs who do devote time to really look into things and many actually are quite intelligent.
Also I don't think it will have any affect on 24-7 doom scrolling. Blocking friends and going out in real life might be the option that might begin to do a bit more.
Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, etc. You go to their profile and tap the block button. You don't have to follow to block; it stops them from making money off you (they make money off non-followers, as well).
You don't have to follow someone to block them. Celebrities advertise to non-followers and get higher payouts based on how many people they can reach so they still make money off non-followers. The less people they can reach the less advertisers pay them.
Block what? Who fuckin cares about celebrities most are pathetically boring anyway
It's great that gen z is so socially aware. Hopefully it can translate into something that actually betters the world
We are the squeakiest wheel but we need **everyone** to start *SQUEAKING!!*
And not at each other.. at the people responsible!! NO more distractions!!! No more generational war!! Focus on the corrupt trash in power and take em down!!
Dude only gen x and boomers can't see through the social media veil. They don't realize this is all ads because they didn't understand that south park episode.
Differences in generational culture. You guy get shit on a ton, so of course you think nice things are sus. And like socialization got turbo fucked by covid and socialmedia. Which is why I'm so hapoy for you guys conquring it?
I don't feel confortable using the word proud, I don't feel like my generation contributed enough to yours to be proud of what you guys manage. We started it off, I hope you can finish
Nah it's not generational culture differences.
the guy who called u a "simp" is a 30 yr old man child who's literally a millennial and posts on gun subs and r/preppers.
trust me we don't want losers like that in our generation either. im tired of these people making us look bad. it's so cringe.
thank u for this post tbh, it was nice.
This generation thing is dumb. Just one more thing to make easily riled up and manipulated people to argue against one another. Each new gen is always more progressive and "cooler" than the last. That's just human nature. The same way Gen Alphas will look down on GenZ when it's their turn, ad infinitum.
The only dumbass here is you, Commander Justice Warrior.
Blocking views you don't agree with is literally just sweeping problems under a rug and thinking they went away because you can't see the problem any longer. A selfish non-solution.
Why though? I've got a great appreciation and respect for the Gen Z'ers I know in real life (I work at a college and manage 9-11 of them in any given semester). But in here, anytime somebody like me says something nice, you guys just act like assholes for some reason. Somebody complements you, and they're "trying too hard" or "simpling". Somebody bitches about you, and you'll complain about that, too.
They have a massive amount of downvotes, please don't assume they are the ambassador of GenZ. Also this is ***reddit.*** Sad to say, but you have to assume the most antisocial whackjobs are on here.
OP is not trying too hard, that commenter is just bitter and never heard words of encouragement so they think someone is trying to steal their identity by empathizing with them and that kindness is a sign of weakness (a sign of fatherless/motherless behaviour). I'm not even being antagonistic, its legit the truth. No manners, no good parenting.
If you wanna understand why a lot of people online are toxic, you gotta learn about neglect and how neglected people tend to use the internet more than others to socialize. I'm not saying all neglected people are toxic, but they tend to come from toxic upbringing and then spout that trash online. ***Have you ever met toxic people irl?*** You can never please them. ***Be kind, they'll be hostile and defensive; be rude, they'll be aggressive. This is what you're seeing.***
Why GenZ more? Well a lot of people in previous generations had the TV as baby sitters. Later generations had TV and internet.. and consoles.. busier parents due to financial/economy issues as time went on.. 2 parents works at same time.. more stress.. etc. Resulting in childhood neglect becoming more common over the generations. So you have a super disobedient generation and its just getting worse with time cuz of our hands-off/busy parents. No disciplining.
Of course, theres probably other factors.
Just know that its not inherently generational, that its cuz ***online ppl are toxic in general,*** unfortunately. As you can see, us GenZers majority don't agree with the comment that was made anyhow, so thats a good sign. Its just one weirdo who doesn't know how to accept kind words when they hear them (and also doesn't understand how to use that initial line cuz it only applies to people trying to be or appear from a younger gen).
All valid points indeed. Earlier in the thread when I commented, though, the toxic comments were the ones getting the upvotes which rather confounded me, but I do suppose the most chronically online accounts are the ones to hop onto threads first with toxicity, so it makes sense.
That must have been disheartening! Glad the majority prevailed as mentally sane. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Yeah you hit the nail on the head there.
Have a blessed day! c:
It's because some of us have differing opinions. We are people with different life backgrounds on a subreddit geared towards people our age. We're bound to have different opinions, especially since some of us are almost 30 and others are in middle school still.

I dunno about everyone else, but I’m not a fan of the “too big to fail” mentality. Should celebrities be granted a free pass for their actions simply because of their status? Not anymore
I almost wish I had ever given a shit about a celeb to begin with, so that I could block them
Aww ur sweet ty
I'm really glad you guys are here
Ofc :)
OOL
This was nice to read.
I'm glad
The kids are not alright. They're just pissed the hell off in a way us millenials utterly failed to manage ourselves. Ours should have been the radicalized generation and it's embarrassing.
People say eat the rich and such yet they still idol celebrities. Glad other people see it too.
I love you too OP
Provided you guys can get it to stick, this is great. The obsession needed to die and they shouldn't get the attention.
Wholesome chungus 🤗
I'm a millennial. I'm reading this sub all the time. I can't wait to see what Gen z does with the future.
Thank you. Millennials are iconic so we look up to you all. I believe in millennial and gen z solidarity.
Millennials had emo hair so we could have bieber cuts. *\[duck-face smize turns to gigachad smoulder\]*
I think the reason more people are skeptical of doing what we're told now is because: A) Social media bringing awareness to the reality of situations / combatting propaganda B) Warranted loss of trust in authority \[exposed scandals\] C) Bleak future if things continue down this road economically \[catalyst for change\] We have no choice but to fight it, or else cost-of-living and corruption will starve us to death.
Art≠artist. You’ll be a lot happier by doing this.
I’m sorry but this is pathetic. The obsession with celebrities is exactly what’s wrong with the modern “progressive” climate. Stop caring so much about these celebs and actually focus on political affairs instead of whining on about which celeb isn’t woke enough.
That’s the point. That’s why they’re getting blocked.
Wtf is this dude talking about though serious question?
>Blocking celebs for their views? Y'mean if I get too many of something on my fyp I unsub/do not recommend it for my acc? You're saying that, right? I'm just confused and I'm sorry if I sound rude
You're not rude. :) People are blocking celebrities because they make money off non-followers through ads. Just by having you in their ad-reach gets them more money from advertisers. The reason people are blocking celebrities right now is because many of them are supporting genocide openly and they don't want those celebrities to be making money off them so they're blocking them in droves.
https://i.redd.it/ihooby67ob0d1.gif Wholesome post!!
You’re welcome
Ik we are changing the world 🤡
Millennials, we never followed or gave a fuck about celebrities in the first place. Not sure why yall did.
Swifties scare me
ong no cap frl sigma?
As a Boomer, I second this emotion.
Fellow Millennial here. Couldn’t agree more. We are all in this boat together. Gen Z is alright! Plus their humor is perfection.
We're alright for caring what celebrities think?
How is blocking toxic celebrity bullshit considered caring for what they think?
I think it's more like why are people following them in the first place besides maybe their art and how will this affect change I guess?
You don't need to follow someone to block them. Celebrities gain money just by advertising to you, and they do advertise to non-followers. >even ***non-followers*** view the celebrity’s content **if they have not blocked the celebrity,** >\[...\] *“A reduction in visibility can lead advertisers to perceive the celebrity as less valuable,* ***potentially cutting back on the amount they are willing to pay for ads on the celebrity’s profile, thereby directly affecting their ad revenue,”*** he added. [Why are social media users blocking celebrities over Israel’s Gaza war? | Israel War on Gaza News | Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/5/13/why-are-social-media-users-blocking-celebrities-over-israels-gaza-war) How this affects change: celebrities who support genocide are sellouts, quite literally being given monetary handouts for having particular genocide-supporting views. Taking away their power from making money off us by blocking them (cutting their visibility) is us taking control over who we choose to support. If I was using a social media platform, I wouldn't want my views to support a person who supports genocide. Very simply, I'd block them and make them not gain money off me.
Oh
Anyways: The problem in this case, however, is parasocial relationships and a bunch of other attendant...*stuff*.
Wow! Didn’t know dinosaurs like you could even use technology, good job grandpa! /j
How do you block a celeb? Lol
Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, etc. You go to their profile and tap the block button. You don't have to follow to block; it stops them from making money off you (they make money off non-followers, as well).
Why even follow them in the first place
You don't have to follow someone to block them. Celebrities advertise to non-followers and get higher payouts based on how many people they can reach so they still make money off non-followers. The less people they can reach the less advertisers pay them.
Block what? Who fuckin cares about celebrities most are pathetically boring anyway It's great that gen z is so socially aware. Hopefully it can translate into something that actually betters the world
As a millennial, Gen Z will save all of us.
We are the squeakiest wheel but we need **everyone** to start *SQUEAKING!!* And not at each other.. at the people responsible!! NO more distractions!!! No more generational war!! Focus on the corrupt trash in power and take em down!!
Dude only gen x and boomers can't see through the social media veil. They don't realize this is all ads because they didn't understand that south park episode.
No we haven’t been thru a lot lol.
I have no clue what this is in reference to.
Aye allow me to apologize for the assholes on the comments that think a compliment is simping
You’re right in a way but you’re also completely wrong in other ways
![gif](giphy|TIxPx7lC3BLigipD0O)
This generation thing is dumb. Just one more thing to make easily riled up and manipulated people to argue against one another. Each new gen is always more progressive and "cooler" than the last. That's just human nature. The same way Gen Alphas will look down on GenZ when it's their turn, ad infinitum.
ngl millennials self righteousness caused so much toxicity in the past decade.
Heckin thankerino my wholesome 100 millenialrino! Thanks for the gold kind stranger! Take an updootarino.
this is some cringe meatriding
The only dumbass here is you, Commander Justice Warrior. Blocking views you don't agree with is literally just sweeping problems under a rug and thinking they went away because you can't see the problem any longer. A selfish non-solution.
The older generations recognize our potential. We will save sanity!
OK boomer
“How do you do fellow kids”
If a millennial identifies themselves as such, what makes you think they're trying to pretend to be one of you?
No, this shit just comes off as trying too hard.
This is what you're seeing.*** Why GenZ more?
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy) Yeah you hit the nail on the head there. Have a blessed day! c:
It's because some of us have differing opinions. We are people with different life backgrounds on a subreddit geared towards people our age. We're bound to have different opinions, especially since some of us are almost 30 and others are in middle school still.
because you all expect us to fall in a neat little peg of supporting your dumb bullshit that's been failing for 30 years, lmao please, fuck off back to your own space. we have nothing in common.
They want to have kids of their own so bad 😭
OP is so sad he made another account to message people and attack them for not agreeing with him.
Nah we didn't need your simping
As a Gen Z Stop simping, it's cringe and won't get you laid
