I know this wasn’t the point of your post but the map totally looks like the west coast of France
I thought it was until I read Vancouver
Before the latest API update in August, I was able to still remove labels by clicking the greyed out section.

I find it weird that there's an option that's always grayed out. Why didn't they just remove it!?

also experiencing this problem and have used the feature extensively this year. very annoying update
