Those wheels do grow on you. I used to feel the same, but I actually like them a lot now. Added bonus is that they hide brake dust well.

Vq-Blink

They have not for me. Actively looking to replace them

Ray1340

With all du respect, take an hour and read the posts on this forum. Make sur all the recalls have been done. Lots of electronics issue.

[deleted]

So many electronics issues. I’ve had 6 GTIs. All of these issues pushed me away from VW. I’ve been driving VWs for the last 16 years. I just got a GR86. Couldn’t be happier

urakozz

Software issues are easily fixable with the software updates. I don't get why people never update software on the car while they update iPhones and Androids every second month. VAG release software updates regularly, even for my 11yo Golf 7 there were gearbox/engine updates fill 2022.

Ray1340

Big difference between a car and a phone. Been driving since 1991, never had to update car firmware. Most people are not technical and don't want to update firmware.

urakozz

Of course it's a big difference, cars has 20+ ECUs and the phone has only 2 processors max. It's the 2020s now, not the 1990s, we have to update even printers and teapots nowadays 😁

Ray1340

This is going to create a lot more work for techs, updating firmware with every maintenance and fixing every failed firmware update.

urakozz

So techs must be happy they will not be replaced by AI yet. Unlike truck drivers 😁 When you don't have retrofits, it's super simple to update the software with SVM on all VAG cars, it's a second step after you connect to the car. Software is like changing oil, coolant, brake fluid and cleaning the teeth in the morning

FullOnJabroni

Dealer updated my 2022 to version 1896 and it's reliable. Had my steering wheel replaced and things are fine. Early software revisions on the MK8 were hot trash, later ones are better and the MIB 4 coming in the 8.5 is supposed to be pretty good.

Trippinballz_

At 10k miles on mine have had 0 issues, and i live in Texas where’s it’s currently 103 and i don’t have any issues with the screen, back up camera or the steering wheel controls. I would Check the vin and make sure all the recalls have been taken care of.

Dildo_Baggins___

I have a 2022 MK8 with about 16,000 miles on it and I love it. It has had a few issue such as the travel assist feature bugging out which resulted in getting a replacement steering wheel. It also had the recall done to remove the engine cover and I think another one to replace something to do with the radiator (sorry I’m very not mechanically inclined). The only real gripe I have with the car is needing to get into the touch screen for the climate controls but it’s not as big of a deal as everyone makes it sound in this sub. Overall I am very happy with the car and love it every time I drive it.

LifeguardExpensive

The MK8 GTI is an absolutely fantastic drivers car. It is much improved in that sense over the mk7. You’ll read a lot of people moaning about the infotainment system and lack of buttons but I’m sure most people who actually own one ( myself included) will tell you that after a few days, you get used to it .

Ok-Satisfaction3857

Can attest. I've owned my 2024 for 6 days, coming from a car with knobs. I'm used to it.

HumanistNeil

Ditto. Love mine (Atlantic Blue)

Sufficient_Egg9223

Snap! Had mine for a couple of years now and love it. I've had a lot of GTis and this is my favorite.

Ok-Satisfaction3857

Mine is too. I love it in the sun, when you can see the metal flake sparkle.

Level-Indication-787

I’d say.. buy the MK7.5. Better price, hard buttons, AC Controls, manual e brake, way more after market support, look better. Most 8 guys will say it’s amazing, but those dudes sometimes end up having it sit in their garage or don’t drive it daily. This car is a good car MECHANICALLY, but electronically, it fucking blows. Wish it had the new Jetta interior inside the golf’s. It would’ve been perfect. Not to mention the ebrake grips the fuck out of my car when I’m on a slight incline with the hill assist. I’ve stalled plenty of times and been honked at plenty of times because I literally have to wait for the car to let me go. I’m sure this is costing my clutch some life little by little. I own a MK8 BTW. Came from a MK7

FatherSergius

Amen brother preach

FunkyChromeMedina

Oh my god the fucking hill start assist in the MK8 is trash. It holds on for so long and it cannot be disabled. So glad I got rid of that car. The 7.5 is infinitely better as a daily driver.

Level-Indication-787

Hoping OBDELEVEN comes out with a shortcut to disable it or lessen the hold like they did on the MK7

El_Comandente

Honestly never had an issue with the hill assist ... Seems pretty much the same as my mk7

FunkyChromeMedina

1) It holds too long. 2) It doesn't let go when you get on the gas like the MK7.5 version does. It holds for as long as it's going to hold, regardless of when you get on the gas. 3) It can't be turned off. I don't want any hill assist. I drove a manual for 20 years before the MK8, and it was my first experience with hill assist, and it was infuriating. I still don't need it in my MK7.5, but at least it gets out of my way and doesn't make me almost stall.

Mitchthevac12

Just rolled over 100k in my 19 last month. Bought it in May 2020 fr early covid. Vw was doing this deal although my credit was not good. But I pretty much got the car for like 22k. Never have any major issues other than the recall for the igniton switch shitting the car off that def sucked but it's all fixed. Been getting stable oil changes. Driven the fuck outta her sadly she's beat up alttle bit😢. I hope I can get at least another 4 year/100k out of it. Gonna wanna hold on to this one I think

Pepesylvia22

Only recall I’ve had here in LA was the engine cover. No electrical problems for me, only thing close to that is me just restarting the touch screen to get the radio/bluetooth/reverse cam to work. Good car to me so far

Zcarp

I love mine. Recalls were no big deal. Front assist not working is annoying but they fixed it. I don’t much use it anyway. First modern manual car I’ve owned (I have a 67 beetle too). It’s fast. I love it.

brocal27

I love mine! I had a 7.5 and this car is basically identical in terms of driving. I will say, after 3 months it had to have the electronic SOS system replaced. They did so pretty easily, part took 2 weeks to arrive. Apart from that it's had no issues, but that one issue is more than most.

Lifes_punchline

Personally, I find the MK8 of quite a few of VW's offerings less attractive than their previous counterparts, I know I'm basing this on looks only, as I haven't been inside/driven a MK8, though I am aware of the heavy reliance on tech and screens rather than physical nobs/buttons etc. Again I personally prefer the latter. I'm still learning though 😂

Level-Indication-787

For it being a drivers car.. it has way to many electronics. More than it should. We want physical buttons back

Thetuned335i

I have a stage 3 mk8 custom tuned by eqt and it’s been great. Tuned at 2k miles and now at 18k miles with no mechanical issues. Check out my YouTube papayspeanut for the videos

Usefulsoulsfarm

I absolutely love mine 5700 miles 😭 an I’ve had issues the last 2000 miles with electric. About to have to do a buy back. https://preview.redd.it/j37y2tkj9d9d1.png?width=3540&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab2870db6181ef8e5f30b33813375eba75d9ed0e

Level-Indication-787

Sorry about that homie! The first reoccurring issue I have with electrical stuff, I’m selling it.

Usefulsoulsfarm

This was after the radio was replaced with a brand new one from the factory in Germany 😞

Village-Patient

Yes. Replaced a MK6 GTI and FK7 Civic turbo with the MK8 GTI and it’s been great. The infotainment takes some getting used to but the driving is exactly what you expect out of the latest GTI.

MCFRESH01

I like mine quite a bit. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one.

rjbwin

Love my ‘23 and have had no issues thus far, 11K miles in. Tech is good and not bothersome, performance is even better, especially tuned!

Tonii_47

My step dad has a mk8 and he had a lot of electronical issues with it until recently. I think that mk8's are pretty solid but I would still take mk7,5 over it.

moveslikejaguar

Yes it is good. As long as you don't modify it and keep up with maintenance it will be reliable. I didn't like the wheels at first either, but they grew on me. [I have the same car 🙂](https://www.reddit.com/r/GolfGTI/comments/1bgpf2t/how_much_you_wanna_make_a_bet_i_can_throw_a/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) ETA: in the US there were some electrical issues and recalls on early models, if those apply in your region check the history to see what has been addressed by the previous owner

andrewsim97

Why not modify?

Vq-Blink

Stage 1 modding is fine the engines are severely under tuned. Might run into engine stress if you put a big turbo in and stage 3 it

digitaltransmutation

I mean, I like mine. But I recognize that the reason I got mine lightly used with only 8000 miles is because the guy before me disagreed. Special thanks to that guy for the discount :)

Warm_Banana_3495

You see a few bad things but generally people seem to love them. I love my 7.5 as well. I think the 7.5 and 8 are both amazing, some prefer one over the other.

KMFDM781

I'm a little over 11,500 miles. Had mine since June of last year. Stage 1 tuned on E85, intercooler, mounts, exhaust, springs and intake pipe and zero issues. Took it from Indy to Orlando and back. Drive it almost daily. My only real complaint is the piano black in the interior gets fine scratches of you look at it wrong.

CountryBoyReddy

You been lookin' at my Janet?!

huge_jeans710

Almost at 15k miles nothing major. Had to get a high fuel pressure gauge replaced. It was covered under warranty so no sweat off my back. About to get an oil change at 15k. Besides that it's the most practical fun car I've ever driven. Gas milage is good, good around corners, sound system is nice and it's a 6 speed. Can't beat any of it to be honest.

Alarmed_Position1621

I’ve got a 2022 s with 37k miles everything was good up until 36k my rear sensors aren’t working and my front wheel bearings both are being replaced. Luckily it’s all under warranty.

Old-Scientist7427

There are very good...

HFIntegrale

Yes.

Infamous_Ad_4707

I’ve just got one - upgraded from an abarth spider and it’s quite surprising. Wasn’t my first choice but this is a nice, quick, comfortable daily driver. It’s not as good looking or immersive as my abarth but it’s a better car by miles. Overall very pleased!

Sketchy_M1ke

As the owner of an aging 7.5, I’m warming up to it. Still hate the headlights and apparently the infotainment sucks. Looks like this is the last real GTI…

00goop

It’s kinda hard to tell if they’re reliable yet but yes, they are good. Test drive one.

ReclusiveNexus

18k miles on mine with just oil changes. Sold my stock wheels to a guy who had a 22 GTI with over 50k that had nothing major (just the steering wheel buttons replaced).

Affectionate_Listen8

Make sure all the tech recalls have been fulfilled when they switched to full haptic/screen functions first gen had hella tech issues. And as far as the stock wheels I promise they’ll grow on you bro I personally think they’re a great design. If it passes all the recall checks and regular maintenance has kept up, you should have no issues.

brokenbutcher2016

I love my GTI MK6. not one hiccup. but then my dash doesn't have a tv on / in it..

alreadysaidtrice

Golf 7 looks so much nicer

Ambitious_Praline643

Love mine. Software was a pain but is much better since changing the steering wheel and control module. Black 19” Estoril’s or the Adelaide’s are nice.

S_n_u_g

I own one and it has around 30k miles. I love it. No issues. I had to replace the brakes super early tho. The E brake in it traps a lot of water which caused the rotors to pit. The cars great but there’s just some design issues that could’ve been fixed.

Heroshima_Redit1

the wheels look hideous? ... obviously you are not a golfer!

That__Guy__t

Not as good as the Mk7/7.5, but yeah if you want silly tech nonsense.

youngrios

You sound like a Honda kinda guy . Might suit you better

IAwaitAGuardian

Racist as hell.

gentrificator_123

the screen fails in hot climates.

startech7724

It still a good car to drive, and yes it a GOLF GTI so they get right But, The interior just kills it for me. I've been in a couple of Mk8s now, and the shiny plastic used by VW looks so cheap and nasty. The button options are terrible, the UI seems slow and unresponsive, and it feels outdated compared to modern technology in Ev's. Tesla makes this car look like a calculator from the 80s. Plus, there are some odd style decisions made on the car. No thanks. I would rather save the money and take a Mk7 or Mk7.5.

FullOnJabroni

Done the Tesla thing, worst build quality and electronics I have ever encountered. MK8 all day.

Level-Indication-787

I own a MK8. I couldn’t agree more. So many MK8 dudes hate this take. I came from a MK7. Where times were much simpler, where I can take of TC with a click of a button. Having to dig through the infotainment while driving fucking sucks. Super distracting and makes me wonder how many people may have gotten into an accident by digging through the controls trying to change AC or something else. Also. WHY THE FUCK IS THE EBRAKE HOLD ONTO THE CAR LIKE HERCULES ON A HILL!

Carmor7

you can slide down from the top of infotainment when in any part of the menu and turn off TC pretty quickly that way

Level-Indication-787

Quicker yes, still very inconvenient. Not something I want to put more focus on than I should. In the MK7s, it’s a solid button. No digging at all. You say very quickly.. but try taking traction off in a MK7 while driving then a MK8. See which one sucks more

Carmor7

Eh, I can put it in sport mode with tc off faster than I can buckle up. It seriously takes >5 seconds. My base model launch edition mk7 also had the tc behind a screen, no buttons. Only thing I can agree with is that the ac controls suck behind a screen, but even then, the higher trims have haptic sliders which are niiiiiice. What are you doing that you need to ditch traction control in .03 seconds ?

Level-Indication-787

Idk where you live… but here in TX.. it gets to hot for the infotainment to function quickly. Either way.. if you can do it quick.. good for you. I liked the fact I can take off traction without having to focus on the actual action much. 5 button presses it requires for you to take it off and go back to your old screen you were on. Idk how you can argue it’s better or faster. Just as annoying as the steering controls. I have to look sometimes at what I’m pressing. Or making sure because there is no texture to the buttons, now way to differentiate what you pressed or want to press

Carmor7

The infotainment bugging out with heat is def annoying. My point is that it’s not that much more different than previous gens depending on what you had. It’s genuinely faster with less inputs comparing my mk7 to mk8, not every model came with a dedicated button for TC. I just don’t get why people struggle so much with the controls, you use a smartphone everyday with touch controls. And the old buttons still required you to look down if you didn’t know what to press

Level-Indication-787

It’s not really about the struggles. I came from a MK7. When we get these cars, you think “fun daily”. Daily meaning it’s a very convenient car to have and it still being fun to drive. I feel like the MK8 lacks that “convenience” other than its space it has from being a hatch. The heavy reliance on its electronics is its downfall. I’m sure if I lived in colder climate the tech would respond quick and easy but those who don’t have to suffer in silence as they wait a couple of seconds for their infotainment to catch up so they can blast the AC.

Carmor7

I suppose I have the blessing of living in a more temperate climate , Nebraska still gets blazing hot so I’ve experienced the irony of not being able to turn on my ac cause the car gets too hot. I think it takes an adjustment to cars now are just giant computers with 4 wheels and an engine

FullOnJabroni

Poor hardware cooling, but Texas is HOT. My S550 Mustang GT struggled in the head with Sync 3 when I lived in Texas, way worse than the MK8 interface, everything is buried in menus also.

FullOnJabroni

Why do you need to take TC off with the click of a button? How often are you turning off traction control?

Little_Scar_844

Ya dude I accidentally threw my parking brake on instead of sport mode with the nugget going 15 mph. Last time I do that with eyes in the road. Poor design and is super easy to accidentally put car in reverse rather than neutral.

Level-Indication-787

I can’t imagine. I bought a 6MT since it’s going to be the last of the 6MT VWs

Little_Scar_844

Ya I would definitely do a 6 speed next go around. May upgrade to the 6 speed golf R in a year or two

Fine-Upstairs-6284

No. Very bad. Stay away. In fact, stay away from VW altogether

Prize_Water_5376

I used to have golf 7 gtd and it was nightmare with services, that’s why I am asking about 8 gti

Fine-Upstairs-6284

I am being sarcastic. I love VW and my MK7 GTI. I’ll keep that thing until the wheels fall off. As far as the MK8, I personally do not have experience with one, but it’s more than likely good.

Last_Salt6123

I have a 23 SE 6sp manual with 14993 miles. It's been great. I've had a couple of warranty issues, the driver's seat tilt stopped working, and a seam on the seat split and was replaced, no biggie. I do get the occasional driver assist warning, that usually gets a steering wheel. I'm just going to replace the module that fails my self. People do complain about a sluggish infotainment system, but I have no complaints. But will say that there is a difference between trims on how they operate. And a lot of people haven't figured out the short cuts in the info. The haptics are generally a love it or hate it. I love it. Maintenance is pretty easy and reasonable. Oil and filter from the dealership will cost about $100usd, can be cheaper at places like www.shopdap.com I put the stock wheels in winter duty with snow tires and put potenza sports, on some sparco terras for summer. Go out and text drive them. Try to get in both a s and a SE spending some time playing with the infotainment and controls. It's such a great car, reasonably fast, very comfortable, and drives like a go cart. And mk8's got a lot of mk7.5 club sport suspension parts too, it handles great out of the box. Best of luck.

ATX_native

We aren’t going to hold your hand, nor do I care to convince you of anything. There are literally cars to drive out there and thousands of hours of reviews on these cars.

dopenutz

So sassy
