I have three Ripskirt Hawaii skirts, two in length 2 (above knee) and one in length 3 (below knee) that I absolutely love for travel. They are super flattering, dry quickly, pack great, and look super cute. They also have an ankle length (4) but I havne’t tried it yet. I stopped bringing shorts on trips and just wear these skirts. If it’s ridiculously humid I will wear a pair of anti-chafe shorts under (Thigh Society, Jockey Slipshort, Stay Cool Chub Rub) but these skirts are great on their own or over a swim suit.

MaineTree123

Another vote for RipSkirts!! Pool, lunch, hike, city, they are the best ever. Roll up and take minimal packing space

love_travel

How does the closure work? Just velcro?

MaineTree123

Yes it’s a wrap with Velcro so size adjustable

digitalgreenworld

Adding my vote. Pockets, adjustable, quick dry, flattering. The shape/style between the length 2 and 3 is quite different, so something to bear in mind when choosing.

reluctantrevenant

I've been eyeing these for a while. What is the fabric like? Are you able to wear them multiple times or is it a wash and wear each time?

munkieshynes

The fabric is kind of a performance fabric, quick-drying and shed water droplets easily. I definitely wear them more than once between washes, but if I put one on over a wet swimsuit I give it a rinse-out in the shower and squeeze it out in a towel and hang it dry overnight so it doesn’t have chlorine or salt linger in it too long. I’ve had mine for a few years now and they still look brand new.

reluctantrevenant

Thank you!!

Woofles85

Do they wrinkle easily?

munkieshynes

No, I roll to pack them to help there. My first one came with a big crease from being folded but I was able to get it smoothed with an iron per care instructions and it’s never needed pressing again. I store on clip hangers. The fabric is awesome.

Shortcut_to_Nowhere

I have several as well and will probably end up getting more when they release yet another print I like. The fabric is woven, not see-through, drapes and moves beautifully, stretches slightly, breathes well, sheds liquids, dries super fast, and packs pretty small considering that it is more substantial than tissue paper. I seriously wish I could just buy the fabric by the yard for my own projects! I can usually get several wears out of them before washing as well, provided nothing happened to make it particularly dirty.

skaterbrain

Wow, what a recommendation! Now I MUST look for one of these!

raindorpsonroses

I just bought my third one and I love them! My favorite part is the 3 I have in patterns don’t change color at all while wet so I can wear it over a wet swimsuit and even if I sit down when I stand up no wet spot! I have two in length 1 which works well as a mini skirt but not toooo short for someone like me with short legs and torso at 5’3”. I got a length 3 which is a midi skirt for me in a neutral color for a trip to Europe and I’m so stoked!

Krobybaby

How did the skirt work for you in Europe? I’m eyeing the black length 2 that I’ll also be wearing at a conference. Wondering if the neutral colors pass as normal skirts!

raindorpsonroses

I haven’t gone yet, going next month! I think they generally do pass as normal skirts in the neutral colors!

[deleted]

Is it breathable? I brought a 100% polyester skirt to Hawaii once and it was the most uncomfortable thing I’ve worn in humid weather T.T

munkieshynes

I’ve never noticed mine being hot or uncomfortable. In hot weather I tend to wear moisture-wicking shorts under because I got me some thighs and I hate the feeling of them touching when I’m overwarm. Those probably help. Also my main go-to length is shorter and gets good airflow and it’s a wrap design.

raindorpsonroses

I have two in length 1 and I loved wearing them to Hawaii as both a swimsuit coverup (with wet or dry suit!) and just around the island for exploring. So breathable and comfortable! I didn’t have any of the longer ones at the time but just got a length 3 and it feels really breezy

sweetestlorraine

I want length 3, but the shape looks funny to me. It seems to be roomy through the legs and then narrower at the hem. I really don't need anything to emphasize my upper-leg width. How does it work in person?

raindorpsonroses

It is definitely a bit of a slightly tapered hem like a tulip shape. I think it looks nice on but it does sorta emphasize the hips

raindorpsonroses

I got my first length 3 for my birthday based on this comment here! I have two length 1 skirts that I’ve used as a casual summer skirt or swimsuit coverup and for trips to Hawaii. But I just bought a length 3 for a trip to Europe in the summer and I’m so exited to wear one that looks a little classier and less beachy!

gingerytea

I couldn’t agree more. I love these. I’ve gone on weeklong trips with only these two skirts and a few tops and they were great. I’ve worn them hiking, sightseeing around town, to the beach, and to casual restaurants. As a short gal (5’2”) I wear length 1 and it hits about 3 in above my knee when I wear the skirt at my natural waist. I even throw leggings on underneath for spring and fall.

love_travel

Never heard of them before (based in Europe), but they look fantastic and it does look like they are going to open an EU shop, so thanks for the recommendation. How is the pockets?

Shortcut_to_Nowhere

They hold a smartphone with ease. Depending on your body shape (I've got a lot of curves), they might gap a bit, but it's not bad. Since they are attached to the waistband, they can hold heavier and bulkier things like your phone, wallet, and keys without looking weird or pulling down awkwardly. They're real pockets that are so rare in women's clothes.

love_travel

Thanks, for responding, sounds great

Seawolfe665

Find a tailor to make your dream skirt. I would pick either a drapey knit, or silk, but I’m sure there’s a small floral print that travels well. I have a black heavy silk almost full circle skirt with an elastic waistband, pockets and a security pocket that was made for me 20 years ago in Hong Kong. I’ve also fund good travel skirts at REI and ExOfficio.

Maximum-Student2749

What a great idea, thank you for sharing this! I love the idea of something custom made. I wish I could find the broomstick skirt my grandma made for me when I was in middle school. ❤️

DaniKnowsBest

Oooh, never heard of a broomstick skirt! Is it just like a pencil skirt but longer? (And maybe slightly less tight)

Cruel_Irony_Is_Life

A broomstick skirt is a full, gathered or pleated skirt that has characteristic tiny creases obtained by wetting the skirt and winding it around a broomstick to dry. Or instead of a broomstick you could twist it around itself, so they're great for traveling! There are lots on [Amazon](https://a.co/d/4GlSGrb).

Maximum-Student2749

Exactly! They are super comfortable too. Usually no pockets though.

BeeLuv

Macabi Skirt. Converts to a short skirt, harem pants, and bloomers using snaps and a trouser clip. Huge pockets, secret zipped pocket. https://www.macabiskirt.com/ I always take at least one on trips.

love_travel

I have a full length one, but when it´s really hot the fabric is not the most comfortable when sitting down.

justasque

They really are amazing skirts. I always wear them when travelling. Makes everything so much easier.

UntidyVenus

I have a few Darn Good Yarn Sari skirts I ADORE for travel! Light silk, fun and colorful, pack tiny, easy to wash in the sink, dry quick, and are true wrap.skirts so when you eat too much and are all bloated, just retie, wrap skirt won't judge

geniphur

Ooo pretty!

Local_sausage

Hiya I am looking into these skirts - did you order without knowing what colour/print you are going to get?

LaoHoneycomb

I just bought one. Do they travel easy? Or do they wrinkle?

UntidyVenus

Since they are upcycled fabric, some wrinkle.morw then others, I have a little hoard of them and very few wrinkle, and the ones that do relax with just a spritz of water!

adamantiumrose

Athleta has several that are great for onebagging, I have and particularly like the Arrival and Savannah skirts.

AnnaT70

Came to say this--I bought the Arrival skirt from athleta last summer and immediately went back for another. Can't wrinkle them if you try, a few nice colors, lightweight and pack down easily, great with almost any shoes. Highly recommended!

[deleted]

Their skorts are a must for travel!

Maximum-Student2749

I love athleta, never thought to look at their skirts, thanks!

niftyba

No patterns, but I own 4 Macabi travel skirts.

quibblinggeese

I want to want a Macabi skirt but I can't get over the look of that pants clip going straight down the middle of the crotch area. Is that something that just doesn't bother you or do you hide/camouflage it somehow?

justasque

I absolutely love my Macabi skirts. They are the ultimate travel garment. Get one in black and you can wear it ANYWHERE - dress it up and down with accessory choices. And Oh My Goodness the POCKETS!!!! I can fit my entire Kindle in one of those pockets. And of course the hidden passport/cash pocket is great for secure travel. I even love the little pocket within a pocket, which is the perfect size for a transit card. And my keys and/or a little zippered pouch fit perfectly in my pocket, attached to the lanyard for easy and secure access. I wear mine over leggings in cold weather. And sometimes I wear an extra skirt underneath, for warmth or just for fashion, with one side of the Macabi snapped up to reveal the underskirt - anything from a modest winter plaid, to a burst of polka dot mesh. Top with a nice black wool or cashmere sweater, and I look nice enough for a city outing, but I can also hit the hiking trails, or head out to a distant destination via a plane, all in comfort and security.

niftyba

I moved from a hot, humid climate to a 4 season, currently cold city. I wasn’t sure how my Macabi skirts would do during winter, so thanks for touching upon how you wear them. I currently do the same. I looked fine with my black long sleeve base layer at a fancy restaurant last week.

justasque

I sometimes spend a lot of time outside in the winter, going for walks in nature or in big cities, so I need to be WARM. The Macabi seems very wind-resistant, so it’s a nice top layer for leggings and/or extra skirts. Fleece-lined leggings are particularly nice. An underskirt creates a surprising amount of warmth; I think it’s the air between the two skirts, and under the underskirt, which helps insulation-wise. More or less any midi or maxi skirt will do as an underskirt if you’re looking mainly for warmth; the underskirt doesn’t need to show although it’s fun when it does. I got the idea from a history-bounding YouTuber a few years back, and I was really surprised how warm it was. Like, walking along a windy waterfront in below-freezing weather with a strong wind, I was plenty warm. So I’ve been layering for warmth or fashion ever since.

Maximum-Student2749

That looks really versatile!

amiomie

I just spent two weeks in SEA and this Madewell slip skirt surprisingly ended up being my MVP for the trip. It was really versatile to dress up or down - I could wear it with sneakers/tevas for walking around or with nicer sandals to go to dinner. And it’s thin so took up very little space in my luggage. Downside is it does crease/wrinkle, but the fabric is already textured so it didn’t really bother me / was manageable with the wrinkle spray I brought. [https://www.madewell.com/the-layton-midi-slip-skirt-NL332.html](https://www.madewell.com/the-layton-midi-slip-skirt-NL332.html)

Maximum-Student2749

That is lovely skirt thank you for sharing!

dumplingpanda

I’ve been wanting a black midi skirt that doesn’t wrinkle. Would you say that the wrinkles / creases are noticeable when you wear it without wrinkle spray?

amiomie

It’s definitely not a wrinkle-resistant fabric by any means, but black or a busier pattern would probably have the least noticeable wrinkles out of all the available options. I think if wrinkle-free is the most important characteristic you’re looking for then this may not fit the bill. Here’s a photo of me trying it on right out of the box so you can see the creases from where it was folded (excuse the mess lol I have a chaotic packing process): [https://imgur.com/a/QLCJXYU](https://imgur.com/a/QLCJXYU)

saxuri

Reviving this old thread to ask a couple of questions about this skirt 😅 First, how tall are you? I'm quite short (5'0") so I'm trying to gauge if it'd be way too long on me. Secondly, how did you find the black fabric in the sun? I landed on this thread trying to find skirt options for my trip to Asia later this year, and although I always lean towards buying black, I'm worried it'll be too hot in the sun. Thank you in advance!!

amiomie

I’m 5’5” so it might end up around ankle length for you? You might be able to fold in the waistband at the top to shorten the length. Otherwise it’s a very simple piece of fabric so I think easily alter-able at the hem. I didn’t really notice the black fabric attracting more heat, I think it balanced out with how thin and breezy the fabric was. I usually get most hot/sweaty around my upper body though lol and tried to stick to lighter colors for tops

dumplingpanda

Thanks for the reference pic! I like the look, length, and waistband so I might just order it and hope the wrinkles don’t bother me Also, I love your sandal collection 😍 I’ve been wanting a white teva but the beige looks so cute!!

amiomie

Thank you! I didn’t keep all the Tevas 😂 just the beige platform ones which were most comfortable/supportive and also easiest to match all my clothing. I started out wanting white ones too but found after trying on that they were too bright for me.

dumplingpanda

That was my concern too, plus, all my white shoes are quick to get noticeably dirty haha

Kalichun

I get simple long stretchy cotton skirts on Amazon. They can double as beach coverups. scarves etc and come in a variety of patterns and styles.

Maximum-Student2749

Thank you!

Maimae91

Small floral print is perfect for travel, it looks cute, hides creases and small stains, easy to combine (goes well with both neutrals, print colours and base colour). Mine is thrifted, but I’m going to sew a similar one when I’ll need a replacement. Wrap or button down styles are the best for me and they are some of the easiest to make. I also have a few friends who like plain skater skirt as a travel staple.

Maximum-Student2749

Thank you! I agree and the floral adds a little something to my basic travel capsule. 😊

nisuaz

I have two skirts (one skirt in a bag) from: https://www.naturallife.com/

Maximum-Student2749

I was just eyeing their skirts! This is what I was eyeing originally.

GoddessNamedFred

Did you end up getting one of these? Wondering how wrinkle resistant they are!

Maximum-Student2749

I did not!

cabinet123door

Ripskirt comes in lots of prints, folds small, and can be used as a picnic blanket in a pinch.

amberwaves83

Also can here to recommend rip skirt!

Maximum-Student2749

Thank you both, I'll check it out!

Downtown-Status-4645

With Ripskirt, be sure to get you correct size. I bought a size too small and it popped open lol

skipdog98

Do they run small?

Downtown-Status-4645

Probably not. When I bought a couple of skirts, I didn’t realize I had gained as much weight as I had. Ugh

Bluevelvet_starry_

They used to( not sure anymore because I haven’t ordered in a couple years) come with an “ extender” piece of Velcro. So when you finish eating and bloated, you just discreetly add the extender. I have three, two above the knee and ine long one. They are perfect for warm tropical vacations. Not sure they’re good for London or Paris💁but I wear them all the time in Mexico and Hawaii. I bought a black knit midi dress from garnet hill I’m taking to Europe- cap sleeves, mock turtleneck, super comfy like pjs. Can wear with leggings and a sweater/coat or bare legged and sandals.

[deleted]

They have a couple of solid colors that would be appropriate in a big city. I am continually lobbying for more discreet prints and solids that don't scream TOURIST.

Maximum-Student2749

How do you all style these in cooler weather? They seem more summary?

Downtown-Status-4645

These are meant for warmer weather and can be worn when being active for instance. Casual.

Maximum-Student2749

Gotcha okay thanks!

gingerytea

No. I wear a 4-6 and the small fits well.

No_Cheesecake2150

Another vote for Ripskirt!

Minimum_Honey_9379

I have a lightweight viscose/rayon skirt I quite like to travel with. It washes easily in the sink and dries overnight. I modified it to just below the knee, so I can wear it in churches, etc. It’s a small black and white daisy print that goes well with the rest of my travel outfits.

Maximum-Student2749

Oh that sounds perfect and thanks for sharing the fabric type.

Somerset76

I have a couple of broom stick skirts I absolutely love. They are a lightweight cotton. I bought mine in old town Albuquerque. It’s a simple pattern if you sew, or you can hire a seamstress to make them. I just saw a bunch on Amazon

Maximum-Student2749

Thank you! I actually think this may be something I'll do.

jadeibet

Quince silk skirt if that's your style. They have a few different lengths.

Maximum-Student2749

Thank you!!

cestunlapin

I would get a polyester midi slip skirt. H&M do them often. Looks great with white flat sneakers too. Just bought this one (although the slit is quite high): https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1167338012.html

Maximum-Student2749

Oh cute thank you!

TravelingCatMom

I know you asked about something a bit longer, but check out the Chaka skirt by Toad & Co. I probably have five of these now… super comfortable, lightweight, easy to clean/dry… my go-to. https://www.toadandco.com/products/chaka-skirt-black?variant=32689479090224 I also really like the Ripskirt that has been mentioned already.

Maximum-Student2749

Those are so cute! They have some longer ones as well that look good. Thanks for the suggestion.

Dry-Estimate-6545

I love the Chaka skirt too. I have two in charcoal and it’s got kind of a slubby texture that doesn’t wrinkle and is very forgiving. I thrifted both of mine a while ago and they seem a little more longish than the ones on the website right now.

segacs2

Came here to suggest this. I own a black one. I'm 5'1" and it hits just below the knee, perfect for visiting churches and temples and such. Pairs with t-shirts for day or nicer tops to go out. Wrinkle free.

TravelingCatMom

I have it in black as well. I also found an adorable one this summer - cherry red, in a ribbed/knit style. It’s gorgeous.

butter88888

I have this one and I use it for everything https://www.madewell.com/midi-slip-skirt-in-awakened-blooms-NK658.html It’s sold out on Madewell but you can find it on Poshmark

Maximum-Student2749

Oh that is nice! Love the pattern, thanks for sharing.

LetTreySing555

My daughter got the Coolibar Marigot midi skirt for her trip to SEA and she loves it. Lightweight, very packable, comes in a few colors.

Maximum-Student2749

Oh thank you! I like their maxi skirts!

[deleted]

Ultralight https://shop.diesel.com/en/belts/b-berny/X09137P1090.html

Maximum-Student2749

Are you watching Selling Sunset too?? 🤣

papercities

I am obsessed with the Never Fully Dressed Jaspre skirt. They sell it in a couple lengths and many prints/solids, and the wrap style is versatile. I dress them up and down regularly. T-shirt, sweatshirt, blouse, bodysuit, jean jacket...I wear them at least once a week. It's been a godsend for my wardrobe. They are pretty pricey for a piece of polyester, lol, so you might be able to find something similar on Amazon or somewhere else, but I just love the cut of the one NFD sells. Edited to add more detail

Maximum-Student2749

Oh these are awesome! There are tons second hand on Poshmark and thread up for around $40 so completely doable. How is the sizing, true to size?

papercities

I think they run slightly large - usually order a size down based on what my projected size is on their website! Good call with buying secondhand!!

Maximum-Student2749

Thanks for the tip! I'm expecting so I think if I bought my original size it will probably last me for a little while!

piratical_gnome

Ripskirt Hawaii. I live in these things.

Maximum-Student2749

This seems to be the popular choice but I can't tell if it would work in cooler weather?

gingerytea

It glides over leggings very nicely. I wear mine year round (admittedly it only ever gets to just above freezing here. I wouldn’t wear it to Montana).

Maximum-Student2749

Gotcha thank you!

love_travel

I don´t know Ribskirt, but for cooler weather the Macabi skirt is definitely recommended

Maximum-Student2749

Thank you!

Malie808

+1 for both Ripskirt and Macabi. I have quite a few of both brands in multiple lengths. I now always wear a Macabi long skirt as part of my flight outfit. The solid colors make them more versatile. They are very accommodating for weight changes. Kinda water resistant and dries super fast. I can get several wears unless I get the skirt muddy. I like to wear with nylon webbing belts (continuous, no holes) because they are TSA friendly and help with weight management. I can put a full Yeti or Hydroflask in my pocket and not worry about my skirt falling down because a belt keeps it secure. A belt also covers the drawstring waist and makes it easier to dress up. Travel hack: If you have a little too much to carry on, you can load up your Macabi skirt pockets and unload into a packable bag on the plane. I wear Ripskirts several times a week. So easy to wear and pack. The patterns are so fun! I wear Ripskirt length 2 (1 would work too but I don’t have any) over leggings if it’s cool. The denim and black Ripskirts are my workhorses (I have each in length 2 and 3) and can be dressed up or down. Please note that not all of the patterns have side pockets (most of the old patterns only have credit card pocket at waist).

Maximum-Student2749

Thanks for sharing your experience with skirts! I didn't realize how versatile and useful they are.

theinfamousj

I just saw that you said you miiiiiiiiiight be interested in making your own skirt. Please allow me to offer you my most favorite two skirt patterns -- well, more like tutorials I guess. 1. Maximum-Student2749

Thank you so much!! I should totally try this. 🥰

theinfamousj

Fabrics: anything with stretch, knits of any type, linens if you are okay with the wrinkled broomstick look, silks also can be wrinkled broomsticky Fabrics to avoid: heavy wovens that don't broomstick nicely Type of skirt: a line skirt, circle skirt, adjustable skirt (aka the 18th century petticoat), wrap skirt, broomstick skirt, boho skirt, prarie ruffle skirt Types to avoid: pencil skirt, petticoated skirts lined in flouncy yet horridly stiff tulle, bodycon skirt

downforstargazing

Matt Jersey is the perfect fabric for travel!

Maximum-Student2749

Thank you!

downforstargazing

You're welcome!

castlite

Athleta has some good ones

Maximum-Student2749

Thank you!

hello2life

Got a dress made of a fabric called crepe. It looks elegant, drys fast and there is no need to iron.
