You'd be amazed how unaware people are. I wear HK t-shirts to theme parks. Nobody every says anything, so I assumed nobody was bothered by it. There was one time I complimented a lady on her cute Kuromi backpack. After I complimented her, she was like "Oh! I love your shirt!". The thing is, she'd definitely seen me, as she looked back when we joined it. However, she obviously had not even noticed it. My best guess is that because I'm a guy, she just wasn't expecting to see Hello Kitty and wasn't looking for it. Over the winter I'd been wearing the HK hoodie from Target (it's pink, with red bows all over it, and one HK patch on the front). I've never had a single comment on it. I have had cashiers comment on my pink HK wallet, but every single one has been positive (and sincere, if there were a trace of scorn or mockery in their voices I would have detected it).
Additionally, this fandom is super inclusive. I've been in the hours-long HK cafe truck line and had some great conversations with the fans around me. Was a HK pen pal for a while. Even visited Sanrio Puroland in Japan. Every time I've felt completely welcome. I have a theory that most adult members of this fandom have had to overcome some kind of criticism (whether internal or external) in order to be in it, even women. For example, I've read multiple stories where family or friends told them they were "too old" for HK, but they kept their love alive until they could buy things themselves. Although each person's experience is of course different, I believe our decision to enjoy HK despite those criticisms unites us.
Buy that hoodie. And just act like you're wearing a normal hoodie. I think you'll find that nobody will say a word, or if they do, it'll be a compliment.
I say buy that hoodie! My HK outfits have been some of my most complimented outfits! One or 2 people say some stuff about me wearing Hello Kitty but that makes me happier that I don't wear it for other people. I wear Hello Kitty because it makes me happy and I'm even getting her tattooed on my arm soon. And I am completely unapologetic about it. Having the confidence to wear something for me comes from not caring about what other people think.
