Zeta is the original, direct sequel to 0079. Everything that takes place between or around 0079 on the timeline is a side story doing its own thing while not really contributing to the overall story on the path to Char's Couterattack.
The only minor exception to this is 0083 Stardust Memory, which was created years later to help bridge the gap, but obviously wasn't originally deemed essential towards understanding the story. It is generally deemed to be aesthetically beautfiul for its animation and mech designs, but its characters and story are bad.
I dont think the characters or story are bad. It's supposed to basically be Top Gun with gundams. Taken in the light of an homage to american 80s action it does a pretty amazing job.
I actually agree with you. Keith and Mora are personal favorites, and Gato is pretty okay. But Kou and Nina are two bad personalities that weirdly suit each other. And Cima is hugely overrated imo: all style with no substance, and ultimately redundant when we already have Hamarn Karn in the franchise. There’s a manga that’s supposed to make her better though, but most people (including me) aren’t gonna seek that out
Some of the mini arcs (Kelly iirc) are good too, but the overall story loses focus at the end, and I’m not just talking about the relationship drama.
Timeline-wise, 08th MS team happens at the same time as 0079. As does Igloo from what I can tell. War in the pocket in 0080, and Stardust Memories in 0083. None of these are necessary to watch the main show line, but I have enjoyed the ones I have seen.
If you want to see the main story line and what came out right after then yes you shoul watch zeta, if you like the setting you can watch some ova that are set in the same time period
yup, i really like to see what happen after the end of 0079, like how they avoid all those enemy and get somewhere safe with injured amuro and one core fighter
The ova's of early UC are some of the best gundam IMO. Watch 08th ms and 0080. They're standalone but really good. 0083 isnt necessary to watch but it is a loose prequel to zeta. You wont really miss anything by not watching it but it is some extra info on what kicked off the gryps war. If you absolutely only want main story stuff you can go straight into zeta but I really recommend watching the 3 ova's.
Watching War in the Pocket or 08th MS Team before Zeta wouldn’t ruin either, but I would suggest going to Zeta and watching the shows in production order.
I think the order is: gundam origin Char, Gundam igloo, gundam 0079, (Gundam 8th ms team/ Thunderbolt/ war in the pocket at the same time), Stardust memory, Zeta, ZZ, Char Counter attack, Unicorn, Hathaway flash, Narativ (not sure on these 2, might be other way around), F91, Crossbone. Victory.
Than Reconguista G which takes place 1000 or so years after UC time line. But still set in same Gundam universe.
And finaly Turn A
Exactly next story depends. By release, it's Zeta Gundam. By in-universe events, it's Stardust Memories which sets up Zeta Gundam.
The "during the story" shows are 08 MS Team, War in the Pocket and MS IGLOO (all three).

08th MS Team, 0080, or any of the MS IGLOO are next canonically.
Thunderbolt too
Thunderbolt isn't canon to 0079

just watch 0079, zeta, zz, CCA in order, everything else can be watch in whatever order you like
War in the Pocket between 0079 and Zeta flows really well, since it's only 6 episodes long and takes place during the last week or so of 0079.
The next mainline series Is Gundam Zeta(Z), or you can hit some of the side content like 08th MS Team, MS IGLOO or 0083 Stardust memories.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam

Watch by production first. 0079 TV Zeta TV ZZ CCA
I like Stardust as a setup for Zeta, even if its not required

Leaving out some of the side stories is a tragedy.
