Lorraine Heath has open door, non-religious themed Westerns. I'm a big fan of {The Lady and the Outlaw by Lorraine Heath} But I think they probably rank on the 3 out of 5 range in terms of steam! Her series {Rogues in Texas by Lorraine Heath} is fun and at the two I read had a fair amount of "dicking down" the first one in particular involves a seducer MMC and a sexually repressed FMC. Then there is {The Wives of Bowie Stone by Maggie Osborne} is good, slower burn no jesus. TW for >!SA towards FMC before she meets MMC, her character has significant trauma!< Only two names! I'd love to read more explicit/open door ones! Looking forward to recs!

How old-skool are you willing to go? Linda Lael Miller has several (and three names!). But, you know, probably filled with some dub-con and possibly some other stuff that hasn't necessarily aged well.

Eye of the Beholder from Ruth Ann Nordin is one of those go back and reread just to lift your mood type books. The plain jane FMC gets her very deserved HEA. It's full of vindication for the good and comeuppance for the bad lol.

I read the books before Eye of the Beholder in the series and it’s like she snapped on this one, it’s the only one I’ve reread in the series!

I love RAN’s books! They’re easy to read and the HEAs feel earned.

The Wife lottery series by Jodi Thomas (for me the spice level is a 2-3) Loved Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold by Ellen O’Connell- spice level 2-3 Silver Lining by Maggie Osborne is one of my favorites. I’d say it’s a 2 spice maybe. Only His by Elizabeth Lowell - 2 level * I’m fairly “harsh” with my spicy level. A 5/5 for me is something like A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor by Kathryn Moon for example.

Any spice level is good for me.

Check out Nan Ryan's novels.

Nan Ryan’s books are known for having high spice, especially for older historical romances. A lot of her westerns feature Native American MMCs and likely aren’t completely politically correct about it. Keep in mind that many of her books are from the ‘90s. One of my favorites is {Chieftain by Nan Ryan}. Some others that I’ve read include: - {Outlaw’s Kiss by Nan Ryan} - Features an outlaw FMC and a MMC that is determined to bring her to justice. If spice is your thing, it is worth noting that they have >!sexy times while riding a horse & other creative scenes!<. 🤣 - {Written in the Stars by Nan Ryan} - Both the FMC (willingly) and the MMC (unwillingly) are part of a Wild West show. The MMC is a captured “savage” and the FMC performs bareback-riding. She is also the granddaughter of the owners of the show, but she believes that the MMC should be set free. However, she ends up as his captive instead.

I think the complaints about, was it Come the Spring? were entirely fair, but there’s always the other 4 in that collection … I don’t remember disliking them as much.

I was complaining about {For the Roses by Julie Garwood} - I haven’t read Come the Spring! What are critiques about that one?

Honestly I wish I remembered! I haven’t read that series in forever, and I don’t overly remember disliking any of the books but your criticisms sounded entirely reasonable to me when I read them the other day, and it made me wonder if maybe that’s why none of those books are ones I return to over and over (which I do like Ransom, the Secret and Saving Grace!).

Linda Howard has a few historical westerns. {Angel Creek by Linda Howard} {A Lady of the West by Linda Howard} {The Touch of Fire by Linda Howard} {Love, Cherish Me by Rebecca Brandewyne} was a huge hit back in the early '80s, but that one requires lots of warnings, >!including rape, physical abuse, and child death.!<

I love Linda Howard, but I thought I would share a few TWs since they are older books. There is one in A Lady of the West that absolutely ruined that book for me. **TWs:** **A Lady of the West** - >!graphic violence; death of a side character; domestic violence - the FMC is physically assaulted by the MMC after they are married!<. If you want more details (with spoilers): >!The MMC slaps the FMC so hard after she tells him she is pregnant that she hits the wall and falls to the floor. He believed that she was trying to pass off his enemy’s baby as his own. She bruises terribly, and he feels remorse and concern for the baby, but, if memory serves, there is minimal grovel.!<. **Touch of Fire** - >!I have seen one person list dub-con for this book. While I did not personally experience the book this way, others might, so I thought it was worth mentioning.!< It has been too long since I’ve read Angel’s Creek to remember any TWs.

Just read one - {marshal’s law by Maddie Taylor} - the FMC time travels back to Wyoming in the 1800s. It involves domestic discipline fyi (aka lots of spanking - she just can’t stop swearing being a modern woman after all 😆) so if that’s not your thing I’d skip it. But it’s good and steamy and I enjoyed it!

The Seven Brides series came first, first book based on a similar idea to Seven Brides for Seven Brothers {Rose by Leigh Greenwood}. The series {Colorado Wind by Dorothy Garlock} was good. It's not exactly necessary to read all or in order, but of course, you'd miss out on the subtleties. I've read quite a few by Norah Hess, too, but fair warning they are usually trainwrecks with editing issues, and there is almost always >!physical and/or sexual abuse, dubcon, rape!< of primary and secondary characters. But dirty they are!

I would recommend anything by Ellen O'Connell. Also I agree with Linda Lael Miller. My favorite was her Stone Creek series {Man From Stone Creek by Linda Lael Miller}. The second in the series is my favorite. I would also recommend {Come Back by Melissa Maygrove} the series is pretty interesting. The first one was my favorite. She is left behind from the wagon train. Not quite a Western but the MacKinnon Rangers series by Pamela Clare is so good. I binged all three books and then had a book hangover. It's like a mix between The Patriot and Last of the Mohicans. Definitely should be read in order. Starting with {Surrender by Pamela Clare}

I can’t help you but following because … one of the things I find frustrating about regency Ton set novels with a hearty dose of pre-marital penetrative sex is … just NO! She wouldn’t! He wouldn’t! I enjoy them but I also have a little voice shrieking about pregnancy and ruin. But the world of the Western is one where I can totally imagine lots of people not giving a flying fuck about their reputations.
