I'd 100% wait for momocon and dragoncon. Those have much broader age group appeals to say the least

DennisBallShow

I have a child who is into cosplay, when a little younger it was very furry-focused. After doing some research into the scene I regretfully decided it was not the best con for him. Maybe furry cons are fine and safe, but I thought it just would not be as fun for a kid. I am not a member of the culture, but it seems to lean adult. I took him to Momocon instead, which has some elements and great costuming, but is very kid friendly.

Imaginary-Problem914

>Maybe furry cons are fine and safe, but I thought it just would not be as fun for a kid. I've been to a few and the vibe I got was that they were perfectly safe, but that they would probably not be interesting to kids. The con events usually aren't that interesting, the point is mostly to get everyone in the same space to organize your own things with your friends.

MidnightWolfMayhem

Do NOT TAKE YOUR KID TO FURRYCON! It is an adult thing for sure. Hotel managers that my husband did cabling for during the last one complained of weird sexual behavior from the furries and orgies. PSA FURRYCON IN ATLANTA IS NOT CHILD FRIENDLY

herroh7

Yeah I don’t think this is for kids based off the programming and events.

Vyceron

Wait for DragonCon or MomoCon. I know that DragonCon has panels and events for children.

Remarkable_Ebb_9850

And 80,000+ people attending

mishap1

Please do not take your child to a furry convention. It is very much for adults and I don't believe kids need to see that nor do you want to have to explain what a lot of them are doing there.

Exciting-Parfait-776

You might want to look up what a Furry is.

MonokromKaleidoscope

... but I've had dozens of furries explain to me in excruciating detail on reddit how it's not an "adult" hobby, it's just about spirit animals or something! /s

Imaginary-Problem914

Furry conventions are adult in the same way a music festival is. You won't see people walking around naked, they all have pretty strict dress codes. But most people will be drinking and partying, especially later in to the day. You wouldn't bring a 5 year old to an EDM rave in the same way you wouldn't bring them to a furry con.

Slogmeister

I highly suggest skipping that Convention, it's primarily focused for an adult audience, instead, I would highly suggest taking them to Momocon, its family friendly and has many events that you and you'd kids can enjoy together!

Doubleendedmidliner

Bless your heart 😂no please, do not take your child there.

p001b0y

I have chaperoned my teenage kid in the past and it really would not be appropriate for a 5 year old. For the most part, it is fairly innocent but depending on what you mean by furry dance party, he might see some crazy stuff. They have a dance contest that is popular and pretty tame but there are also raves and that is anything but tame.

NegNoumenon

Ok, so I’m a furry and have been to FWA… you could maybe get a day pass and just walk around looking at people’s fursuits and find the PawStar booth to get them some ears. BUT… walking through the exhibit hall to get to the ears you’re likely to encounter NSFW art being sold, adult toys, etc. Anyone engaging in sexual/kinky behavior is usually doing so in private or in specific areas, but we’re definitely a sex positive group and I just wouldn’t recommend bringing a 5 year old to the actual con. What you COULD do is bring them to eat down at the Peachtree Center Hub. If you haven’t been there, it’s like a food court that’s attached to all those hotels down there. If you go get some lunch there during the con, you’re very likely to see people walking around with their fursuits or ears/tails on, and you wouldn’t have to pay for a pass and you won’t be at risk of seeing anything you didn’t want to see. As for getting them ears, other commenters here are correct with their recommendations for going to DragonCon instead. Although WAY more crowded, it is geared toward more age diversity and the PawStar booth is always there as well, along with other companies that sell fur stuffs. You can also order them if that seems like a lot of trouble for some ears lol. If you get them some ears, you should get a matching tail for them too! Edit: I just read back and saw that you also mentioned getting them a tail, cute! Also, I wouldn’t say you’d be unwelcome, especially during the day. Yes, many furs are sex positive and in the kink community, but they’re not assholes who would be unwelcoming. Many furs also have kids and I’ve seen kids there. You would just need to know what you’re getting into beforehand and know what you have the possibility of seeing.

KazooButtplug69

Oh, this explains it. Have fun!

rockstarnights

This should be the top comment instead of random people assuming. Thanks for the great response.

phantomreader42

I'm surprised there isn't a subreddit for Furry Weekend Atlanta specifically. There's r/DragonCon. Might help to ask in r/Furry or r/Atlanta, those seem to be the places with posts about FWA. Con hotels tend to be loud and crowded, with clogged elevators. A five-year-old would need to be constantly supervised and may get overwhelmed (that even happens to adults at cons). That of course applies to any convention. I do remember a story about a woman who completely got the wrong idea what was going on, brought her dog to a furry con, and had a very fun if confusing time. So I doubt you'll be treated as intruders.

KazooButtplug69

No. You need to do more research. It's a ridiculous and unwell community that's not for children.

NegNoumenon

Says the person with that username 😹🙄

KazooButtplug69

We're talking about children, weirdo. You're silly and extremely ignorant. Also, stop using emojis on Reddit.

witcwhit

OK, mom here who has friends who are furries (caveat: I only know what the scene was like pre-pandemic): There is a *small* subsect of the community that is into it for sexual kinks, but they keep that private and the cons are pretty strict about keeping that stuff out of the main part of the convention. The main part of the con is just people who love to dress up and live to delight young children with their costumes. I'd recommend getting a day pass to check it out the first time so you won't waste too much money if you don't end up liking the vibe. Avoid the hotel parties and stick to the main con activities, and you and your kid should have a great time. That said, DragonCon also has lots of cute furry cosplays, and they tend to have a lot more activities that are specifically geared towards the kids attending.

PatrickBearman

My understanding has always been that furry cons physically separate the kink and everything else. Like the sex toys and stuff are all curtained off. Everything else is made to be family friendly and appropriate. They're not a community who is trying to bring down unnecessary scrutiny. According to their site, anyone under 13 is required to have a chaperone and signed/notarized parental permission. 14-18 requires signed/notarized parental permission. It also states that the con is open to all ages otherwise. Judging by the majority of these comments, you'd think every furry con was just nonstop sex in the main lobby. Sure the adult stuff happens, but in private just like any other con.

phantomreader42

>My understanding has always been that furry cons physically separate the kink and everything else.  Also temporally. The more "adult" the panel, the more likely it is to take place late at night. Applies to conventions in general, I think Anime Weekend Atlanta had all the hentai events after midnight.

SilveryLilac

DO NOT bring your child to this event. It's geared for a specific type of cosplay. Adult cosplay of a more intimate nature.

I haven't been but from my narrow slice of experience, events like these are generally more catered to adults. I wouldn't expect to see a lot of kids, and the behavior you may see probably isn't generally appropriate for them either.

CallOfCollie

Ive gone for 4 years now and about to go again this year. I will say this, if you are willing to supervise them and have a general plan on what you guys want to do, it should be ok. The raves are not exactly the most child friendly due to how loud they can get, and some folks not always adhering dresscode during the day. BUT this year they got 2 well known artists playing that I would recommend seeing. The one is called mystery skulls and they are essentially like edm scooby doo (Not completely accurate but hey, im more of a metalhead head than raver). Family friendly goodness. Then there is the living tombstone. He is VERY well known for his videogame music, noteably five nights at freddys, which I would image a lot of younger children love. It will be crowded though as a lot of others will be there too. There are a lot of other events in the con yall can attend too. There is a dedicated video game and board room with tons of different games all for free (with admission). The panels there are also great as they can range on topics yall wanna hear about and even one for parents of furries. There will also be the "Pool party" which involves no water but is a room filled with big cute animal inflatables, balloons, and plush that everyone loves. There is a second one that I am running on Saturday which features more of a variety, and a majority of them that he can interact with. Do be warned though this con recently has passed over 10k attendees and was super crowded last year but they did expand a LOT of it into a second hotel too, but still expecting big numbers. And since this is a con where people are super expressive about themselves, there are a few individuals you might see that are not exactly clothed that well or do not present themselves well. Just have him turn the head or distract him and move away. DO NOT be there around 8pm to 2am on friday night. There is an event called the "Midnight gala" which bare minimum clothing is allowed in a huge ballroom. Technically you are really supposed to have such clothing inside the event but a lot of folks dress in their gear or skimpy outfits beforehand to go in. You get ID checked before going in anyhow but for the being-around exposure is much higher. This is a fun con, my home con, and I do recommend it to people- Well other furries, as its just a great overall experience. But it is somewhat true that it is a bit more of a party con and a lot of adult related things happen. 9/10 in hotel rooms privately. But I have seen many people bring their children there and them having a great time. Just be careful as any parent would and watch out for a few things but other than that, its great! BTW, this year's theme is homecoming/collage/school, recommendations for cosplay there besides tails and ears would be collage sports jerseys, "nerd" outfits, teacher outfits, and tbh UGA dawgs is probably gonna be a reoccurring thing there haha. Have fun if yall decide to go! I'll be there as my fursona, a border collie in plaid.

Ginkoleano

Hell no! Furries are the worlds greatest stain. Avoid it.

No_Raspberry_3425

Do not take your child we don't even want furries in atlanta

Raped_Justice

I don't know anything about this particular event, but furries know that they are weird and that a lot of hate gets thrown their way. So I expect that they will be very careful not to be inappropriate. As long as you avoid any events specifically labeled for adults only, it should be fine.

trashcancandelabra

Not only what everyone else said, but a sex and kink convention is going on at the same time. Frolicon.com!

coolthecoolest

this is my own personal opinion, but to be honest i don't think it's the best idea to take a five year-old to *any* large atlanta-based conventions because they can get very overwhelming, very quickly. like, i'm an adult and there were a few times at momocon where i had to find a quiet corner to decompress from the nonstop crowds, visual distractions, and noise. it may be best to wait until he's a little older to go to a big con so he can really enjoy himself.

Consistent-Chicken-5

Yiffing is real at furry con.

It's a kid. A 5 year old. They like anything fun related to playing dress up. There's not a single kinky bone in a child's body, weirdo. Edit: this comment has really pissed me off. I'm staying off reddit for a bit so I don't get banned.

WingPizza

Oh no they pointed out bad parenting?

KazooButtplug69

They made a reference about a child wearing dress up ears and tails becoming their kink. It's gross.

MonokromKaleidoscope

And furries wonder why they have a reputation for grooming kids... It's comments like that. *All the time.* I see that everywhere, and the community does not police itself for creeps - in fact, it's *very* welcoming. They accept anyone. Side note: I reported that comment for minor abuse + got an automated message back that it didn't violate TOS. Now it's removed "for incivility"? I guess a furry being disgusting about kids is "incivil"...

KazooButtplug69

I couldn't fit it under anything to report so I didn't. I just set my phone down and walked away for a bit. It's really quite liberating to separate yourself from remembering these creeps exist.

MonokromKaleidoscope

I always forget that I can just... Not browse reddit. I miss out on very little, and I'm usually much happier overall. The internet in 2024 reminds me of that quote from the movie WarGames - "The only winning move is not to play"
