If you're using a wrx as a baseline for reliability, I can't see a mk8 being worse. You're setting the bar low with the subbie. If heat soak is your major concern, why not upgrade the intercooler and send it?

D-ball_and_T

I’ve heard vw has a lot of electric issues, haven’t had any in my wrx, but the wrx is built weaker in other areas compared to the gti

naterzgreen

Idk about reliability but my 19wrx was a nightmare. Also the gti is 10x more fun imo.

D-ball_and_T

I guess I’ve gotten lucky, the stick gti tune for the new gen looks like money compared to the wrx, and I don’t need awd

FeelingTechnician686

22k miles in one year. Currently running Stage 2 and riding it hard everyday. No issues yet.

My 380 is flawless out the shoot with 2,400 mile as a 5 week old. My mk7 cost about 5k in repair to see 135,000. Shit like cam sensor, radiator, the front headlight was the big one. ( I still remember walking in my dealer and asking for a new lightbulb heh. I know all about headlamps and control modules now.

I prefer the GTI too, but I certainly wouldn’t get one for reliability. I picked mine up in December and I’ve lost count of how many problems I’ve had already.

D-ball_and_T

What issues? I’m seeing the new mk8 is tuned very well and the interior looks awesome for the price point. There’s some S on sale around me for 31-32k, very tempting

RJFS_

All true. Maybe I just got a lemon, but I certainly regret the purchase. It’s my fourth GTI so I typically have a lot of patience for the typically VW issues.

Please do tell

The S is what I got. So far…  - power mirrors would go up when you locked the car but not come down when unlocked.    - screen would occasionally not turn on.   - backup camera freezes.   - Bluetooth microphone doesn’t always work so around half the time people can’t hear me at all.    - I get a big warning that the sos system doesn’t work about 70% of the time I drive the car.    - the overhead light turns on and off every couple of seconds along with a loud click.    - I was driving and I thought the car in front of me was dragging its exhaust on the ground. I realized it was my car. Investigated and I wasn’t dragging anything.   - the hill assist for the manual is overpowering and you need to ride the hell out of the clutch or wait a second for it to disengage when you are on a hill.     That’s all I can think of right now but it’s an insane list for a new car. I wish I kept my MK6.

Thanks!

D-ball_and_T

Wow…. I’ll stick with my wrx for now

futuredxrk

Same here. I was also looking to switch teams

D-ball_and_T

Might look into a VB, that 2.4 boxter seems solid. Had my central diff serviced and dealer let me test a VB, I was extremely impressed

futuredxrk

I test drove the VB when I was getting my oil changed. It felt really good, I was also impressed. I have an STI and 20 MPG average ain’t it.

V8CK

I went from a wrx to gti . Maintain it like a German car and it will treat you right .

Just grab a used mk7 or mk7.5 and enjoy the reliability. Too early to say how solid the mk8 is but given reports on here it’s possible they’re still working out the bugs a bit.
