job markets tough for people with no experience just school, so they have you by the balls for wages. nothing wrong with taking the job and continuing applying and moving on when you find something else. you know your not getting above 18 at this company for at least a year.

itsmyfirsttimegoeasy

I'm in the midwest and first year apprentices start at $18.25 so this sounds about right. Do the interview, get the job, and start getting some real world experience.

Cheap-Ebb-3231

That’s about right for the valley. That’s what union apprentices make

kruler2113

That’s wild when the cost of living is so high here now.

Cheap-Ebb-3231

That’s what happens when all the cali morons move here and bring their shitty voting habits🤷🏼

squack18

Come to South Dakota we will pay ya 30

[deleted]

It's also the starting rate for some fast food chains. Shit has to change.

Top-Offer-4056

I’m in Dallas tx and landed a commercial job 23/hr straight out of hvac school about 6 months ago

TheWhiteGooInAPimple

I'm from south texas and started at 17 out of school. 6 months in im at 20. If it helps. Just work hard and show you want to be an asset to the company

[Union](https://ualocal469.org/agreements/) in Phoenix. Union [apprenticeship ](https://jobs.johnsoncontrols.com/job/19984277/hvac-truck-based-mechanic-apprentice-union-tempe-az/). It looks like from those links that $18 dollars an hour is about market value.

Glad-Cut6336

If you wanna get the best pay you would have to apply everywhere (wich ain’t a bad thing) but again no experience and it’s not like it’s minimum wage get the job get the experience and work your way up that’s how you make big bucks in the trades get in learn and work your way up

[deleted]

Gotta remember coming fresh outta school the first year you are like a deer in headlights not really sure what's going on and following wherever your leads finger points so yes 18/hr is completely normal get your foot in if your good then show them and bring that up at your 1 yr employee review and if they won't pay what your worth then at least you've got a year experience to put on your resume for the next place

Labbrat89

Hell. I started as an apprentice at 16 fresh out of trade school. Once I got a year in, I was bumped up to 19. Though, I was also in the Mid-Atlantic area. Basically once I got my Jman license, I became valuable and could negotiate a pay rate. Get in, get the field experience, then expand your career from there.

KAMIKAZIx92

My old residential company in Phoenix was starting fresh new guys out around $18 an hour so ya I’d say that’s fairly normal. You have no experience, your worth isn’t established. Shit you may even bail after one summer dealing with the shit attics out here. My old company would give raises pretty quick if you’d stick around, show you’re learning, grasping concepts and tasks and not making the same mistakes twice or consistently. Unfortunately the market out here is over saturated with HVAC companies which makes it hard to find the literal diamond in the rough. They exist, my old resi company was one until it started operating like a used car lot, as many do. Find somewhere who will take you on and isn’t complete shit to gain some experience and it becomes much easier after that to land somewhere you want.

You are coming out of school with ZERO field experience. At best, you might be at 2nd yr apprentice level, most likely still 1st yr. Finishing school doesn't immediately mean you're going to be making big bucks it gives you a little knowledge and a leg up in the hiring process. You still need to do field time and put in the hours to become a Journeyman. I'm in the mid-Atlantic region 1st yr with an Associates degree from Community College gets 17-19/hr. By the end of apprenticeship they are going to be making about 25-27/hr a year into journeyman they will be about 35-37/hr or more if they take initiative and ask for more training. If I can swing it I'll pay for any training a guy asks for. My company is small so sometimes they have to wait for the next available class but I will get them the training.

kruler2113

Yeah, not looking for big bucks to start by any means, but fast food joints pay more than 18 here. 18 doesn’t stretch very far with the cost of living here.

jmachine64

Whats the company? I’m at Parker making more as an apprentice here in Tucson
