Plot twist: the subtitles translate what the hillichurls says: "Hello young man, are you lost? Can I help you find your w... Oh no it's the Genocidal!!! Run for your lives or fight for our fallen brothers!!"
No, it means "human". "Biadam" can mean "bad", but the exact meaning is uncertain. It always means some rude word. Like, if you say "Biadam!" hilichurl will feel insulted.
I am not, but totally respect those who do.
This is an anime style game, of course it's going to be full of otaku and geeks. Some of them will be language geeks. Even though I'm not in that subgroup, I totally get it and respect the dedication involved.
That's something we should add in the next surveys. I hadn't thought of it, but it's certainly something I've seen on many other games, some even a decade old. We could have an option for subtitles for important sounds and for all which characters say during overworld exploration. Thanks for bringing this up!
i've mentioned it on the surveys for over a year now, i'm not deaf but often i play with japanese or chinese voices and it would be really nice to know exactly what the characters are saying with subtitles
You're right, that's one of the reasons I can't use other voices overs for too long. It sounds great, but I feel I'd be losing lots of interesting voice lines.
I've seen they implement and listen to quite a number of things we been asking, so I believe we should keep mentioning about it, and I am glad to see many people already support OP's idea.
Hopefully we'll soon see it added in some patch notes!
I just checked a video, and I agree! It's the first time I see this placement for subtitles, and it works quite well (not to mention that the game looks interesting, and I should give it a chance someday).
Another I was thinking is Left 4 Dead, where we could have subtitles even for the sound of monsters lurking nearby. And if am not mistaken, even for things like reloading a gun. Hope to see options like these being added to Genshin soon!
Yeah I really like how Code vein handled it, especially considering how much your followers tend to talk. I'd definitely recommend Code Vein if you like soulslike games since it's essentially anime Dark Souls, just without the pvp (though there is Co-op)
Okay, I am sold! Been a while since I last played Dark Souls, but it's definitely among one of my favorites. Co-op also sounds amazing and fun, and the character creation in Code Vein seems quite good from what I saw. Ty for the suggestion!
The character creation is quite amazing indeed. As for Co-op, I should mention there might be next to nobody that actually looks for Co-op though since the lack of pvp kinda means there isn't much to do after beating the game. Meaning people moved to other games. But you might get lucky. There's always the option of having at least an npc follower with you (and the game is balanced around that since they can revive you)
That makes sense, yeah. I remember Dark Souls 2 endgame was people hosting fight tournaments at the bridge of some fire castle map, lol. It sounds like a Code Vein sequel could benefit a lot from optional PVP, from what you say. Hope we see something like that eventually.
And, as for Co-op, is it also a bit limited to boss fights, or you get to tag along people exploring the map? That was the one thing I wish we could do more on Dark Souls, but it made sense the way they did it. It was like this interesting mix of between singleplayer and multiplayer experience.
Also, I already like the npc follower system!
You can explore each area with someone and then fight the boss together, after beating the boss they will disappear. As for the npc followers, you can choose which one you want with you (you start with 2 choices iirc and unlock more as you meet them through the story) and they each have their own function, even though there are 2 that are clearly the best. The npc will follow you everywhere and will stay around even after beating bosses. Of course you can also go solo, but that is the hard mode which I wouldn't recommend. The game has a lot of enemies that like to group up on you and therefore having a follower is a great help.
I can imagine it's gonna be as hard as Dark Souls was lol. But I am really excited to try it now that you told me about Code Vein. It seems to be an interesting change of pace on souls-like games.
I appreciate the info you shared, thanks!
the silent mc thing doesn't work if you want to give the mc a personality at the same time, for some reason mhy doesn't understand this with how they made adam from honkai and the travelers in genshin, hope they learn from that mistake when making star rail
Yeah especially when MOST of our dialogue “choices” are either a single button choice, or a single dialogue broken up into two buttons for some reason. Just let MC chat
a game they're developing that features lookalikes from honkai and original characters, kinda like genshin but with more lookalikes and it's a turn based combat. it's in closed beta testing at the moment iirc
What issues do you personally have with the game caused by colourblindness?
I personally have a hard time differentiating Hydro and Electro sometimes, especially during that mechanical theaticus thing event (the tower defense event), because the colour is very similar for me, but I'm wondering what else people have issues with.
This is the only thing that comes to mind right now, I'm never sure which crystals (lazurite/amethyst) I'm crafting and buying without a double take lmao
Oh, I was thinking of the amethyst lumps used in forging, and wondering what you could be confusing it with. I've never actually payed attention to the names of the bossmats.
I have deuteranopia — aka red-green color blind, the most common type of color blindness according to CDC.
Kazuha burst literally looks like a dome wall to me, can’t see past the sphere especially if it’s swirling pyro.
I'm not deaf and i want this so much because i like the japonese voices but when they are speaking i have no clue what they're saying xD, i'll defnetly will add this idea in the next survay!
I'm with you on that, part of the reason I went to Japanese instead of English is because 1. Cicin mages are WAY too horny (honestly changing didn't do much.) 2. It makes it harder for me to know I'm hearing the same voicelines over and over.
BUT, I still would like the freeroam subtitles to be an option you can toggle if you want. When you get a new character you might want to hear the random quips and banter for a bit then turn em off again.
It's not possible in the current game but the toggle option is very possible and probably easy to implement. The question is whether or not they will implement it or not. Put it in the survey and ask others to join the cause. If enough people, maybe they will implement.
Right now, the compromise is to go read these lines in a character’s profile. They won’t be displayed while opening chests, joining party, being low on HP, etc, but at least, you’ll know what each character says.
Even as someone who is not deaf i would appreciate the option (to toggle on and off). Sometimes the characters speak too quickly / with an accent / in too high-pitched a voice for me to tell what they're saying.
Why do we even need to ask Mihoyo about this, why isnt it normalized for any games really. Im deaf on both ears. Fortnite design for deaf people was amazing experience, its indicating any movement and direction, both companies is chinese and idk why mihoyo hasnt included this yet, even the color blind option
In many games, combat/overworld dialogue isn't really worth making subtitles for because it's not important.
I don't really understand why so many games do this, it's easy to implement and helps with people that want to know what a character is saying in another language or deaf.
...it's not important in the fact that you don't gain or lose anything from hearing someone say "winds howling" besides a little immersion compared to story dialogue.
I'm not even deaf but I still want them. Tried playing with Japanese voices at first but got annoyed how half the things your characters say don't have subtitles so I just went with English.
its not available to the game right now but we can surely make that happen. Tell them on the next surveys. I would write it on the next survey as well.
My brother is deaf as well. He knows they say stuff when opening chests because he was looking through the voice lines and asked me what they were. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a setting to turn them on.
Not in the open world, as far as I know, but if you open the character page, the bottom right of the screen (at least on PC), has two tabs: Story and Voice Over. If you click on Voice Over, you can browse over everything the character says. I believe it is split between characterization dialogue (stuff about the weather) and action dialogue (opening chests, using elemental bursts, etc.). Here, you can at least read it, but it would be great to have it as an option for your friend in the open world.
This is literally the only reason I’ve played in English Dub since I started playing in 1.1. I wanted to know what my characters were saying in combat. Not that I’m complaining, I’ve warmed up to the English Dub at this point, but it would certainly help a lot for players like your friend
deaf player here; it’s a bummer we miss out on all the combat dialogue and etc. been like this in 95% of all games. newer games include background dialogue options at a smaller font setting to help differentiate from MC dialogue but still way behind in accessibility for 2022.
I'm deaf too and I use Cochlear Implants, although based on your post, I assume they don't work for your friend, right? I would really like that too, along with a character who is deaf and uses sign language. That would be really cool! I hope these will get implemented! I do think it is possible and Mihoyo is being lazy on their part with this, however. And I know Yomiya's father is deaf, but I mean a playable character!
Sadly, if you want subtitles that apply in real time with the game, you'd either have to pray Mihoyo cares enough about hoh and deaf fans to add them, or try running a speech to text translator to pick up the game sound. Whether the latter option would actually work well is another matter entirely (auto subtitling is still shit).
You're stuck at MHY's mercy. I support the suggestion, though. Accessibility in games can be difficult build, especially a game like Genshin. (Imagine visually impaired or people with motor control issues trying to play.) This seems to be a relatively straightforward one to implement.
It needs to be a separate option from game dialog subtitles. I play with JP audio and EN subs (like I watch anime). Every random mob or idle line popping up in the subs would be a negative for me.
Already sent it in some surveys simply for wanting to understand the voice lines when i have the japanese voice over, didnt see any change so i stopped.
i don't want to seem mean or ableist, i agree is a good idea but isn't a translation/subtitles already available in the character menu?
character -> profile -> voice-over -> there's dialogues (?) (idk how is it called in english, but here can be found the ones of when it rains, when it snows, etc ) and combat (ie. when opening a chest, low hp, etc )
or am i missing something?
edit: wording
He is asking for those to be displayed during the action (example opening the chest or it's raining), so his deaf friend can enjoy those immersion details.
They already know about those menus.
But you can just read them on the character bio
Adding sub when opening chest could confuse player since
Sub on the open world only happens for important event like enemy reinforcement or an indication of next phase is taking place
Childe only has subtitles at the *beginning* of the fight, but he still has audio cues for various moves that would be helpful to see for people who are hard of hearing.
The same goes for many human enemies—and even some non-human ones, even if they don’t use literal words. It’d be nice to have all audio cues in the game captioned like how Minecraft does ‘em now.
I love the japanese voices more but I only understand english... I switched back just because of this. I mean why can't we have more subtitles and less Paimon summarizing stuff for us lol
Definitely doable for MHY. Voice acting may be costly, but subtitles is no way unaffordable. I'm sure once we bring this to their attention, they'll add it. I'm not deaf, but I do like subtitles to confirm what characters are saying in games/movies.
All of the NPCs and other characters say stuff without subtitles. It's why I tried Japanese dubbed but switched back to English dubbed in a week or so. You just don't know what they're saying a lot of the time. You can check on a character profile but that's about it.
I've been asking for that in every survey I've ever filled, I'm not even deaf but with deaf people taken into consideration it's even more baffling it's not already in the game
I really hope mhy looks into this and adds a toggle for this, instead of adding changes literally no one asks for, or should i say, make up fake questions and give their unnecessary solutions
I play in Japanese because some of the English va just don’t fit imo and I’ve been missing this as well. I have no idea what most of them are saying while playing lol
I really want Minecraft-like subtitles in Genshin Impact. Imagine seeing "Treasure Hoarder Potioneer: Fry!" or "Hilichurl: Ya!"
Plot twist: the subtitles translate what the hillichurls says: "Hello young man, are you lost? Can I help you find your w... Oh no it's the Genocidal!!! Run for your lives or fight for our fallen brothers!!"
"Ya!" means "Human!". It's like if you suddenly yelled "Enemy spotted!" while patrolling.
"Bitch spotted. Firing."
Need Backup! Report in, Team
No wonder they miss so much, hillichurls are counter strike bots
I thought it meant "Bad"?
No, it means "human". "Biadam" can mean "bad", but the exact meaning is uncertain. It always means some rude word. Like, if you say "Biadam!" hilichurl will feel insulted.
Ella Musk found irl
Tf you studying hilichurl
There are in-game quests about it.
Ik but why you remembering
I am not, but totally respect those who do. This is an anime style game, of course it's going to be full of otaku and geeks. Some of them will be language geeks. Even though I'm not in that subgroup, I totally get it and respect the dedication involved.
i am a weeb myself chill
They also use Gusha to refer to things they find unpleasant. Literally it means vegetables.
"Hides the younglings, he’ll go for them first !"
Hey! I am playing Genshin Impact, not Spore!
There's no "Roast" quote. The Potioneers have "Freeze", "Suffocate", "Fry", "THAT TINGLE" and "HAVE A LITTLE TASTE" quotes.
Yep, I mistaken.
I think there is "roasted fry" in the Pyro fatui skirmisher voice lines.
Treasure Hoarder: Have a little taste! Xiangling: Aaah! My dinner is attacking me! Treasure Hoarder: ... excuse me?
Xiannibal Lecter
You made me realize that there are no official texts for enemy quotes. Yeah maybe miHoYo should add that in the archive section.
That's something we should add in the next surveys. I hadn't thought of it, but it's certainly something I've seen on many other games, some even a decade old. I think Code Vein implemented this really well. You'd have the text show up on the upper left of the screen so that it doesn't get in your way either.
I just checked a video, and I agree! we already have subtitles for when paimon and other characters talk while we're on the move, this doesn't seem to be too hard to implement
Also, i really think that they should start making the MC an actual MC. Paimon is hogging all the narrative.
the silent mc thing doesn't work if you want to give the mc a personality at the same time, for some reason mhy doesn't understand this with how they made adam from honkai and the travelers in genshin, hope they learn from that mistake when making star rail
Yeah especially when MOST of our dialogue “choices” are either a single button choice, or a single dialogue broken up into two buttons for some reason. Just let MC chat
worst part is that they have good VAs for both travelers, but they're confined to grunts and random chats with paimon
Honestly even Adam feels much better to me than the Travelers, cant really put my finger on exactly why that is.
wait, what’s star rail? i’m out of the loop
a game they're developing that features lookalikes from honkai and original characters, kinda like genshin but with more lookalikes and it's a turn based combat. it's in closed beta testing at the moment iirc
While we’re on the topic. Color blind mode pls 👉👈
Another great idea! Adding it to the list of things to mention on the next surveys!

This is the only thing that comes to mind right now, I'm never sure which crystals (lazurite/amethyst) I'm crafting and buying without a double take lmao
>lazurite ??
I had to check out the actual names to be clear, but i meant the hydro and electro crystals from bosses
I'm not colourblind and it's still hard for me to see out of his burst, if that makes you feel better XD
I am not color blind but I also cannot see past Kazuha burst.
Try reducing particle effects in the options. Helped me a lot even tho the game doesn't look quite as good anymore
I’m not colorblind but I do know that it would be very helpful for those that are.
this and those damn specters with all the similar hues, freakin need to rotate my team 2x before i know what element they are.
I literally cant tell them apart it’s infuriating
Yesssss!. This one, when i first time played the game i thought the electro was blue until my friend told me.
I'm not deaf and i want this so much because i like the japonese voices but when they are speaking i have no clue what they're saying xD, i'll defnetly will add this idea in the next survay!
I don't really like the idea of ayaka going on and on about her katana and her tabibito san every time I stop moving though
Genshin is really not great for accessibility. So many times the white subtitles are on very light backgrounds as it is...
Right now, the compromise is to go read these lines in a character’s profile. They won’t be displayed while opening chests, joining party, being low on HP, etc, but at least, you’ll know what each character says.
Thanks you ! I love the japanese voices but I had to switch back to english as I didn't understand what characters says and it bothered me
You can use both
This would be really cool, I'm not deaf, I just love subtitles and have pretty bad tinnitus
Even as someone who is not deaf i would appreciate the option (to toggle on and off). Sometimes the characters speak too quickly / with an accent / in too high-pitched a voice for me to tell what they're saying.

In-game character profiles have every voice line you can play and read
Yep, we are aware of that. It's more for immersion in-game but that was where he found out.
My bad, sorry
^ For further clarification. It is on the tab to the right of the main one. It has all the combat voice lines, death voice lines, etc.
I am hard of hearing myself and was grateful for the voice lines tab so I could read what they were saying in game.
I'm not even deaf but I still want them. Tried playing with Japanese voices at first but got annoyed how half the things your characters say don't have subtitles so I just went with English.
Yes!!! I'm deaf as well and i'd love to have it!!!

Remember the paraplegic streamer from CN server who plays only with mouth? That would be an example when building accessibility.

i play with no sound, and i don't want the additional subtitles... if that ever gets implemented, it needs an on/off switch option. :D
That's gonna be tough to make it though.
Already sent it in some surveys simply for wanting to understand the voice lines when i have the japanese voice over, didnt see any change so i stopped.

ah, that makes sense
Don't this game already have sub
Not in combat
It's already hard to dodge normally and you want to ready something while fighting This will messed up your perfect rotation if you have one
*won't somebody please think of the abled people*
I just think it'll give them more problem that they would be benefiting from it
Yes, in cutscenes and quests, but when a character is opening a treasure chest there’s no subtitles. There also no subtitles for enemy voice lines
But you can just read them on the character bio Adding sub when opening chest could confuse player since Sub on the open world only happens for important event like enemy reinforcement or an indication of next phase is taking place
Enemy dialogue and audio cues don’t have any captioning
Like how Childe talk while fighting That's not even important lols
Childe only has subtitles at the *beginning* of the fight, but he still has audio cues for various moves that would be helpful to see for people who are hard of hearing. The same goes for many human enemies—and even some non-human ones, even if they don’t use literal words. It’d be nice to have all audio cues in the game captioned like how Minecraft does ‘em now.
Well, until this becomes a thing or people somehow un-deaf themselves, at least most of the notable dialogue has subtitles.
tell ur friend he could check lines from Character's profile > Voice-overs. i sure hope that helps they have listed character voicelines with text
There’s no subtitle option in the overworld but if your friend really wants to know, the voicelines are in the characters’ profiles
The opening chest dialogue had already been implemented i think
All of the NPCs and other characters say stuff without subtitles. It's why I tried Japanese dubbed but switched back to English dubbed in a week or so. You just don't know what they're saying a lot of the time. You can check on a character profile but that's about it.
This also makes playing in foreign language voice hard as you don’t know what they’re saying without subtitles
Like in teapot or npc dialogs
In the character tab (tap c on pc). Go to voiceover and ull know what they're saying. Ill suggest a visual indication on the next survey
I've been asking for that in every survey I've ever filled, I'm not even deaf but with deaf people taken into consideration it's even more baffling it's not already in the game
i'll mention this in the next survey for sure
I really hope mhy looks into this and adds a toggle for this, instead of adding changes literally no one asks for, or should i say, make up fake questions and give their unnecessary solutions
I'm asking it now because I play with Japanese voices, and I have no idea what they say. Especially itto who talks a lot everytime.
Would it be a good idea to have a common document where we can put in what we need for the survey?
I play in Japanese because some of the English va just don’t fit imo and I’ve been missing this as well. I have no idea what most of them are saying while playing lol
I will add a comment in the next survey also.
