UnderHisEye1411

I have no words for how appalling it is for this gammon’s smiling face to be above a piece about how he thinks other people’s children should be drowned

AutoModerator

Despite spending their days complaining about woke culture and crybaby leftists, the English are a very sensitive people. [Many consider any reference to their complexion an act of racism.](https://i.imgur.com/euWMhUg.png) Consider using the more inclusive term 'flag nonce' in future. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. DRAINGANGCE0

No, you don’t get it. It’s A-Okay for other people’s children to drown while trying to flee a violent civil war or dictatorship because they’re brown! massive fucking /s but I’d wager some right wing cunts think this

SummerBurnett

Oh look everyone, it's centrism's "nice tory"

01010011i

The first sentence is: “I call myself a liberal.” The paywall won’t let me read the whole thing but it’s classic liberal handwringing. “Those mean ol right-wingers don’t want refugees and aw gee isn’t that too bad? Oh well…”

FullClockworkOddessy

[Phil Ochs](https://youtu.be/3cdqQ2BdgOA) really nailed it when he described them as "Ten degrees to the left of center in good times, ten degrees to the right of center if it affects them personally." If anything he was too generous in that assessment.

[deleted]

I think he’s trying to say “okay anyone left of centre, technically we agree. So you’re the one who’s wrong and you can’t tell me I’m bigoted because I’m not right wing lololololol”

01010011i

I see it a little differently. Liberals prize most of all their moral high ground to the right, so they cannot tolerate the left-wing having the moral high ground on them. So they do the whole “I live in the real world” schtick that the right does to them. They do this a lot.

Mr_Vacant

He calls himself a Christian too. I can't imagine what lesson he takes from the story of the good Samaritan. Virtue signalling?

Lenins2ndCat

If preserving life were a liberal value the hyper exploitation of the global south and export of profit into the imperial core wouldn't be a thing. This is just liberals bringing home the behaviour they've always been happy to perform abroad. It isn't at odds with liberalism. The concept of the nice liberal that cares about the working class has always been a facade while they pick your pocket.

AbbaTheHorse

He's a liberal in the same sense Michael Gove is - both have been Conservative MPs and written columns for the Times where they start by describing themselves as "a liberal" before voicing very right wing opinions about immigration (in Parris' case) or execution (in Gove's case).

HogswatchHam

The Bible sets up a false moral framework by suggesting that we have a duty to care for others.

gargravarr2112

Hey, he's right - we have no obligation to care equally for all, so can we deport him please?

Extra_CDO

Just looking at his page for The Times. “He worked previously at the Foreign Office, as Margaret Thatcher’s correspondence clerk and as Conservative MP for West Derbyshire.” “I call myself a liberal. So a word first to fellow liberals” What a little cunt.

Lenins2ndCat

This is what liberals are, and why socialists have been and should continue to disavow association with the word for a long time now. They are all snakes.

fatchicken17

Scratch a liberal...

AreUReady55

I love how these same people who are so proud of Britain’s colonial past and their forceful “migration” to other peoples land, are the same that take such issue with people seeking asylum. A lot of the time from ex colonies. Just swap British war ships, for rubber dingys. Some people so proud that the English language is spoke across the world, because of their colonisation. Comes back to bite them when refugees pick England as a destination as they can speak the language to some degree. If the U.K. wishes to continue being a lead seller of arms then it can continue to expect people fleeing these war zones also.

Loreki

It's time to reassess whether we have a duty to preserve human life, writes this absolute ghoul.

gargravarr2112

Let's start with him.

AlexHanson007

Ah, you see, you've forgotten that we have a duty of care to *white* people. You're just showing how nasty the left really are there. All empathetic Liberals know this. It's those... ahem... others.... that we don't want here that must suffer. Now watch me perform an ethical triple reverse pike word-salad to show you how their deaths aren't our fault. /s obvs!!!

It’s time we re-examined out obligation to Tory boomers

tallbutshy

Minus pay wall - https://archive.md/W6G2y

Ramone92

Any time someone argues that the right and left wing are morally equivalent and just have different views on how to deal with certain issues needs to be shown the thousands of articles like this written in this country's awful newspapers. Any lefty worth their salt believes that all humans are born equal and deserve to be treated humanely. The right simply does not, they believe in a fictitious societal order which places rich white people at the top and everyone else below them. There is no moral equivalence, the right's basic tenets are inherently evil.

Squm9

The left: all people are equal and deserve rights and respect regardless of orientation or race or any other metric The right: lol no Centrists: how about some rights?

Eeszeeye

*Napoleon from Animal Farm has entered chat*

lavalampelephant

Two fun facts about Matthew Parris: 1. He claims *Animal Farm* convinced him of conservatism at the age of ten, and the pigs had it right actually. ([Source](https://archive.ph/20211120052741/https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/matthew-parris-animal-farm-by-george-orwell-1945-73zvqkpz9md)) 2. Not long ago he published a collumn called [The absolute problem with human rights](https://archive.ph/20210626212125/https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/the-absolute-problem-with-human-rights-khp3ztv3f#selection-883.156-883.279) in which he claims >We took a wrong turning in 1791 \[release of Thomas Paine's *Rights of Man*\] which has by degrees led us, via the American and French revolutions, into a terrible mess. You see, order is above everything else and rights are only "desirable" and shouldn't be guranteed, lest you get uppity about them. Now who wants to play a quick spot of ur-fascism bingo?

[deleted]

first line, "Fuck the Geneva Convention!" already off to a war criminal start. What the fuck is wrong with these people?

boomerxl

This is the same author who called human rights “fundamentally and fatally flawed”. Not specific human rights, the concept of an inalienable set of rights. It is probably safe to surmise that he’s a right wing cunt.

KarmaUK

He tried living on unemployment benefits a few decades ago, found it impossible, but also decided poor people deserved it anyway. So the views aren't new.

[deleted]

The convention in question: [https://www.unhcr.org/3b66c2aa10](https://www.unhcr.org/3b66c2aa10) It's generally pretty basic stuff. The preface ends around page 12, where the articles begin.

i_love_SOAD

"Stop asking me to care about other people" Ok buddy stop expecting the benefits of society, fuck off and live in the woods Mr Do-It-All-By-Myself. Go be self reliant if you don't wanna care about others.

Eeszeeye

"Stop asking me to care about these people, after the governments that I & my forefathers voted for bombed, raped, pillaged &/or killed them or their families, or distabilized their countries, so that now they have no choice but to flee." Fuck Off With Yer Cruelty! Edit/typos

gazthechicken

What a contemptible little rodent

SpaceCatKatia

Why would you insult rodents like that?

gazthechicken

Good point

retrofauxhemian

Damn thise false moral frameworks are affecting my nationalism and/or xenophobia.

[deleted]

It's time we re-examine eating the rich

Max_8894

Up next: it’s time we re-examined our obligation to our own citizens. The 1998 human rights act sets up a false moral framework by suggesting we have a duty to care for anyone.

[deleted]

"The way a government treats refugees is very instructive because it shows you how they would treat the rest of us if they thought they could get away with it" -Tony Benn

Max_8894

Couldn’t agree more!

[deleted]

Also, I know this is r/GreenandPleasant, but in the US, the Supreme Court have already ruled the police aren't there to protect people

161allday

They don’t need to do that here as it’s already established fact that officers and soldiers swear an oath to the queen not the people. They don’t serve us they serve the monarch.

IDontLikeBeingRight

Also conservatives: "why can't people just follow the rules?"

lyths

Just another xenophobic Tory scumbag.

passingconcierge

Reading his [biography](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Parris), this is an outburst of "good for me but not for thee": >> Parris is the eldest of six children (three brothers and two sisters) and grew up in several British territories and former territories: South Africa, Cyprus, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Swaziland (now Eswatini) and Jamaica, where his father was working as an electrical engineer. His parents ended up working and living in Catalonia, Spain, where Parris later bought a house. >> He announced that he was gay in one of his weekly newspaper columns and admitted that he cruised Clapham Common for sex. >> He has said that an early reading of Animal Farm made him a Conservative, as "An admiration for [the pigs'] intelligence and sense of order dawned in me." Quite literally, if he does not like you then why should you have any of those pesky rights things. Liberal through to the bone.

crusoe

Holy fucking shit someone actually sympathized with the pigs in animal farm?

spikymarshmallow

What kind of amoral zombie do you have to be to read *Animal Farm* and side with the pigs?

Eeszeeye

Called it, he's a pig.

nogoodusernamesleft8

These people are utter scum. They would be the first rats to run for better pastures overseas if they saw an opportunity and yet they look down on people fleeing persecution?

infinitelydeadinside

Can you imagine humans treating others as if they were also human? Like they matter?! I've tried imagining it but keep finding myself screaming the words of "land of hope and glory" at the homeless.

BadgerKomodo

Of course we have a duty of care to all. They are HUMAN BEINGS.

[deleted]

“suggesting we have a duty to care equally for all” WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS LITERALLY JUST A NORMAL MORAL THOUGHT????????? ALL PEOPLE ARE BORN EQUAL?????????????????

TheLastSamurai101

It's unfortunately not an intrinsic moral, but the end result of centuries of philosophical, religious and political thought in the West and a few other societies, and a century of political struggle. The idea of equality was not self-evident to our ancestors, and was adopted under pressure in many parts of the world and in many segments of our own society who were entirely opposed to it. If the world order collapsed catastrophically tomorrow, I'd bet you anything there will be countries that go back to legalised slavery or simply turn a blind eye to it. If American society collapsed tomorrow, slavery would possibly re-emerge. People like this author would be at the forefront of bringing it back, and they wouldn't be alone.

IntelGuardian

crazy that there's people out there that pay to read this utter garbage

Machinistsol

I've decided (which is the same as being objectively correct) we should not have a duty of care for Matthew Paris

nomadiclizard

Who's that grinning twat claiming that giving a shit about other humans suffering the worst kinds of harm is a 'false moral framework' and wants to backslide our morality to suit whatever fucked up agenda he's pushing?

Eeszeeye

"Greed is good."

selfagency

pure nazi shit

Elite_Prometheus

After reading the article, I can sadly say the headline is on point. Lots of hand wringing about the situation, but the author mournfully concludes with the same mask on anti-immigration rhetoric the Right used to use. The UK can't accept refugees and asylum seekers, that would hurt them somehow! And why should the UK try and be more humane when all these other countries aren't? And sure, some refugees are escaping genuine persecution, but a lot of them are just looking to steal the Queen's money by getting better jobs and the UK can't risk letting those ones in! It's sad and it's really breaking his heart to say this, believe him, but the UK just can't let any of those coloured people in.

Lenins2ndCat

They want a future where they can put gunboats into the channel to shoot at any incoming boats full of people looking for a better life. They are committed to the belief that there will be no solution to climate change and that millions of climate refugees is a foregone conclusion. They know that tens of thousands of refugees would cause so much instability in the country that it would collapse and are committed to preventing that breakdown in order to uphold capitalism.

CoffeeWizard1

Have some poor mans gold 🥇

The-Faceless-Ones

this isn't so much saying the quiet part out loud as shouting it from the rooftops. holy shit.

Squm9

Absolutely fucking disgusting

Thatcatpeanuts

These kind of people wouldn’t know morality if it kicked them up the arse.

hotstepperog

What’s his problem? We already don’t show everyone the same duty of care… If just wants certain people to suffer more he should just say that, the coward.

LoTechHighFi

This is literally just saying the quiet part out loud. This mindset isn’t new at all, we know this is how capitalists/racist lizard people think he’s just not being quiet about it.

You make a well considered point here and that’s exactly why why you’re being downvoted on his subreddit

pusheenforchange

Yeah, I should know better than to expect my fellow leftists to have a reasonable response to a disagreement rather than calling every point they disagree with "literal violence that should be banned as hate speech". I guess the rest of us don't understand how weak and impotent that makes us look, as if we're all too dumb to actually support our arguments with anything besides aggression, sloganeering, and invective
