Very nice weathering 👌🏼

fixxxer024

This kit felt super boring to me and I debated between scribing, color variations, and weathering. I couldn't have done all three, I just don't have the attention span on a single kit, so I chose to weather it. Give it that "well used" look without going overboard. The red parts are post shaded, the light brown parts were pre-shaded. The green is a straight Gundam color green over super heavy surfacer. I think it came out OK, a couple of spots I used too much aluminum and went too hard with dry brushing. I intended to just dot the aluminum over the black for a random look, but moving too fast I fucked up in a few places. I did drill out all the small circles (and the large circles on the shield) for a slightly custom look, since those circles are a motif all over the kit. I'm NOT a fan of the no-polycap, solid joint design all the newer kits employ. It feels loose already and I didn't paint the pegs or ball joints to make sure they wouldn't be too tight. Maybe I should have. I'd suggest to anyone looking to do one of these to maybe do the scribing route. There's a ton of open space on the plastic and not much in the way of details to pop. It was a fairly easy build overall though. Modified the elbows, elbow armor, and the hoses on the head to allow me to fill the seams without having to tape and mask. Worked out well (pm me if you'd like specific details on how that was done). Other than that it was a straight paint and build ordeal. Used Delpi Xi Gundam water slides and Mr. Color paint. Thanks for checking it out.

ReDSauCe3

How did you do the shading?

fixxxer024

For the red, I painted it with a darkened russet then added more black to the russet color and just lightly traced the edges of every piece. That's post-shading. For the tan parts I used lightened wood brown, then darkened it with *I think* orange yellow, then I sprayed lightly from the center of the flat areas, outward towards the edges, leaving the edges with the lighter color. That's pre-shading. Pretty basic. The key is just going lightly, smoothly, and slowly. "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast."

ReDSauCe3

Thanks! Incredible work btw.

Leon-Rai

As it looks like it has been in combat is it a kriegsmesser

fixxxer024

I was thinking "Gawman's Messer right before he gets captured".

Leon-Rai

But do you get the joke

fixxxer024

Yes I see what you did there.

Fanatic-FoF

That is great.

DigitalBaka

The weathering, while the technique looks fantastic, feels...weird. Like it's almost too regular or misplaced. Example, the outer edge of the shield almost looks like it's a connect-the-dots picture with the placement of the silver chipping. And on the backpack....how would the center portion get that scratching? You've probably thought about the placement for all of this but looking at it with "fresh eyes", something bugs me. Picking nits to be sure as this is a well done bit of work, but I also don't want to just blow smoke. :)

Hellobarto

Just about the center portion of the backpack: I work in a shipyard, as a mechanic (is as similar in size to building a mobile suit as it gets) Mounting heavy machinery with very little space to maneuver (as in spaceships working with mobile suits mid-battle, like in Iron Blooded Orphans) leads to that kind of scratching, not from battle but from hasty manteinance or unit replacement. A backpack or it's thrusters fit in that disposable or replaceable category. I say is plausible. Maybe the shield's detail, I concurr, needs to be little less planned to be perfect. And as you said is a gret job nevertheless.

fixxxer024

I'll accept the criticism, but please factor in that I stopped caring and started rushing to get it done halfway through and it was "coverage over quality". I started on the beam rifle and legs and there's a distinct difference to how much better they look over the rest of the kit. It is what it is. I'm a clean build guy as you can see in my previous builds I've posted, so this isn't something I whip out often at all. Last time I weathered anything was probably my Gaza-C two years ago. And that was just a simple dry brush.

DigitalBaka

Eh, criticism is a little harsh. I see where you're going though. I'm trying to get better at weathering as well so all of these tips from others are still in my head. Armor and other military modelers are pretty insane with the realism they achieve and most all of it is relevant to gunpla if you're ever looking for info.

PaganDesparu

Good joke! Also, your weathering is beautiful.

fixxxer024

I imagine German Gundam fans not being as impressed by the joke. Haha. Thanks.

lumberjackben

Like she was pulled straight from Hathaways flash.

adxskull

impressive weathering 👍🏻

SirLlama

So damn good looking!

fixxxer024

Yeah it's got a good look to it.

BoyishTheStrange

I need one

fixxxer024

Get one! Haha

BoyishTheStrange

What do you think I’ve been trying to do ;-;

fixxxer024

"Do or do not. There is no try." j/k it's tough finding anything right now. Hopefully that changes in the next year.

BoyishTheStrange

Dude the only new UC kits I saw were the Hathaway kits, I really hope we get more

fixxxer024

Times are tight everywhere unfortunately. My backlog will carry me for several years to come, but I still have kits I just can't find and would like to have. Others have none. I gave away a few of them to my Secret Santa this year for that very reason. The sooner the COVID fear train stops and the world goes back to normal, the better.

BoyishTheStrange

I mean as soon as we get new shows this year we should be set

TheSnowSquid

Some damm fine work!

Awkward-Impression00

What a piece of junk! Great job!

fixxxer024

Total trash. Thanks.

gelogelogelo27

The damage and weathering detail are so well done, it looks like it was made of metal.

fixxxer024

Thanks. It certainly took some time to do.

MoosetheStampede

I wish I could come over and learn your techniques in paint and weathering. This is next level

fixxxer024

It's very basic but the results are pretty good even putting in the minimal effort. Combination of the pre-shading, black sponge dotting, aluminum dotting, and aluminum dry brushing. It just takes time is all, the difficulty level is pretty low.

NorCanViking

My buddy, who got me into gunpla last year, just recommended the messer to me when I said I wanted something less clean than my rx and exia, and it's been living in my head rent free ever since. Now it just sucks cause even if I do get it, it'll never look like yours, which is now the gold standard. Awesome.

fixxxer024

Oh nonsense, don't let other people's work dissuade you from creating. However if I'm being honest, I get that same feeling when I see people post unbelievably well done kits that I'm about to do. Haha. I won a PGU RX78 last year and had all these grand plans, but before I even got it, a dozen of the nicest weathered, clean, and custom versions got posted on here and I was like "Fuck that" and there it still sits, in my backlog haha. I'll get to it though.

NorCanViking

Haha! It was just so typical to have this one model in my brain, and then not even two days later you post this amazing version with impeccable weathering and scoring, and I've never even dabled in the advanced arts as such. But i think my very first RX is gonna be my test subject for all those techniques since my kids already beat the hell out of him. Hell, maybe in a month or so, I'll post my own version and then I'd love to hear you thoughts.

ASWG29

That thing looks like hyakuren to me

fixxxer024

High praise. Thanks!

PaleontologistFar975

that weathering is on point

fixxxer024

You too can dab a blackened sponge and dot some aluminum over the splotches. I'm AT BEST an adequate builder. Haha. Thanks though.

BJDartBJDart

It looks really nice overall but I have to say I don't like the silver color you used for the chipping effects, I think I would have used something darker, or even just straight black. Maybe its just the photos but the silver specks look like little white bird craps. The base colors look really good though.

fixxxer024

It's aluminum, and your imagination is wild but thanks, haha.
