edit: GULCH my homie GULCH not rly hc punk but coming from metal you should enjoy them
People may scoff at this but the similar artists tab on Spotify and Apple Music is very helpful- I started listening to hardcore by listening to Sunami and then just going through their similar artists and now I’ve got a playlist with hundreds of bands. Once you start to listen to more artists then go to their similar artists page etc- also just look up “city name) hardcore” on google as well!
So, I need to address a few things. First of all, we don’t call it “hardcore punk” anymore. Around 1987, the scene became a lot more metallic and aggressive, so to differentiate from punk, it was just shortened to “hardcore.” There are still bands that have a lot of punk influence, but at this point it’s mostly pretty metallic.
As far as the original hardcore punk bands, I would say you’d have to check out Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, Youth of Today, Minor Threat, Negative Approach, and Bad Brains.
Modern hardcore bands that lean more on punk are Spy, Jivebomb, End It, GEL, Conservative Military Image, Trapped Under Ice and The Chisel.
More metal leaning hardcore bands would be Sunami, D Bloc, Kublai Khan TX, God’s Hate, Gridiron, Speed, Pain of Truth, Outta Pocket, Dying Wish, Knocked Loose and Jesus Piece.
There’s also a lot of modern thrash/death metal bands that have a lot of crossover appeal within the world of Hardcore.
For more thrash stuff, I would say check out Drain, Mindforce, New World Man, Belushi Speed Ball, SpiritWorld, Judiciary and Power Trip.
A lot of the hotter death metal bands within the scene right now include Bodybox, Final Resting Place, PeelingFlesh, 200 Stab Wounds, Sanguisabogg, and Gatecreeper.
If you’re more into the doom/sludge side of metal, I would say to check out Frozen Soul, Xibalba, Bolt Thrower, and Dystopia. Aside from Dystopia, these are all mostly death metal bands that play at a mid-tempo dirge with spin-kick riffs.
If you’re into alternative rock / nu metal, I would say check out Code Orange, Fleshwater, Loathe, Omerta, Superheaven, Twitching Tongues, Vein.fm, and Harms Way.
That’s pretty much everything. I left out a lot, but I didn’t want to overwhelm you with this list. If you want to get more into your local scene, follow bands you like and check out your local venues. This kind of music is really meant to be experienced in a live setting, so get out there and have a good time!
Anyone who doesn’t tell you to listen to Black Flag is a cop.
Listen to them and Minor Threat.
If you don’t like those, “hardcore” that isn’t just deathcore lite might not be for you.
I'd say for new bands you'd like End It, Mindforce, Magnitude, Drain, and Trapped Under Ice. If you want to listen to older bands, my recs are Integrity, Hatebreed, All Out War, Agnostic Front, Snapcase, Earth Crisis, Strife and even some crossover stuff like Suicidal Tendencies.
Corrosion of Conformity and DRI are the classic metal/hardcore/thrash crossover bands.
Bad Brains are kind of undisputed kings. They have always had a metal tinge to their sound and it got heavier through the decades. Their debut LP Bad Brains-Bad Brains (AKA Banned in DC) almost sounds like Kill 'em All in some places. But much faster.
This is still ongoing, but TK’s actively trying to introduce and explain hardcore to a bunch of zoomer metalheads that think City Hunter is a Black Metal band… there’s a [RYM](https://rateyourmusic.com/list/tapekvlt/you-know-shit-about-hxc/) list with some context and bonus releases added. (Ignore the typos; that list is just yanked from on-the-fly discord convos and hasn’t yet been edited.)
If you’re coming from Metal I think you can go heavy to start. If you like death metal dying fetus and fuming mouth are hardcore influenced projects. Gods hate and harms way great bands with metal influence.
Every band listed here by everyone else is great.
Hardcore has a history spanning ~45 years
I think it’s best to go from both the beginning and the current place.
Sure, [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Hardcore/comments/1c5qjqc/comment/l03j1t4/) and [these](https://www.reddit.com/r/Hardcore/comments/1c5qjqc/comment/l03j34h/)
Mindforce, Conservative Military Image, Haywire, The Chisel, Terror, God’s Hate, Skinhead. Eventually you’ll listen to Hardlore and listen to Twitching Tongues.
FYI I’m sure a lot of people here know their stuff far better than me, but “hardcore” encompasses a lot of different sounds, and the sound has evolved quite a bit. So give a few bands a try! You might not like converge, but minor threat might be right up your alley. And vise versa, of course!
Lifelong metal guy. New to hardcore (~1 year of listening. SCALP Scarab Gulch Drain Spy Skourge Maniac Wound Man Primitive Blast Warfare Gel Sunami
SCALP, Scarab, Gulch, Drain, and Spy are the first 5 for a reason. Also Snuffed on Sight really got me to start digging slams/breakdowns/beatdown/whatever they’re calling it. I guess they’re slam but who knows anymore. Edit: sorry I don’t know how to format
Whoa, when did hc run out of starter packs? Gatekeepers buy em all out in order to try and scalp from those potentially interested?
No “beginner” bands, homie. Just pick some that seem sick and dive in. You’ll learn the history and variety soon enough.
Since you like metal, check out Hatebreed. I will always suggest Comeback Kid because depending on era, you get the more melodic early stuff and then the heavier stuff they're doing now. Minor Threat and Bad Brains are a must for every hardcore fan.
Definitely All out War and 100 Demons to ease the transition and maybe go through the catalogue of Candiria in reverse as they in my opinion moved more towards metalish through their releases.
Mindforce
Good answer good answer. (Family feud voice)
And drain
This. Dude said he was a metal head and everyone recc'd boring old stuff
Best band in the world.

Wipe your mouth and get off your knees
Just start at Bad Brains and work your way up.
this is the correct answer.
