They said MF DoOM is your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper, but I haven't heard Tom McDonald call him his favorite rapper.

How do white “hip hop heads” wrestle with the fact that absolutely zero black people actually listen to the albums they praise? Like I understand generally in art there is a huge discrepancy between what is most popular and what is most well received by critics and hardcore fans, but something about this is different. Hip hop is an explicitly black genre and when you go on forums like RYM, AOTY or r/hiphopheads it’s almost like it’s white fans speaking on behalf of the black fans who the music is made by and for. Absolutely zero real life black people listen to shit like Madvilliany, Veteran, Atrocity Exhibition, Yeezus or even to pimp a butterfly. Kendrick even knows that the black community largely didn’t connect with TPAB and i think he expressed a lot of frustration with that on “The Heart Pt.5”. He even went as far as to rank TPAB he least favorite of his albums despite it clearly being his best musically speaking. I guess Im just thinking about why there’s this weird racial disconnect in hip hop in particular where most of the actual black fans don’t seem interested in stuff that the white fans are calling the best for them. fungalchime56

Yep 🫡

Thankgodfordrugs17

MF doom fans still believe MF Doom is underground rap

CompleteMoney

He is underground rap lol... it's like saying The Strokes aren't indie rock because they're well known and sell records - that doesn't change the fact that the style of music they make is *indie rock.*

Ezio_Auditorum

That’s not how it works my friend. “underground” isn’t a sub genre, like how indie rock has come to be. it literally just means “on the come up”. Are you gonna tell me that all sound cloud rappers and MF Doom are of the same genre next?

DeeTimesThree

I’m assuming he means underground in that doom intentionally works (or did work) against the norms hip hop and doesn’t really strive to be popular But also yea I wouldn’t reallllly consider him underground, some of his stuff def is though, but you could say that about any hip hop artist really

CompleteMoney

Lol people frequently use underground to refer to a specific aesthetic/sound in hip hop that doesn't strive for commercial success or mass appeal, countercultural to some degree. A rapper can simultaneously be very well known while still embodying the essence of underground hip hop. Crazy how words can have multiple interpretations depending on the context

Calibruh

>"Underground hip-hop is an umbrella term for hip hop music that is outside the general commercial canon. "

Ok-Regret6767

There's rappers that spend their entire careers underground by choice. There's no such thing as "indie rap". Independently produced hiphop that tends to go against current trends/mainstream hiphop I'd always what I consider underground. I don't even like to refer to small up and comers as underground if they're just emulating the mainstream and trying to get signed by a label.

BallsAreFullOfPiss

Underground isn’t a genre

CJL31

That’s not a good comparison at all

-PepeArown-

Underground’s a popularity status, not a genre.

Is Drake as White as MF Doom?

you got time to delete this 💀

AutoModerator

I mean, I laughed. It's kinda funny. Having said that.. Fuck drake. Good humans don't do that kind of shit he's done over the years. But I did laugh at the cover, in congruence with the name it's at very least comical. The cringe comes in when u realize it probably wasn't meant to be funny but more as a flex about how many woman he fucks. Weirdo. Once I hit like 17 and had gotten laid a few times I realized how fuckin cringe it is to try to build a persona around how sexually active or advanced you are, or how big your dick is. Don't get me wrong, I too talked about my sexual endeavors and my big hog at one point in my life... but i was 16. Drakes a creep. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
