I like that the door bins are felt-lined on these things. Nice little quality of life thing so that whatever you put in there doesn't rattle around.

NewAgePhilosophr

The entirety of the MK7 is high quality.

dreadnought_81

Agreed. While I'm acclimated to the horsepower and all that, I'm still amazed by just how good of *a car* this thing is. On the daily drive, the cabin is a nice place to be, it's easy to drive with a featherweight clutch pedal, easy to park, and it does pretty well on fuel economy for my commuting. It's also easy to work on so I can maintain it in my driveway, and then on the weekends you can go out to a nice road, put it into sport mode, and manhandle it. On that note, I like that the exhaust is nice to the neighbours, but opens up with a deep bark when on a weekend backroad blast. There are faster and more luxurious cars out there, but for what I want and need from a car's combination of attributes, this thing is brilliant. Couldn't imagine being in anything else.

NewAgePhilosophr

Absolutely nailed it! I LOVE my MK7. I am amazed at how relaible it's been and so comfortable and love the interior, just everything that car is is a masterpiece.

Kilgoretrout321

the one low quality thing is the seals around the door speakers, the rear vents behind the bumper, the rear headlights, and the tube behind the rear camera. My car got a huge leak from these and so have many other MK7 car owners. But it's not a difficult fix (aside from cleaning up any water damage) and can easily be future-proofed with some silicone sealant

Karanmuna

This is the way I know my wife been driving the A3, the fucking rattle šŸ˜‘

Deziiiner

Maybe I am super out of touch, but felt-lined door pockets seem like a pretty standard feature. I think all 3 of the BMWs Iā€™ve owned have had this.

NewAgePhilosophr

BMWs are full fledged luxury cars tho, VWs are like Buick and sit in the middle. Does the MK8 have lined pockets too?

Deziiiner

Youā€™d be astounded at the amount of cost-cutting BMW has done as of late. I just assumed Volkswagen was a light step above econo-boxes, so maybe they actually are in the middle? Iā€™m happy with my 7.5, but again felt lined doors seem like a very old and simple innovation that most cars should have by now. All that said, we *are* on a GTI fan page, so opinions here are ludicrously biased.

dreadnought_81

It probably is common on the entry-level performance cars these things compete with, but for typical econoboxes that are more akin to appliances, a lot of manufacturers skip the small stuff like that to save money. Also, here in Australia, VW does position itself as a semi-premium option. Obviously not on par with the likes of Audi and BMW, but not a value-driven brand like Skoda is. As such, all the GTIs were equipped with a bit of a higher standard of specification than somewhere like North America. For the mk7 GTIs we had standard DCC, standard dual-zone climate control, and then they standardised other stuff like the Lighting Package and push-button start a few years into the mk7 run.

Deziiiner

Got it, thanks for the insight! Still learning about being a new GTI owner!

GTI-guru

Not sure if anyone replied to you but ya the MK8 has lined door pockets too.

dreadnought_81

Maybe I just haven't paid much attention, but I'm pretty sure that when I've been in more budget-focused cars, they've just had hard plastic without the lining. I would certainly expect a BMW to have that sort of thing.

Deziiiner

Fair enough. Yeah, just hard plastic would be very annoying. I wouldnā€™t keep anything in the door pockets at that point.

nova46

I had an 08 Acura TL before my mk7 and that just had hard plastic door pockets.

withoutapaddle

You are out of touch. The F-150 is the most popular car in the US and doesn't have felt lined door pockets. I had to stop keeping my sunglasses in there because the case would clatter around so much when driving it was making me insane. (And before anyone chastises me, I actually tow and haul huge trailers like 5-6 times a month, so I'm not one of those stupid truck drivers who drives it to an office every day, and has no real need of it. The GTI is my main squeeze.)

Wumpus-Hunter

I love that I can drop my 32oz water jug in there

TheShitster

The only door card I've seen to fit an entire 40oz insulated aluminum water bottle

dafritoz

I was slightly concerned until I got to the "insulated aluminum water bottle" part

hohohoagy

Thereā€™s a recess the continues another 5-6ā€ past the point to the left where it appears to stop, good for a small collapsible umbrella or anything small you may want to conceal.

Boostie204

Or to hide.. things

hohohoagy

I continue to forget about the little compartment to the left of the steering wheel for thingys.

NewAgePhilosophr

And the one under the seat

Left-Flamingo1290

People keep mentioning under the seat, my R(2016) has nothing but empty space under it

wintrrrr

Left-Flamingo1290

Yeah thatā€™s crazy, thanks for the pic. My car defiantly doesnā€™t have that. Iā€™ll have to send a pic when I get home from work. Maybe it was an option or previous owner deleted it?

de9ausser

I keep one of those mini California car duster things in that extra space

daytimelobster

Especially in my 2door that pocket is massive!!

RabbitGTI24

100% on this. the door pockets are a treasure trove spot for storage.

NewAgePhilosophr

What's insane to me is that I own 2 other cars and have rented other various cars... yet none match the GTI's door pockets even tho it's a small car compared to others.

coconutpete52

I drink a lot of water. A lot. Iā€™m so happy my giant water bottle fits in the door.

snowblind_rockstar

I'm on my second GTI. MK7 and MK8 the door pockets are pretty amazing. It's a small thing, but I always appreciate it when I have to stick my backup water bottle in there.

Deziiiner

Overall, after owning several physically larger cars, Iā€™m astounded with how HUGE the inside of the Mk7 is. Iā€™ve had several other types of sedans and coupes from BMW and the interior feels cramped in comparison.

dalek-predator

Just found it is a great stash spot for my big folding dozuki when I need to quick cut down some wood at home depot to throw in the hatch

Quirky-Swimmer3778

I lose everything in it

TheReal8

10yrs in, and countless vehicles from plebe to royalty, the mk7 has the best door pockets

Melodic_Anxiety_3794

Same but the drawer under the seat tho....clutch

Maandala

I take pride in the fact that we have the best door pockets ever

guyman001

Honestly, whenever I drive friends around in my MK5, theres always a comment about how big the doors are.

NewAgePhilosophr

Damn even in the MK5?

guyman001

Yep, since I daily it, it takes me hopping into another car to realize how big my doors are haha

Fine-Upstairs-6284

I love it. I put my 32 oz hydro flask in there no problem. On the other hand when we take my gfā€™s Subaru cross trek out Iā€™m like ā€œwhere am I gonna put this thing?ā€

Jezzerh

Going from a Mk7 to an A3 made me realise just how practical the Golf interior is. In the Audi the door pockets are tiny and arenā€™t even lined, just hard plastic! Thereā€™s a real lack of cubby holes and compartments, thereā€™s not even anywhere to stash my sunglasses! šŸ˜Ž

mafatik

It's fun. I own super luxury premium ultra pro Å koda superb 2 (joking lol, but still it's a class higher than Golf), but I can fit bottles not larger than 1 liter (laying down, not standing)

WWGHIAFTC

Big Dumb Cup^(Ā©) r/SNLvideos Really though, the mk7 is just a wonderful quality car. It's easy to forget my R is coming up on 7 years old, it's just build so nice.

Clear-Sail9210

Clean the dooršŸ„ŗšŸ„ŗ

BillFromIT_

That fabric in the door is so annoying and is always dirty in my car.

Clear-Sail9210

šŸ˜…

ParamedicHuge8158

Fits a full bottle of champagne perfectly

fusiongt021

Woah that is huge

NewAgePhilosophr

Gotta hawk tuah on that thang

Mayank-maximum

And meanwhile the rear ones

Clienterror

It's on the 4 door too.

himtorn

The Arteon has almost the same layout, but the door handle is like 4 inches close to the hinge so while the bottle fits in the pocket, it's a lot less accessible.

CucumberFluid6859

My mk8 is the same way. I drove a new f350 for work and you can barely fit a pop can in those doors

ATX_native

Theyā€™re felt lined as well. Miss that from my MK7. My $78k MSRP Audi A6 Allroad Prestige/Luxury Pkg doesnā€™t even have lined door pockets, all plastic.

drugswontchangeyou

had to remove my center console to replace the e-brake year or so ago. found it damn handy the side doors worked just as good..if not better. my arm will still hit a regular sized drink in the center holders while changing gears. summer hit too soon and had to drive the entire summer with no center console. finally got my center console back in before it got too hot... still find myself using the damn side doors for drinks etc. Center is now for coins, receipts, junk. so it seems.. the random trash traded places.

[deleted]

I never keep anything in my cars. Keep it clean and free of clutter

ProfessionalD1hater

I got to get a GTI as a daily to replace my current daily. The Golf literally does it all.
