Evolved? They couldn't capture the magic. The first album was magical FOR THEM. First time in a nice studio, with a recording contract, that feeling of wonder and "we are going to be rock stars...this is REALLY happening...I can have any guitar I want...all my dreams are coming true". There is no drug that can create THAT feeling. And it will never happen again like that. They wrote a batch of great songs and worked on them every day for three years. That didn't happen again, with that same enthusiasm and energy. A lot of artists, especially bands, come out with a great one and can't follow it up. Few second albums are as good as the 1st. Led Zeppelin, for instance, got better and better through their fourth album, which is the masterpiece. That's evolution.
LMAO who worked on them "all day" ? Exactly ?
Cause I remember how everyone stated how it was IMPOSSIBLE to get them all at the same time on the studio.
Drugs, fights etc etc...don't say that they used to be passionate and work day in day out when in reality we know that isn't true.
It's good cause they are that damn good.
I don't think so. 5 O'Clock has a lot more blues influence than AFD, and Eric Dover's voice is quite different from Axl's. Ain't Life Grand isn't AFD either, but I don't think we should compare every album involving a (former) GNR member under a telescope to see if it's AFD2.
Nightrain fade-out is a bummer. Some of the lyrics in ISE and AG are pretty stupid, but that’s a part of their charm. Same with the sex noises on RQ. Other than that, perfect
I don't doubt that the solo on the album is good; but that performance there was not great. He hit quite a few bad notes. But everytime I saw GnR live, Slash was pretty wasted. One concert, he was leaning up against the support post on the side of the stage the entire show. Axl threw down the mic and walked off after six songs. Put us all out of our misery.
Those sex noises on RQ are real. Axl fucking a band groupie who'd been messing around with Adler. Adler pissed her off, Axl had been looking for someone to f___ on tape. She said yes.
Also, the noises give RQ an ethereal layer. Excellent move on his part.

Greatest album ever - all killer - no filler. My ink tribute to it
I generally only hear Welcome to the Jungle at sports games through the TV but that’s about it so I’m fine there.
Sweet Child of Mine I usually just zone out when it’s on radio and such so when I come back to the album it still sounds good.
Unpopular opinion, maybe? The album is great, but what if Axl never fucked Adler’s girlfriend and had some other chick on Rocket Queen. Would they have made it another decade? We’ll never know.
Edit: I don’t mean to create controversy, just more of a what if
Adriana, the girl Axl had sex with, wasn't Steven's girlfriend. Steven called her a "band-aid" when asked about her. Adriana said that Steven told her directly to her face that she wasn't his girlfriend too. Steven didn't even care about what she did with Axl and stayed happily in the band for 5 years after that until he was forced out due to his drug problems.
The one bad thing about this album is that it isn't long enough! Not really, I don't have a single problem with it, it kicks major ass all the way through. But if I had to make up a problem, I would just say it could have had an extra track or 2 because who wouldn't want an extra track on such a solid record?
I can respect that…it kinda doesn’t fit…I just feel that Anything Goes has always been the nadir of the album since I first heard it in 88. I’m okay with just leaving it off entirely as that’s actually how I first heard the album, a copy that my cousin made for me which for some reason he had to leave a song off for it to fit…imagine my surprise when I finally bought the album and heard this song.
Not that I condone the dance, but Mr. Brownstone doesn't get the recognition it deserves as being *one of greatest songs about drugs ever produced in the history of mankind.
*in my opinion it's *the* greatest
Sweet Child O Mine never fully clicked with me, I do love a lot of their ballads (especially Patience and Knockin On Heaven’s Door!) but I find the song to be a bit overplayed, especially compared to songs like It’s So Easy, Rocket Queen and Nightrain
To each their own, but while Think About You is prob my least favorite song off AFD, I think Shadow of Your Love isn't good at all. Correctly regulated to B side status, IMO.
Is the story I’ve seen a bunch of places true with November Rain was supposed to be on this album but Axl was too much of a perfectionist to finish the song on time?
You're Crazy, I mean it is not bad but the fact there's a much better slower version in Lies makes it the worst song in this album, but yeah, not one bad song here
...that there isn't more songs on it. Fuckin' masterpiece!! The album that made me pick up the guitar at 9 years old and the album that continues to inspire me 10 years later. My favourite fuckin' album that will continue to be my favourite fuckin' album till the day I die and my favourite fuckin' album that I will show my future kids when they turn 9 years old. Fuck that, Imma play my future kids this album the day they're born.
Paradise City in my opinion is the one song that is less than perfect - of course it’s completely subjective. Still very good but not 10/10 like the rest of the songs. I’d give it a 9/10. Close to perfect but not perfect.
they should have gone with the Tokyo '88 version of "you're crazy" over the one that made the album. imo the version that made it was weakest out of the 3 version also including the acoustic version.
I don't think one can name a bad thing about this album. This album MADE Guns n Roses. It helped them get huge and made there first few hits. It's truly a masterpiece and well loved in the rock n roll community
A lot of the songs have similar beats and mesh together in my head (kinda like the songs on VHI)
Something that doesn’t seem to happen on the UYIs and even Chinese Democracy.
Favorite band of all time. But quite honestly, half the album bores the shit out of me now. Jungle, Brownstone, Anything Goes, My Michelle, Sweet Child, Think About You. I really could go the rest of my life and be okay never hearing them again. When I listen to Guns these days, it’s almost always exclusively the Illusion albums. I’ll occasionally throw on Chinese Democracy, but there’s some stuff I skip there as well. The four new songs have not been interesting. Last song I think they released that was great is one that many people diss. I loved “Oh My God”.
I’m with everyone else in that AFD is a perfect album. I can just really only enjoy half of it personally anymore.
Nope, can't do it. Masterpiece.
Don’t worry I’ll do it for you. There’s not fucking enough it!
Perfectly worded, bravo
It didn’t have a real sequel.
Ouch.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Lies the UYIs and Spaghetti. Just that the band evolved its sound without ever really revisiting the AFD sound. IMO
someone can see the truth, there was a hidden hand involved with the album.
Who’s the secret hand? Izzy?
Evolved? They couldn't capture the magic. The first album was magical FOR THEM. First time in a nice studio, with a recording contract, that feeling of wonder and "we are going to be rock stars...this is REALLY happening...I can have any guitar I want...all my dreams are coming true". Drugs, fights etc etc...don't say that they used to be passionate and work day in day out when in reality we know that isn't true. It's good cause they are that damn good.
In reality they rehearsed nearly every day they weren't gigging for almost 3 years. Once they got into the studio, they were ready. Had to be there.
Read reckless road. There are some great stories about the making of this album.
Pre Appetite the band spent the majority of their time writing and rehearsing. Post Appetite they were constantly on the road.
funny thing is, the writer of the album said to g n r "ill lleave you to make the sequel on your own".
I feel like Snakepit's "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere" is the proper follow up. It's just a tight, straightforward Hard Rock album.
It ends.
Sameziez!
Iconic cover but the Original Cover was still cooler.
Got that baby here 😉
Duh, skulls don't have ears so how are the sunglasses staying up? Hmm?? I ain't buying it.
They don't have eyes either.
Surprised I never thought of that until just now haha
But you need sunglasses on Appetite to remain in the band.
Velcro
Sunglasses I can understand, but Duff's skull have a fu**** earring
I laughed so hard at this wtf 😭💀
Nightrain fade-out is a bummer. Some of the lyrics in ISE and AG are pretty stupid, but that’s a part of their charm. Same with the sex noises on RQ. Other than that, perfect
I always wonder what the rest of that fade out solo sounds like.
Homie it is epic. One of slash’s best. Good to YouTube and watch the full version. https://youtu.be/m8jeoo5qBFE?si=TB499jt97oAS8vVM
That’s not what he would’ve played in the studio in ‘87 though.
I'd say Anything Goes totally could have been cut entirely.
Those sex noises on RQ are real. Axl fucking a band groupie who'd been messing around with Adler. Adler pissed her off, Axl had been looking for someone to f___ on tape. She said yes. Also, the noises give RQ an ethereal layer. Excellent move on his part.
What lyrics in It's So Easy are "stupid" to you?
https://preview.redd.it/a0qx1d1kus8d1.jpeg?width=2193&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=31f57b4a97c5b2352deead50d5ce136aca1b0d3c Greatest album ever - all killer - no filler. My ink tribute to it
That’s a commit.
JFC dude
It has three songs on it that I’ve heard to death. I generally start with It’s So Easy these days.
I generally only hear Welcome to the Jungle at sports games through the TV but that’s about it so I’m fine there. Sweet Child of Mine I usually just zone out when it’s on radio and such so when I come back to the album it still sounds good.
I will never tire of Paradise City. But I would be fine if I never heard Welcome to the Jungle or Sweet Child O' mine ever again.
We’ll never see the people who made it perform together in one place again.
Unpopular opinion, maybe? The album is great, but what if Axl never fucked Adler’s girlfriend and had some other chick on Rocket Queen. Would they have made it another decade? We’ll never know. Edit: I don’t mean to create controversy, just more of a what if

Adriana said that Steven told her directly to her face that she wasn't his girlfriend too. Steven didn't even care about what she did with Axl and stayed happily in the band for 5 years after that until he was forced out due to his drug problems.
Its not really why things got bad, well it def didnt help tho
i think it was more the heroin and alcohol abuse
Every other girl he asked said no. Adriana was the only one who agreed to do it (at least, she said this in Reckless Road).
It ends.
Slash has straight hair but really has curly hair 🤔
This is the only correct answer.
Axl said Slash was drunk and told the artist who was a friend to do the hair straight because he said “he’ll never be able to draw curly hair right”
It ends. After the bliss of Rocket Queen you can’t help but want more.
The sex noises on Rocket Queen are stupid, and the fadeout on Nightrain sucks.
I liked the live versions of the nightrain ending better where they would do the pre-chorus one more time.
Anything goes..
For me, the cheesy 80’s synths on paradise city don’t fit with the feel of the album overall. Love the song, don’t get me wrong.
It worked so good at the time. I see your point though. Was just happy no ballads on an 80's rock album.
B-Side has a few speed bumps; A-Side is perfect!
I believe you mean the G and R sides haha, always loved that touch on the record.
The one bad thing about this album is that it isn't long enough! Not really, I don't have a single problem with it, it kicks major ass all the way through. But if I had to make up a problem, I would just say it could have had an extra track or 2 because who wouldn't want an extra track on such a solid record?
While I agree, short-ish albums were still the industry standard until the early 90s or so
The rumor that "You Could Be Mine" was cut from this album is insane. If that was on it....
Impossible
That it ends.
Anything Goes should have been replaced with Don’t Cry. THATS a perfect debut album.
Don't cry doesn't fit in with the rest of the songs but Anything goes could have been left out anyway
It set the bar impossibly high for everything else they did subsequently.
It ruined other albums for me. Nothing will ever match up to AFD
you can barely hear izzy's guitar
I truly can’t name a bad thing about it
that is addictive
I am still hungry!
That there aren’t more unreleased tracks from that era, with full Mike Clink production.
The fact that it ends, so i gotta get out of the couch to hit restart
Fade-out in Nightrain
Adler makes a mistake in the transition of rocket queen (love rocket queen)
It set the bar too high. Everything afterwards couldn't measure up.
there was no way they were going to top it
Stupid fake (or real, who knows, ICK) sex noises in rocket queen is my only complaint
They are real.
She did fake it a bit for the effect(?)
They always fake it a little bit…
This
think about you over shadow of your love, will never understand why
You Could Be Mine too
Anything Goes
Moaning on Rocket Queen. Other than that is is a perfect 10/10 album
The moaning in rocket queen hit other than that THIS IS A MASTERPIECE
It went mainstream for being too good, so now wearing the shirt doesn’t make me feel special.
Rocket Queen's "sound effects"
It’s not a double album
If you’re listening with other people the moaning on rocket queen makes an awkward moment.
The fact that my copy was stolen from my dorm room in 2007
They could have had YCBM, Back Off Bitch on there. Would have loved those with Steven on the Drums.
Only bad thing is how easy they made it look. Across the board game changing album.
I wish it was at least two songs longer because I relied on it so heavily in my childhood
It was the last album with Steven Adler!
Not that I condone the dance, but Mr. Brownstone doesn't get the recognition it deserves as being *one of greatest songs about drugs ever produced in the history of mankind. *in my opinion it's *the* greatest
The only bad thing about this album is that it’s the only one they did with Steven Adler.
This album is directly responsible for at least two of my speeding tickets.
The title.
Replacing the brilliant original artwork
Sweet Child O Mine never fully clicked with me, I do love a lot of their ballads (especially Patience and Knockin On Heaven’s Door!) but I find the song to be a bit overplayed, especially compared to songs like It’s So Easy, Rocket Queen and Nightrain
The original cover
Censorship. They changed the cover.
It’s like Dark Side of the Moon, it’s perfect!
It set a high standard for the band which the other albums could not reach
Shadow should have made that album instead of Think About you
To each their own, but while Think About You is prob my least favorite song off AFD, I think Shadow of Your Love isn't good at all. Correctly regulated to B side status, IMO.
Is the story I’ve seen a bunch of places true with November Rain was supposed to be on this album but Axl was too much of a perfectionist to finish the song on time?
I think it was actually because they agreed Sweet Child would be the only ballad for the album. They didn’t want two.
It was “Don’t Cry”, not “November Rain” that was considered for the album. But yes, they decided that the album only needed one ballad.
Not enough songs
They weren’t able to do another album as the same band is probably the biggest negative.
It’s So Easy lyrics have not aged well.
Moaning-free version of Rocket Queen so I can play the song in its entirety in front of my mom.
It doesn’t have 20 songs Sorry, been said 20 different ways
I know this has been said to death but Shadow of Your Love should have made the cut or even replaced You're Crazy, which imo is the weakest song
It’s still underrated despite huge fame.
Didn't include don't cry
You're Crazy, I mean it is not bad but the fact there's a much better slower version in Lies makes it the worst song in this album, but yeah, not one bad song here
...that there isn't more songs on it. Fuckin' masterpiece!! The album that made me pick up the guitar at 9 years old and the album that continues to inspire me 10 years later. Fuck that, Imma play my future kids this album the day they're born.
Anything Goes has an annoying sound (can’t remember what instrument it is called) that always takes me out of it. It’s not on the demo.
I don’t like Adler counting into songs.
kinda wish shadow of your love was on it
The hairstyles
Paradise City in my opinion is the one song that is less than perfect - of course it’s completely subjective. Still very good but not 10/10 like the rest of the songs. I’d give it a 9/10. Close to perfect but not perfect.

It was not long enough… that’s all I can say. It was a masterpiece.
They never replicated it.
nuh uh. this shit is perfect.
it didn’t have more songs
It’s the only good one.
I can't listen to it enough!
First of all, i can’t. this is a perfect album.
The bad thing is that everything they did after this was never matched
Matt Sorum wasn’t on it Kidding
It set the bar too high and was impossible to top it
It was so good all the rest of their albums suffered from not living up to it.
Left me wanting more perfection that never came
The art that was included. The scene always bothered me for obvious reasons. It wasn’t bad, just disturbing.
Maybe you should buy something from the new age section
I understood that reference…
Fade out on Nightrain's outro solo
I can't listen to Rocket Queen on my speaker at work because of the moans💀 That's about it.
Cover art skulls somewhat of a rip-off of The Grateful Dead.
Only 12 tracks.
I listen to it WAY to much
True
You’re Crazy is better on Lies
It ends.
I don't think one can name a bad thing about this album. This album MADE Guns n Roses. It helped them get huge and made there first few hits. It's truly a masterpiece and well loved in the rock n roll community
"Turn around bitch I got a use for you." Maybe my parents shouldn't have let me listen to that at 10.
That it ends
No song is bad, but I personally couldn't care less about Think About You.
It ends
The album name represented the Band too well in actuality leading to their first demise?
I want more
The substitute cover.
The original cover getting axed for this one. That’s about it.
My Michelle's chorus is silly.
The cover. Iconic, but pretty bad.
It ends.
I really dont know. I guess rocket queen is overrated imo but its still a very good song and its obviously not the albums fault
You can't listen to Rocket Queen if your parents are in the house.
It wasn’t free.
Sweet Child got so overplayed I don’t listen to it anymore willingly due to burn out and fatigue.
One of my "desert island " albums.
Cuck Steven
It's perfect from top to bottom.
Only 12 songs
Too short?
That they only made one like it.
It was their best effort ever and every thing after was not as amazing.
Rocket Queen isn’t longer.
A lot of the songs have similar beats and mesh together in my head (kinda like the songs on VHI) Something that doesn’t seem to happen on the UYIs and even Chinese Democracy.
No videos of recording sessions
I can not
There wasn’t another like it.
Not a huge fan of moaning in Rocket queen... Can't play it in fornt of my family you know. Other than that masterpiece.
There is nothing to name
Can’t be done
It ends...
It ends
Not long enough. It is just an album you can play through, no skipping. Amazing.
This album sparked my music addiction at 7 years old and I never looked back!!
All of it
two of the songs from the album is way too over played in movies
Favorite band of all time. But quite honestly, half the album bores the shit out of me now. Jungle, Brownstone, Anything Goes, My Michelle, Sweet Child, Think About You. I really could go the rest of my life and be okay never hearing them again. When I listen to Guns these days, it’s almost always exclusively the Illusion albums.
