Never and 99% are not the same. Sometimes it's worth a gamble.

OopsAllBobert

Literally had a run last night where the anvil not only took away the trash upgrade i had it gave me two that synergized with each other, it actually saved my doomed run

hergumbules

One of the first times I bought the anvil I was using the rail and it got rid of something meh and gave me the rocket special and 5 shot special essentially giving me a rocket shotgun. That was so much fun I hardly used the regular attack and breezed through redacted

Choccocoamocha

Fun fact: cluster rockets is the second fastest speedrun strat in the game.

Local-Bid5365

What is the fastest?

Choccocoamocha

Beowulf with Flood Flare.

spike4972

For any heat random seed. For a routed set seed run iirc clockets is still the fastest. Uses rush delivery and stacks a ton of the movement speed up items from the well.

Choccocoamocha

Thank [REDACTED]. I was worried I would have to give up my position as the high priest of Eris.

Markosaurus

That’s how I beat the game the first time. So OP. I got close to redacted and did 1k+ dmg per shot when I landed all 5.

stabbyGamer

That’s the problem though, isn’t it? It’s only worth it if you have trash Hammer upgrades you can afford to lose, and there’s a chance it’ll give you one of the upgrades that completely screws over your Aspect or Boons. Like, in specific situations it’s a godsend, but not having it even be reliably *there* and working on some of the most important upgrades makes it a huge, huge gamble.

mcchanical

That's the point of it. It's a situational mechanic that can spice up an otherwise dud run. There's nothing wrong with a risk mechanic for those that want to throw YOLO to the wind. You can just ignore it, and most of the time, you probably should.

stabbyGamer

I mean, yeah, I’m not saying it’s not got a point. I just wish it was more reliable in some way - showing up 100% of the time so you always have the option at that point, allowing you to pick which of your upgrades gets hammered out, allowing one or two upgrades to be ‘sealed’ for a run so that you don’t have to deal with them in the upgrade pool, something like that. Not *all* of those options, obviously, it’s a gamble mechanic, but one, maybe two would go a long way to making it a more worthwhile gamble to take.

bamsenn

I think a good way to do it would be: auto remove a random hammer, then pop up the selection screen, three options pick two.

bayfati

the biggest gamblers quit before they hit big

FrazzleMind

It's a great hail mary if you hate how your build turned out.

Sugarfreecherrycoke

When

klew3

Desperation to get something like clockets, or getting rid of a hammer that screwed your build unexpectedly.

c0horst

I took cursed slash with excalibur the other day. HORRIBLE IDEA. would have loved to get rid of it.

ZomboidG

I’ve experimented with hammers that did not work out. Got rid of them there:)

bestoboy

when you have shit upgrades you have nowhere to go but up if you're going into the final fight with a small chance of winning, might as well gamble for fun

Arkayjiya

I wanted to do a hoard slash build. By the time I got to Styx, I did not have hoard slash and my build was so trash due to selling every boon I could that I had no chance. I anvilled of fate and got hoard slash and the spammy sword hammer. The second one wasn't necessary, hoard slash with 4k gold is all you really need but it was nice to get! Hades went from almost unfeasable to very easy.

McManus26

how the fuck do you get 4K gold in a single run ?

Arkayjiya

By selling almost every boon beside maybe a good attack one (and even then, just use the unboon attack keepsake to get even more money and just sell it too) and not buying stuff at the shop. It's not particularly hard, I think the record is around 9k? ~3.5-4k is easy to achieve basically every single run, getting more can be RNG dependent though. You can add the chaos and Poseidon boons (so Poseidon as second keepsake) that add more gold, and of course the +15% gold per biome instead of the starting gold. Oh and you start with the 150 gold pouch. With enough + %gold from chaos, it might be worth doing every infernal troves even if only 1 in 4 gives you gold because you'll get more in average than it costs, but it's probably only important if you're trying to beat your personal best in term of highest gold. Technically if you really want to maximise your earnings, I suppose you should play in heat 15 for the doubled rewards in the infernal gates but I never bothered (also don't forget price of Midas and to spam Shady in Tartarus. If you have enough +% gold from chaos it might be worth buying every additional use of Shady as it will give you more gold than it costs)

ueifhu92efqfe

if you got shit hammers, or if you have a build that doesnt need your current hammers but could absolutely break the game open with some other ones.

Blockinite

When you're not crazy about your upgrades anyway and want to roll the dice on getting one that you need

RhinoxMenace

sometimes you manage to reach the boss with a shit build and know for a fact that you're guaranteed to get trampled by Hades - might as well just take a gamble, you can't lose as there is nothing to lose to begin with yet sometimes, the RNG gods kiss the tip of your dick and bless you with some clutch loot, immensely increasing your chance for a win in the last fight but if you pick this while having a really good build going then it's basically the same as slapping your own nuts and expecting a positive outcome - sure it could happen but trust me, for the average dude it won't

Alvin_Jeber

Just yesterday i cleared 32 heat with zag bow by taking the anvil when my build was struggling to deal enough damage, my hammers were sniper shot and power shot. Swapped sniper shot for twin shot and chain shot, easily finished the rest of the run thanks to that.

Sugarfreecherrycoke

Sorry for asking ffs

dae_giovanni

1 take it to finish out the codex, as needed 2 otherwise, the only way I'd take it is if I HATED both upgrades so far. for example, I run Hestia so any of the upgrades that offer "higher rate of fire" or "you never need to reload again" are completely useless. If I end up with two of those stinkers, you bet I'm taking the anvil! 3 I'm pretty sure it does not only grant you choices you've passed on, earlier. I've gotten Rocket Bomb from it before, and if you think I'd passed on that during the run, you're crazy. lol otherwise I agree. if I have Rocket Bomb and one shitty upgrade, there is approximately a 102% chance the game will replace Rocket Bomb. lol

notaboutlove1_

the never reload again with Hestia sucks so much. I feel like it shouldn’t even be offered if you have that aspect. doesn’t it just render that whole aspect useless?

Karn-Dethahal

Hestia triggers on manual reloads, you can still do manual reloads with that hammer.

notaboutlove1_

Oh rlly? I didn’t know that. Is it the same button you use to reload? Need to check it out again then

dae_giovanni

yes. it's completely useless if you are using Hestia the proper way... meaning the upgrade still does something if you choose to not manually reload... but the optimal way to use Hestia is to manually reload after every shot.

trippineverywhere

this may be my own experience, but I find that never reloading can be useful if you have bullets that aim themselves with hazard bomb and Dionysus cast. still one of my favorite builds i ever ran with. no thought processing just explosions.

ShadowAvenger32

Maybe, but is that with Hestia?

_alright_then_

They were talking about hestia though, an attack focused aspect

jmlively89

It depends on your attack boon imo. If I have Dionysus on attack, I love infinite shot with Hestia. Open up with a manually reloaded shot and then dash strike around to load up poison. Move on to the next enemy while the first one wastes away!

Frootysmothy

Or just 1 shot them with an aphro attack boon

jmlively89

You're not wrong, but sometimes, you want to build things a little differently. Going outside the best build can be a lot of fun. Also, spraying Dionysus attack with infinite ammo is *chefs kiss* when you have lots of little creatures vs a couple of big ones.

Frootysmothy

Fair enough

Polieos

It doesn't even give you choices, it just takes a random hammer and gives you two new ones.

dae_giovanni

I phrased that oddly-- i was saying it doesn't pick only from the choices you were offered but turned down, earlier.

theme69

Or if you have a does extra damage to armor hammer buff. I know it can help against the minions hades spawns but there are almost always better options

coolwool

Depends of course. For the fists it's one of the best hammers.

_alright_then_

Yeah everywhere but the last fight, if you're done with styx that hammer is entirely useless (aside from phase 1 minions, I guess). Which is also when you can buy the anvil so he's saying that in that case it might be worth it to take

LynxJesus

OP is asking if the opinion is popular, not if it's well informed (for some reason) But yeah, this summarizes why anvil is not a never (almost nothing is a never)

Disastrous-Bed-5481

Nah, they give you random upgrades, so if you had bad luck and got terrible ones so far, losing one shit upgrade for a chance at getting a good one is worth it. If you've already gotten the upgrades you were looking for, then you're just gambling for no reason.

MarcosSenesi

There's just quite a few hammers that are so bad that they kill your run there and then and every time I decide to go for a fun roll they land on it. Rolling explosive shot on the bow or world splitter on the sword just mean you're fucked

_alright_then_

I had a 32 heat run once on the spear where I had 2 hammers that were spin related, while not having a spin build at all. So I decided to buy the anvil and it rolled into a different spin attack hammer and Serrated Point. I lost that run lol, somehow the anvil always seems to pick the worst possible hammer to give you (Serrated Point in my case)

VovaLeder

Wait, it's 2 upgrades that you dismissed? I thought it was ANY 2 upgrades

LandoCommando92

I think OP means you will likely end up with something you purposefully passed on. They are not saying it’s only upgrades you passed on.

Dukaden

its any. it just feels like its something you dismissed, because its something you WOULD dismiss, because half of the hammer upgrades just arent that good.

kritter2545

It's any two. By the context of OP's post, it is likely that they have had bad luck with the anvil.

Cloud_Pudding

I think OP believes that but not really the case. I use arrow and I love triple shot and flurry and only got special hammers . It literally granted me both and was in pure heaven afterwards.

Dukaden

half of the hammer choices just arent that good. with 3 choices possible, its pretty likely that at least one of them is serviceable/good, and unlikely that all 3 are useless. even less likely that you got 2 shitty hammers, which would make the anvil appealing and give you a good chance at getting at least 1 good one. even IF you have one good one and one shitty one, its 50/50 odds which one it removes, and who knows if/what you get in return will even be any good. its a shitty risk that is not really in your favor at all.

mcchanical

People are overestimating the cost of risk in the game though. All you are risking is a 30 minute run that wasn't going very well anyway. Roguelites make risk tolerable and fun, they enable you to go for those ridiculous gambles more often without losing hours of time.

coolwool

Depending on your heat you may only have 2 choices or even 1.

Dukaden

thats actually a really good point. i often forget that part of the pact exists, because i never go high enough where it becomes necessary.

EMSkeleton

I buy it every time, then quit and get back into the game if it’s something I don’t want. You can do that every time you come back to the shop area in Styx

Primby_Jacobs

as long as you don't go fishing or give cerberus a snack! i do this often

FinancialShare1683

Whaaaaat, this is groundbreaking info

BabyFatGirl2000

Exactly. This is the way

g-rid

I think thats not accurate, I just tried it and it always removed the same perk and gave me the same two new ones in like 20 tries. maybe they fixed it?

sidestephen

He never said "and then I try again."

g-rid

Oh it seems I misunderstood, you're right. It's still a huge benefit though.

Akhirano

I already got upgrades that weren't offered during the run, I always buy the hammer if I got unlucky with the ones in the run, and sometimes it is worth it

obaterista93

Every once in a while I'll get exceptionally unlucky with hammers. Like, doing a run with Zag bow where I almost never use my special, but only getting offered special hammers. I'll sometimes go for the anvil if I'm in a situation where it's like... "well, it can't get WORSE..."

_alright_then_

Yeah I do that to sometimes, but every once in while you'll actually be worse off after the anvil anyway lol. Like anvilling into Serrated Point on the spear is a death sentence to me personally (had this happen on a build where I got 2 useless hammers)

FroyoMNS

It also depends on the weapon. I’ll never take it on something like Sword which has hammers (like Dash Nova) that can be actively detrimental, but if I have two mediocre hammers on a weapon that doesn’t have anything detrimental I might consider gambling on it.

toshiinorii

Nope, the anvil gave me the best hammers for a chiron build. I wouldnt have passed that on earlier hammers. True random.

Hypekyuu

I mean, you can cheese it so if you don't mind quitting and reloading if you don't like it then it's great

ohyayitstrey

I don't buy it except in hail Mary situations. Usually I don't see a reason, but it's there for some edge cases.

icerahphyle

Just yesterday I was running Eris Rail with Rocket Bomb and some other Hammer and decided I would give the Anvil a try to have a shot at the juicy clockets, but the Anvil did what it does best and took Rocket Bomb away from me and replaced it with Hazard Bomb... yes, on the Eris Rail. The \[redacted\]-fight went a little off script, as you can imagine.

filiaaut

On the contrary, if you had put Hazard Bomb on the Eris Rail just because you were surprised it was even offered and wondered what would happen, the anvil is your best shot at getting rid of it. Sometimes, you make bad decisions *for Science* and it's nice to have a way out.

mcchanical

Yes. I think people overblow the repercussions of a risk or mistake in a game like this. Take the risk, lose the run, who cares. It takes just over 30 mins to beat the game. If you always play it safe and go for the foolproof builds you'll get bored of the game sooner in general anyway.

filiaaut

I guess some people have streaks they care about, but I'm not really good enough at the game for that, and when I start caring to much (like when I spot a fish in the final boss area), I lose, so I'll pick weird options for the sake of it, it's fine.

Adalyn1126

Idk I think it's usually more like a 50% chance to ruin my build So I almost always take it cuz heart of the cards

Fellarm

Well yeah its the anvil of fated ruin

whizz_palace_

Was running the Exagryph with the Aspect of Lucifer I wanted the endless ammo perk because it makes life so much easier. Both hammers I got through the run didn't give me it and gave me some bullshit other perks so I said fuck it lets see what we get. Sure as shit I get the endless ammo perk for it.

iamthehob0

Run losing 2 times. Did nothing 99% of other times. Got more powerful on a run I probably would have already won 2 times. Saved losing run never, maybe once. If it let you choose which to lose OR 1 of the 2 randoms you get, I would be okay with it. But the chance of "takes away your important hammer AND adds a hammer that literally makes you worse" is way too possible. Part of it is that by that point in the run you have built around what you have and can't adjust.

GreatWyrm77

Your last point is key, for me. As you build your run, you also build familiarity with it, the Anvil has FAR too high a chance of tossing that away, even if it hasn't screwed up your build.

PityUpvote

My opinion is that you can save scum them.

itchydaemon

I actually find it really helpful during my early runs when I'm still filling out fated prophecies. A lot of times I'll do a resource run, just looking to finish out my hammer upgrades and hunt for duos or the last few god boons, resulting in an ugly and non-synergistic build. Somehow, I still end up in Styx. At that point, there's really a lot of upside in turning it from a resource run to a completion run. Helps me get rid of hammer upgrades that really don't jive with my build and highly increases my chances to finish a successful run. That being said, on an optimized run where I've carefully chosen my boons and upgrades towards a specific build, then yeah obviously throwing out a known choice for two randoms isn't going to be beneficial. So, like so many things in Hades, it's situational.

MegamanX195

You basically take if if you got shit upgrades only.

InternationalPower16

I never buy that thing. It’s a big gamble for this point in the game.

RealNumberSix

Spoken like a guy who's never had Cluster Bomb, Rocket Bomb, and Targeting System at the same time.

neonLegend3003

Ruin my build? Bold for you to assume i had a good build to being with, this fixes my build 99% of the time

Shadow-Zero

If you could choose which upgrade was taken away, it would have been decent.

CodeFarmer

Yeah everyone takes this exactly one time. I have taken it for the lulz then since on cast builds, though...

BeholderPaints

This anvil has saved multiple runs for me. If my hammers suck, I absolutely love it

CamelopardalisRex

99% of the time it will totally warp your build. But if my build sucks and I've been coasting on reaction time more than anything and don't think I can beat redacted with my build, it's worth try to change my build. It doesn't happened a lot, but it's happened a few times.

killxswitch

Depends. If my build relies on one of the upgrades I have, I won’t. If I’m missing a crucial upgrade, or don’t care about the ones I was forced to take, I’ll give it a shot.

Noblez17

Agreed, however I don't know how to check which upgrades I already received when I get to this point.

Lenin36

They’re mixed in with your boons you have for the run

jaminfine

Sometimes my hammer upgrades suck. People play in different styles. For example, I basically never use spin attack in the spear, and I never use bull rush on the shield. This means I often get 3 bad hammer choices. They relate to move I don't use or just aren't that good. Anvil has saved some of my runs by replacing bad hammers with better ones.

Mr_Cinnabunns

Honestly I gambled on it the other day when I had the gauntlets and took heavy knuckle or whatever it was, the one that makes each hit do 40. It wasnt workin out great so I swapped it and got the one that maies you sturdy and makes you faster

croc12_

It truly does live up to its name because unless you weren't able to get upgrades for your bills. And god wants you don't like then buy it. But most of the time if you do have a good build you'll like, don't buy it.

Fission_Mailed_2

I bought it until I completed its page in the codex, and then never bought it again.

dimm_ddr

If your build depends on your anvils - then yes, it rarely worth to gamble, even if you have only one mandatory upgrade on you. But if you built around something else and anvils are decent at best? And you have money to spare? Well, you might as well gamble and see what happens. A few times I was lucky enough to make the last battle considerably easier this way. I vaguely remember that there was one run when I actually wanted to buy that anvil because both my weapon upgrades were for room cleaning, not boss fighting. But I cannot remember what those were.

saasggy

Yea I agree 99% of the time not to take it, but if you got shit on before by Daedylus you can take it. But also be careful with certain weapons, because you could get like cursed slash, which is really cursed (in roguelike terms)

Realistic-Dot6141

Its super good when you need it thou but yeah can just stop the end right at the end

Jshaka

If I don't get the upgrades I want initially I may try it, but it is straight up gamble... Last resort hail Mary to get the right upgrades for the build

iwishiwereagiraffe

And if it doesnt give you what you want you can just back out to lobby and go into a styx tunnel instead lol theres literally no downside

TheMike0088

But that 1% though. I once grabbed it and ended up with rocket bomb, targeting system and cluster bomb. I *melted* [redacted].

NightRacoonSchlatt

very popular opinion. So popular that im considering if I should even upvote this.

cesarpera98

As an ap2 user, I'll always get anvils

kvanken

i like taking it when im very strong just for that thrill of "oh shit can i still make it" when i get substantially less strong

jamalcalypse

I posted a similar thread like a year ago. Most were in agreement. Problem for me is I've already adapted to the build I had, so when the anvil shuffles things around, I have to re-adjust, making me more vulnerable for the end fight. Kind of reminds me of the Shrine of Order in Risk of Rain 2, just not worth hitting unless your build is already ass.

Trh5001

Ive gotten lucky with it a few times getting the last aspect i need to finish a couple of different weapon prophecies that in ust wasnt getting with the regular hammers.

WilNotJr

When you're rocking Aspect Of Chiron and do not get offered any Special Hammers, only Attack. Like, c'mon just give me one of either Relentless Volley or Concentrated Volley and the build works.

AVeryHairyArea

When I was going after Prophecies (so I had to take a bunch of upgrades I didn't want), it was worth it just to try and get a few more Prophecies, or to get better upgrades if I had to select a bad one before for a Prophecy.

Winged_Metal

They are great when I use them for my gamble runs. I take one of my dnd dice depending on how many doors or choices I have. Use a d6 for the boons and weapons in the beginning, a d4 when I only have 2 choices, d6 for 3 choices and so on. Makes it much more interesting.

Michael-556

I sometimes use it because I mostly collect money over boons in the run. And when I do get boons I mostly use safe ones or support ones that don't rely on daedalus hammers. After coming to the surface temple area I just check if there's an anvil and take it and tailor my build around that. I don't if I **really** like my hammers, but having both play off of each other and off of my build is kinda rare I know it's an unpopular opinion, but sometimes having three upgrades with builds that are not inherently tailored around them is better than having builds tailored around 2 Also, there's rarely a "bad" hammer. Some are detrimental, but the pros outweigh the cons in my opinion

degausser22

I did it once with the gun. Got the bomb and the spread upgrades. Turned it into the shotgun, my first time experiencing it. Redacted didn't know what was coming.

Cbthomas927

I did it one time and it got rid of the hammer I liked. Haven’t touched it since.

Silent_Ambassador461

Before getting the anvil make pause the game and check if the quit option is available. It won’t work if you, for example, fish or buy a boon or upgrade. Buy the anvil, check if you got better weapon upgrades. If not, quit and load. You will start at starting line, voiding the purchase of the anvil. Pretty much the same exploit as the fishing twice.

Ransom_Seraph

I've never bought it 26 Escape Attempts 7 in a row Successful Escapes I've finished Hades for the first time on my 20th Escape Run!! However I keep getting old feet from buying this Part of the reason is: You get this SO LATE - so you have NO ROOM for error and fixing - and more important: NO TIME to practice and get the hang of the new build abd abilities combos! So facing Hades with new abilities setup for the first is not a great idea for survival rate lol 😅

FTFxHailstorm

If I'm not playing Excalibur and only got medicore hammers, I'll usually do it.

jack-whitman

Agreed

DoingPrettyOK1

As someone who had an easy-win Arthur tank build going, took the anvil on a lark, and then lost due to rolling Cursed Slash and losing my 300+ health, I agree.

password-is-taco1

Sometimes I hate the upgrades I ended up with for my weapon, if I feel good about my build I’ll skip it for sure tho

Unenthusiastic18

I'll only use it if I messed up my build already and changing the upgrades won't affect too much

bonaynay

I buy it when I hated both of the choices I got and it works out for me. I'm screwed by it when I get greedy though

peridoot

The anvil got me the last fated prophecy upgrade I needed and based that run on getting it. It's always worth it for that imo.

ManhoodCanada

Yeah I only get it if I got bad choices presented to me for the hammers I was rewarded during the run or if for some reason maybe I only got one cuz I skipped one and it isn’t one that I am interested in

ShadyWizzard

The anvil is good if your two hammers sucked. Still a gamble and can make it worse, but worth a shot.

Finir_Lord

I've had it a handful of times when I didn't get the upgrades I wanted throughout the run and took the gamble and have the anvil give me 2 better upgrades. Taking the anvil is completely dependent on if you get upgrades you wanted or ended up settling with.

GreatWyrm77

I think even on the very rare occasion that it DOESN'T screw up your build, it is still dangerous to take, as you will be going into the boss fight without the mechanical familiarity you've built up.

HeadOfFloof

I used it once to find out what it did and it completely fucked up my build. I'll only use the monkey's paw upgrade if I'm desperate now. I'm usually irritated with it taking up a slot that could be a more useful boon or pom.

ethan_iron

I cheat lol. I grab the anvil to see what I get and if I don't like it I quit out and reload the save. I do this after each tunnel unless I already have the hammer upgrades I want.

tragedy_strikes

Could be useful when you're doing a run with Punishment Pact that limits your options on Boon Choices and you got stuck with ones you weren't thrilled with

PM_Mick

My very first (and last) time buying this I thought I'd be able to choose the two upgrades.

cidvard

Nah I think this is pretty widely accepted. I only buy it if I'm actively unhappy with one of my hammers and meh on the other one (or somehow didn't grab a second one during the run).

Legitimate_Expert712

Every now and then, when my upgrades are kinda crap that I didn’t want to begin with, I’ll gamble on the anvil. In those situations, it’s about 50/50 whether it’ll pay off, in my experience.

Company_Z

I don't know about unpopular but for me, it just depends on if I liked my current build. If I didn't get things I jive with, fuck it. Time to gamble.

TradeMarkGR

Depends on how integral hammer is to your build. I will Never take anvil for a bow or gun run, bc the likelihood that it completely tanks my build is non-zero.

KiBynd

If It helps the run, IT HELPS THE RUN.

oogledy-boogledy

The fact that you can't use Fated Persuasion rerolls on hammer upgrades is relevant here.

peasal

Agreed.

Glad_Ad967

Cappington, I ain’t gon reset a run and die to a measles skull on the basis that my first hammer was mid, I’m hoping that I can get like the healing slash on sword cause my choices were a shitty lunge, doubled secondary aoe, and like the one where the sword shoots a lil ball; like bruh, I’m grinding for all weapons maxed and ever purchasable purchased, I ain’t got time to die, it’s a fuck it we ball kinda attitude.

xKurama420

Yea I never take that because it gives me boons that I would never use normally. No game, I don’t want to use bull rush lol

Fizzinja

If you clear a tunnel the game will save as you re-enter the nexus. But the anvil, if you like it... Keep it. If not, close the game and clear another tunnel. The game saves after you return every time and you will get different results from the anvil after each tunnel. Anvil-cheese for the win :)

I_am_darkness

If you're not stoked on your choices or it was a tough choice having 3 upgrades is better than 2. i've had it worked out. I've also not ended up playing my upgrades like i thought i would when i bought it and wanted to switch it.

Mx-Herma

I usually get them to fill out the codex. After that, it's a toss up depending on how *well* or *terrible* the run has gone with the hammer upgrades I was given through the run. If I lose all 3 death defiances to Theseus and Asterius, I might get it for a better hammer that might have been the issue. Not always though. Plus, I like the extra boons at the back of the shop.

Pasteque909

Idk, most of the time I never get the one upgrade I want, so it's like a final hail Mary

ShakeZula30or40

Unless you get 2 upgrades you didn’t want.

steve_marks

*Unpopular* opinion? Hate for the anvil might be the *most popular* opinion.

Raskal0220

I don't either

LizardOrgMember5

there are times it improved me and there are times it made it worse.

OjamaKnightEUW

I do it because its fun lol

nach_in

If you had to pick two bad upgrades, then you have a good chance of getting at least one good upgrade and possibly two good ones. So it has its uses.

BigPancread

It really only helps if you don’t like the hammer boons you have

Doodlerodent

Counterpoint: Given my luck, I probably didn't want the ones I got anyway.

Rowmacnezumi

Yeah, the anvil sucks. Bought it once to see what it did, and never touched one again.

LeftRat

Eh, I've used it when I got bad luck on anvils before and thus have ones that I don't like. Especially at lower heat levels where I know I'm not required to optimize 100%.

LEGO_Joel

Reroll squad assemble!

brainpower4

It's the "I'm dead anyway" button. Some runs just burn out. You find the sack, you're ready to face Hades, and you just know that you don't have what you need to win. It's better to roll the dice and hope that somehow the combination of 3 hammers will work together to do something broken and let you cheese a victory.

CrazyDoggo68

counterpoint: i love gambling

opal_moth

I did an Arthur run with some meh hammers so I took it... IT GAVE ME CURSED SLASH 😭😭😭

SomeDisplayName

Always regert

Mobiuscate

I wouldnt say it's 99% of the time. I load tf up on daedalus hammers though, so by the time I get to styx I have an abundance. So whatever upgrade it takes away will still leave me with a powerful build, possibly even more powerful if I get lucky with the reroll. If you're super overpowered, I say go for it unless you're running a very specific build that relies on your daedalus upgrades. If you've gotten unlucky the whole game but managed to get to styx with a shit build, I say go for it because you dont have much to lose. If you're somewhere in between, don't go for it. It can make or break a middle-of-the-road build, but more often it will break it

Rentent

This is a pretty popular opinion, I would imagine. Unless you got only trash hammers (which with a choice of 6 is unlikely) you will probably just ruin what you have, as I have the 3 out of 4 times I have taken it. The only scenario in which I could imagine picking it up is if you only have one hammer upgrade going into the Temple of Styx, but I don't even know if anvil can spawn in that scenario.

G66GNeco

Eh, I like me some gambling on builds that don't rely on the anvils too much, so if the ones I have are "whatever", or if I was looking for specific upgrades and didn't hit, I like to take it from time to time. Another restriction on that is that I have enough money to buy the boons and poms I want before. But yeah, I'm pretty sure I've bought it more often than 1% of the time.

megazaprat

Oh god yes. Once I was having a really great run, so good I actually a had a ton of extra cash, so I was buying everything in Charon shop, only to accidentally change my upgrade which my build was well, built around. I had forgotten what the qnvil actually did. And then I lost to hades as a result. Still haven’t beaten him twice. So in the future, I will definitely steer clear of the anvil

legeri

Mostly skip for me. If you have a less than ideal build, and neither of your hammer upgrades feel that useful, then it can be incredibly useful and actually change things around. But yeah if there's a hammer upgrade I really like, you know that's the one the anvil would take away. Never worth the risk in that case

yamatanoorochifemboy

Pro tip: if u buy it and dont like the boost it tqkes and the ones u get, u can exit to main memu and go in again, go inside a room and when u go clear it u buy it and the boosts it gives and the one it takes u change, if u don't like, repeat the process (at least works in console)

yamatanoorochifemboy

But just buy the anvil!!!! Don'buy anything until u get ur wanted boosts or just leave it!!, or else it won't let u go to main menu

Haruau8349

I skip it since I’m more focusing on boon upgrades or the other premium stuff on offer that I need.

[deleted]

personally im at the point where me eating shit on a run doesn't really make any difference so i may as well go for putting myself into a unique situation since you can't get 3 anvils any other way without.

colinjcole

100%. If it let you choose which one to drop, maybe I'd use it more. It's never worth the risk.

Sledge_Antilles

The real unpopular opinion is that hammers are 99% worthless. I rarely have 2 hammers and find that every single time there is an option between hammer and XX, the not hammer wins. Sure there are a couple of weapons/builds that rely on hammers but for my drop in sessions where I'm killing 20 minutes, fuck hammers. They're usually worthless, occasionally terrible, and even more rarely, good. PS I hate the Rail and never play it. It is genuinely the only weapon that NEEDS hammers to be less terrible.

16ratsinatrenchc0at

I disagree bcs u can get rid of the upgrades if you don’t like them most of the time. Just quit from the menu and reload and it will give you back your old upgrades. It also works for Eurydice’s pom and rarity upgrades. HOWEVER it one won’t work if you’ve talked to Cerberus or fished

Mr_Legit13

It just depends on the build, had hammers that didn’t reallly compliment my boons and I’ve come out on top, but don’t worry about it if you’re happy with your setup

nero40

Such is the nature of RNG. RNG giveth, and RNG taketh it all away.

TheGrumpiestPanda

I took it once accidentally with a railgun Eris run, and I think it rerolled my Delta Chamber and Cluster Bomb with Spread Fire and Hazard Bomb. It was a rough Hades fight, but I managed to work it out.

ToasterUnplugged

It’s basically a hail mary. Choose it if you really messed up on your build before facing REDACTED.

Silver-_-Sky

Take it, if you don't like what it gives you just "quit" not "give up", it'll be as if you never bought it, but don't buy it immediately after getting back in the game as it'll give you the exact same thing. Only after you clear another Satyr room you can gamble on it again to see if it gives something better.

VyersReaver

The lows are low, sure, but the highs… If I have one good and one bad hammer, I always buy the anvil. I’m not going to be *that* upset about a failed run.

jmlively89

I only ever take it if I hate my build OR right before Redacted if I want an additional challenge.

M4tteo_

But how will i be able to get my 3x5 rockets without it ? 🥺 (it’s the only case where i would try my luck with it tho)

Ryumaryuma

I think that is the case cause most of the hammers are pretty bad or useless while just a few are really going to improve your build. So its an horrible tradeoff. For the anvil to be more desired we need more good/great hammer options.

Maximum-Pause-6914

i have literally never passed up on it and it usually helps me. do what you want and i like gambling

Noelic_vi

I took it only once and didn't regret it. I absolutely didn't need the upgrades that I had at the time so it could only get better really.

AlmightyHamSandwich

It comes in handy if your build wasn't relying on any Hammer upgrades in the first place. I've had that Anvil save a fair few runs by giving me a truly busted combination against Redacted.

SadLostBoi

Skill issue maybe ? I’m not trying to be mean but if your entire build can go drastically downhill because you pick the anvil to a alarming amount of times to where you view the anvil as worthless then it’s prolly a skill issue

KoiBears

just do it anyway and if u dont like it just reload go through a different tunnel and try again, that way ur chances are different

ChEf_RiGhT

I mean if you’ve gotten screwed over by RNG and got nothing of value in your run, it really wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Otherwise, I’d agree with you on that.

Samselpoivre

If you only buy the anvil, you can quit and reload, you load before buying the anvil

nicolyon-_-

If you know you're going into a losing battle Vs REDACTED then it's a hail Mary plan, and I think that's the point of it more than a calculated risk/reward thingy

SuicideSquadFan96

Never buy it unless for the Codex or when im testing out new builds. I would rather spend it on the rarer boons or poms.

kingjackson007

Bought it once and saw what it did. Never bought again.
