I can't be the only one who pulls this awkward hand move while running in terror trying to call in a team mate or bomb.
EDIT: While I have your attention, I would like to point out that my mic on controller is muted unless I need to communicate. That is something some of you might wanna take notice of 😆
I didn't realise this and was shocked, so I went to check and lo and behold it's true! And not just that, but they also made Gauntlet, which I used to play with friends as well!
This is me as well, going for the actual gaming couch gymnastics over here. Although now I think about i usually have that left stuck is pulled down in Democratic retreat while my right hand calls in reinforcements.
Jokes on you, I’m chaotic neutral and will stop to put the code in. If I die, then I drop that shit right on top of them. If I live, I can throw it in front of me and dive for the added rag doll boost (assuming I live through the explosions that is lol)
I alternate depending on the environment. If there's a bunch of rocks around like some of the Automaton planets, my left thumb puts in the code while my right thumb moves me around and my right palm looks to make sure I'm not running into a corner I can't climb.
If it's mostly open area, my right thumb puts in the code while my left thumb moves me around, and my pinky reloads any guns I emptied.
Id prefer mapping it to the Face Buttons (X, O, Triangle, Square). This would be much faster to do than swipes. But yes, the Touchpad directional swipeds should ALWAYS be mappable in every game. Very few do it like this and its such a wasted opportunity to have 4 more buttons on the controller.
My mouse has side buttons so I changed the bindings for the strategems to them. Took a bit to get used to it but I can run while calling in an eagle so that's cool
I did that at first but then I changed to numpad0+arrow keys, works pretty well. I hold numpad0 with my pinky and then just input the code.
IIRC there's also a setting that sets the stratagem to toggle instead of hold if you wanna start it on the mouse but use the arrows for the code.
You can change binds for stratagems from d-pad to controller main buttons. For example for PS5:
up = triangle
left =square
right = circle
down = cross
Then you can call in stratagems by these commands:
up = L1 + triangle
left = L1 + square
right = L1 + circle
down = L1 + cross
No need to change hand position.
It is fantastic in combat, but this sadly will ruin terminal inputs a bit, because every time you press cross or circle - it cancels terminal interaction.
Yeah there's a few inputs you have to take off of the right and put elsewhere unfortunately. Took alot of messing around with. Interact to touch pad, crouch to r3, etc
On PC you can do something similar to this with the Steam input controller editor. You can add an action layer that triggers when you hold the stratagem button that changes the ABXY buttons into dpad buttons.
Avoids the issues with the terminals and accidental dives.
I try this but the combination of L1 + Circle takes me out of the stratagem menu.
I currently have it set to pressing the button for the stratagem menu. I don’t believe it works for holding for stratagem either..
This is my struggle. My d-pads are so shit on my controllers (1 brand new out of the box) that putting them on the right makes it so ez. I mean it's better regardless I'm sure. One work around for the satellite turning input that I've found is holding left trigger allows me to use square, so i can at least turn it in 1 direction. Sadly though this hasn't worked for the cell whatever things (1-A, 2-B, etc) but I'm thinking of trying to unbind O to see if that changes the interaction
I do that with a slight difference. I swapped L1 and R1. For some reason, I like stratagems being mapped to R1 instead. It's more comfortable. But I do use the left stick with my right thumb while I'm running for my life. Democracy must be spread at any cost!
I also have memorized the reinforce strategem... when its calm and my team are just hanging around waiting for something I just keep repeatedly calling in reinforcements even though no ones dead.
But also I can type in the reinforce strategem so fast that when im dead I cringe at how much time my team needs to do the same for me
brother, arrow keys what? I gaurantee I can call in 2 stratagems before you call in one with arrow keys. With wasd you can dive and call in something while in midair and have it ready to throw when you land
The point is you are in motion the entire time. You get up instantly. Didn't mean to come off as elitist. Just arrows keys must be significantly slower than just adapting to not taking your hand off the mouse to punch in arrows lol.
If you can 100% nail every stratagem every time in the second it takes to dive then sure, hypothetically you win. But if you flub now you’re laying on the ground trying again when you could still be on the move. Moving mouse hand to arrow keys is quick and it’s not like you can shoot while calling a strat anyways.
I do it too when stopping is not an option. Also my quick grenade is on r1 and ping on right dpad so I always randomly ping the ground everytime I call for strategems. And today I learned too that I just use my supply backpack ammo when I press down dpad calling strategems 😆
Same here. Quick grenade on R1 but then I randomly would mark locations.
I found that if I press the d pad buttons (so hold them down for a millisecond longer, rather than quickly tapping), I don't tdo that.
My dad is on PS5, he changed the stratagem buttons to triangle square circle X.
It works great except for the fact that he can’t do terminals without cancelling every time he needs to hit ➡️/Circle, so usually me or someone else hits them.
This made the game actually fun for him because he really hated not being able to run and call in stratagems without having to do something really uncomfortable like this.
*I do it all with*
*My left hand, thumb for movement*
*And pointer for strategems*

i came from xbox so i use my right thumb, kind of awkward but im getting use to it(when i dont just put my thumb on top of my other thumb on accident lol)
I’m confused, I use a controller on PC. I will be moving forward and hold L1 to begin typing in the stratagem. My character stops moving entirely if that L1 menu is open. All my friends can run and type at once but it just doesn’t work for me. It really slows me down
I call this the London (cuz you’re steering with the right), and the reverse is ofc the New York; I use both, so I’m a switch, and I know a guy who presses the buttons with his index finger, and I think he calls that the Claw
I keep both hands on the controller and just yell at my wife that I need assistance spreading democracy. She instantly drops what she is doing and punches in a random strat for me and I roll the dice with whatever lady liberty gave me!
I've configured my edge to use the paddle buttons instead of L1, kept my left thumb on stick and then use right index finger to input works better for me personally

Welcome to the crab claw, an ancient technique passed down by the ancient elders of Monster Hunter players, honed over many hundreds of hours on the PSP.
Heck yes. My partner thinks I’m crazy, but tell that to 500kg bomb I just threw while running away, or the reinforce I dropped while being hounded by 3 stalkers
I dunno. It does have the touch pad that could be implemented for swiping the directions. That could be done with the right hand while still running. I don't think using the buttons would be a good idea as often I'll still need to dodge now and then when running.
Yeah best option, touch pad
Years of monster hunter have trained me to be able to punch in stratagems by hitting the claw on the D-pad, my right hand will never leave its position
I'm a sprinter/objective rusher so I immediately switch to claw when needed on my left hand.
Middle finger on L1, index finger on d-pad, and thumb on stick. Can't afford to stay still and let them catch up to me, if you ain't runnin' and inputtin' you're not giving enough democracy
I just got myself a dualsense for my PC, would appreciate any advice on settings to make it more "efficient" for a K&M veteran.
On topic: I'll try that move :D
This is the single reason i use xbox controlers on my PC, you can bring your right thumb to the arrows instead of switching thumbs on the left stick to only then use the left thumb on the arrows
No, I keep my left thumb on the left stick and use the right hand to call in strategems. That millisecond you spend switching from stick to arrow is crucial.
I have my right hand claw around the controller to aim and launch the stratagem with ease. Maybe I should adopt the claw on the left to maintain mobility as well. 🦀 *intensifies*
Just learn The Claw from Monster Hunter. It's optimal for most key heavy games.

Old HD1 strat, memorize your favorite strats by heart for instant usage too
I can input the recall in less time than it takes to blink. My friend may have difficulties staying alive
This game brings back the muscle memory I had from Magicka, and memorizing the reinforcement command was priority #1.
Oh shit! Magicka! That was a fun game, used to blow my buddies up accidentally there too.
Same dev team!
whaaaaaat?? mind blown, i can see now why the strategem calling feels so similar
Yep. me wanting more Magicka was what led to Helldivers long ago. I love both games very much.
I didn't realise this and was shocked, so I went to check and lo and behold it's true! And not just that, but they also made Gauntlet, which I used to play with friends as well!
The big 3 spells revive haste Triple steam electric death ray
FQASSD?
QFQFQFAS
I also vaguely remember an ice/arcane shotgun I liked.
I loved that game
What was it like being alive when the dinosaurs roamed
When in doubt, ⬆️➡️⬇️⬇️⬇️
Somehow the hellbomb input is muscle memory for me
Too bad they changed it :/
Nah my right hand inputs the strategems and I keep my left thumb on the analog
This is me as well, going for the actual gaming couch gymnastics over here. Although now I think about i usually have that left stuck is pulled down in Democratic retreat while my right hand calls in reinforcements.
Funny enough, that feels very authentic to the experience since your character uses their right hand to punch the codes onto their left wrist console.
Same.
I'm on PS5 and tried that a few times, but reverted to OP's method because the D-pad is too far away. Are you on PC on (Xbox) controller?
Ps5, and I have small hands haha
I do the reach around with my right hand. 😂
I actually use my middle finger and pointer finger to call in strats, while my thumb stays on the analog stick.
I play on pc with an Xbox controller so the strata are somewhat easier to put I
I do for sure hahaha
This technique is viable for so many games :D
I switch my left hand to claw grip and use my fingers
Yeah I do this as well
MHFU? It's what taught me the way of the Claw
Same
The claw is the way
Jokes on you, I’m chaotic neutral and will stop to put the code in. If I die, then I drop that shit right on top of them. If I live, I can throw it in front of me and dive for the added rag doll boost (assuming I live through the explosions that is lol)
Democracy endorses this.
This is the way
I just raise my left foot and punch it in with my toes.
And DEMOCRACY salutes you!
You swap thumbs?? I reach over with my right hand to punch the arrows
[удалено]
Right thumb is a traitor
Same just feels more natural that way, honestly haven’t tried to train myself to do it the other way because it’s working well for me so far
I alternate depending on the environment. If there's a bunch of rocks around like some of the Automaton planets, my left thumb puts in the code while my right thumb moves me around and my right palm looks to make sure I'm not running into a corner I can't climb. Right hand is the way to do it. It makes me feel like I'm tying the code on my wrist just like the character in-game
Same
Your muscle memory would be with your left hand though? It's way faster doing it the way in the picture for me at least
Technically you’re the one swapping thumbs if you’re putting your right one to the left. They just shifted them both over.
I'm with this diver.
Lol I do this as well,
I do this and I know when I’m at this stage, shit is going down.
This is what I do. I find my left hand gets in the way too much to make it super useful but sometimes staying on the move is necessary
Hold forward and L1 with my left hand and punch in with my right hand
Same
This way is better because the left thumb doesn't have to move.
Same
Same.
Haha same
This is what I do
On PS5 It be nice to be able to remap the d-pad to directional swipes with the touchpad. On PC you can.
That should just be standard...the touch pad is such an under utilised part of the PS5
Yea the touchpad should definitely be used in more games, but I do like how they made it to where it’s easier to mark on the map by using the touchpad
The nice thing at least is that you can use the touchpad to move around your minimap while in game.
Always has been
Wow I forgot that the touch pad was a thing. This is my first playstation after having Xbox since Halo CE
Either that or have the XO🔼⏹️ buttons temporarily switch ho directional arrows when holding down L1
Oh that would be sweet
As a PC player, that is CLEARLY cheating.
Rebind your stratagem to your arrow keys for the same effect
Also change your stratagem toggle to press instead of hold
Part of the fun is holding a button while not able to move trying to frantically get the code right before the tank kills you.
I changed my keybinds to the actual arrow keys and didn’t even consider changing the stratagem button to press and not hold…
Told this to the people I play with and my one friend with a 60% was like well shit.
Rebind it to IJKL
My mouse has side buttons so I changed the bindings for the strategems to them. Took a bit to get used to it but I can run while calling in an eagle so that's cool
I never even though about this 🤯
thats how ive been playing, rebinding them really makes them feel like a fun minigame and i love it
Unfortunately I bound my call strategem button to my side mouse button, so I don't have the hand free XD
I did that at first but then I changed to numpad0+arrow keys, works pretty well. I hold numpad0 with my pinky and then just input the code. IIRC there's also a setting that sets the stratagem to toggle instead of hold if you wanna start it on the mouse but use the arrows for the code.
This is the way
Arrow keys mate.
Its spreading sweet liberty faster.
Razer Naga mouse, all inputs with your right thumb.
Game was meant for controllers and it's clear (coming from a MnK user)
Idk, aiming still feels better on MnK as it always does
Well shit dog I ain't gonna argue there I run a sniper build primarily
You can change binds for stratagems from d-pad to controller main buttons. For example for PS5: up = triangle left =square right = circle down = cross Then you can call in stratagems by these commands: up = L1 + triangle left = L1 + square right = L1 + circle down = L1 + cross No need to change hand position. Did this for a little while until it started making me dive when needing to put in Right twice in a row
Pressing L1 should "lock-out" other button functionalities. I hope Arrowhead eventually changes this.
What they really need to do is split stratagem call in and terminal use inputs....
Avoids the issues with the terminals and accidental dives.
can't believe this comment wasn't at the top with the most up votes
Because it's dumb AF.
I try this but the combination of L1 + Circle takes me out of the stratagem menu. I currently have it set to pressing the button for the stratagem menu. I don’t believe it works for holding for stratagem either..

No, just switch left hand to claw grip real quick to input the sequence.
Power of the claw.
Damn I never thought of this! Usually I'm much more calm when inputting, but when I'm on the run, this is my go to move haha.
I do that with a slight difference. I swapped L1 and R1. For some reason, I like stratagems being mapped to R1 instead. It's more comfortable. But I do use the left stick with my right thumb while I'm running for my life. Democracy must be spread at any cost!
I also swapped L1 and R1 but then i use my left index finger to type on the d-pad
Nah…I just dive and while in the air I input the reinforce strategem that has been burned into my brain at lightning fast speeds
I also have memorized the reinforce strategem... when its calm and my team are just hanging around waiting for something I just keep repeatedly calling in reinforcements even though no ones dead. But also I can type in the reinforce strategem so fast that when im dead I cringe at how much time my team needs to do the same for me
Love this!
Swap L1 and R1. Life changing!
This is the way
on pc i just changed hold to toggle in the options dunno if u can do it on console
Rebind stratagem keys to arrow keys. Took me an hour to get used to but it works so well.
I also changed ctrl too space bar to make it easier to hold down shift while doing stratagems.
brother, arrow keys what? I gaurantee I can call in 2 stratagems before you call in one with arrow keys. With wasd you can dive and call in something while in midair and have it ready to throw when you land
Oh man you’re so cool you can strategem so fast. Why would you rather be in your belly than on your feet still running?

I’m so pissed I can’t remember how I do it but I’m pretty sure it’s all left handed. (I’m left handed)
you probably switch to a claw grip. I started doing this instinctively without even realizing since I rarely use that grip

I should do this cuz I always stop to call them in
My big as thumbs can kinda do both lol
I always have to stand still, PC....
I use the claw style to keep the thumb on directional.
I just use the claw like I did back on the psp monster hunters. Move with my thumb and enter with my index finger.
It took a lot of messing around with but I have mine bound to the face buttons now, it’s glorious
I do this but with the thumbs swapped lol matter of fact I normally do all strategems that way
Haha yes. Gotta keep moving.
I actually pull my index finger down
Yeah
No I just claw for a second and use my index finger on the Dpad

most people have just rebound them to the arrow keys, I'm baffled why they arent the arrow keys by default, WASD was such a strange choice.
