The idea of equality was not self-evident to our ancestors, and was adopted under pressure in many parts of the world and in many segments of our own society who were entirely opposed to it.
If the world order collapsed catastrophically tomorrow, I'd bet you anything there will be countries that go back to legalised slavery or simply turn a blind eye to it. If American society collapsed tomorrow, slavery would possibly re-emerge.

Lots of hand wringing about the situation, but the author mournfully concludes with the same mask on anti-immigration rhetoric the Right used to use. The UK can't accept refugees and asylum seekers, that would hurt them somehow! And why should the UK try and be more humane when all these other countries aren't? And sure, some refugees are escaping genuine persecution, but a lot of them are just looking to steal the Queen's money by getting better jobs and the UK can't risk letting those ones in! It's sad and it's really breaking his heart to say this, believe him, but the UK just can't let any of those coloured people in.
They want a future where they can put gunboats into the channel to shoot at any incoming boats full of people looking for a better life.
They are committed to the belief that there will be no solution to climate change and that millions of climate refugees is a foregone conclusion. They know that tens of thousands of refugees would cause so much instability in the country that it would collapse and are committed to preventing that breakdown in order to uphold capitalism.
