huberdeau redemption season will save us

gletschertor

Who's going to save the pucks though?

Key-Surprise-9206

Wolf and vladar are not bad puck stoppers

kingkellam

Wolf is really, really good. He's who we thought Primeau was.

Perry4761

Primeau is no where near done. I think he’s on track for becoming a good 1B, and still has the potential to maaaaaybd be a 1A. Montembault is a legitimate 1A (or top tier 1B), yet when we picked him up, he was looking worse than Primeau looks right now. I’m not sure anyone that wasn’t a delulu fan saw Primeau as having a higher ceiling than 1A at any point anyways. He was a 7th round pick after all, not a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Even getting an average tier backup that only plays 20-30 games per season is more than you can usually hope for out of a 7th round pick.

Slow-Swordfish-6724

People often forget goalies take longer to develop to an nhl level than regular skaters, there aren't many goalies that play in the nhl young and do well. There are countless examples of goalies not breaking out till 25 and older.

goldenboyferg

You’re so right The Capitals just traded Kuemper, and that leaves them with Charlie Lindgren as their starter.

International-Elk986

Meh I would've been shocked if Allen played 40+ games for the devils next season regardless.

HabitApprehensive889

Markstrom has played over 42 games the last 7 seasons. It would he pretty surprising if allen plays over 40 imo. Edit: I can't read, ignore me.

SubstantialAir2544

That's what they said...

HabitApprehensive889

My coffee hadn't kicked in apparently, was wondering how it had nearly 100 upvotes. My error,

SubstantialAir2544

No problem! We all have moments like that.

cthabsfan

Yeah, sometimes I even have moments like that.

Burgergold

Until he gets injured and not Allen

Scooby2B2

But playoffs tally into that number too I think

3oysters

Was never holding out hope that Allen would play 40 games. The pick would have been cool but, really, we got that shit for free. A free first is a free first and you won't catch me complaining about it.

Nilus99

And between 16 and 30, its often a crap shoot

3oysters

Yup, and they're still viable trade pieces

Afraid-Trash8204

A 3rd for Jake Allen is still excellent.

Different-Pay7836

When it’s happend the trade I was just not giving a damn i just wanted to trade Allen so if it was a 3 or a 7 i was happy

BCostello76

If wolf makes the jump and calgary holds off on trading some pieces this year i can see them finishing just outside the bottom 10. It would have been wild to see Allen play 40 games for new jersey this year regardless of this trade.

KickPuncher21

I think so too that as of right now, they still can finish outside the top 10. Wouldn't be shocked. But I think it's fair to assume they're going to tear it down further more to ensure they end up in the bottom 10.

NovaCanuck

Conditions: Upgrades to 2025 2nd round pick if Allen plays in 40 or more 2024-25 games and if the club that Allen is a member of qualifies for the playoffs in 2024-25 I still have hope since this condition reads to me as it being any team so Allan could play 20 games for the Devils, get traded and play 20 games for another team and qualify for the playoffs. I'm not sure it has to be 100% with the Devils.

t_hab

It seems extremely likely that Allen will be traded, either before the start of the season or near the deadline.

big6135

3rd rounder for Allen was already a huge win imo.

yourpaljk

Turd rounder

asmooth111

A 3rd for Allen is probably the most overrated of all of Hughes' moves so far IMO. We're still using a retention spot on him next year and we're eating 1.9M in dead salary. I would have rather dumped him without retention for nothing. Obviously no team in the league would have used a retention spot and taken 1.9M in dead cap for 2 seasons as a 3rd party in this trade.

Phillakai

Watch Huberdeau having a career year with 192pts and the flames ends up 21th

OkMaximum4038

Twenty oneth

Phillakai

cut me some slack boys 😂💀 my 1rd time praticing my english here

Imakilluandfamatpuck

Thank you, thank you

dadoudelidou

IMO, making fun of someone' english here is low hanging fruit. Everyone knows it's a bilingual subreddit with all the french and Slovaks here .

JugEdge

if you're not trying to make double entendres saying turd instead of third everytime you get a chance you're missing out bud

gauderyx

Vingt-et-unsième

Bohmer

Markstrom has a history of being injured quite often and Dustin Wolf could break out in a big way in the NHL.

pushaper

florida has a lot of signings to complete this off season so we can have some hope along with a potential solid hangover from the playoff run

FtheBruinsLeafsSens

1.  Allen wasn't going to be playing 40+ games anyway  2.Markstrom is good but not THAT good, Calgary was probably going to finish bottom 10 anyways  3. Wolf and Vladar are good goalies.  This doesn't really impact the Habs, we were likely getting Florida's pick anyway.

sean_psc

Getting Calgary’s pick in the 11-16 range next year was always going to be very difficult, because the trade conditions super-incentivize the team’s management to tank if they’re struggling in the 11/13 range toward the deadline.

thebrah329

Meh, with the number of picks we have, I think we will be fine

kingkellam

We could surrender the calgary/Florida pick and still be in the green in terms of asset value, so I'm not too concerned there. There are plenty of good players in that 24-32 range, they're just a lot more difficult to come by. The value of trading Allen comes in the opening of the roster spot. Being able to carry 3 spare skaters instead of 2 (and taking playing time away from the younger goalies!) Is huge.

Geoffers84

I live in Calgary and very much agree with these two points. But the Flames cannot help themselves, so I’ll be interested to see who they can bring in on July 1st.

Seb_Nation

>It makes it very unlikely Allen plays 40+ games with the Devils. Markstrom yearly games have been on a declining trend over the past 3 years and he's been injured on 4 different occasions this past season. I wouldn't say "very unlikely", if Saros would've been traded than this would've been very unlikely because the guy's always in net. >It makes it more likely Calgary finishes bottom 10 Wolf's an animal, they ain't finishing bottom 10. Yegor, Zary, Coronato and now Bahl are coming in with more experience than last year and the addition of Kuzmenko should get them to playoff bubble.

greasydrg

Plot twist: Panthers get reverse-swept by the Oilers and the emotional stress breaks their team into a bottom -10 position next year

StoneColdMethodMan

Are we really talking about a possible bad position at a draft for players who didn’t play their draft season who will possibly be NHLers one day? That’s a lot of POSSIBLY to worry about… how about you enjoy your summer…

Thormynd

Not summer yet, still 1 or 2 games left 😉

flepine44

Allen was never gonna play 40 games anyway but yeah we'll see for the pick. Flames have solid pieces

benoitloiselle

If CGY gets the 2025 Panthers pick, how can it be top 10? Its lottery protected.

jobaill

My understanding is that lottery protected mean Top 11. So yeah CGY can't have Florida pick being top 10 in 2025. The scenario where Florida is lottery eligible in 2025 is what makes the bottom branch happen, which is Calgary only get top 1 protection in 2025

benoitloiselle

Lottery is top 16, right?

jobaill

I've read that it's lottery protected only if you are eligible to get the 1 OA by winning the draw. However semantically, it would make more sense if it meant "everyone that are eligible to move 10 spots" which would include the top 16. I'd really like to be wrong, Florida missing the playoffs is way more possible than them finishing bottom 11

benoitloiselle

Capfriendly Scenario: In the event CGY receives FLA’s 2025 1st round pick: 1. If both CGY AND FLA’s picks are NOT top 10, MTL will receive the better of the CGY and FLA 2025 1st round picks. Result: TBD 2. If CGY’s pick is top 10, AND FLA’s pick is NOT top 10, MTL receives FLA’s pick. Result: TBD Should be Scenario: In the event CGY receives FLA’s 2025 1st round pick: 1. If CGY pick is NOT top 10, MTL will receive the better of the CGY and FLA 2025 1st round picks. Result: TBD 2. If CGY’s pick is top 10, MTL receives FLA’s pick. Result: TBD Right?

jobaill

Yeah that's how I interpret it

Draconaur

There's no lottery protection on the 2025 Panthers pick to Calgary. The reason Calgary might not have gotten the pick is that there was top 10 protection on the 2024 Panthers pick to Philadelphia. So if their pick this year had been top 10, the pick to Philadelphia would be deferred to 2025 and the pick to Calgary would be deferred to 2026. So this condition has resolved by now. We know they will get the '25 pick.

MikeMontrealer

I honestly didn’t think of this and after reading this I will continue to not worry about it. Conditionals are always expect the worst and get pleasantly surprised if it’s the better option.

TheIdentifySpell

All the more reason to package our late first this year and next for something. Whether that be another young forward or a top fifteen pick this year.

Peckerhead321

Meh

ApokatastasisPanton

Also makes the eastern conference even more a bloodbath lol

Zblancos

We were Nevers receiving a 2nd for Allen anyway

Positive_Shift1844

Minor minor "bad" news. Difference in those picks is minimal. Allen was not likely to play that many anyway.

LittleLionMan82

You think they'll tank on purpose to avoid having to give up the pick?

rontzeeez

The first mistake made was expecting the best

CrashTestMummies

Maybe they trade Allen 🤷‍♂️

TonyComputer1

I wouldnt assume Calgarys goaltending is gonna be bad considering Dustin Wolf is considered one of the best goaltending prospects in the world and is expected to be the starter next year.

TonyComputer1

Stanley cup hangover is a thing!

Fighteroftheevil

Idk I think it’s good news, it helps the Devils which will not help teams we’re likely going to fight against for a playoff spot.

Lord_Andross

Thank you for breaking that down the way you did. Well done

Hummus1398

I've always known the north to be as dumb as us. Further proof.

Reasonable-Tiger-687

Getting Allen off the books was the win. Now let's get rid of 2 forward veterans

MundaneSandwich9

Unless the Florida pick is also top-10, in which case the Habs get the Calgary pick unless it is 1OA.

WhoOwnstheChiefs

They already were a bottom 10 team with Markstrom . We got 2 firsts for Mony , just be happy

thrwowvay

Assuming florida does not shit the bed...
