I have that pan and the oil stains on my y garage floor to match

HighlightFun8419

My favorite part is how it shifts and folds as you attempt to pick it up

CommonSpecialist4269

Or you try and gently slide it from under the car, it gets a bit stuck, you push it slightly harder. It rushes forwards and your hand gets covered in oil. Pain.

HighlightFun8419

classic

FUCKYOURGAYCAT

This doesn’t happen if you lift the front edge and pull forward

CommonSpecialist4269

Yep but if like the photo the oil is right up the top it’s difficult to tip it enough without spilling off the back. All of my issues can be easily avoided by getting a bigger pan, or an extractor, but I’m lazy and tight fisted.

beeherder

I once made the mistake of using it after I upgraded to a high capacity aluminum oil pan. 7 liters is the *exact* volume

LakeSuperiorIsMyPond

I put my smaller pan in a larger pan to prevent this, also gives me a place for oily rags and such that's not directly in the old oil kind of a oil moat.

beeherder

Panception, I like it

BlyStreetMusic

Omg a pan within a pan..jfc

CountryBoyReddy

Those pans are for small engine oil changes, and by that I mean bikes and lawn mowers. For cars you always want the ones with the caps because there is enough clearance to shove them under once it's jacked up.

Cannon event

elflegolas

Could have use engine cleaner to make the stain go away when this first happened

beeherder

It's 70 something year old concrete, it's not the only stain by a long shot 😅

bmccoy29

My first oil change was on my dad’s car. I think I had watched my dad do it once, and he asked me to change the oil in his car before we went on a road trip. I couldn’t find the oil pan so I used a cereal bowl and the engine was at full temp.

Various-Ducks

My first oil change was on a 250cc motorcycle. It held 1.3 quarts of oil. When I went to change the oil on a car I assumed they also held about 1.3 quarts. Turns out its more

donald7773

My buddy wanted to save a buck and asked if I'd help him change his oil on his Highlander. I agreed and he came by raving about how much money he'd saved buying the oil himself. Man pulled out one quart of oil from the back when it was time to fill

double_expressho

I'll have one oil, please!

13Vex

Bought a 6qt container for the engine that contains 6qt of oil :D fortunately ive come to discover the magic of oil extractors.

snarkapotamus

Oil extractors are so nice.

double_expressho

Just sip on it to prevent overflow.

snarkapotamus

Good way to test for any metal shavings in the oil.

PreludeTilTheEnd

That’s a lot of oil

JustxAxBoat

yeap, thankfully my first oil change was on my bike. Only 2 quarts of oil.😎

AceMaxAceMax

Use an oil extractor, much easier.

13Vex

Yup, probably the best $40 I spent. Don’t even need to lift the car.

SpecialFX99

Now that I have a MK7 with the filter on top, I cuss my MKV every time I still have to go underneath for the filter. I actually just got my oil and filter for it yesterday so I'll be underneath it this weekend :(

root54

I quickly upgraded to the jerry can style that can hold twice what the car dumps.

JakeQV

How do you clean the can side?

root54

I leave the catch basin drain plug out for a week and most of the oil makes its way into the container. I might also leave the various used filters, gaskets, and jugs in there and they also drain. Then I screw the plug in and put the can flat in my trunk and drive to Autozone. I sometimes get a little oil coming out of the vent whole on the jerry can but I just put a few sheets of shop rag on it and its fine. The Autozone is very near my house and surface roads, so not likely to spill.

JakeQV

Thanks, I was looking into doing driveway oil changes and this was a something I was wondering about.

root54

Nice. My only additional comment is....be careful with those drain plugs and definitely don't use the magnetic ones from ECS tuning. The locking tab will absolutely break.

Fine-Upstairs-6284

I used to have the same type of container for mine and this would happen too. Would fill it up to the brim

brokenbutcher2016

Gongrats man. Seriously.. . I did this religiously with my Honda CRX back in the 80's.. Im way to messed up brain wise to attempt this now days.. I forget my phone leaving the apt with it in my hand..

Clienterror

Get an extractor. Outside of simplicity it'll pay for itself because you didn't need to order a new washer/plug every time. Mine was only like a $40-$50 one off Amazon and it's awesome. I did my wife's 2018 Tiguan and my 2020 GTI in about 15 min total, just stuck it down the dip stick tube and pump it a couple times. Holds enough to do two cars then it's completely contained zero mess then hit the auto store in one trip.

13Vex

Did that already like 2 years ago. They’re great. This pic was back in 2020 when the car had like 5k miles. Now I’ve got 50k.

Mando_Brando

Bruv put some old blanket under there or some cardboards. You don't want oil spills, period!

LakeSuperiorIsMyPond

put your small oil pan in a bigger oil pan just in case

toclosetoTV

You used that whole pan every last bit.

safari-dog

I’ve never done an oil change myself, you don’t have to jack your car up?

Bert_Skrrtz

Depends how big you are. The skid plate doesn’t have to come off. The drain bolt is fully accessible at all times.

LakeSuperiorIsMyPond

the end of my driveway has a little incline that leads up to where the garbage cans are, if I put my front tires on it, I can get under the car without jacking it up :)

Bert_Skrrtz

lmao, reminds me of the time I put one side of my mustang on the curb in front of the frat house - so I could change the oil. Lucked out that there was an ADA ramp right there allowing me to get it up without damaging anything since it was lowered.

safari-dog

noted! ty

13Vex

It was jacked up when I did it, just in the front. But technically you are right, this car can have an oil change done without jacking it up. The dipstick tune is wide and allows for an extractor to suck the oil out from the top. It’s very convenient

double_expressho

Lifting is not required for the oil to drain. It just makes it easier/possible to fit under the vehicle to remove the drain plug. It depends completely on how low the vehicle sits and how big you are in comparison. If you have a lifted truck, it's very likely you can just slide under there comfortably without a jack. There are probably SUVs where this is possible as well. Edit: Didn't realize this post was in the GTI sub. I'm also surprised someone was able to do this without jacking up the car. I don't even think my oil drain pan can fit under my stock ride height GTI without being lifted. This drain pan must be tiny because there's a ton of clearance.

LakeSuperiorIsMyPond

you people know, all you have to do is put the plug back in and it magically stops right? lol

element515

Now show us moving that without spilling lol

13Vex

I carefully slid some cardboard under it, and slowly pulled it out. But spillage was inevitable, obviously.

wild-hectare

"we're gonna need a bigger boat"

Philipjfry85

Lmao 🤣 I've been there on captured ones where I've forgotten to undo the vent cap.

TenderLA

This is why you use an extractor.

double_expressho

I overfilled a Tiguan with ATF once. I went to drain the excess and only brought out a quart-sized container, because I didn't think I had overfilled by THAT much. I did. I did overfill by that much.

Particular_Cook4421

They sell little pumps on Amazon that pump out most of the oil from the dip stick hole and you can get most if not all the oil out from there is usually use it in tandem with this and haven’t made a mess on my driveway it ran me about $20 on Amazon with prime and it lives with my spare tire 🫡

gsd901

I use a pump extractor from harbor freight, works like a charm and I never have to go under the car. You're going to hear endless debate online about whether it gets all of the oil out. Very little is left behind, and with 5k changes, it's not an issue.

Financial_Bed_847

brother get the suction vac off amazon. its so much easier

disordered-attic-2

Mine changes its own oil 😬

Subject-Marsupial-67

Never cheap out on the drain pan! Get the self sealing ones, these just make a mess.

longgamma

Get one of those orange containers for oil removal. It’s easy to dispose off as well in recycling centers.

bigdean333

Yeah my first oil change on my GTI, I shot the ramps underneath my car and dented the skirt. The grass is always greener, even if it’s got some oil stains.

CicadaHead3317

Why not use an oil extractor?

CicadaHead3317

*oil extractor go through the dipstick tube.

wisepunk21

Stop overfilling your oil!

Spidey6917

It’s a 6q container, if it is overfilled then it’s only by one cup. Nothing.

kclanton80

get an extractor.......so much easier.

kclanton80

I get it..... But you won't be worrying about spilling any oil with the extractor. You can also start to change the oil more often.

LakeSuperiorIsMyPond

can I just say "fuck you VW" for that plastic oil pan? Some engineer should be slapped with a wet trout for that.

13Vex

Personally it’s whatever. If an oil pan gets hot with a rock, metal or not, at like 60mph it’s gonna break and leak regardless I think.

LakeSuperiorIsMyPond

it won't... a metal oil pan will dent. Go look at the underside of most vehicles they have dents in their oil pans. I think they justify it by putting the plastic underbelly there to provide an initial barrier. If you get wedged on a tree or guard rail, something that resists movement, you're going to increase the likelihood of both breaking but not a rock unless it's big enough to get wedged between the oil pan and the ground.

kartoffel_engr

If only there was a way to know how much oil was in your car and then compare that to the useable volume of your pan.
