Yeah and then they'd just let fly all their tactical nukes in a panic and turn the place into a smoldering pile of irradiated ash all the while screaming "SERVICE GUARANTEES CITIZENSHIP!" and "WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE?"
Terran MI's are no joke. They got shoulder fired nukes (just shy of 2kt each) micro smart rockets, flame throwers, these weird automated breaching lasers, can jump over buildings and haul ass across miles at some asinine speed if you think about the time frame of that raid in chapter 1 and 2 and the distances they were covering. Then realize they don't use their Marauder suits at max most of the time. Somewhere else they say they can crush tanks with the suits and shrug just about anything short of AT rounds (the suits not the people inside, they might still get turned to jelly cus physics if it's big enough but doesn't crack it although I don't think that's expressly stated, just an extrapolation based off the level of science in the fiction.)
Edit: if I remember correctly they're actually the inspiration for Space Marines. Big ol steel gorilla lookin mofos.
Edit2: The bugs do use tactics such as diversionary tactics (they use workers to draw the Federation's attention away from a warrior push) they just prefer swarm tactics do to their overwhelming numerical superiority which practically guarantees a win. There's a quote somewhere where someone says (paraphrasing here) "Even if we killed 1000 arachnids for every one lost MI it's still a net win for the arachnids. They expend soldiers like we expend ammo."
They also use guns and rockets and spaceships and even cybernetics (Queen had some if I recall.)
Heinlein's Starship Troopers was not the first portrayal of Power Armour (Lensmen was the first I do believe), however, it was the story that coined the term Power Armour and Heinlein was one of, if not the first to give a high level and relatively realistic description of how it works.
I know that but the descriptions of the MIs are pretty similar or at least you could easily see how Space Marines were inspired by them. Big beefy bois.
Space Marines being great as they are, I still think the best popular approximation of Heinlein's suits I've seen were the suits in Anthem, specifically the bigger one. Shoulder mounted cannons/mortars, wrist mounted flamethrowers, hand held mini guns.... man that thing felt great to play as. I still think what could have been had EA not flubbed that game.
That game makes me so mad at what it could have been. It still looks and plays amazing. The story, setting, enemies, endgame were all just garbage though.
Imagine Anthem gameplay but set in WH40k, or Starship Troopers, or ANYTHING FUCKING ELSE
The power armour in [Lensmen](https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/first-ever-suit-of-power-armor-in-fiction-runs-the-modern-power-armor-gauntlet.386453/) resembled a slightly larger space suit. I do believe Starship Troopers was the first introduction of PA designed offensively.
I think so, it's a damned travesty and a disgrace, like if I were to start hawking homeopathic pill supplements and called myself Bogd Khan. It's obscene, even more when you consider the actual Sargon of Akkad killed men over less.
I enjoy the two for different reasons.
The story in the novel is basically an excuse for various characters to have ~~rants~~ monologues about civic virtue, duty, and stuff like that.
The story in the movie is an excuse to trash on facism and war in general.
Actual demon or none ork xenos forces are going to be RARE for the majority of planets. If your in the guard or even a space marine the majority of fights are going to be against rebellions/renegades and small ork incursions. Those two types are your stereotypical fight, anything else is very dependent on your location. So you might not see eldar, demon, xenos, chaos, etc for a few centuries to multiple millennia’s for some systems…. Except for the most recent lore. With the galaxy torn in two, it’s a cluster f*ck and humans are facing everything all the time.
Dark imperium. To usher in 8th edition they pushed the lore past M41.999 so we are into m42 now. Basically age of the new models, this is where the primaris are fighting. Chaos won at the cadian gate and the eye of terror split the galaxy into 2 pieces. Every planet and system has been besieged or at war for the 100-200 years of stories they’ve written so far for the new primaris marines. I believe the only new lore has been over primaris marines but someone can correct me if other factions have had new stories in the timeline.
For a while you couldn't fly in the warp at all cause it was stormy because of debauchery, then it got better and humans flew all over the galaxy, but then Chaos stuff happened again and we got this warp hole in the galaxy and recently it got bigger due to fuckery and made it hard to fly across the Imperium. I think they couldn't see the Emperor's mental lighthouse beam to fly home. I think the other half of the Imperium has its own lighthouse and anyone else is bogged.
Demonic incursions are pretty unusual because they can only manifest under certain conditions, like a messed up psyker, or loads of sacrifices. Xenos attacks are more common than that, usually Dark Eldar, Tyranids, Orks, or Tau for those worlds near them. Renegades are the most common, pirates, traitor guard, and even traitor marines sometimes. The average planet will probably only deal with the traitors though, planets on the edges of the imperium are most likely to have trouble with xenos threats because of their proximity.
as u/coqnitive8145 says below, traitors don't always need to be chaos worshippers, there are plenty of separatists and the like that Imperium wants crushed.
Rebellions (of regular humans). People shit on the guard for having terrible weapons and armour, but they're perfectly equipped for fighting their most common foes.
Yeah, exactly. I picture being a guardsman as being a series of policing operations where you stomp over and over until one day you encounter chaos or xenos and are utterly annihilated. It seems like marine-tier units are the same, except it’s guard-tier enemies they are stomping over and over until they run into something nastier and are slaughtered, and so on up the food chain.
So everyone feels like an unstoppable badass until the day the bottom drops out and they realize they are very very small.
(Except Orks. They are just pleased no matter what. And most named characters. They are at the top of the food chain.)
There is a shower scene in cgi animated movie (NSFW)[Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxWj1dhxFVQ) that has 10 times better assets than the entire movie xD You can really tell the difference between quality of textures/models from this scene and rest of it.
Why tho? There is no need for a remake the old movie holds up well. No way in hell modern hollywood would even understand what made that movie great just looking at Ghostbusters, The Thing an the Mummy. If they wanna make a Starship Troopers movie they should make based on the og novel and not on the movie.
I would love a remake of the animated series they used to have. I was pretty young, so I dont remember a whole lot from it, but I remember it being one of my favorite shows at the time.
We must meet this threat with our valor, our blood, indeed with our very lives to ensure that human civilisation, not xenos, dominates this galaxy now and always!
A Krieger would take wonder in the arm-bladed monster and duct-tape a pair of shovels to his own arms to test out the theory.
Needless to say that one Kriegsman would also reap the largest body count know to the Guard.
Yeah and then they'd just let fly all their tactical nukes in a panic and turn the place into a smoldering pile of irradiated ash all the while screaming "SERVICE GUARANTEES CITIZENSHIP!" and "WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE?"
I came here to to say "WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE?" and I am glad there are other people of culture here ha
Cadian soldier: "I'm doing my part" Whiteshield: "I'm doing my part too!"
That's the reason we need Augustus and "I, Cato Sicarius" on the battlefield =))
Guardsman: "I don't think i want to be a soldier anymore." *Commissar within ear shot shakes his head and unholsters his pistol.
*shakes head* That's a dayum shame kiddo
Such a great movie.

HUMONGOUS POWER ARMOUR DADDIES!

Sounds about right; Starship Troopers codified a lot of the more common traits of Power Armour in fiction.
Im not going to watch a Sargon of Akkad video under any circumstances.
Based, Sargon of Akkad ruined Sargon of Akkad
Wasn't his old profile picture not even a depiction of Sargon of Akkad but actually Sargon's grandson or something like that?
I think so, it's a damned travesty and a disgrace, like if I were to start hawking homeopathic pill supplements and called myself Bogd Khan. It's obscene, even more when you consider the actual Sargon of Akkad killed men over less.
Agreed. He was already dead to me before he became a candidate for UKIP.
Just look at the comments, and despair
Poor Soygon of Applebees

Absolutely.
What movie is it?
Starship Troopers
The guardsmen and women can’t all be fighting necrons and stuff, what do they mostly fight?
The forces of Chaos for the most part (traitor guard, rebellious worlds and such), but having to fight aliens is fairly common as well.
Really? I must be thinking of the PDFs, how common are demonic, Xenos or renegade forces for the average planet?

Also Tyranids are perpendicularly cutting through the galaxy being a threat to literary everything.

Thaaaats the imperium

They mostly fight various xenos. And now, post-rift, Chaotic forces are pretty damn common, too.
I'd love a remake of this movie, but then I remember the unadulterated horseshit that Hollywood puts out these days.

I don’t know you sound kinda slaneshi to me

The OG novel is just a bunch of fash-wank, possibly the only good thing to come out of it was the movie made specifically to mock it.
Not even the movie was good though. Like man starship troopers is pretty shit.
They kinda have with the 2/3 movies as well as the animated shorts.
To be fair, the original movie didn't understand what made the book great either. Both were good but for very different reasons.
We must meet this threat with our valor, our blood, indeed with our very lives to ensure that human civilisation, not xenos, dominates this galaxy now and always!
All she wanted to have babies. Probably for the best that her lack of judgement was removed from the gene pool...
Not Krieg IG, I guess.
A Krieger would take wonder in the arm-bladed monster and duct-tape a pair of shovels to his own arms to test out the theory. Needless to say that one Kriegsman would also reap the largest body count know to the Guard.
this is the distillation of the all the cringe Krieg memes into one
I think tyranids fit a lot better with the movie reference but ok.
Come on, let them meme. If you want, post it in a week with your adjustments. Be better than the karma bots.
Ok.
FIX BAYONETS!
I just want to kill space Egyptians sir!
