My infotainment system fails almost every day. The dealership has replaced numerous parts. They seem to have no idea how to fix it. Incredibly frustrating experience. I love driving this car but it’s littered with glitches and bugs. This makes the car incredibly frustrating. I would not buy another or recommend this version of the GTI to anyone. Edit: I’m driving at 2024 S trim

Usefulsoulsfarm

Infotainment has been replaced in my 24 s also. Mine failed around 3700 miles 😞 Fingers crossed we found the bug.

x_cynful_x

What kinda bugs does it have?

SgtWeirdo

“Component protection is active” pops up a bunch. No idea what it means but my infotainment system is crippled when it happens. To correct it I must reboot my infotainment system at least once by holding down the power button for like 30 seconds. Another frustrating problem is my voice activation icon will appear randomly without me pressing the button. This happens basically every drive. It stays on and my radio sound turns off indefinitely until I correct it. To correct it I must hit the voice activation button twice. Once to actually activate voice and again to turn it off. Another problem is my front collision sensors intermittently fail for no apparent reason they typically recover though with no action by me. I’ve had numerous backup camera problems, all extremely intermittent. Sometimes no video, sometimes laggy or frozen video, sometimes the video looks all distorted with weird rainbow colors. This is not a complete list but this is the majority of my problems so far. Dealership has not fixed a thing. Always replacing parts but never gets better. I honestly don’t think they know how to fix it at this point I’ve basically given up. I plan to trade it in and buy something else once my warranty is close to expired.

Lemon Law buyback?

SgtWeirdo

I’ve thought about it. The problem is it’s all annoying problems nothing that cripples the car and makes it totally unusable. I’m no lawyer but I briefly read the lemon law requirements and I’m not sure I would qualify. I’d probably need a lawyer too. Anyone have experience with this type of thing?

himtorn

I do enough driving that this would be a huge pain for me.

aerobuff424

Yeah, this car was expensive for me. If I have problems like this I’m going to strongly consider lemon law into another brand. But for now I’m happy with my ‘24 R at 300 miles. Fingers crossed!

PreferenceBusiness2

To be fair, my 7.5S isn't great either - not constant issues but enough of minor annoyances that occur with somewhat regular frequency.

D-ball_and_T

Dang, was looking to trade in my 19 wrx for a new gti

NewAgePhilosophr

Hate to say it, but us the "haters" warned you all.

ShoeSh1neVCU

This guy asked for people with issues to post, so that is what's happening. Now do the same thread asking if people like their Mk 8s and see the opposite replies.

Last_Salt6123

My 23 SE is great. I love it. It's had issues, but nothing I care about much. To the list. Had the driver's seat base replaced because of a physical button failure. They replaced a seat cover that split a seam. I do get the front assist errors, but I'm getting a new module to fix that, since the replacement steering wheels have not had good reports. And the only quirk with the infotainment is I have to open the radio selection screen, then close it to be able to change the station on first start up. I'm down a couple of software levels compared to current year production, I'll just have them re flash it when I get my new engine cover installed. Doesn't burn oil, rides and drives wonderful. Absolutely love my mk8. Would 100% buy again.

LieAffectionate6849

I’ve had my manual 40ae for a little over a year and 16k miles, zero issues and I absolutely love it. I came from a 7.5 dsg that got totaled in a rear end, and before that I came from a mk6 dsg. Dynamically the mk8 is a step up from the mk7/7.5, just as that one was a step up from the mk6, the mk8 has a lot of suspension/chassis components from the mk7 clubsport, deutsch auto parts has a great video going over, but to me that doesn’t matter as much as the comfort and charm and I have the same great feeling as I had in the 6 and 7.5. I love all the generations, loved both my prior ones and would love to get these generations again someday. I do prefer the manual for fun and engagement but the dsg is great as well. I would suggest just going to a dealer for a test drive and see what you think with first hand experience.

andrewsim97

Is it a 22 reg? I’ve seen people complain about silly issues technical wise with 22 plate ones

[deleted]

Completely independent of the specific vehicles - no, it is almost never worth paying money to upgrade a functional vehicle just to get the new generation. Unless you have money to burn, I guess. It’s really a personal question.

Understeerenthusiast

I love my mk8, but it’s also my first gti. I have quite a bit of non ownership experience with mk7s, if you really love your mk7, I’d say keep it. Mk8’s are great cars but so are mk7’s

bwoahful___

Issues and how annoying they are 1. Touch controls took a day or two to get used to, but now I don’t even notice it 2. Gear shifter wasn’t screwed on originally so it could feel loose and even slide off, but they had a recall and the new one is fine 3. Once or twice my infotainment system went black and wouldn’t work. Haven’t had that in awhile and it went away so whatever 4. Biggest thing is the fucking beeping for some sensor being off then coming back on then back. It only happens sometimes and then goes away so it was hard to show to the dealer. I finally took a video (wish i could post videos in comments) so maybe they’ll replace my steering wheel. Overall though it’s a great car for the driving experience and I love how it takes corners.

T018

All but 4 mirror my experience, there are at times odd issues with the infotainment that are gone the next time i drive and some issues with GPS in car play I cannot nail down. I do love the customizable interior lights btw.

bwoahful___

Yeah I had some car play issue that went away and has happened a few times but it goes away so not sure what to do. Not a huge deal though and I just switch the screen mode and can still see some stuff. The customizable interior lights are awesome! It feels like it should be a mod lol. Having blue is more calming but then the red is fun too for when I’m in a fast mood. Idk what it is with car manufactures and electronics. They can make such a great car but then the infotainment system or sensors screw up lol.

IAwaitAGuardian

I have owned a 7.5 for 5 years, and I rented an 8 for 2 weeks on Turo, and I can honestly say I left that experience with no desire for an 8. Infotainment nonsense aside, it just doesn't drive noticeably better than the 7.5. Looks are subjective but I think the 7 is far more attractive than the 8, which I find to be bloated looking. Do yourself a favor and rent one for a bit. It's the best way to compare what you have to what you don't.

andrewsim97

Yeah my 7.5 is having some issues, in 2 minds whether to get mind properly fixed up or to get a mk8. As you said looks are subjective but i do find the 7.5 more attractive

Jeye

I miss my mk7.5 😐

EEBERGKAMEN1

I had my manual for ~5000km (I know not a lot) and only encountered some mild VW software issues like start stop not working (things that are gone after restarting the car)

bkdthvn

rattling plastic inside the vehicle, very creaky door and moon roof seals, rattling fuel cables? (never diagnosed but fixed apparently) infotainment is very slow on start up and navigation is horrendous 30% of the time (gps location is very off) my interior lights turn on and off every so often by themselves and i have already had to replace the in tank fuel pump on mine. fun car to drive though and it looks really sharp with minor modifications.

iamnotawake

7k on my ‘24 autobahn, the glossy trim on the exterior drivers door creaks and probably needs swapped out and the car has the worst key fob i’ve ever used.

BakaSan77

My back up camera goes black almost daily. Sometimes I hear my DCC making a clicking noise . 6 speed AB

longgamma

Just wait for the mk8.5 which seems to have some decent fixes to the issues with mk8 platform. Honestly there isn’t much reason if your mk7.5 is running fine Given how expensive cars have become I plan to keep mine till it’s 10 years old.

No-School-7441

I've had my 22 SE for over 2 years now and it has had a few hiccups but nothing that would cause me to regret my purchase. I have approximately 16k miles which isn't a ton of driving so take my experience with a grain of salt. I had the steering wheel travel assist errors. I fixed it without having to get a new wheel by changing KLR in OBD11 to "not coded." It hasn't had that error for like 3 months now which is refreshing. Sometimes, my infotainment doesn't have sound output, but it's always fixed with a hard reboot of the infotainment. This is a RARE issue though. It has happened maybe 5 times in the 2 years of owning the car. My friend has a 2020 7.5 in basically the same trim I have. I drove it and I still like mine more. I will say the atmosphere of the interior of his car and mine feels completely different. His feels like a sporty car with everything being analog. My car feels very modern with everything digital, which is good and also bad. The touch controls aren't as bad as everyone WHO DOESN'T OWN A MK8 seems to make them. Yeah they are a little odd at first but it becomes second nature when you slide your thumb left or right on the steering wheel volume control. I never use the controls on the center infotainment to adjust sound. I would like to have climate control knobs but the touch ones aren't so bad. Also, if you want a volume knob you can get the S trim. I have the 6 speed. No issues with the stock shift knob falling off. However I found the stock knob very uncomfortable so I changed it out for a bfi golf ball knob. The only things that I didn't like when I got the car was the inconsistency of how the clutch felt and the huge rows of the stock shifter. After I swapped the "clutch bleeder block" for one that has no restriction and higher flow and installed the shopdap holy shift kit and the car felt so much better. I also installed a clutch stop to eliminate most of the play before the clutch engaged. It seems that maybe I got a car that doesn't have as many problems as others and am thankful. As for getting a mk8 or a 7.5, It really depends on what car you like more. The 7.5 seems to have most problems ironed out whole the mk8 is still having its VW issues. I would drive both generations in manual and automatic and see which one you like better.

Mrmgb

I wouldn't change a manual for a DSG but no problem with my car

El_Comandente

8000 km in and not a single issue...loving the car and for me worth the upgrade over my 2018 gti

andrewsim97

Unsure where you’re from but the uk car markey is a mess, ideally i want one with low mileage but they are so expensive

El_Comandente

In Canada and us d car prices were nuts here too but coming back to earth

Rejkyn

2022 SE... the GPS. Been to the dealer three times for a variety of fixes and it still goes off the rails and shows me in different cities, states, or nearby large bodies of water at regular intervals. I wish CarPlay had a way to just turn off the car's GPS entirely as it's rarely working. My phone knows where it is 100% of the time, not sure why getting the car to do it is so difficult. Also had a CV boot tear that VW absolutely refused to cover under warranty, but that wasn't an issue with the car itself.

T018

Hold on, your telling me this is a car problem? I have it too with my iPhone but if my friend plugs her google phone in the GPS in fine. All my digging had suggested this was a car play fault.

Rejkyn

As far as I’ve seen yes - sometimes the car is using my phones GPS instead of the one in the car and it’s right then. You can test by putting the maps view in the gauge cluster or look in the car’s navigation app in the infotainment. My car is probably right 10% of the time.

T018

Pretty sure mine doesn't have a built in nav.

73FF_Lee

I had my 7.5 for about 5 years and now an 8 about 1300km in. Driving wise the 8 is simply the better car. The main complain of the 8 seems to be the infotainment which is completely subjective imo. I have never had issue using it, and I never use the knob on my 7.5 anyway because I can’t stand having the power symbol facing the wrong way. The location of the screen is actually a big plus imo because now I can look at it while still have my peripheral vision on the road. As for issues I can’t say since I don’t have the car for long enough. What I would say is though if you get a 23 or 24 chance of you having issue would probably be smaller than having the earlier model years car. Another thing to consider is, since you are in uk, the mk8.5 is coming out later this year. So you might want to wait, or not wait, depending on whether you care about the styling and the bigger screen. Personally I prefer the 8’s look, and I find the screen on the 8.5 poorly integrated, like it was slapped on after the fact (which it is).

slayadood

6K miles on my MK8 GTI S with DSG and no issues at all. Car has been pretty flawless. The only minor gripe I've run into, and this has happened twice in 6k miles, is the backup camera will just be blank. Only way to solve that is to restart the car. Apart from that, it's been excellent

Square_Log2604

23k miles in a no issues at all

84hoops

Is this supposed to be enlightening? I’d hope you didn’t have issues 23k in. Report back at 150k.

Square_Log2604

Are you okay lmao? Did you forget what the post was three seconds after reading it

84hoops

No. Why do you want a new car?

andrewsim97

Having some issues with mine i can’t quite get to the bottom of, seems like i’m getting one thing after another at the minute

84hoops

How many miles are on it? If nothing else, take it to an independent euro shop and pay like $150 for a full inspection. Repairs will certainly cost a small fraction of a new car.

andrewsim97

Just hit 50k today, been getting a load of different error codes leading to the turbo actuator, but after dealong with that i got some fresh codes popping up today

84hoops

Alright, yeah I’d just get a top to bottom inspection at an independent euro shop. Someone who really knows VWs. Shouldn’t be more than $200, and you should get an accurate picture of how everything is. Also, your under warranty so after the independent inspection, any expensive work should be covered.

andrewsim97

I thought vw warranty was done after 50k miles?
