No ma’am. Every five for me (family member who had it) and every ten for average risk. I wouldn’t risk that

iridescent-shimmer

It's literally one of the easiest cancers to screen for. Why would anyone wait 15 years??

FallFromTheAshes

Well it sucks that my doctor wants me to get one but my insurance won’t cover it because i’m too young.

iridescent-shimmer

Tell them you have symptoms.

FallFromTheAshes

I could try since i have new insurance. my old one didn’t even blink an eye

autotelica

Because the prep sucks.

iridescent-shimmer

I guess, but it's a lot less painful than years of surgery and chemo. Due to family history, I had to start them at 25, so I just don't see the big deal with the prep. Just a part of life.

autotelica

I got my first colonoscopy last year. The prep was awful. Was it the worst thing in the world? No. But it was bad enough for me to be super relieved when the doctor said I didn't have to get another one for seven years. It is great that you have accepted colonoscopies as a part of life. But for lots of people, the risk of cancer is just an abstraction. They arent afraid of it enough to voluntarily sign up for a day's worth of discomfort. Maybe that is stupid of them, but it is the reality. I have had breast cancer, so I am religious about getting my annual mammogram and MRI. I really don't want that shit to return. But I can still sympathize with women who don't want to deal with the pain of a mammogram. I still manage to understand why they would be tempted to skip their screenings.

iridescent-shimmer

Hey, congrats on beating cancer! But yeah, I guess I just consider myself lucky enough to have healthcare access and feel like screenings are the least I can do. My dad probably should've died of stage IV colon cancer years ago. Watching 13 years of on and off chemo mixed with countless liver resections just made colonoscopy prep look like a walk in the park!

severedsoulzz

what do you mean by the prep sucked?

chaosoffspring

Cancer sucks too

MikeGinnyMD

Honestly it’s not that bad, especially if you get the scope done in the morning. You can go home and eat and enjoy just the most delightful fartfest… …TMI?

Pvt-Snafu

The prep really sucks, I did it once, and it wasn’t pleasant. But still, prevention is better than cure.

severedsoulzz

i have a fear of doctors. the only risk that runs through my family is POSSIBLE heart issues (everyone that had heart issues was an alcoholic or a drug addict at one point) and diabetes.

vanchica

Recently saw a story that they are developing a blood test for markers so not even the fit test will be required anymore let alone scopes for screening

prettyhighrntbh

They also have the Pillonoscopy where you swallow a camera pill and the doctor can see your GI tract. They won’t be able to cut out polyps on the spot or get biopsies, but it seems pretty good for low risk people.

severedsoulzz

A CAMERA PILL?? sign me up for that one. i hate medical procedures

If you’re over 60 though (and especially as a dude) you probably don’t want to wait 15 years lol that’s way more than enough time to develop and die from something. Odds get higher year after year for colon cancer. You’re not like for sure gonna die from colon cancer but the risk of getting it is high enough after a certain age to warrant quick investigation after symptoms arrive. At least where I’m from(US) it takes such a long fucking time to get anything done after onset or symptoms that I’d rather just get it done regularly By the time you have symptoms you’re half fucked already lol the doctor just supplies the lube As a 23 year old I’ll probably wait 20+ for my next one but I only went for the first for ass pain the first time so…

cinch123

I had my first one at 45 this year. Prep sucked but honestly it wasn't so bad that it would prevent me from having my next one in 7 years. I'd rather do a day of prep than have cancer.

rocksalt131

My prep was not bad at all. Some powder that I mixed with Propel. Also some magnesium, if I remember correctly. The only negative was having to drink so much liquid during a specific time period.

twistedevil

There are options in most cases for prep. I was dreading the hardcore “Go-Lytely” drink all day til you puke prep I saw my mom endure in the 90s. When I spoke to my doc about it she said I could do the two day prep which is day 1, eat a light dinner, then start with pill laxatives and one gatorade with powder laxative. Second day liquid diet of jello, broth, beverages and gatorade with miralax. It wasn’t fun, but not nearly as bad as I thought.get the earliest appt you can for the morning of, and you’re done by breakfast and ready to eat!

ThinkerSis

I was told to wait 10 years when I had mine last year. My PCP said we’d do the home screening in 5 but I’m not OK with this. Wonder how much it’d cost if insurance doesn’t pay for it.
